I find these comments the most interesting and prove the authors case, finding them riddled with self-defense, and guilt. I myself am half white, and half Native-American but can pass for either on any given day... The racism I have myself witnessed, heard throughout my life, from people that thought I was a "safe space to create hate" and then have also had it slung directly at me. I really appreciate this article for bringing to light a very deep-seeded, hidden truth...Racism is still alive and well today, by all of us. Anyone who is too scared to admit that, has a lot of self-healing to do in front of the mirror. Get real and be true.... My greatest fear (even though I myself am a long-time Hillary supporter), is that when it comes time, If Obama becomes the candidate, Americans will recess into their old, fear-based, comfort-zone and he will not win because of this. But I hope that I am wrong. I hope that this is not true. I hope when it comes time, people will not play "defense," make excuses, believe stories of why they just can't support and actually step up to the plate and KEEP IT REAL!!!

This is more overrated than what people think.

This study itself is done since prejudice is a rather popular topic in our society, "still". Well, it is a serious topic, yet whites are not totally the problem in today's society.

What people forget is that whites are not the major problem today. As an Asian, and seeing various cultures, I get to say one thing, everyone is prejudice and non-whites are more prejudice than people might believe. If you lived in Mexico, for an example, you will see that general Mexican population is very prejudice towards non-Mexicans or non-south Americans. One thing is clear is that there is socioeconomic and education factors. Smaller to mid cities tend to be more prejudice in very open ways.

From all the encounters, black people are more prejudice or even ignorant at a point where they believe they are not being prejudice to others while they definitely are.

Black people, generally, have made many unsettling comments to me about general Asian cultures in erratic ways. If white people said those things to non-whites, it would have been a serious issue. Since they are black, we simply look away due to political correctness hanging over our society.

Only difference is this. We live in a society (in the U.S.), where whites own more capitals than any other races. Asians, generally, have adequate amount of capitals that they do not *** too much to whites. They tend to build their own social capital as well, so they do not rely too much on non-Asian markets in the U.S. Hispanics in the U.S. are growing and they too do same thing as Asians as they make their own market. For Hispanics, they get to be in upper hand in most cases since the market is sometimes too profitable that other races want to jump in. Well, let's look at blacks. They do not own much capitals nor they feed within their own race. This means that only thing that is going for them is political power. This, yes, they do use quite often. I understand that many blacks do not have enough resources to grow, but that's just an excuse. When I was kid, I lived in heavy black-hispanic neighborhood. As growing up, I saw many hispanic friends making good living and successfully got out of the place that they were once in. I, too, got out successfully. This is more cultural issue than anything else. You cannot blame people for making good money or money than you. Race has nothing to do with it.. Prejudice will always be there, but it should not determine our society. This study is prejudice since it is generalizing people.

As far as women, gays, and others, I would not know how they are being treated since I could never quite see their lives clearly. I do see that women are not fairly treated in our society. Though, I must say that they are making big as time passes and I believe that's a good thing. If you go to a large multi-billion dollar company, number of mid and top managers are women. So, something must be working.

I think it is an excellent article, and long overdue. I can tell from the heated comments that you have stepped on the toes of some of those sensitive closet racists. However, it doesn't take all of this to tell if one is biased or racist; all you have to do is get in their element, a majority of their own race or kind.

Whether it???s at work or play, if you are the only minority there, the racist will let you know his/her thoughts and feelings about you. They do this because they feel safe in an environment of like-minded people. Like a virus needs a compatible environment to breed, so does racism.

If you don't practice racism, what someone says about it doesn't offend you. A real racist will never admit he is a racist. In the recent Tiger Woods incident where the golf reporter said those racist things, she was just doing what she and those around her practice. The same can be said with Dwayne ???Dog??? Chapman. Again, racism has to be condoned by others in the environment in order for it to grow. If you don't practice that behavior or belief, you never have to worry about slipping and saying something derogatory.

I certainly have my biases. For example, I have a deep bias against pedaphiles, murderers, rapists, and thieves. And I must admit I'm also a hater of drug dealers, communists, neo-nazis, and terrorists. But I reserve my strongest bias against peddlers of politically-motivated pseudoscience representing themselves as people with something intelligent to say rather than the absolute con-artists they are. I guess that means I'm biased against con-artists as well.

I took the IAT test last year in a psych class at the University of Michigan, and although at first I was excited, I soon came to realize that it was pretty pointless. I think everyone holds opinions and often prejudices about people who are different from them. It all depends on your point of view. Predujice against the elderly? Well wouldn't the elderly have some prejudice against the young as well? I don't really think much is being accomplished here, unfortunately.

