how can america ever win a war when after a year or so of its commencement, people start clamoring for the troops to return? what kind of war ends in a year?

"What kind of war ends in a year?" One that only happened due to Dubya's inadequacy issues.

I am a disabled Gulf War vet and I want our troops out of Iraq as much or more than anyone else. My brother in law is a Marine medic serving in Iraq. His wife is due to have their first child any week now. If there was a protest anywhere near by that would serve to signal the President and the Congress to end the War in Iraq and bring our troops home I'd be there in a heartbeat.

What is wrong with the Berkeley City Council decision to say ""If recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders," along with those who protest infront of the Marine recuitment center is that while they maybe protesting the war, they are turning their feelings, their anger and their frustrations on to the wrong people.

Harrasing, impeding and verbaling attacking soldiers, even recruiters is wrong. What's next, are you going to start spitting on them and calling them 'baby-killers'? Attempting to villianize the lower ranking men and women who serve won't end the war and I don't think it will be tolerated by those men and women either.

If the Berkely City Council really wants to get their message across perhaps they should with hold any tax money they are supposed to send to the feds in protest. And those who oppose the war need to march and passively resist the war effort. Not to mention supporting a candidate who will end the war and bring our troops home, not a presidential candidate who will give us more of the same.

Maybe the Gov. of Calif. should tell the council members THEY are welcomed to leave the state & if they choose to stay, "they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders," since this behavior is in fact un-American.

Your brother-in-law (like my son) has volunteered to serve our country. Anyone who does NOT want to serve is welcomed to leave! Sorry he won't be home for the birth of his child, but that possibility comes with the job.

When my first son was born in 1979 we were counting the days of the continued hostage situation & I expected my husband to deploy at any minute... though it didn???t happen till several years later. MOST vets from that time frame tell this generation they only wish we had done more to truly 'fix' the situation back then. The 'Gulf War' was quick & decisive, but within the bigger picture, also too little, too late.

You fools claim to ???support the troops but not the war??? but these kind of stunts only serve to encourage our enemies to ???stay the course??????since it makes it look like America does not have the gumption to do so???and thus you actively endanger our men & their mission!

If you don???t like/support the war, simply stay away from the recruiters???Uncle Sam does NOT want YOU anyhow???let the rest who choose to serve do their duty! And be thankful there are still good men & women in this country making that choice.

My opinion is STILL the same, in the face of their so-called "changed opinion" letter...REVOLK their citizenship, deport them to another country such as Iran, iraq, Cuba, and THEN see what their opinion is abour our OUTSTANDING military troops, i.e. Marines Army Air Force Nave Nat. Guard...see how they feel about them THEN! And I DO support cutting off all federal and state monies to them!

My keyboard and I do not have skill enough to explain the debths of distain and dislike I have for the citizens of Berkeley. While I know they have a right to their opinions and feelings, I wonder if there is anything, including their own opinions or family for which they would be willing for fight or die. A smart man once said something to the effect - "I pity the man, who holds nothing so dear that he would be willing to die in its defence." So along with my distain these wretched souls have earned my pity.

If they want to protest the US Marine Corp I think they should first go live in another country for 1 year. If & when these unfortunate, and pathetic people return than maybe they will respect their neighbors & fellow countrymen who have given their lives, and the proud ones who still do.

thes antiwar people are crying the blues. if someone attack them or shoot at them then they would be demanding protection. if they were attacked by terrorists, them they be demanding where was the military and why did they let this happen. take all these antiwar and drop them off to face these people and show us how it's done.

so tired of these people who think they control world events when all they really are doing is burying their heads in the sand. unfortunately at the same time they dishonor our troops and our nation with some hoary bygone vestige of 60's activism. they dont realize that there are groups out there that would like to do the burying in sand for them. It simply displays the cowardice and lack of honor that exists in the liberal wing of politics. principles do not extend to survival of the nation only to their own selfish wants and desires.

Dont dishonor our troops as they make the ultimate sacrifice. dont dishonor our great nation. 60's activism served only to weaken the nation as evidenced by the malaise of the 70's. thank god for Reagan who restored our honor and place in the world.

maybe berkely should just secede and go away then they can all protest to themselves and be activists on each other. the silent majority in this country does not agree with them or their methods.

God bless and protect America and our troops, may your providence reign supreme, always watching over our great nation and people.

