If they want to protest the US Marine Corp I think they should first go live in another country for 1 year. If & when these unfortunate, and pathetic people return than maybe they will respect their neighbors & fellow countrymen who have given their lives, and the proud ones who still do.

"Oops," you did it again. Question: have you ever even traveled outside of Nascarland Dixie, let alone live in another country or a year? Btw, see my syllogism for an explanation of why the high school dropout loser jarheads get my support...in the form of workfare tax dollars. If you or the toothless hilljack teenage babe they knocked up want to send them perfumed Valentine's Day cards, fire up.

        What?

      • Posted By: didmytime @ 02/23/2008 1:07:36 AM

Where do you get off calling our military drop out losers? For the last twenty years the military wouldn't take drop-outs. In fact most of the folks I served with had at least an associates degree or better. I personally have over 400 semester hours. So am I also a drop out loser? Pull your head out and smell what you are shovelling.

It's laughable that some tool bag can sit here and bash Marines when his great contribution to this nation is a blog comment. Way to be Blue American, how bout you quit playin' with your pudd and do something worth while. And get your facts straight moron, over 50% of Marine reserve units are comprised of college students... so much for "high school dropout loser jarheads" . I don't even know you but i can guarantee you would not say any of this to a Marine in person.... Just keep posting your inaccurate diarrhea

The Berkeley City councils anti-US Military agenda is nothing more than the continuing liberal Democratic Party's "loathing" (Bill Clintons words when he ran off to Oxford, England to avoid the draft) for our military that's been going on since these guys spat on our returning Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines when they were returning from the Viet Nam War. While they're now much older now, they have gained power on the city councils of America, in academia, and in the Democratic Party--controlled Main Stream Media and have indoctrinated our young impressionable teens with their anti- America and anti-US Military hatred. While they will never admit it and bluster about really being American patriots when someone mentions the obvious, they'll do exactly what the Berkeley and San Francisco City Council do to our military that they distain and hate with a passion every time.

Since when did public concensus direct American policies? Do we elect presidential candidates based on a popular vote? Governments do not act in the interests of popular concensus. As for soldiers, let's not be so naive. Our soldiers are not philosophers, or agents following some profound moral code. They are political tools. They do not question their leaders, they follow orders - obediently. Please don't rave about the horros visisted on the world by Muslim extremists while our government supports dictators in other parts of the world, South America for example. That said, it was the American government who originally armed those militant groups, when it suited our political agenda - you tool.

If the majority of the public was against the war, you would have caused a policy change by now. What you are is a vocal monority, that just makes noise. I have served this country for over 26 years, what have you done for your fellow American or done to protect the American liberities?
Having been to Cambodia, Lao, Malaisa, Singapore, Thailand, and will be in Vietnam this summer. I have seen how the average person lives under communist rule and how they can live under more democratic systems. Your like minded buddies, cut and ran during the 70's, and the people of Asia are still suffering the consequences.
Now 40 years later you want to turn your back while the Muslim extremist force their beliefs through out the middle east, North Africa, and Europe. Do you forget 911 and just how long do you think it will be before IED's start showing up in the US? How do you think you would fit into their society ? They have the same solution for infidels as the former Soviet Union did for all US Marine prisoners of war, they kill them.

I served for over 26 years to help preserve the freedom of choice for the American people. Give the people of Berkely what they want, freedom of having to deal with the common American. Then exercise your freedom, Boycot the Berkely government and local businesses, void any federal contracts, stop all tourism, and refuse to employ anybody living there. Hit them in the only thing that they hold near and dear, their pocketbook.

Employ your freedom of choice, 'Boycot the Berkely area,' refuse to do business with their local companies, void all federal contracts, stop any tourism, and do not employ anyone that lives in the area. Hit them in the only thing that they care about or understand, their pocket book.

So Tom Hayden says the targets of the Marine recruiters are too young and impressionable to be subjected to the pressures of military recruitment. Those recruits are older and more mature than he and his ilk were when they were demanding the nation change back in the 60s. Would you finally admit the folly of your youthful destruction of America???s moral compass Tom?

Tom Hayden - who? Friend of Jane Fonda? Pretty irrelevant - Newseek trying to relive the 60's? Like when they perhaps had a voice. Berkely? also irrelevant to today except for the scourge of drug use on our society. I keep hoping to wake up one morning to hear tha CA felll into the ocean. Maybe tomorrow.

