It is a cognitive trait of humans to group individuals into categories. It's a way of perceiving the world: understanding an object by its relation to other objects in terms of similarity or difference. This becomes a problem when an individual is continually perceived based on his/her grouping into a category. When someone makes a blanket statement like, "Men are all ____," or "The French are all _____," this is a way of simplifying the world, viewing a large mass of people as a unified, undeconstructable being.
We'll never be able to rewire our brain to not compare and contrast people, or place them into categories. The most important thing we CAN do is understand why we stereotype or categorize and work our hardest to break down our understanding of each person so that we recognize each one of them for the highly complex and unique beings they are.
