Who would have thought a discussion on tattoos would get all these people riled up! Some of these comments are just ridiculous! I think my tattoo parlor of choice put it best when they said, "THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PEOPLE WITH TATTOOS AND THOSE WITHOUT IS THAT THE PEOPLE WITH TATTOOS DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE TATTOOED OR NOT." Get over it people.

We have one at our shop that says "the only difference between tattooed people and people without tattoos is that tattooed people can kick your ass!"

That's awesome! I think I like that one more than the one I posted!

    Curin and Shawna:

I have to go now but I will leave you with these words. Ladies, come talk to me in twenty-five years. I am sure you will be singing a different tune then. Good luck in college, girls!

I have three tattoos, they all hurt, but not enough to keep me from going back. It seems like the issue of pain is not as important as the issue of ignorance. I was raised to be proud of myself for what I am, and to not let what other people say or think get me down. That being said, my tattoos make me even more proud, that I can do something for myself and not feel the need to rationalize it to others. If you want a tattoo, go get one, if you don't like tattoos, don't get one. It's just that simple. I will say, though, I think the tramp-stamp (lower back tattoo) is the tackiest thing a woman can do to her body. It's the entire generation of twenty-something co-eds with slutty tattoos that make these hateful internet discussions possible. A word of advice to you girls trying to prove you're grown up and independent, be grown-up and independent, don't get the same tattoo in the same place as the rest of your friends. Be original, you just might enjoy it.

    Kned:

Why didn't you say you were 25? You have much more life expreience than that teeny-bopper Shawna.
Let me tell all of you who are bad-mouthing me something. I understand it is a free country and you can get as many tatoos you like wherever you like. I don't dislike people with tatoos. My wife has one on her rear end. A little yellow Tweety bird. She got it, like many women (and men I suppose) on a whim. But you don't see too many successful people, outside of the entertainment world, who have them. There is a reason for that. People with tatoos are no worse than people without. The perception is though, that tatoos are low class, especially on women. And perception is reality. I don't make up the rules but I can see how the game is played. You can be proud of your tatoos but just beware that you will always be fighting an uphill battle because of the perception in the general population of people with tatoos.

No obviously you don't. Im sure there are just as many CEO's with tattoos as there are not. And I am also sure that there are just as many companies that will not descriminate against a person with tattoos as those that do. The fact of the matter is every year more and more teens and people in there twenties are getting body modification. Soon, the current CEO's and company leaders will retire thus bumping up the twenty-something, which could quite possibly have some kind of body modification. The rules of the business are changing. Just a few years ago it was nearly impossible to find a company that would let someone have peircings in. You now see many companies making some exceptions such as with nose peircings. Get over it.

      Juiceman:
I have met sixteen year olds with more sence than adults in their thirties. Just because you are eighteen that does not mean you are any less experienced than someone ten years older than you. I agree that in some cases the tattoo placement can make it more difficult to get a good paying job, but that does not limit you to the entertainment industry. You feel you can tear someone down for being eighteen and having a tattoo, like shawna; but didn't she say she is making sixteen dollars an hour, going to be going back to school and taking care of herself? Sounds like she is mature and has her priorities in order; there are plenty of people far older than her who are not doing that well, and some of them do not have tattoos.

I have 3 tattoos, all of which I really love. I don't care whether or not other people like them, I didn't get them for other people. I don't even care that my husband does not have any, when I wanted my first he was more than willing to drive me to get it. And, also drove me a month later to get my second. I waited several more years before getting my third and it's my favorite - a tribute to my disabled son. However, I don't agree with the article on places with more flesh hurts less. My first is on my ankle and it didn't hurt at all. My second was done on my size D breast and that one hurt when they got close to the nipple. I think which part hurts worse all depends on which part on your body is more sensitive. My ankle had been cut many times while shaving so I think that part was just numb all the time anyway, where my breast is much more sensitve and that's why it hurt more. My last one is on the back of my shoulder (also less fleshy than my breast) and that one also did not hurt.

  • Posted By: kingscomp777 @ 02/08/2008 3:24:34 PM

Im going to have to disagree with this article. Tattoos do not all feel the same to all people like explained but when I got my tattoo on my back it hurt less when he was doing it on my spine on when he got to the more fatty areas was when it hurt more. Now im pretty skinny Im 5'6 and weight 117 pounds so i dont have a whole lot of fat on my body but were there was less fat it hurt less and were there was more fat it hurt more.

