I totally agree with ink chick... tattoos are going to hurt no matter where you get them... I have 17 tattoos and I am 17 years old... I have a liscence to do tattoos.. I've done alot of them.. and the one the hurt the most on my is on my stomach.. its like right where I wear my jeans an its about 8 inches long. . . I held my breath almost the whole time it hurt that bad... I have one on the top of my foot also.. its mind over matter... if you go into it and your like oh my god this is gunna hurt so bad its going to...mine didn't hurt... I actually just sat there and watched t.v yeah tattoos hurt but who is gunna get there eyelids tattoo'd?? Some people do it but hell yeah thats gunna hurt.. I think that if "Newsweek" is going to do something on tattoos like this they should do it on popular places people get tattoo'd that hurt the most... not eyelids.. I think this article was pretty ridiculous... once again Shame on them for publishing it.

Whoever wrote this article clearly has little or no personal experience with being tattooed, cosmetically or artfully. The bottom line is, the pain associated with tatttoos, like the tattoos themselves, is unique to the individual. Of COURSE genital tattoos are going to hurt; of COURSE having your eyelids tattooed is going to hurt. Anyone with half a brain could guess at that, which makes me think the author didn't do any legitimate research and just stated the obvious. It seems to be written more for shock value than for any kind of real educational purposes. In short, this was one of the lamest articles I have ever read in 'Newsweek". Shame on them for even publishing it.

I have a tattoo on my big toe, one going across my abdomen, one behind my right shoulder, another right above my butt crack, as well as one behind my neck. The one on my shoulder didn't hurt at all but the abdomen one made me want to scream. The toe tat was somewhat painful but bearable as was the one above my butt, however the one behind my neck had my entire body shaking with pain. The bottom line is, pain is personal. What is a personw illing to endure for the sake of art? I do not regret any of my art work despite the pain and once it's done, you don't feel the pain any longer. It's like childbirth. You remember that it hurt pretty bad but it wouldn't stop you from doing it again for most people. I've also had piercings. My ears, nose, tongue, belly and nipples. The tongue didn't hurt at ALL despite the many nerve endings there. Neither did the nose. The belly almost had me jumping off the table and the nipples made me SCREAM, Again.. temporary pain. I've since let many of the piercings close and have decided to only keep the ears and belly rings. It's a personal choice and writing an accurate article is difficult becuase everyone has a different threshold. I did interview people prior to getting my first tat (abdomen). I only spoke to people with similar tats in the same location. I got a pretty acurate description when one girl in a bar told me it was like someone slowly slicing open your belly with a razor blade. After a while though, it sort of grows numb. There is also a difference in the pain of an outline vs. coloring in vs. shading if it's needed etc.. I see none of that included in this article. As I learned when my neck tat was being done, it DOES make a difference.

Who did this polling? Most ppl do NOT get tattoos on their eyeballs! The "mons pubis" is obviously not what is being referred to (mons pubis is the fatty area that lays on top of the pubic bone, this article sounds like it's talking about genitals). I don't think eyebrows, lips, or behind the ear would hurt too bad (I've had my eyebrow pierced twice, and a labret done twice). If the people being polled were tattooed people and excluded the permanent makeup sector, much different results would be seen!

This inside of the wrist is also painful for some. I recently had both wrists done and compared to the tattoo on my shoulder (which was only mildly irritating), they hurt a lot. The amount of pain can also be related to the type of tattoo. My wrists are solid black Kanji symbols with no shading. I have an average threshold for pain and was surprised by the sensitivity of my latest body art.

I have three tattoos -- one on the back of my right shoulder, second on the top of my foot, and third on my lower back. The lower back HURTS more than the other two places. Am thinking of getting another one.

I think tattoos are AWESOME! I have 6 and the one that hurt the most was on my big toe. I was suppose to get it touched up 2 weeks after but I never went back to do it. The others are on both ankles,my chest ;) and the small of my back (trampstamp) that DID NOT hurt at all. ( I actually fell asleep while she did the 1 on my back) . I wouldnt change any of them for anything. I got all 6 of them to represent certain periods of my life and very much looking forward to the 7th. My husband has 3 and is looking forward to his 4th. People do need to realize that tattoos are here to stay , so all the "old fashioned" folks need to get over it =)
My 17 yr old stepdaughter cant wait until shes 18 to get her first and me and my husband will be right there beside her just as we were when we had her belly button pierced at 15 and her nose pierced at 17.

you do that to your own daughter?

          • Posted By: tattooistsbaby @ 02/12/2008 11:33:48 AM

concerning mankinda's comment "what the hell is wrong with him/her?!?" im only 15 and i have a tattoo, my lip done and my ears periced 2. ive gauged my ears and im not stopping until i get to and 8( about a half an inch) letting your daughter do what she ants with her body is fine. shes not 16 getting something permanent so why critisize ppl for letting it happen. mind your own buisness. is not the 1900's anymore and tattoos and pericngs are everywhere get over it.

I have one on my lower ankle and big toe as well as lower back the pain was slight I would do it again I love my tats. I am getting one on my upper back.

  • Posted By: demondarling37 @ 02/12/2008 11:32:17 AM

Well, these are the places I heard would hurt before I even considered getting a tattoo. Actually, I felt almost nothing when I got mine, and it's on the right side of my extreme lower abdomen. (It's hard to describe ha ha) Pain is definitely a personal thing, because when I was choosing the design, I seriously thought I was gonna die of the pain, yet I didn't. Tattoos are art. And to any ladies who want a great place for a tattoo that can be easily hidden if needed--where I got mine is most always covered by pants, but like during the summer, it can be shown in a swim suit. Momma always said: Never get a tattoo where a judge can see it. :)

I have two tattoo's. One on my lower back and one on the foot. My back hurt really bad, where my foot I really couldn't feel it.

