My most painful tattoo by far was on the inside of my arm where my upper arm and forearm meet (the area opposite your elbow). Ihave sat through an 8 hour session before with know problem on my upper arm and shoulder area but after about 2 hours on the inside of my arm I wanted to call it quits but i endured and I'm very pleased I did. The tattoo was in memory of my recently deceased mother so well worth it but needless to say I dont believe I'll be opting for the same spot on the other arm anytime soon.

As a tattoo shop owner, it depends on the individual, as to what part of the body hurts more while getting a tattoo. The above article is not compeletly true. The Lazy Dragon Tattoo and Piericing Studio.

My favorite tattoo wraps around my calf and ankle, over the top of my foot, down onto the top of my big toe. I would have to say the top of the toe was the most painful spot. Oh yeah, the touch I needed a couple years later, even worse!

The tattoos I have on my toes and left and right ankle hurt much less than the one on my right upper back. Interesting that the article states that areas with mostly just bone and skin would be more painful. They were much better pain-wise than areas that have more flesh and fat.

Even though getting a Tat can be a little painful, many people become addicted to body art. The pain is secondary to the evelasting effect (or is it affect), thrill and pride you develop for the art you wear on your skin.

Thank you for removing the suggestion that "black henna" is a safe alternative to permanent tattooing. "Black henna" is a toxic and ILLEGAL form of temporary body art that often results in a trip to the emergency room. Natural henna (reddish brown in color), when applied properly, is very safe and a wonderful way to see if a permanent tattoo is right for you.

I have a couple tattoos and found that the one on my stomach was very painful....If I would have got that one first, I probably wouldn't have any more.

As a tattoo artist AND a licensed nurse, I can tell you that the more painful tattoos are those that involve tendon areas, or jointed areas of the body as the tendons are closer to the surface of the skin and often have many nerve endings near them. BONES don't hurt as bones don't have nerve endings, and sometimes those 'love handles' can be very unloving when it comes to getting them tattooed! EVERYONE is different and I tell people that if you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to deal with it. I've never had a customer quit in the middle of one in the 18 years I've been tattooing. Also, if your tattoo artist is a brute and feels like he or she has to dig deep to get it to 'stick', you are in for a lot of pain, bleeding, and scarring no matter where you get the tattoo. Research the shop first!!!

I have many tattoos ,and the most painful was on my calf. It was even worse than the chest tattoos. I think long and hard (about a year) between tattoos, and research the tattoo parlor. I have also put mine where they can be easily covered or shown off. Less risk of wanting them removed or having regrets.

I agree with girlsinger2003 - tattoo removal is way more painful than getting one in the first place. If getting a tattoo - at the least painful level - is like getting snapped with a rubber band, than getting it removed was like getting burned with oil. It was awful. But, as far as the article goes, the most painful places I've gotten tattoos my right underarm, my sternum, the inside of my right thigh and the back of my left ankle. All of these places were way worse than the tattoo I got inside my lip (which everyone thinks hurt the worst).

The author says it's painful also to have it removed . . . the removal of a tattoo is much more painful than the tattoo being applied in the first place. Not to mention it's grossly more expensive. Trust me, I'm in the process of having one removed. It's incredibly painful, both physically and fiscally. RogueSketch is right, think long and hard before you get one - make sure it's really what you want.

I can NOT believe you you seriously suggest people get BLACK HENNA!! are you nuts? That stuff is terrible for you! Before you write this drivel, you might want to do some research - black henna and henna are NOT the same thing!

I am sorry, but Newsweek - you have lost SO much credibility in my eyes for this one.
