It is not prejudice to take longer to sort out images rather than blank notes with words. How do we know our minds aren't trying to process an extra image now added to words. It may not have anything to do with the actual people in the the images. You've just added a second part to the equation. Of course it'll take longer. Dang. Now we are prejudice by miliseconds of study. For being so clever, once again, psychologists are pretty dumb.

Leave it to the liberal PC police to try and stomp out any perceived vestiges of bias, even where none exist. So typical.

In calling constiuents in Virginia, one man replied, "I am intelligent ---- my wife and daughter plan to vote for Hillary Clinton." This represents the prejuice people who are older feel over the polls which state "the young and more intelligent voters favour Obama. Give me a break. F. Barrows

geneg, Hillary Clinton technically doesn't have experience in World Leadership either it was her husband who did and neither does John McCain, so based on your criteria non of the candidates are qualified to be president.

It is clear to me that racism still exists today but the tone has changed. I do agree that racism has been pushed to the underground and has never been stronger in the black communities. It is not longer the case that whites are keeping the blacks down. I find more hatred among blacks for whites today than ever before. No other race gets away with using race as a defense or as an excuse. Blacks can say and do things no other race can get away with in todays society. We live in the land of opportunity. Privilage is achieved with hard work and education. The sooner everyone figures that out the sooner we can move away from excuses for not having privileges. Privilege is not handed out by whites - it is earned.

    • Posted By: helpfulheroine @ 02/12/2008 3:18:45 PM

Yeh, you are not very smart or observant. There are many minorities who work harder than any ten white people put together. Privilege is NOT achieved with hard work and education. Privilege is only given to those who the privileged feel like handing it out to, and it is almost always to those who look and act and are just like them. And in America today, the privileged are the white anglo-saxon protestant males. If you believe otherwise, you do not understand much about American society. If I marry someone Jewish or black or Asian, I will not be allowed into the same clubs that I am already a member, that all of my family has been member for generations. This mentality extends from private clubs to universities and businesses and government alike. Do not be so naïve as to think that an Asian-American is held to the same standards as any other race when getting into college. Asians must have higher SAT scores and grades than all other applicants to compete with them, all other factors being the EXACT same, aside from their race.

Oh no, privilege is NOT achieved by hard work and education. Yes, it helps a little, but more than anything, it???s all luck. Luck of being born to rich parents, luck to be born white.

But then again, non-whites have the luck of being born with a lot more culture and sense of self.

      • Posted By: thedrk @ 02/13/2008 2:55:35 PM

You just made my point. You try to attack my intelegence and make excuses for your lack of success and privialedge through race. College entry scores are posted publically and set as the curriculum by the institution. If you are not smart enough to meet those requirments what makes you think it is due to race? If you are suddenly not allowed in clubs where you are already a memeber it is probably because you offer nothing to the group or they simply don't like you - not because of the color of your skin or your wifes skin for that matter. I assure you luck has little to do with it. Culture and sense of self comes from within.

Well I think while educated voters are showing up to the polls and voting for Obama, I am amazed at the racism I see and hear people speaking of in my cirlce of friends and at the numbers at the polls. Obama's numbers among hispanics and asians are low - and i contend that is because of racism. If you look at his plans for immigration, granting driver's licenses for illegals, something Hillary is opposed to - you would think he would be getting the Hispanic vote.
But I do agree, sexism is running rampant too. It's disgusting to see the number of women I know voting for Hillary just because she is a woman. People are ignorant and need to get informed. I am a woman and I vote for women and would love to see a woman president, but I wouldn't have voted for her for Senator. What are her qualifications? She was married to Bill? She moved to New York city to become a senator that should tell you all you need to know about her dirty politics.

    • Posted By: Time for Change @ 02/13/2008 2:50:16 PM

She moved to New York because the D.C. Metropolitan area knows her well. What should that tell the rest of the country when D.C., Maryland and Virginia overwhelming vote for Obama? If the Clintons were that great, we would want them back in this area. Obama received 60% of the women's vote here in Virginia. We would totally stand behind a woman if she were the right one.

I do hope though that when Hilary wins because of her experience and leadership that there will not be an outcry from the black public that Barack lost because of his race. If this happens it will be a sad day in american history and the black leaders who in some cases sacrificed their lives will be turning in their graves to hear the negative impact it will have when Barack loses.

Well it seems the Govenor of Pennsylvania has already started this augument before the election has even ended. He said to the associated press ( check it out.) his people won't vote for Obama because of his skin color. I'm afraid blacks can't be blamed for this augument. The governor is white.

