Great now that you have looked at Dr Paul's "outlandish" claims, please examine the other candidates "outlandish" claims. You'll love what you find. What about discussing rejection of the principle of preemptive war, the constitution's state that only congress can declare war, and the Federal Reserve - a private bank that Dr Paul opposes which has heavy influence over the stock market and the America people's debt-based lives, which also disobeys the constitution in that it only Congress should be able to print money.

Joe Miller, I am FURIOUS with your ignorance! I live in Waller, Texas. At a meeting with TxDot officials on January 22, 2008, we were informed that our land is within the FIVE MILE WIDE swath of land that will be taken for the Trans Texas Corridor, the southern leg of the NAFTA Superhighway. You think it's a myth? We were informed that under our Texas Governor Rick Perry's new "Quick Take" law, we will be "relocated by the government" and that it will happen within 90 days of emminent domain proceedures. We will be "removed by force" if necessary, and the state government is "not required to pay fair compensation for the loss of value of our property". You should check out the TURF website, a Texas group trying to stop this catastrophy. Corridor watch. Also, your readers of this comment should go to www.spp.com. You KNOW this is real. I know you have access to the A.P. and Reuters, because even I have access to it. The protests against the NAFTA Superhighway in Walker County, Texas and Victoria were covered up by mainstream media. They went unreported because you and your ilk want to convince people it won't happen to them until it is too late. If they succeed because of your assistance, I hope they pave your home, like they will pave mine. You have no right to try to hide what Bush and Perry are trying to do to Texas residents. You have no right to cover up the propaganda being put out in other states, Colorado for example, championing the cause of the NAFTA Superhighway and using Texas as an example, just as though they will take our land without having to kill us all! Who do you think you are? What will you eat after they have paved the breadbasket of the world? There is NO other land like ours anywhere on the globe. The foreigners can barely feed themselves, how do you expect them to feed us? I have an idea for you and other Neo-Con reporters like you. You should go to Iraq and throw yourself at the guns of Shias to defend the Suni cousins of the 9/11 hijackers we are helping to control Iraqi oil. If you don't like Ron Paul's message, perhaps you like John McCain's message better. He wants you to fight "many more wars" and fight them for "100 years". They need people, so if you like McCain, get your sorry, yellow, behind to Iraq. Why do you think a big paycheck relieves you of your responsibility to serve this nation in combat? It doesn't. It cements your responsibility to fight for freedom. The freedom our soldiers are supposed to be fighting for is being taken away from us by Bush and Rick Perry right here at home. When you get done in Iraq, there might be a little skirmish here in Texas you'll have to deal with too, but most of us (myself included) are former military so it might just be more work than you want to do. If you can't do your research and get this reporting job right, John McCain has a job for you. You can go fight to defend the Arabs

Thanks for coming out of the closet, Newsweek. Now I can stop buying your dumbing-down smear propaganda.

You lost me on your paragraph about Ron Paul's claims on the NAFTA superhighway. This is poorly researched tripe. It makes me question the content of your publication. Okay so you believe Ron Paul is a crackpot. Do you not think that some of the points he has raised are valid? Irresponsible FED, US overconsumption, loss of Habeas Corpus, Patriot Act. Do you also not think that it is time that we at least start to investigate new ways of dealing with the war on Drugs/ Terror? Wake up America, Ron Paul has highlighted some serious issues which will be detrimental if not addressed!

*NAFTA superhighway covered by CNN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsvZys5hF4Y

*Newsweek fails to mention that in 1976, Ron Paul was one of only four Republican Congressmen to endorse Ronald Reagan for President.

I would also like to make note that Newsweek's consistent wide-spread coverage of pro-war candidates, while neglecting or attacking pro-peace candidates is very telling indeed. It certainly suggests that the people running the publication are pro-war. Such individuals are both shameful and disgusting.

  • Posted By: jlahtinen@hotmail.com @ 02/13/2008 2:44:20 AM

Way to attack the candidate who would end the occupation of Iraq and would end the War on Drugs. You pump propaganda pieces all day long about McCain, who has openly stated that he would have us remain in Iraq for up to 100 years. It is looking more and more these days like Newsweek has become just another Murdoch-style propaganda rag. I won't be renewing my subscription.