I think that someone needs to point out that prejudice is not only against race, sex, orientation, and drug habits, but that there is also a lot of prejudice against the overweight and obese. Just hearing even some of my own friends talking about people who are larger, it's obvious that we tend to exclude them.

This country has a caste system perpertrated by a mock democracy. We can be a great nation but structured privilege (i.e. racial caste, economic caste), won't allow it because we are afraid to face our demons. Diversity is a smoke screen permeated with hate. Unfortunately this country's foundation is a bastion of hate. Until we see one another as part of the human family there will be no change.

The article makes no sense since the writer still talks like a racist by illustrating and describing blacks as drug addicts. People like you have decided not to see the good side of blacks, even as it is obvious that not all whites are clean and responsible. No race can claim they are all good and clean.

Not only do I agree with lindy919 on the subject of Obama, but I find this article completely rediculous. I hold a master's degree in Sociology, and while I am only 26 years old and did not see the racisim of the 50's, I have witnessed more racisim from black people than from any other race. When can we as white people enjoy any type of television program where a black character is featured, and the typical, stale, "white" jokes aren't thrown in? Using the same syntax by a white character and a black character is the "butt" of the joke, all hell would break loose via the media. I'm honestly exhausted with it being some supposed crime for being white. I would also be interested in knowing how many dollars were spent doing the research for this article. If the author is so completely concerned with observing how poorly black people have been treated by white bias, why weren't those dollars donated to the United Negro College Fund?

Re: "The Secret Haters". The world and mankind is in a constant state of change. This kind of psycho-babble over-analyzing is ridiculous. I don't think we are necessarily prejudice of one another. I think it is more the fear of the unknown. Blacks are largely surrounded by blacks... it's their family! Whites the same... Oriental... Gay.... There is a comfort level with the known, we have more trust. Put any of us out of our normal element and we become uncomfortable and more fearful. I think we have made great progress in tolerance and that calms fears... for everyone.

all good stuff...and to add to it, how on god's green earth can you associate the feelings that people may (or more likely in modern times) or may not have towards drug addicts with racism. What a sell out. Or perhaps just a blatant racist.

  • Posted By: tawanda24 @ 02/15/2008 2:59:18 AM

What an amazingly pointless article. The author contriubuted nothing. No one will ever benefit from reading this. How inappropriate to pretend to have any appreciation of these studies that are referred to when the author clearly has no idea what is actually implicated. Clearly it is not racism. It is articles like this that perpetuated the racist idealogy to begin with. How very sad, pointless, uneducated, and manipulative.

the definition of racist is not liking a person. the defiiniton of racist is seeing yourself superior toward a specific ethnic group. i'll say it again...ethnic group. like whites inherently thinking they are superior to black people or even any people of color. its the eurocentric poison. not liking women or gays or the physically challenged, etc is not "racist". biased? perhaps. but not racist. another thing black people are not racist. black people have never been in any position to feel superior to whites. blacks are not taught from childhood either subliminally or literally they are in some way "better" than blacks. blacks however are taught we must do twice as more and/or be twice as good to even hopefully be considered equal. never are black people taught they are better than whites. therefore black people are not "taught" to be racist. white people need to know this. black pople are reactionary to white people. if black people dont like white people its because of current or past mis-treatments to themselves or others black. and yes even the stain of slavery causes blacks to look at whites as an enemy or even diabolical. white pople conveniently are afflicted with amnesia when it comes to race. they absolve themselves of anything the "forefathers" have done. they practice escapism when it comes to the race issue. yet inherently they want to be black. they bake in the sun for hours. the women plump their lips now and get butt butt reconstruction trying to have "junk in da trunk".
they just dont want to accpet the stigma of being black.

Wow. You saying that Blacks can't be racist is completely laughable. Racists come from every race whether it be White, Black or Asian and doesn't matter what ethnic group or ethnicity. "never put into any position to feel superior.." wow. Understand that racism exist in every race. You stooped very low with your comment because you are basically pushing the idea that all whites are racists. I myself am white, my

I do not how deep we want to go back, but in esence we as human being we are prejudices against any thing we say or we think. Religion most the time will give a chance of staying in the left or rigth side of the issue. That is not meaning that is right or wrong , but it gives the chance to think about it.

It's incredible that I'm reading this today, because, only yesterday were a few friends and I talking about the same thing. I'm an Indian(not native American, Indian from India) and so many times have I been in situations where prejudice was shown to me by 'Whites'. At first i tolerated it, i guess i was scared for some reason, but now I've learned to stand up for my self.
