You may be onto something. Bush and his cronies have bled away oceans of red ink in Iraq; its hard to believe that there will be anything left for infrastructure, energy bills, health care or any of the accoutrements of a civilized society in the post-Bush years. Still, it rankles ... this "conservative" President has launched a war that is costing 18 million dollars every hour we're there, and anyone has the nerve to say that the Dems are spendthrifts? (Once again proving that all comedy is tragedy.)

The whole issue of John Mc Cain, to my mind, is fairly straightforward.
As someone who's spent his entire adult life overseas, my knowledge and understanding or American politics is, admittedly, limited. My decisions tend to be very personal. A recent example would be the race between George Bush and John Kerry. While I did NOT like the idea of another "Bush" in the White House so soon after George senior, I despised John Kerry for his treacherous behavior during the Vietnam War. As a veteran of that conflict, I was determined to vote for anyone other than Kerry. He was, in my eyes, unfit to be Commander-in-Chief.
In the present race for the White House, I find my self facing a similar predicament. I have been a Republican all my life but, if John Mc Cain becomes the Republican nominee, I will vote for his Democratic opponent, regardless of whom may be.
My beef with Mc Cain is visceral. I believe, in my heart, that the Senator is a proven liar. I believe, in my heart, that Mc Cain betrayed American servicemen who were abandoned in South East Asia after the fall of Saigon. Further, it is my absolute belief that Mc Cain knew full well that POW's and MIA's were left behind and used his position on the Senate Committee to suppress evidence that would prove that point.
I do not care a wit about the gaggle of questionable tin (medals) Mc Cain somehow bagged as a prisoner. Equally, I don't much care about the blatantly absurd suggestion that he is a "Great American Hero" , "A Hero of the Vietnam War" or "POW Hero." This is just overblown, sophomoric rhetoric with little connection to reality.
The fact that a man, who served in the military, would knowing betray those who were left behind is all the reason I need to know he should not be in the White House. Vote for John Mc Cain? Not on your life!
There's a reason why there are so many Vietnam Veterans Against Mc Cain.
And for those who find my appraisal of the Senator outrageous or, unbelievable, I suggest reading Bill Hendon's book, An enormous crime, before making a judgement. If Hendon's book is too daunting, read Barbara Birchim's story, Is anybody listening, A true story about POW/MIA's in the Vietnam War.
Mc Cain isn't the only one who betrayed his brotherhood and honor for political gain but, he's the one running for President. And he doesn't deserve to be Commander in Chief.

Mike35usmc, the people you refer to are Samply and Kiley who do not represent the general Vietnam vet. They have it out for McCain for his latter day support of Vietnam relations to be normailized and their belief that there are still POW's over there who were left out to dry by those negotiations. If there are or were POW's still in Vietnam, there are many others to blame besides McCain. These are the same idiots who trashed Kerry and maybe you are one of those also. I agree that Kerry was a lousy candidate but if you are truly a military man, you cannot be a Bush supporter. He and his people have made a huge mess in the occupation of iraq. And, it is an occupation, not a war. If we looked at it that way, we might begin to understand why ther Muslims hate us so much.

hey here is a news flash for you they hate our government, our society
our religous tolerance, womans rights, our personal freedoms it really has little to do with Bush
and everything to do with Muslim World Domination. Islam to the islamic extremists is the only
religon and it must be followed how they say.......or else you die, anyway else of believing must be destroyed ........no tolerance no questions
I don't know who the next President is going to be but we are at war with a enemy more dangerous
than nazi germany or imperial japan and we had better Win because if we don't and they win the World
will be ruled by those that will make HITLER LOOK LIKE CHILD PLAY.