To be sure, this is not a very strong rebuttal of Paul???s platform. It is a very vain attempt to discredit a presidential candidate who probably has the most consistent and coherent approach to the problems facing the U.S. today. In fact, your piece looks very much like the posts scribbled by some of the Ron Paul bloggers whom you seem to attack. Coming from Newsweek, this is not only very disappointing but it also makes you wonder what kind of people Newsweek hires to write such high school level articles.

wow, while you may have pointed out a few misstatements and exaggerations by Dr. Paul, I'm guessing you won't be taking the time to take a break from writing Obama puff pieces and actually ask any major candidate how they will avert the financial crisis hitting the US with 50 trillion in long term liabilities. It shocking how you literally ignored Dr. Paul the entire race and haven't reported on how his policies would have prevented the dollar bubble, the war in Iraq and the needless spying on American due to the Patriot Act. Great going Time, I'm just glad I stop subscribing to your magazine a long time ago.

Nevermind the man behind the curtain....but go after Paul with your weak attempt at trying to discredit him has Newsweek at an all-time low!

On May 10, 2007, Conservative MP Leon Benoit, chair of the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade, prevented University of Alberta professor Gordon Laxer from testifying that SPP would leave Canadians "to freeze in the dark" because "Canada itself ??? unlike most industrialized nations ??? has no national plan or reserves to protect its own supplies" by saying Laxer's testimony was not relevant, defying a majority vote to overrule his motion, shutting down the Committee meeting, and leaving with the other three out of four Conservative members; the meeting later continued presided by the Liberal vice-chair. [11] After these disruptions, the National Post reported on a Conservative party manual to, among other things, usurp Parliamentary committees and cause chaos in unfavorable committees. [12] [13] The New Democratic Party has also criticized SPP for being undemocratic, not open to Parliament, and opaque [14]; New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton described the process as not simply unconstitutional, but "non-constitutional," held completely outside the usual mechanisms of oversight. Google Trans Texas Corridor. Joe Miller is a pawn.

Trans Texas Corridor is a real thing taking real land from Americans. The lease is held by Spain, who also collects all tolls. Call it what you want, but it's purpose is to facilitate the movment of goods through Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. This is a wiki excerpt on what happened in the Canadian Parliment when it was opposed,-On May 10, 2007, Conservative MP Leon Benoit, chair of the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade, prevented University of Alberta professor Gordon Laxer from testifying that SPP would leave Canadians "to freeze in the dark" because "Canada itself ??? unlike most industrialized nations ??? has no national plan or reserves to protect its own supplies" by saying Laxer's testimony was not relevant, defying a majority vote to overrule his motion, shutting down the Committee meeting, and leaving with the other three out of four Conservative members; the meeting later continued presided by the Liberal vice-chair. I canceled my subscription then and this does not make me want to renew my subscription now. Some would quote Ron Paul out of context but you misquote him all together. You call yourself Newsweek. How about the propoganda weekly.

  • Posted By: talljimbo @ 02/13/2008 1:55:15 AM

I have googled news for 4 months and never hit on a Ron Paul piece by Newsweek until now. Why now and not back in December before most everyone voted. I can't believe Newsweek and its timing. I'm sorry, but MSM basically ignored Ron Paul; lack of articles, not allowing him in one debate, and the other debates were rigged to not give him equal time, equal number of questions. I hope we Ron Paul people can stay together and remold the Republican party. We need new candidates at the lower levels and Congress.

You should do a little fact-checking before making derogatory statements about an honorable man who speaks the truth.

The "NAFTA Superhighway" IS in the works (http://www.nascocorridor.com/) and is even being funded by Congress (http://www.nascocorridor.com/pages/federal/federal.htm). Ask the folks in Texas - they're already dealing with it as our government is seizing their land to build the highway (Trans Texas Corridor). The NAU (North American Union) is on the way: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=205004696&blogID=313179052
