    Another typical right wing bigot trying to enforce his narrow views on people and the world and striving for a country of complete "conformity" ..... hmm .... isn't this the same platform unsed by the likes of Hitler and Mussolini? Beware the people of Amsterdam.

    The red light district is not the problem, its the drug addicts, pimps , thieves and organised crime that nneds to be eraidicated. The police and government officials as usual do not want to do the hard work by taking care of the real problems so they want to just tear down the whole RLD,, Absolutely criminal.

    Thank goodness. It is about time. Places like the Red Light District have been havens for much harder drugs than were legally allowed there, and it is highly implausible that the government overestimated the problem of sex trafficking. Usually governments vastly UNDERestimate it, and yes it is a huge problem is Germany, the Netherlands, and any other places with legal or permissive prostitution. Now some slaves can go free! Being Pro-Red Light District has the effect of being pro-slavery and pro-rape for profit (even if unintentional).

    All good things must end
    Sex and drugs and rock and roll
    Farewell Amsterdam.

    The sex drive is extremely powerful. So powerful it has the potential
    to do incredible damage. I think we are seeing so much more of that now.
    Human trafficing for sex is prevalent and increasing. Everyday in the news its
    somewhere, trucks of kidnapped kids in Africa and on and on. This has got to be
    recognized as the worst of human misery and while I'm not sure I understand
    all of Amsterdan's program I'm glad and supportive that they have recognized a huge
    problem and are trying to address it.

    I saw a documentary on 1800's LEGAL prostitution in the USA, on The History Channel. Much like Nevada today:

    * Very little violence was associated with the business;
    * The workers were checked for VD and complied with laws requiring them not to spread disease;
    * Taxes were collected, instead of all the money feeding the Al Capones of the world so they can buy more GUNS, etc.

    Americans traded that in for today's gun-toting pimps who abuse women MORE THAN THEY EVER COULD if most taxes collected on prostitution simply went to enforcement, the same way that alcohol is legal today and taxes on it fund the BATF to keep moonshiners from producing bad-quality liquor that can blind those who drink it. Keeping prostitution above-ground and well-regulated -- just like alcohol is well-regulated today, as opposed to when Al Capone ran the business -- to protect the sex workers and their customers would be the hallmark of a government interested in PROTECTING all its people instead of political leaders who are forcing their religious morals on The People.

    Prohibition created Al Capone, but with liquor legal today, the Al Capones were deprive of that as a revenue source to fund their SERIOUS (violent) crimes. Similarly, banning prostitution will put sex workers on the streets into the hands of violent pimps, instead of Amsterdam's non-violent businessmen.

    THOSE WHO REFUSE TO LEARN FROM HISTORY ARE COMDEMNED TO REPEAT IT.

    OK lets get rid of things that make us unhappy, like ex-wives, taxes, corrupt congressmen/wemon, & having to work for a lifing.

    the deputy mayor reason for closing the rdl doesn't make sense. he said that the rdl is a culprit for crime and human trafficking in the city, but, he is willing to give the "pimps" a license, which will, in turn, contribute even more to the "supposedly" existing problem. what i smell here are fat rats trying to get rich quick and leaving the people who kept the district going out in the cold.

    Well as a native new yorker and a minority Rudy Gulliani turned NYC into a economic enclave for the rich manhattan has become so commericialized until poor people are being forced out of the city at high rates times square is like going to disney land only the rich can afford the entry to such high proced stores hotels and boutiques where the poor who made the area what it was are forced out due to high emerging rents and gentrification of the area. The Greenwhich village area where gays an lesbians frequent is so gentrified now all you see are white woman and baby carriages passing by the bars and sex shops becuase the gay men are forced out of the area by soaring high rental prices. Hers a slap in the face for the gay community New York CITY was denied a permit to have the gay festival after the parade last year why?????????????? because of the new uppies that moved to the area and stated we dont want the noise in our neighboorhood nor the traffic and congestion of the gay people!!!!!!!!!! so Amsterdam look out soon your city will become like NYC an it will be for the rcih and all of its historical traits will be taken away by Upscale land lords and thier boring conservatism.

    Here we go again. The goody two shoes will attempt to end prositution by shutting down the RLD. This has happened in many countries and cities in the US and elsewhere over the last 60 years. They think they have crime now? Wait. Once the girls are forced onto the streets, the pimps will pick hem up. They will control them with booze and drugs, as a result of which crime against the girls and the Johns will jump dramatically as the pimps will beat up and kill girls who do not produce enough revenue. This has happened everywhere this nonsense has been tried. Oh, and did I mention a sharp rise in illegal drug activity and police corruption? Why do the socialists of this world think that they can somehow end prostiuion? Close the houses and prostitution will just magically go away. It has not happened anywhere else this has been tried and it will not happen in Amsterdam.

    If the mayor of that city relies on the model of Rudy Giuliani's New York City to remake Amsterdam, get ready to be shock. All Rudy did, was to scare people away and make new york city -- manhattan-- open for business for corporations. True that it was safe to walk at night in most places in new york city but socially and ethnically, new york city was in trouble when it came to police, education, housing, job gap for minorities and homelessness. Don't destroy a city on two ideas: human trafficking and tourists going there to do lawless activities. Change a city, do not destroy it. The mayor can police that area, use interpol and other european agencies to deal with human trafficking. As for lawless activities, humans are psychologically known as deviants. People will always do things that challenge order or authority. I always have admiration for that city stance on tolerance and open-mind in dealing with things that others see as taboo, and turning those taboos into an idea, discussion or something that normally is seen as prudish into something acceptable or that people can manage through order. I can only hope that this mayor think, ask and look at other cities that had something that define them as a city before taking away that historical item and seeing the end result--both negative and positive.

    With or without RLD Amsterdam has become boring,not very friendly and not very happy yuppi city.Amount and quality of creative flow in terms of events and activities is in serious decline comparing to ,let's say 10-15 years ago.On plus side city has beautiful,romantic apperance,Van Gogh museum and very nice Tropen Museum.If you look for 24/7 non stop -something is happening- situation,friendly people and all that for not much money go to Belgrade-Serbia,you willbe suprised.

    A lot of the prostitutes come in to the 'business' as kidnapped sex slaves. I don't think anybody just decides to become a prostitute and sell their body as a commodity, I think it's usually misery behind it. Most of the prositutes are from corrupt, poor and politically instable countries. I think prostitution is mostly a symptom of seious social problems.

    Don't forget that love is a human need as well.
