Hmmmm! I wonder how many votes Hilary received because of racism? And, how many votes Obama received because of prejudice against women? I'm sure there werre some "prejudice votes" on both sides and the attitudes which were behind these votes will cause those same people to consider voting Republican if their candidate doesn't win the party's nomination. We will probably never know how many, but prejudice votes will be cast and could possibly swing the majority to the Republican candidate. My mother, a native of Iowa and a staunch Democrat haw always voted a straight Democratic ticket, told me she will not vote for either Obama or Hilary. Is this a prejudice vote? Yes, but she would never admit it to anyone. I think the article made a good point.

I think it's interesting that psychologists are studying racism because I have long thought that racism should be classified as a mental illness. Racism has no logic behind it--only emotion and ignorance. To judge, or even worse, to hate someone simply and solely based on their skin color is insane. It's time this mental malady be classified for what it truly is: a sickness that must be cured once and for all.

Oh, he forgot to mention something.

People may also be prejudice against white males.
They are all money-hungry, racist, mysogynistic jerks.

While I have no doubts there will always be some level of racism in this country, throughout the globe I do believe the US in general can rise above it. Having said that I find it interesting that people are willing to vote for a man who has no credentials other than he is an inspirational speaker. It also shows how easily Americans are swayed by a good ad campaign. "Change"? What a load of poppycock! He will no more change the way things are done in DC than any of his predecessors! And the problem is he plays to the demographics of a group that he has no more in common with than any other candidate! Interesting is all I can say!

I must be missing something. I've read this thing twice, and I have yet to see what this has to do with Barack Obama running for president.. The inference drawn seems to be way too wide and almost irrelevant for the times..

So what does that mean for people? Is it possible to change our inner selves? And if we still make an effort to treat people well, does it even matter?

    • Posted By: jpries1 @ 02/12/2008 9:41:01 AM

My 2 cents: Maybe it's only relevant for people who were born pre-1960's; but as a child in the 60's I was exposed to bias of previous generations....but also came of age during the "MTV era" of the 1980's; a generation that moved forward with removing more barriers of racial prejudices that were handed to us. The kids (and Hollywood, very influential but sometimes slow) of today continue to move that as well. I love seeing my kids have friend of all races and not even realizing how disparged they would have been years ago. But....if there is a hidden or subconscious mindset to bias, then it's certainly in an older generation - like the author is from. You can see this clearly in Barack Obama's appeal - his strongest base us "under 40", and especially high in the "Under 25" range. They don't care about race, they want an influential leader with inspires them and will clean up the government mess. But I digress, If I asked my parents to vote for a black man; it would be an uphill battle. So that is why Hillary Clinton gets the "Over 60" vote, as she is 60 herself. They can digest a woman president (Womens right to vote ended in early 20th century) better than a black one (Equal Rights of the 1960's)....still clinging to the teachings and values of their younger days. Progress is rarely quick, but the biases of each generation fade as they pass on. If Obama wins it all, it's American finally taking the next step on the ladder to true racial equality. :) But more steps to take...

I grew up in Detroit .. going to school with mixed racial students .. there were no ill feelings but
I find that as an adult .. some racial adults discripinate more against the whites .. they even
violate the law of the land as a means to show they are above the law .. that is wrong ..

Stupid Article! Get a real job!! It is so digusting to hear you perpetuate this race issue on voting day. CHANGE will happen regardless. Watch out Washington, I hear the footsteps of CHANGE nearing!!

Oh please. Why is it when whites don't vote for blacks, it is secret racism. It can't be because they disagree with the candidate's politics, could it? Does that mean that the 90% of blacks that didn't vote for Clinton are closet racist mysogenists? Stupid article.

  • Posted By: Sully978 @ 02/12/2008 9:26:56 AM

There's a lot of talk of the racial divide in the voting for the Democratic Presidential nomination. If there's so much racism out there, how did Obama win lily-white states like Iowa, Maine, Nebraska, Kansas, Utah, and North Dakota?

Obama won each of these states convincingly, and they all have less than 5 percent black populations.

Maine, Utah and North Dakota are less than 1 percent black!

The coverage of ethnic and gender breakdowns of voting trends stems from the incessant 24-hour coverage of these primaries, and the on-air personalities needing something to talk about to fill the time while waiting for results. This is a fabricated non-story, and the perpetuation of this myth is harmful to efforts to move forward in America.

So, it's racial if whites don't vote for a black candidate? What is it if blacks don't vote for a white candidate?

I know it must have been the over whelming black vote that helped Obama in Iowa. News reporters see racial issues if you open a can of coke with your left hand or your right hand.

A friend of mine was wronged by an employee at his place of work and henceforth was going to leave and go to another job and on his way out he told me " I am going over to so and so place and everyone is going to know what a terrible place this is." It hurt me because i knew his history and heart and he was really just reacting to ONE BAD APPLE and applying it to the whole bunch. How often a wrong is brought by one and the whole group suffers??? Way too often!! i found myself getting caught up in the same hate when 5-0 was shot by an "illegal" alien. i for some reason assigned that shooting to the countless masses of GREAT Mexican Americans. i don't know why i do such evil but i am working on stopping it. i see the same thing happening in mainstream when Catholic Priests who have devoted themselves to God and serve to the point of death millions over and a couple worms sneak in and all of a sudden it is all the priests. That logic is easy to string out and (thankfully) easy to break down. Just with a wait a minute how many great Catholic nuns and priests selflessley sacrificed for me over and over and never once hinted of sickness pedophile whatever. But that is the problem when you are so big. If people want to you are a BIG TARGET. It takes no skill to shoot at you. It is up to me if it sticks and thank God it doesn't even come close.