I was in the Navy for 10 years, during the Viet Nam war. I saw demonstrations such as this and heard the demonstrators referred to as "dirty, peaceniks, grubbies, and a few non mentionables". I see the same comments again. Take it from someone who saw it...the demonstrators were, for the MOST PART RIGHT. I respect and love my country but I am sick to see our good people continue to die for politics sake.

  • Posted By: wampam48 @ 02/20/2008 9:11:40 PM

These Berkley peaceniks are truely ignorant--brainwashed absolutely. DO you blame the hammer or the person welding the hammer? They have blind rage without understanding the causes and the effects. Have they sat down and talked with the soldiers to find out what they did or think or just accused them of crimes? I'll bet there are robberies and murders going on in Berkley as I write this. Are all people from Berkley then criminals? People of Berkley use what God gave you... engage your brain and listen to all sides to determine the truth. You might actually learn something.

Idiots. The whole reason Code Pink gets to protest is because of our military. They are so wrapped up in their small mindedness they don't seem to realize its the Military that protects this right. I wish we could annex Berekly from the US and watch their sorry asses beg for military support when sleeper cells take hold. Better yet, drop all of the city council members in Iraq. I'm sure if they explain that they are liberals and they oppose the war they'll be fine, welcomed. Yeah right.

    • Posted By: blitz86 @ 02/20/2008 2:15:11 PM

Oh yes these code pink protesters are small minded. They dont reliaze that it is open season on Americans in various parts of the world. I went to a Cindy Sheenhan protest in Crawford TX to see axactly who was doing all the protesting. What I saw was a bunch of nasty longhaired hippie wannabes. Probably unemployed losers collecting welfare just looking for a cause. What a crock of ***. Somebody please tell me that all of Berkly isnt like that.

Liberals throughout American History have been on the shy side risking their life to ensure the freedom's they so famously enjoy in America. I am not saying that no liberal has ever served their country but let's be honest, we all know it is rare that they do and that many liberals think people that do serve in the military are stupid and/or poor exploited minorities. Also, you might want to watch the movie "The Patriot" again. The liberals were even present then verbally promoting their cowardly agenda of shivering, frightened appeasement to the brave people who eventually fought and died. Of course today, in the seemingly safe daylight of freedom, these cowards and innocent idealists come crawling out of the cracks to voice their rights which were bought and paid for by the ideals, commitment, dedication and blood of people like those in the United States Marine Corps.

    • Posted By: jc007 @ 02/13/2008 6:35:04 PM

History is telling if you read it. This country was founded by liberals. The idealogy of Liberalism is built into our Constitution. The right to free speech, free press, free assembly, and bear arms. Our founders weren't cowards. They took arms against their oppressors. I know many liberals who serve and many more who stood up against evil - MLK, Roosevelt, Lincoln. And its ironic that you throw out reactionary statements that simply assume liberals are weak, when it is the idea and action of liberalism that we all benefit from. Investigate the facts first - there is a disproportionate number of poor and minorities in our present-day arrmed forces, especially the USMC. There is also a high number of suicides of troops coming home who are suffering from lack of our government assisting them. And who are the folks helping these returning troops the most - religious and non-profit liberal groups, based on liberal ideas.

      • Posted By: johndoe10 @ 02/19/2008 8:33:03 PM

The ideology of FREEDOM is built into our Constitution, not the ideology of the Liberals we see today. No one calling themselves a Liberal today is even close to the ideas of the Founding Fathers: not surprising, since several hundred years have gone by. Political Liberals today want a huge government that oversees our everyday lives: economic, social, etc. Not exactly my idea of freedom: sounds a bit like the "oppressors" you mentioned. And by the way, jc007, when you talk about investigating facts, you may want to follow your own advice: Lincoln was a Republican.