Why isn't the lower back on here? I have two, one on my lower back and foot. The back hurt but the one on my foot didn't.

I think this is stupid. It seems fairly obvious that information on tattoos should be gotten from reputable artists at reputable shops. I doubt that the person that wrote this article has any tattoos at all. It makes me crazy how many people watch shows like 'Miami Ink' and think that they are experts. Go to a shop, talk to an artist or go to a tattoo forum like Read Street on www.tattoodles.com if you want information on tattoos. Would you ask your kids Kindergarder teacher about brain surgery?

    • Posted By: tattooistsbaby @ 02/12/2008 11:18:56 AM

not everyone on here doesnt know what they are talking about. my father is a tattoo artist and i know a lot more than what most ppl do. thats why they come here for information on the topic at hand. some people help more than others but no matter what everyone atleast knows someone that has been in the tattooing experience so we can all help

  • Posted By: mankinda @ 02/12/2008 8:55:20 AM

TO ANY WOMEN THINKING ABOUT GETTING A TATOO....THINK BEFORE YOU INK...... BECAUSE IT WILL BRING DISRESPECT FROM MANY PEOPLE TO YOU .... A WOMEN WITH ANY TATOO IS PRETTY BAD....AND NO I AM IN MY 30S NOT OLDER....JUST REMEMBER THERE IS STILL ONLY 2 PERCENT OF WOMEN GETTING ANYKIND OF TATTOO

    • Posted By: tattooistsbaby @ 02/12/2008 11:08:53 AM

      i highly doubt this

JustMyOpinion123: I loved your entries and I completely agree with you. You sound like a decent person with good judgement. I look forward to reading more from you. :-)

    • Posted By: tattooistsbaby @ 02/12/2008 11:06:17 AM

well thanks. my father has been tattooing since he was 16 and hes only 35 but anyway over the summer i usually sit and watch him tattoo on a daily basis and it is true not everyone can handle getting tattooed. the easiest way to do it is to occupy yourself. bring a friend along with you, a magazine o even a book. keeping your mind off of what the tattooist and on something else helps the both of you out. my father has a t.v. and DVD player hooked up so the patcients can bring in movies and things to watch. being occupied relaxes you and thats a good thing.

i think fighting over having a tattoo and what it makes you is stupid personally my honors english teacher has a tattoo and she is a very well educated person in my opinion so yes their are tramps with tattoos but theirs also successful people in every feilod with tattoos i dont think there is a single feild in which someone doesnt have a tattoo be it politics or adult entertainment or ceo of some corporate business so you all needs to stop bickering over what a tattoo makes you

    • Posted By: machaut @ 02/12/2008 11:05:14 AM

Your honors English teacher hasn't had much success in teaching you the rudiments of grammar or composition, though, has she? It seems that her tattoo is the least of her professional problems.

OK, It CONSTANTLY pisses me off to have these sorts of articles written by people that have obviousl never been tattooed. IF you are interested speak with a reputable knowledgable artist at a good shop. This is the LAST place anyone should go for infomation on being tattooed!

My witty replies to some of you got placed way down the list so I didn't any one who might be interested to miss them. So I am reproducing them here for your enjoyment:

    To Shawna:

Your boss at the trucking company or the diner proably does like your tattoo. I was talking about a career woman. But you're 18 years old so you have all the world experience you need to make educated decisions that will affect the rest of your life.

    TO jewel Z:

isn't exercise time in the "yard" over? When you do back in your cell? I bet you can recite the dialogue from every episode of the "L" Word". You seem like a classy lady though...I am sure the business executives and other wealthy and successful men are beating a path to your door.

I, for one, really enjoyed your witty replies. Thanks for sharing!

JustMyOpinion: I enjoyed your entries and got some good laughs, especially the one about Angelina Jolie being a freak...LOL. I agree with you and look forward to more of your entries. :-)

You really shouldn't spread your ignorance anonymously like this...why don't you do something positive and work on being a decent human being. You are extremely superficial and arrogant. I hope that you take time to educate yourself and learn a little about the world. Good fortune.

Your a dumb ass who is probably the most uneducated of them all.

  • Posted By: Janet_Smith @ 02/12/2008 10:23:30 AM

Wow...Try your shins. So glad that didnt get mentioned.Stupid people writing articles and they themselves dont have tattoos. And if you actually know the person tattooing you they will use numbing creams. They dont take 20 mins to work.I did 4 hours on my shins, and after a good hour we used a mild numbing cream...worked within minutes.

Also ontop of your foot will fade A LOT faster than most places. It does hurt but it will fade faster due to wear and tear.

    • Posted By: rachelrocks84 @ 02/12/2008 10:54:52 AM

Shins? Wow. I would imagine that that would hurt a lot, with it being so close to the bone. Props to you for going through that!

  • Posted By: tattooistsbaby @ 02/12/2008 10:54:04 AM

my father is a tattoo artist and he avoids the numbing cream...he wnt use it at all...he says that it wears off and usually the patcient urges him to stop. stopping a tattoo for breaks for a long period of time( i.e. a half an hour) makes it even more painful starting back up agian because the skin tends to be raw. instead my father sits them down and tells them " i am first going to draw a line with just the needle, without the ink so that you can feel how it is". this prepares the patcient and prevents the "jumping" that can happen when the artist firsts begins.