    • Posted By: jenmarie208 @ 02/08/2008 4:51:47 PM

I totally agree. I got my first tattoo on my ankle when I was 18. It really didn't hurt...it just got annoying after a while. I got my second tattoo 2 years ago. This one was on my lower back. The only part that hurt was in the fattier areas by my waist. For me, that was worse than childbirth (I've gone through that 5 times with no drugs). I think of getting tats the same as having kids. You go through different stages deciding to get one, deciding what you want and where you want it. Who's going to do it, making sure that the artist is a right fit for you like you would looking for a doctor. You experience different emitions: excitement, nervousness, fear (am I going to like it, is it going to look the way I pictured it, is the pain going to be so bad that I won't be able to go through with it). The "big day" approaches, you decide what you're going to wear, taking into consideration that you're probably going to be in a little discomfort when you leave with your new "pride and joy." You and the ones you've chosen to be with you load up in the car and make the (sometimes) long awaited journey. You get there and fill out paperwork. You are taken to your room where the "staff" explains exactly what is going to happen...more than happy to answer any questions you have. The gloves are put on and before you know it, you are looking at what was once just a gleam in your eye. Any worries you had are gone, the pain was worth it. You will go home and nurture it (ie after care, protect it from the sun, etc.). Time will go by...you will have times when you look at your tattoos and silently smile at it, thinking back on that special day. It will forever be a part of you. Tattoos are like kids in the fact that they aren't all perfect either. Minor ones can be taken to the "doctor" to be "treated." Sometimes people just can't live with a tattoo anymore, and have to remove themselves from it. The memory of the tattoo will always be there.

This is a personal comparison for me. I realize not everyone has the same feelings, but as you can see, getting a tattoo isn't always about getting crazy with the girls or being "men" with the boys. I know doctors and lawyers and nurses and very successful business owners with tattoos. Not everyone uses their monthly government check or their babies child support to get "inked."

For those of you who are bad mouthing people with tattoos, stating they have low self-esteem, are trashy, and so on, what do you have to say about all the celebrities out there with this body art? I suppose they are just as pathetic in your mind as the rest of us. I am a secretary of a very large Catholic church and have 6 tattoos (none are small in nature either); 5 of which are visible. Taboo? NOT! Never have I received a negative comment. Most people are curious or fascinated and admire the artwork. I spent years selecting the artwork and yes, they tell a story. My artwork actually inspired my father, who is in his 50's, to get his first one. How cool is that! There is absolutely no need to trash good, decent people who love art and choose to display it on their body. If you don't have something intelligent to say about an experience you apparently have never had, then please do the rest of us a favor and go back into your cave and live miserably ever after.

yes it is shallow to have tatoos, grow up. be upsatnding citizens quit acting like a bunch of hippies!! get over yourself. there is a reason most places of buisness require you to keep them covered. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THEM!!!! it's hilarious how u used celebrities to defend having tatoos, hello they are shallow!!!! look at brittany spears!! and lets not forget jamie lynn. come on talk about needing help!! and futhermore, u work in a church right?? what do u think about these verses in the Bible Romans 12:1 that ye present your bodies a living sacrifrce, HOLY, accepable unto God which is yoru reasonable service. or 1Corinthians 6:19 what? know ye not the your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you which ye have of God and ye are not your own? for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are Gods. i really don't think you should bring up working in a catholic church when you're discussing something that is obviously against God. maybe you should pray about that.

        A) upstanding citizen's don't have tattoos? Pulleeassseee.... I have many, I vote, I pay taxes, I make quite a bit of money for someone at my age, I am buying my first home, I own my car outright (paid for it by myself since I bought it brand new), I have a dog and a I'm a tattoo artist.

Secondly, all your Bible *** means nothing to me. You can't throw scripture at someone to try and make them feel bad about themselves when they have enough sense to realize that fairy tales are ok for 10 year olds but the bible is nothing but a good piece of fiction! By the way, doesn't it also say in there somewhere "judge not lest ye be judged"????? Hypocrite!

      • Posted By: Abrannam @ 02/08/2008 3:44:29 PM

Grow up and be upstanding???? I have many tattoos, hold a high paying position with Carrier Corp and life in a $400,000 house in a development, drive new cars, send my child to private school. Having a tattoo has absolutely nothing to do with being responsible. Its Narrow minded bigots like you that need to grow up,

Well holly crap wiz aren't you a genious! anyways contrary to what the Wiz says... we Morticians are mor interested in giving the Deceased a respectable last professional service ,but sorry Wiz the last service that is provided to the deceased is not the service of judging the deceased persons Tatoos... I have some tatoos myself, and the bottom line really is Tatoos are a matter of personal choice..... and each of my Tatoos have there very own personal , memory that I will get to keep with me... YES WIZ till the that I die! but people please don't think like the wiz... that we Morticians are going to be judging your Tatoos because frankly.... We Don't... we get into thtis line of work to be able to give you and your loved ones a gracious and respectable way for your loved ones to see you for the last time... God willing you'll see them in your Dreams..... maybe even get a tatoo in order to memorialize them for the rest of your life as well.... take care folks....