      • Posted By: AmericanSoldier @ 02/14/2008 6:57:57 AM

Hey partner, before you talk about numbers of poor and minorities in the military, keep in mind one thing- we are an all-volunteer force. What you need to ask yourself is why they are there. Some of us are here to serve our country, maybe some are here for college money, does it matter? The beneifts the military offers can be very enticing. What about the company you work for? How many of the companies that many of the well paid folks who cripe and complain about military recruiters go directly into the places these folks live and look for employees? Maybe some of these "poor and minorities" want to work in a place where everyone starts off on equal footing. Sure, you can get killed in combat. You can get killed in a mall. Hit by a bus. Whatever. I can agree with many of your statements, in fact the military celebrates many of the people who did what they did to make this country great. I would suggest you do check the facts- and then drill down to what jobs they do, the ranks they have, maybe even talk to one or two of them. Let me tell you something. I do not mind the protesting. It's right I have sworn to protect, and will continue to do so. I do have a problem with people complaining about a recruiting station and getting in the way of some Joe trying to do thier job. You want to protest? Go to the offices of your Senator or Congressmen. Wait for the President to visit your town. YOU voted for them, people. I work for you. You don't want me in Iraq, fine. The place sucks anyway. As an American, you enjoy a military that takes command from it's civilian leadership, elected by the people. I don't care who the civilian in charge is. And that is the key thing. Who keeps sending me back to Iraq? YOU do. By voting for the "wrong" person, or not voting at all. This garbage about protesting the Recruiters and the place they work just hurts the anti-war effort. And you send a mixed message. If you support me, why do you interfere with my daily duties? I do not control the policies set by my civilian leadership. I just carry them out. Sorry for the rant, folks.

    • Posted By: pnfpnf @ 02/13/2008 7:59:05 PM

Having seen antiwar and civil rights protestors nonviolently risk their lives at many demonstrations against war and for human rights over the years, I find it simply dumb to call "liberals" "on the shy side risking their life [sic]". And persons whose idea of the U.S. Revolution's history comes from Gibson's film "The Patriot"--and presumably their ideas of Jews and/or Jesus from Gibson's film fantasy of the Crucifixion--probably needs more study to ensure accurate commentary on actual events.

  • Posted By: marine74 @ 02/19/2008 6:18:31 PM

It sounds like the city of Berkeley only changed their minds (publicly) when some of the senators decided to withdraw federall funding to the city. Sounds like the city still needs to loose the funding. They are hypacrites.

  • Posted By: citizenjoe @ 02/19/2008 5:39:44 PM

The problem with this event illustrates a failure of the education system. The artis liberalis principles designed to guide the opening of the mind at our universities seem to have affectively closed them. Anti-establishmentism is not to be confused with open mindedness. Rather, it's just reactionary, closed mindedness on the other side from the establishment. What have these students studied about this war and its historical and contemporary causes? What occurred in the administrations prior to Pres. Bush (even prior to their births) to place our country in such a position? Do they know these answers or are they just venting youthful angst at a popular target? If they're protesting war in general, then allow me to join in. I hate war and I've fought on the front lines of this one for 5 years. I hate war because I have seen and felt its destruction. I hate war because I know war and the sacrifices required to wage war. What do the people of Berkeley know of either war or sacrifice?

Who the hell does Miriam Tidwell think she is. I'm a Col, Ga native and we have problems of our own here without her going across country to interfere with other communities. Not only I'm a Col,Ga native im also a ex-marine and if those people dont want the Corp recuiting in their community it's their right. Nuff said.

    • Posted By: BucFan410 @ 02/15/2008 12:59:48 PM

For a Col,Ga native (your writing), your loyalty to the Corps and this country is questionable and you should be tried for treason. You should be reduced to PVT and put out with no record and/or benefits. You disgust me! Go back to college and learn to write a better, thought out, mind provoking comment. (Maybe Berkley will let you apply.) PS. I am a SFC in the U.S. Army. I have more intelligence than you than to release such a terrible rhetoric.

      • Posted By: gun21 @ 02/19/2008 1:02:52 PM

Never question my loyalty........what someone should have been doing is questioning YOUR commander in chief. Have a good day dogface.