'Racism' is universal. I lived in the SF Bay area for 35 years, and lived in a well integrated upper class neighborhood with excellent excellent schools. The Chinese did not like the Persians, the Vietnamese, or the blacks. The blacks did not like the Asians as they were very successful and raised the school standards so that it was hard for their children to compete. I could go on and on, but my point is, when you talk about

    RRacism'Racism'

    • Posted By: Tabitha @ 02/13/2008 12:59:05 PM

"....raised the standards so that it was hard for their children to compete"?!?!?!? Are you implying that the children of your black neighbors are inherently inferior or less intelligent? Why exactly then, would their parents be "upset" that school standards are high? This is exactly the point that the article is trying to make. Prejudice and stereotypes are so ingrained in the psyches of some that they do not even realize that they are sprouting (and thus perpetuating) this drivel.

      • Posted By: Time for Change @ 02/13/2008 2:16:08 PM

You are assuming the blacks hated the Chinese because of standards being raised. I doubt the black parents picketed with signs contesting the raised standards. Most are complainng about the poor state of schools in their communities.

Unless I act on my dark, unconscious impulses, so what? We can judge another only by his behavior not by what he is or may be thinking. To do otherwise would be deeply intrusive and a violation of human dignity. I find it hard to believe that any legal theorist would want to incorporate this test into law, unless he subscribes to some infamous law of which I'm unaware.

Dewcooper, I agree with what you wrote in response to my first comment. If anyone has taken a psychology class they most likely have heard of Pavlov's Dog. The experiment where Pavlov would ring a bell before feeding his dog so that eventually the dog began to associate bell ringing with food. If the dog heard any type of sound that resembled a bell his first instict would be "time to eat." This is the same technique the media/entertainment industry uses. They show a certain image over and over so that, we as viewers, start to associate that image with reality.

Uh, dew, you mis-read his opening line. He was saying rasicm was blatant. The word means brazenly obvious.....

Uh, dewcooper, you mis-read his opening statement. He's saying that in the 50's, racism was blatant. That means it was there, and it was open racism, not hidden like you might find today. Read it again.

I went over to my parent's house one evening and a news segment on TV sparked a discussion between my mother and me. She mentioned that a black man had come to the door and was selling something. Now my mother was honest with me and said she hesitated to open the door and was a bit weary of his presence in the neighborhood. I knew she wouldn't have been as uncomfortable if the man had been white. She was expressing some predjudice, but rightfully so. You see our neighborhood/town's residents are predominantly white and we have never seen a black person in our neighborhood before. So this particular gentlemen seemed out of place. Now my mother lived in Boston and Chicago at one time and was around and worked with many people from different cultures. The problem is she has become accustomed to a certain way of living now and her reaction was based on that. My mom got very defensive when I said that her reaction was a bit predjudiced, because she doesn't think she is. I said Mom you have lived here for 25 years and have probably only interacted with a black person on a few occasions so your way of thinking has been reshaped. We are wasting money on research, studies, tests, and experiments to prove something that is already known to us! Nobody is willing to be honest anymore. I have no problem discussing race, predjudice etc. We don't need to be hooked up to some brain monitor, we just need to have an HONEST discussion!

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/13/2008 9:51:06 AM

How many times has your Mom, or any of us for that matter, seen on the news a member of a 'minority' community being suspected, arrested, charged or sentance for a crime? How many times in a TV show or movie is the minority the criminal? Does that make her or the rest of society racist or 'conditioned'? Is the media reflecting society or painting it?

  • Posted By: Survivor-mi50 @ 02/13/2008 9:18:19 AM

More "Pop-psyc?" Mr. Herbert, you didn't "see" minorties in your 50s life in NJ, because you couldn't "see" them. Let's get real, here. Everyone of us has preferences, based on experience, knowledge, and choice. It's certainly not a topic for an article - or is it? Frankly, other than defraying your own introspection, this is a mute point. Our nation will continue to progress, and learn, as it has in the past. Change is part of life.

There are different kinds and levels of racism.
Racism is very entrenched in our society to the point we don???t notice it.
Lots of it is innocent, a person can be racist when they mean well. It comes from ignorance and lack of experience with "others". An example, I have black friends who have to tell people they don???t like watermelon and Gay friends who have told people they don???t have the decorating gene. Or not thinking about race until someone makes it clear because they go out of their way to be nice. It is really subtle sometimes. It goes on with all groups. Not to say there may be a basis for those assumptions. We all have some more than others. When is it racism and when is it awareness? I think it is a very gray area.

Then there are the more serious versions of racism. Am I being racist when I am aware of danger when I am with a homogenous group not my race? That I feel that when the chips are down I can be in danger. I learn this from what happens when times are tough and immigrants are blamed. That is bad it seems true.

I used to think I didn???t have any racist tendencies being mixed and all. But I noticed that when being stressed out dealing with a different race, thoughts do form. Me being aware of it has, helped me deal with the thoughts and the gray area.

Is it racism or simply fear of the unkown or fear of the stereo-types the media propagates?