Really, People against body modification and can degrade people for it make me SICK. Seriously, I am 18 years old, I had the chance to get my first tattoo when I was 16 but wanted to wait to make up my mind on the perfect one and not just get something that is mainstream. I picked angel wings that take up the whole top of my back in Loving Memory of my Grandpa and My Uncle who botch passed away. My boss has seen my tattoo and he LIKES IT. Body modification doesn't mean you will necessarly be unemployed, homeless, trashy, and any of the other God aweful things that some of you close minded people associate with tattoos.

If you don't like them thats fine, you have the right to your opinion but to be so judgmental about people you DONT EVEN KNOW because they have chosen to express themselves in a different way than you might makes you look like a rude, disrespectful, closeminded idiot.

Oh and to the dumb asses that are saying "If God wanted blue and green people he would make them like that" thats like saying if God wanted people to wear clothing he would make up be born in them. If God is going to judge me because he gave me free will and I chose to show my love for my family through body modification than I don't want anything to do with that kind of God. I am a devout christian so STFU if you can't even see from someone elses point of view. Dummies.

      Shawna:

Your boss at the trucking company or the diner proably does like your tattoo. I was talking about a career woman. But you're 18 years old so you have all the world experience you need to make educated decisions that will affect the rest of your life.

      • Posted By: JustMyOpinion123 @ 02/08/2008 4:45:06 PM

"I am a devout Christian so STFU .... " I bet God likes you talking like that.

Thank you for degrading me you ass hole but I am actually a Design Assistant in the Reno Area. I make $16 an hour as a starting teenager. I pay my own bills, car, rent, and everything else. I am attending UNR in the fall for Bussiness Finance and Administration. Go f yourself. You know nothing about me.

  • Posted By: Curin @ 02/08/2008 4:44:02 PM

Wow... so many narrowminded people. I have a tat on my left shoulder blade; I'm not a slut, stupid or any other negative thing people have been described as being for having one. I'm twenty, attending collage, engaged and completely self-reliant. Most of my friends have tats and none of them are any worse than I am. For those of you who are using God as the basis for your arguement against having tats, doesn't it state in the bible '"thou shalt not judge lest ye be judged"? Why not leave the decision on wether or not someone will go to hell because of body modifications up to God like you are supposed to? It is people like you who pass judgement on others based on how they look, etc., that make this world a worse place. For all of you who are saying those with a tat will go to hell, I'll see you there.

As for the rest of you who see someone with a tat and automatically think they are a horrible person; grow up. The placement of a tat does not mark you as something. In some cases, yes, a tats location will hinder your ability to get a good job; however, most of the time employers do not care as long as they can be covered up while you are at the workplace. Most men like women with tats, some don't and that is fine; then don't have to be with those of us that have them. Seriously, get over yourselves. Let people make their own decisions about modifying their body, or not. No one is forcing you to get a tat or to be with someone who has one.

For those of you who have one already, awesome! If you want one, I encourage you to think it out and make sure it is something you will not regret getting later. Tats that have some kind of meaning to you are the best ones to get. I know I'll be getting at least two more done on my back.

  • Posted By: dirtyoldbiker @ 02/08/2008 4:43:35 PM

I'm a 50 yr old professional, both arms are sleeved from the top of my hands to my shoulders and chest. I have retired from the Navy and recieved most of my work from the different places around the world. Each I remember where and who I was with when I got them. I am not done yet (I still have a back to fill). I've cleared over 100K a year since i've retired. Tattoos do not make you evil granted I do not work around the general publuic where I'd be judged by narrow minded people.
But wasnt the article about the most painful places to get a tattoo ? I found it was the elbow for me, next would be under the arm pits and then the chest stung a bit.
Tattoos are not for everyone but most of us with tattoos don't hold it against people without them.

My henna tattoo lasted about a month and as soon as it wore off I decided to get a real tattoo but I didn't rush into it, it took me two years to be certain of want I wanted.

Actually, henna can last for months (mine lasted only for two weeks) and doesn't leave a mark. So no worries.

I have had 4 tattoos all on my ankles. I had all 4 removed about 5 years ago and 2 years ago I got another one on my ankle. I have to say that it hurt more coming off then it did going on. It was painful at first but after a bit your ankle goes numb and you can't feel it anyway. I think the ankle is the sexiest place a women can have a tattoo.

    • Posted By: elithian @ 02/08/2008 4:29:26 PM

I am just one man but I do not think there is a sexy place for a tattoo

      • Posted By: ceparrott3 @ 02/08/2008 4:32:49 PM

Are you sure you aren't two men...or even 1.3 women? Sure there are sexy tatoos. I always thought that angel wings on a chick are super sexy!!!

Perhaps a course on the English language would help. Maybe you would be able to read with understanding.

