SWEET, when guys visit the RLD, it's for entertainment for a mission to seek social justice. Nobody is on your wavelength of "What if it was your sister or your mother?" or "What about the oppression?". That's none of our business. The RLD is promoted as an attraction, so people will go check it out. If it is dirty and smelly and the babes are withered dogs, then people won't return.

DSPOT; YOUR THINKING IS ILLOGICAL, YOUR COMPARISON IS ABSURD. DO YOU EVER VIEW THINGS WITH AN OUNCE OF HUMANITY????

Greenie, You should move to Nevada, it's legal there with the exception on Las Vegas. One thing that I haven't read much of is the Human trafficing aspect. Do you realize that most of those women there are there against their will. The were given promises of a good life and good jobs and force into prostitution. How many of you who are supporting the red light district would support your daughter who said to you that they want to be a prostitute. " Mom, Dad, I want to save money for college. I have deciede between two things. 1) I can go to amsterdam and be a hooker or 2) I can get a job as a cahier at the supermarket. I'm thinking I could save up the money faster as a hooker. What do you guys think? How many of you would really say. Hey yeah go to Holland That's sound like a great idea. See the world, save up money, Meet some really nice guys. Pick up a nice STD. Come on.

honestly think that shutting down the RLD will not only cost Amsterdam thousands of tourism dollars but I think that it will have a reverse effect from what they are expecting. They are citing crime as a reason to shut it down but I think that the crime rate will skyrocket when all of these people are forced onto the street. Half of the women there have grown up in those windows and do not know anything else. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to bat for prostitution, but as a 23 year-old from the U.S., ask me what I know about Amsterdam and I will say their famous RLD. Take that away and it loses its appeal. Would they ever try to take the strip clubs or casinos away from Las Vegas???

It's a very sad day. The Netherlands has a long history of tolerance and acceptance. It sounds as if they have their own Bush in office who wants to control the people and have them bend to his bidding. Hopefully the people in The Netherlands will recognize this sooner than we did. What's next. The Netherlands should also realize this is a slippery slope that they are on and people like this guy similar to Bush will not stop and just continue to trample on the rights of the people. Doesn't anyone understand anymore that the majority is not always correct and the majority should not always rule. If that were the case, we would still have slaves working in cotton fields. Think about it next time you vote to limit peoples rights... your vote against them can be a vote for discrimination veiled in the idea of "what's best

I've been reading a lot of the comments and I find it pretty amazing how easy it is to mislead those who stand on high moral ground. I've seen a bunch of comments thanking the mayor of amsterdam for this and talking about human trafficking. Instead of thanking and commending the mayor maybe you need to read between the lines. Maybe you need to read the whole article. Nowhere in the article is there anything about making prostitution illegal. As a matter of fact there are plans to certify "pimps" to handle the prostitutes. It doesn't sound to me like this is a measure to stop human trafficking. It upsets me to see people so eager to follow a governments plans that they don't question the motives behind them. The human trafficking arguement goes nowhere since prostitution would still be legal. This is a money making scheme and you people claiming a moral victory are just victims of the o-kee-doke.

how odd that after 500 years to close down the red light district while the rest of the world gets more promiscuous...but I agree, a town finally doing something right...wish TV would get the idea and clean up its act but NOOO, it is far better to control those who own horses and other livestock and make them file reports every where they go...think I'm crazy?... check out nonais dot org for the latest govt tracking program that will put more surveillance on livestock owners than on illegals, terrorists or sexual deviants.!

This type of "business" brings the wrong types of people into a neighborhood. All you who support a red light district, would you want to raise your kids next to a toxic waste dump? No? Of course not. Then why allow a neighborhood full of drugs and disease filled hookers. Send them all back to where they came from, arrest the pimps, and clean the place up. I went through Amsterdam and I thought the city was gross and filled with creepy people who were shooting up heroin in public. Every man assumes every woman he sees is open for business, you can't just walk down the street, even if you're dressed normal. They still try to transact business with you and if you're not a hooker they're surprised and confused. It's a dump!

what a horrible idea! i understand the cities concern with criminal activity. but do they not realize that all across the world that is the appeal of amsterdam, and thats why there the vast majority of their tourists visit? cleaning up the city to reduce crime is one thing, bring in more police, stiffen regulations and penelties for when they are broken, do whatever you have to do. but removing the cultural appeal of the city, financially is going to send it into a downward spiral. does anyone really think people are going to travel to amsterdam to go see their clothing stores??