I was walking from the parking garage near the Pentagon last week when a group of seemingly college aged kids started yelling out of their car window.."Baby Killer" to me. I simply explained to them that I indeed had to kill the children otherwise they wouldn't taste as well due to the meat becoming poisoned with all the high levels of andreneline caused by fear and screaming. This totally left them with no response and a look of fear and shock on their faces. They just drove off with nothing more to say :)

As a retired military member who has served in Vietnam with service in both enlisted ranks and as a commissioned officer, I wholehearted support any city for endorsing an anti-war philosophy. Many folks seem to forget the oath of office when they enter the military; "to support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic." In the final analysis, it is not what we want personally, but what the constitution requires that is the true answer to the question. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the reasons set forth by our founding fathers as the reasons for dedicating the foundation of the country on a constitution through a government that "derives it's power from the governed." To forget that, in favor of a personal prejudice is criminal.. It was reported that interviews revealed a majority of the Berkley pro-military protesters were not from Berkeley. Outsiders had no business attempting to intervene in the activities of a duly elected council. Berkley's elected government has every right to supress the activities of the agents of the government to mislead the youngsters of the community into a needless war of choice by a miscreant president. The only victor in war is death! In the case of Iraq, the victims of the "victor" are are children. I. To the pro-military protesters who are veterans, I encourage them to remember the words of their oath of office, to the other protesters, I say turn off your radio, and think ! It is not about what we want personally, but about what rights we are guaranteed by our constitution.

Comment to mirmir: Sorry about the mistake. Columbus, not Columbia. Got it. I've visited several states in the south, but Georgia hasn't been one of them. I wasn't wearing my glasses when I read the article, so please forgive me for my faux pas.
Now, I'm not putting you down, but I think you misunderstand my post. Good for you for exercising your right to free speech by flying to the Bay Area. My point really was, Berkeley is Berkeley. Maybe you have to live there for some time to understand it. Protests and odd city policies are what make the People's Republic of Berkeley just that. As much as I would like to see some (or maybe most) of their views on life spread to the rest of the country, that will never happen. All this city says and does seems so futile in a time when Bush's philosophy is "you're either with us or against us".
Berkeley seems to be the last place (or the most vocal place) that defies this attitude that has perverted our country. But...well, its voice, no matter how crazy it is at times, is a grain of sand on a beach of rock that is constantly being pounded by a vast ocean. Unfortunately, you have nothing to fear.
I'm glad you think that the other side has a right to speak out as well. If you ever lived there....you'd understand. It's a grimy city, but it feels so...clean. Most people help their neighbors and try to live good eco-friendly lives. Anyhow, if you paid attention to where you were, you'd understand the "Go Bears!"
C'est la vie. Roll on you Bears!

No problem, and as I was reading your comment I was remembering my day in Berkeley. first I had a great pizza, then as my new friend John and I got to the site or steps and I saw all these kids in the same black t shirt and orange cloth around their faces, in Georgia we call those gang cloths and kids aren???t allowed to have them anyway this is the really great part ,I watched this girl look at her watch, this girl said ok we are up, then 4 girls and I bet they were 12 to 15years old, so hard to tell these days, yet they were walking to the front where the pro-marines were standing and they started yelling MAKE OUT NOT WAR??? MAKE OUT NOT WAR?????? MAKE OUT NOT WAR?????? MAKE OUT NOT WAR anyway they started kissing each other on the mouth, it was shocking in a funny way, it was so funny because they didn???t really look like they were use to kissing yet they were doing their part to stop the big bad marines, and by God they were stopping them , everywhere the men were stopped and looking . well you never know what one person or 4 hot little girls making out, anyway it is why America is so great, we can.
      ???

Back in the early 1990's my husband was stationed in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the Marine Corps. While we were there we met a lot of wonderful people and still regard them as friends. My comment isn't against all people from California just the ignorant ones. I know exactly how the Marines and their family's feel about the protesters, one day while my husband and I were walking down a street in San Francisco, some hateful person spit on me and called my husband "baby killer" right in front of our four small children. The thing that is most upsetting about all this garbage going on in Berkley is nothing has changed in over 50 years there and without the military protecting and defending our rights and freedoms, you wouldn't be protesting, your freedom of speech would have been taken away, your right to a lawful assembly would not be allowed, and our nation would be run by some dictator or worse. Everyone has the right to their feelings, but don't cut off your nose despite your face. Also, get your facts straight and research all sides of the story, not just one. Knowledge is power. I stand behind the military 100%, our government on the other hand is questionable and that is my right as an American citizen. If the government officials of Berkley force the military out of their town, then the Government (State and Federal) should take away any and all Federal and State funding from them. I sure don't want any of my hard earned monies going to a place like that. Grow up people and get real, terrorism is real and without our military we would be in the same boat as the muslim nations......I'm a proud Marine Corps Wife and the Mother of an Active Duty Army MP.