Everyone told me the top of the foot would be a very painful place to get my tattoo. Parlors even turned me away because I didn't have any in other places. This would be my first one. To my surprise everyone couldn't have been more wrong. While it didn't feel good, It didn't hurt quite as bad as they told me it would. I was shocked but happy that there wasn't as much pain as I expected. If you don't have a tattoo yet but would like one. Remember this- they are contagious!

    • Posted By: baylee333 @ 02/08/2008 4:38:54 PM

I totally agree. Ever since I got my first one on my hip 5 years ago I've been wanting another one. I always said the next one would be on my foot but I've been putting it off because I was worried about the pain. Maybe now I'll finally go in and have it done.

  • Posted By: Cyanotica66 @ 02/08/2008 4:38:34 PM

When I was in the military, I hung out with a lot of guys who were chomping at the bit to get tattoos. It was a right of passage, I guess, and I went with a few of them to the tattooist to see what was being offered. The books and walls were full of your standard fare, nothing original, most of it trashy as hell! I had decided to get a tat, but as a fairly intelligent woman, I realized that the subject and location were important considerations. First, I started to put my skill as an artist to work by designing tattoos for my friends and after seeing the successes they had with my original work, I designed my own tattoo and had it done by a reputable tattoist. Yes, it is hidden, I chose not to have it where everybody could see it, but I am still proud of it and have never regretted getting it, not for a single moment. So many young women (and men) get tattoos on areas of their bodies where anyone can see them, and that's fine, as long as they are resigned to being judged by their tattoos. Humans judge, that's what we do. Is it right to assume that a person is trashy because they have a tattoo of a pot leaf on their neck? No, but it happens all the time. Will having a tattoo on your hands, neck, face, or other visible area of your body keep you from getting the job of your dreams? I guess it depends on the tattoo and the dream and the person who's sitting on the other side of the desk interviewing you. I got called out as being a wimp for not getting a more visible tattoo, but I never got rejected for a job because of it, either. And as for the diatribe that masks as commentary by quite a few of you, get a grip on yourselves. Not everybody is going to agree with each other on this subject, but name-calling just childish. Remember, the people on this site can't stop you from getting tattoos, whatever and wherever you want, can they?

  • Posted By: Juiceman0909 @ 02/08/2008 3:28:02 PM

There is noting more unappealign than a woman with a tatoo, especially on her chest. I don't know when this whole trend started. It is another attempt by women to show men how much like men they can be like men.. Men don't want women to be men...they want them to be women. Here is a quick tip to women. No man would rather watch a game with you, play video games, go out for beers, a ball game, etc. They wold rather go with their regular friends. And no man takes any woman seriously who thinks they are a wild and crazy party animal. Oh sure, the man might want to have a one-nighter with them but for a serious relationship, no way. This tatoo trend will end and there will be alot of women going to the "un-tattoer" to have these things removed. I take back my original statement. A tatoo on a woman with wrinklined skin is even more unattractive. And yes, girls, believe it or not, you will age. And you all can compare your wrinklled tattos at the over 40 singles dances you all will be attending.

Hey Juiceman, ever been married, or in a serious relationship? I mean with a woman, not man of your drinking buddies. It's men like you-degrading and disgusting-who make strong women all over the world proud, tattoos or not. As for men preferring to be with men, I disagree. But with a name like Juiceman, maybe you do prefer the company of a clean-skinned male. Hey girls, go out and get yourself a big tattoo, maybe it'll keep this man-juice drinking pervert from ever approaching you.

Wait until you grow up, kid. You'll be singing a different tune. You clearly aren't into women if you'd rather hang out with your boy-friends than a woman. Either that or you were raised by someone who has the mentality that men are higher life forms than women and you are just a lost cause.

    • Posted By: RN12 @ 02/08/2008 3:33:46 PM

juiceman, number one, you can't spell, and number two, you should amend your name to juiceBOY, cause thats where you head is at. If you want to be a teenager looking at GIRLS just for one thing, well fine, but when you decide to GROW UP, and earn your man card, come see meand my gal pals a 40 something, tattooed, non-wrinkled, very fit crowd. But, wait, we don't DO boys. We picked our husbands because they weren't threatned by our love of sports, drinking, and generally having a good time. And as for me, I have NO need to be a man, I like myself just fine!

  • Posted By: ren6496 @ 02/08/2008 4:38:12 PM

I am a 43 year old mother of one son. My first was in my mid twenties. I have no regrets. Sure they are painful, but I would do each and every one of them again I had to. Just got taxes back, and my husband and I are headed to get some more art work. This one will be in memory of my father. He died 2-14-2006.
I want add, I have eleven tatoos, beautiful colors and some without the brightness, and they are all quite nice, nothing trashy about them. It is total choice, getting inked is my choice.