    • Posted By: mike35usmc @ 02/11/2008 5:21:51 PM

I do NOT have to refer to Samply and Kiley. Decassified US goverment documents and historical news articles cannot be said to have been fabricated by the two men you mentioned. And while John Mc Cain does not bare the blame, alone, for the abandonment of POW's, he had a REAL opportunity to do something to help them and did NOT!
As far as Kerry is concerned, I didn't have to trash him. By his own actions, he trashed himself. The people who exposed Kerry were all COMBAT vets who saw far more combat than you did pal.
And don't try to lecture me about being a REAL MILITARY MAN. I sent my time ON THE GROUND, IN THE
JUNGLE, IN COMBAT. George Bush has NOTHING to do with it.

i'LL TAKE MY CHANCES WITH MC CAIN OBAMA OR HILLARY PROTECT THE COUNTRY?
At least McCain knows the Military......I believe that either one of the neosocialist democrats
would do damage beyond repair to our military....... ie Carter and Bill Clinton.

    • Posted By: mike35usmc @ 02/11/2008 7:40:09 PM

Bill, I apologize for the slam. If it wasn't for you guy's I'd been toast..more than once.
But, I just can't buy your take on Mc Cain. He's a really bad guy. And ANYONE who's
been where he's been, who could betray his fellow POW/MIA's is completely without
honor. Read Bill Hendon's An enormous crime if you want a real look at Mc Cain.

The chorus of dissent from, so called, right wing thought leadefs is all about commerce and not much about political pragmatism.

Messrs. Limbaugh, Hannity and Savage are all about building ratings and Ms. Coulter is all about selling books and getting big speaing fees. As such all are more interested in builing their audiences and personal incomes than in exercising any real judgement and resposible influence in the electoral proces.

By stirring disagrement, controversy and, in some cases, down right hatred, these individuals are appealing to our lesser angels and making a great deal of money doing it. El Rushbo knows that it is "good radio" to throw raw meat to many in his audience who see a conspiracy around every corner and a traitor in every citizen who dares to dsagree with a narrow, simplisic and one sided view of the world.

Until every citizen recognizes these pundits for what they really are....media stars who must build ratings and keep the pot boiling to feather their own nests. we will continue to dumb down political debate and allow the conservative agenda and discussions about how to prevent a liberal takeover of the White House. Simply put, John McCain is the most coservative person running for President and any thing these "stars" do to depress turn out and invovlement by conservaties (of every stripe) is tantamount to turning over the White House to the Democrat Party for the next two decades.

Rush and his ilk like to condemn anyone who disagrees with parts of their agenda and who dares to ask questions about the competence of this Administration as being "treasonous" and "a traitor." One of the definions of "traitor" is "one who betrays his cause or a trust." In my opinion what they are doing now is not only betraying a trust, they are doing so for the most crass of reasons. Look up some of the non-sexual applications of "prostitue."

Actually, Norquist and "Movement Conservatives" are NOT conservative. They are radicals who want to remake society based upon abstract theories beneficial to their ruling cadre, but which have no basis in empirical experience, and are completely unworkable.

That view assumes that society is organic, tradition matters, and that many things that appear to work --if imperfectly --should be preserved because you really can't do much better, even if the intellectuals THINK they can.

So McCain's "right" friend are right wing communists? How charming....

I have an idea. How about if John McCain just remains John McCain. Do we really want another president who goes around with his finger in the air, looking for the prevailing wind. For example, did anybody not want to upchuck watching that foolish display of John McCain telling us that Mitt Romney ran an honorable campaign. That must be the doubletalk express. I'll stick with Mike Huckabee, win or lose.

Intelligent people do not watch Rush/Ann/Laura/Sean or ANY LIBERAL...there is always a motive to their madness - unfortunately, they omit the RIGHTEOUNESS OF TELLING THE TRUTH, and spew their venom for ratings! Their opinions are like pholes, everyone has one with no specific value to ANY OF THOSE!!! Research on your own, and be VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT SUCKED IN BY THESE WANNABEE JOURNALISTS/REPORTERS!!!

  • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 02/13/2008 9:40:48 AM

The problem with the word "conservative" is, like the word "liberal" nobody knows anymore what the words really mean.