The true "ripple effect" seems to be being ignored by the media but is going around via e-mail & confirmed by TruthOrFiction<dot>com: [search for "Berkeley" & you'll find a copy of the full e-mail being circulated]

"The letter from businessman Brian Dennard of Meridian Development Group is authentic. In it he chastises the Berkeley City Council for its decision and declares that his company is no longer going to do business with anyone in Berkeley. Dennard said he never intended for the letter to become so widely distributed. He had sent it to a few of his contacts and it got circulated from person to person and mushroomed. He said that he spends much of his day answering phone calls and emails asking if he really wrote the letter and that the response has been overwhelmingly positive."

    And

"In response in February, 2008, legislation was introduced in both houses of congress called the Semper Fi Act of 2008 that would rescind more than $2 million in federal funds for Berkeley."

Hope your Jane Fonda/Tom Hayden types have your wallets opened & not just your big stupid mouths... Make up for the lost Fed $ & Lots of jobs to offer the poor, ignorant people of Berkeley as this REAL ripple effect
kicks in? Fat chance... they just suck up the spotlight & enjoy creating black holes of chaos.

It is our military that make me proud to be an American; the Jane Fonda/Tom Hayden types are an extreme embarrassment! I for one, support our troops AND the war effort they are involved in!

if this war were so "illegal" then why the hell doesnt the democrat controlled congress stop it? i cant make sense of the word illegal here. illegal in which way? international law? and what exactly is that? a liberal doctrine that says all wars are illegal? war was declared by a democratically elected president and a democratically elected congress, and in spite of what is regularly projected i refuse to believe that white house advisers, CIA heads and congressmen are all so collectively stupid as to vote in favor of a war that was "illegal immoral stupid criminal murderous and wasteful". give them some credit. they probably have access to information that is not released to the public. maybe it was just the oil. whatever it was, they did it so america would become stronger. for us. how can any rational person accuse the entire governemtn and military as being unpatriotic? there arent any supreme court judgements saying it is "illegal". just because liberals lost the white house and the congress doesnt mean that whatever decision they take is "illegal".

And for those who want the soldiers to disobey orders: if you refuse to do what your boss wants you to do, you get fired.
And since when do protesters get parking?

this country was not founded by "Liberals". Libertarian would be accurate. and guess which party a large chunk of modern libertarians support? hint - its the party of Ron paul (im not a paul supporter - im conservative but im swept up in the obama magic this time). and lincoln was from the GOP.

Let Berkley close the recruiting centers. Then take Berkley's federal funding and use it to increase the vets benefits and medical/psychological programs.

oh god. please ask the cia to defend only suburbs against osama, because im sure they "personally" feel cities are havens for illegals and criminals. this person wants soldiers to disobey their commanders in a war??? what if someone invades us? will she accept it if soldiers say "hey im of thefeeling that defending the homeland is illegal, i think im gonna sit this out"? will she "support the troops, not the war"? why isnt there more critical coverage of berkeley? stop treating them like legitimate citizens. just because they are a city doesnt make it right or legal. i could create a city populated solely by ex convicts, make the city council pass resolutions on daily basis making rape, murder and armed robbery legal.

Berkeley has always felt they had the rights to say and do as they please, But they should have to do it on their own dime. I believe every cent of state and federal money should be withheld, any money earmarked for any business operating in or headquartered in Berkeley should be banned from Federal or State contract work. Let them do as they like, but not on my dime.

Liberals throughout American History have been on the shy side risking their life to ensure the freedom's they so famously enjoy in America. I am not saying that no liberal has ever served their country but let's be honest, we all know it is rare that they do and many liberals think people that do serve in the military are stupid and/or poor exploited minorities. Don't believe me? Research anti-war protests after Pearl Harbor and 9-11 --those appeasers and cowards were liberals not conservatives.

    • Posted By: mdrw @ 02/13/2008 9:48:49 PM

I don't need to do much research to see that the liberal anti-war protesters were wrong after Pearl Harbor. Where would the world be today? Some things are worth fighting for. For example, the right of the Marines to recruit when and wherever they wish to.

A few years ago, while simultaneously attending Chabot College (in Hayward) and Las Positas College (in Livermore), I noticed the high frequency of military recruitment on the Chabot Campus while the frequency of recruitment was almost non-existent. It seems to me that the recruiters were spending more time at Chabot because Hayward has a much poorer demographic than does Livermore. To me, the recruiters seemed like pied pipers trying to capitolize on the less than fourtunate socio-economic backround of the citizens of Hayward.

Seems like the less "fortunate" who went in the military may have learned how to spell there. They were trying to "capitalize" on their opportunity. Proof again that college will not always lead to knowledge.

Please give me a break. I joined the military in part so that I could attend college. While in the military I had any number of friends who had Master's degrees and 4-year degrees. People in the military represent all walks of life. They deserve our support and respect, rather than harrassment and degrading comments under the banner of free speech.
