Amsterdam is one of the few places in this world where human beings can go to get away from the strict and mostly rediculous laws that we have here in the States. Now there going to rid themselves of the oldest profession in the world? What sense does that make? Its the tourists spending which allows the city to operate and have the economic growth that it has. Take away one of the main aspects of their economy and there will be no economy. I dont go to amasterdam to shop in the boutiques I go to enjoy the freedoms there that we lack here in the US. To the officials who are interested in devistating a tradition, my question is do you really think you can become another New York? Your inviting organized crime much more if you go through with this attack on your culture. And if so, do you really think your equipt to handle all the responibilities that come with being a global economic capital? Dont try to be something your not! Leave Amersterdam alone......

ALSO TESTING IS ONLY SOMEWHAT HELPFUL, AS WITH CONTINUOUS HIGH RISK BEHAVIOR, TESTING CAN NEVER BE AN ACCURATE INDICATION OF WHETHER THE PROSTITUTE HAS HIV OR OTHER STDS, THERE ARE STILL WEEKS OF INCUBATION WHERE IT WILL NOT SHOW IN THE TEST YET IS COMPLETELY TRANSMITTABLE. SO I STILL THINK YOU HAVE TO BE A MORON TO BE INVOVLED IN PROSTITUTION REGARDLESS OF THE LOCATION.

I thing we should have open prostitution in every city!
Drug use too- controlled of course. We need that revenue!
    Money cures everything, right?
That would also put those narrow moralizers in their place so that all rational, sane people could live their lives as they see fit.
Prostitution/ drug abuse/ human trafficking are just "normal, naturel and unavoidable, right?
What is this world coming to?
What hypocrites these city government people are!
I'm sure they have done things just as wrong in their lives!
I can't believe some people actually want the freedom to live their lives as they see fit without facing the fact that they should be exposed to these natural human behaviours.
    Grow up people of Amsterdam!

I believe those "city goverment people" have the best intent, however you seem to be saying that because they are fallible human beings they are deluded. Noone has alluded to that anyone's sanity or morality is in question. Obviously you may not recall what the sex industry and swiss couple in Amsterdam did to children openly for many years. This is not some ttempt to thwart people's behaviour or make them conform to the standards you assume the people who are spearheading the project have. Making a community a safer, better place for it's inhabitants and visitors is a good thing. The fact is you probaly know very little about the crimes perpetuated against girls dragged into the sex industry or the children in Belgium who died because of it. The word natural is not spelled with an e, perhaps instead od assuming the goverment's motivation to be to stifle freedom, you might try reading.

We should institute laws here also that allow this type of freedom here. We are turning back to the days of witch burning. We need to take charge of our own country and stop government from taking away our rights and judging. Freedom is becoming extinct. We need another Boston tea party. Unfortunately these days, if you don't agree with the puritans and government you're now considered an outcast or a terrorist. I'm guessing this is the new buss word for anyone that has a different opinion.

I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE THE FACT THAT THE RLD IS A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT FOR ANY FEMALE WHO ENTERS, ANYONE WITH AN OUNCE OF INTELLIGENCE AND DIGNITY CAN/WILL PERCEIVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: SWEET._. @ 02/09/2008 10:10:23 AM

SERIOUSLY HAVE ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY BEEN TO THE RLD???I WAS THERE ONCE AND AS A YOUNG ATTRACTIVE EDUCATED FEMALE FROM THE US I FOUND IT TO BE ENTIRELY UGLY, SAD, AND ENTIRELY DEPRESSING. THE ONLY THING MORE DISTURBING THAN THE USED UP OPPRESSED WOMEN IN THE WINDOWS, NONE OF WHICH I FOUND EVEN REMOTELY ATTRACTIVE ALTHOUGH NOT MY MAIN POINT, WAS THE CREEPY GROSS GUYS HANGING AROUND. I FELT UNSAFE AND THE SENSE OF FEMALE OPPRESSION WAS IMMENSE, MEN WHO WORKED THERE WERE ANGRY WHEN I WOULD NOT ENTER PLACES, THEY WERE USED TO CONTROLLING AND OPRESSING WOMEN, VERY SCARY AND UPSETTING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. THE SEX SHOWS WERE GROSS TOO, REAL LOW LIFE, UNLESS OF COURSE YOUR OF THE JERRY SPRINGER CONTESTANT MENTALITLY.

What happen to thee who be without sin, through the first stone. I know it's worded differently. There are many Christians and judging is a sin also. If this is offensive to your religion why are you reading this article. Jesus had befriended Mary Magdalen and she has a very close follower. He forgives not judges. What happened to treat others as you want to be treated.

Correction. The Unites States does have violent crimes, prostitution and lots of drug problems.; we just keep things well hidden. The beauty of Amsterdam was the fact that the city confronted sexuality and embraced it which was great in comparison to the sophmoric views and attitude of many Americans.

I think getting rid of it would be a huge improvement for the city. This area is not what it once was and should be done away with. I agree with the plan. The plan is good and will succeed. Let the RLD move somewhere else.

    • Posted By: C100x @ 02/09/2008 9:33:28 AM

      There isn't a 'somewhere else'.
The Netherlands is a very small country (it fits almost 4 times in the state New York), and Amsterdam is the perfect place for the RLD.
Rotterdam is too big, with too many companies and too little tourists.
The Hague has the government, and the RLD there would be embarrassing.
Gouda already has got cheese and candles, and Utrecht... just isn't the right place.
      Oh, it's got the Jaarbeurs.

everyone knows that once they close the red light district there will be no more drugs or prostitution. Look how the United States, has no violent crime, prostitution or drug problems...

    • Posted By: C100x @ 02/09/2008 9:29:25 AM

      Do you really believe that?

  • Posted By: greenfroggietoad @ 02/09/2008 9:25:52 AM

I understand the cause for concern but what happens when these business close and go underground. They will still exist and will not be regulated. Would crime go down or would there be more instances of rape and disease. Then "Employers" could really control their prostitutes and could enslave them, instead of their "employees" being able to choose for themselves if this is what they want to do. Will they then still be tested on a regular bases? As they say this is the oldest profession in the book. Sex sells. Even in our every day lives, most of the time subliminally through advertisements and seemingly innocent shows we watch. Have you really paid attention to some cartoons and movies our children watch? They are violent and many innuendos that go over their heads but we catch the drift. Live and let live, as long as they are regulated and it doesn't interfere with your life, what difference does it really make. Thanks for letting me express myself.