On the subject of no new taxes, that would be a fiscal conservative, which certainly leaves out John McCain - just how does he expect to pay for on ongoing presence in Iraq, a war in Afghanistan (why are we there, again - does anyone know?) and the other huge expansions in military spending he proposes?

If he truly believes in fiscal conservatism and no new taxes, there will be no money for new roads, new schools, education, health care, social security reform, etc, just money for a huge military.

With McCain you are left (no pun intended) with two choices: holding the line on current spending which would make us a military state (similar to the old USSR, and we know what happened to them) or raising taxes to pay for it.

Or there is the other, time-honored way - deficit spending.

Why is it ok to rack up huge deficits for the war on terrorism but not the war on poverty?

McCain can have the conservatives. Or whatever we're calling them these days. I call them people in fear, people who are clinging to the illusion of a past status quo that disappeared decades ago.

It's a new millenium, folks. The old ways didn't work in the old days, and they won't work now.

  • Posted By: nystarnailz @ 02/12/2008 2:44:54 PM

I couldn't agree more that the Rush/Ann/Laura/Sean crowd has targeted McCain, hoping for a Democratic win that will only boost their ratings. Can't go wrong by plugging into the gullibility of the American public.

I used to be a Republican. The Republican party is now a bunch of angry quacks who want to spend us into oblivion over the fear of Terrorism. Frankly a little terrorism once in awhile is better than 10 billions dollars a month to ward against it. I'm still a conservative, just not a REPUBLICAN. Spending like drunken sailors on defense is just another federal government boondoggle. I want a true anti-government, reduce government candidate.

Please, Women who can see through Hillary speak up now. There is such an apparent acceptance of all of Hillary's BS by American women that it is nauseating.

  • Posted By: BBcinci @ 02/11/2008 9:28:21 PM

I am a conservative who will not be satisfied with John McCain no matter what he says. He has been far too soft on the Left and somehow thinks that "working with" them is virtuous. I will NEVER EVER vote FOR either of the two Communists the Democrats are offering no matter how angry I am. Huckabee/Hunter I would consider but I don't want any talk from them other than 100% Conservative right down the line.

  • Posted By: sharonann.tomal @ 02/11/2008 6:32:02 PM

I would NEVER vote for the 2 socialists that are running-Clinton and Obama. McCain may not be the perfect candidate, but he does support capitalism and is not afraid to protect us when necessary. Whatever those of you may think about him, he did spend 5 and a half years as a POW. I am a Vietnam War Veteran (with the 63rd supply squadron). I spent 4 years with the Air Force. He is the only person capable of knowing what protecting this country is all about. By the way, I'm a 56 year old female who should be supporting Hillary Clinton. I will support McCain fervently in November.

    • Posted By: mike35usmc @ 02/11/2008 7:45:58 PM

Sharonann, you can't possibly believe what you said, that John Mc Cain is the "only person capable of knowing what protecting this country is all about." What about all those other servicemen who fought for this country? Why on earth would you think being a POW would qualify a person to do anything?
I spent two years in the jungles of Vietnam...fighting. Can you really believe that Mc Cain knows more about protecting this country than I do?? Nonsense.

  • Posted By: phs3860 @ 02/11/2008 7:15:47 PM

I ponder that someone whom calls themselves a fiscal conservative usually means less on spending on social concerns but greater spending for defense, business interest priorities, etc. Criticism directed to one viewpoint of the other only distracts from the simple math...both are deficit spending by a government that acts like it knows best.

  • Posted By: citizen123 @ 02/11/2008 5:45:14 PM

I don't support John McCain on his liberal stances on important issues.

It does not matter to me if Pres. Bush comments that he thinks McCain is a 'true conservative" becuase I know better! Bush is not even a true conservative! Bush has taken some very liberal stances on important issues; such as illegal immigration that most real republicans do not approve of or support!
