How is it that no one seems to be addressing the fact that Obama as president is a liability to this country. Osama Bin Laden can be expected to jump on this if he is elected. If Al-Queda is as you say smarter than ever... it may be that they are just hoping Obama wins... Giving them the edge, and using America's inability to address the facts that we don't want to see as another of his best allies.
As for Obama, it's not a point of "loving him", "Believeing in his vision of hope", "being the first Black president"... or "hating him" etc.
Rather he was a practicing Muslim as a child, and now claiming to be christian. This in itself, by Islamic law, condemns him to death. We in America, and most likely Muslims here and everywhere would not approve of this "law". It is in fact archaic. However we all know that radical Islamic Fundamentalists will grab hold of anything they can to attack the US.
How can Obama expect to be able to negotiate with Islamic Leaders who must return to their countries and face these radicals. Consider that they "by law" are not even allowed to speak to him. Rather they should be attacking him and condemning him as well.
So if you like him or hate him isn't the point... He IS a liability He IS condemned by Islamic Law. The only solution is that he return to islam, or is it that he admit to being Muslim. This brings up another question... is he a liability or is he lying and intends to come out of the Islamic closet... AFTER the election.
Either way do you want him as president under these conditions...

You are wrong.it is a gross misinterpretation of Islam that it is the duty of Mulims to kill those who are no longer muslim. That is a archaic custom. Islamic law is rooted in the Quran. There is not a sigle verse in the Quran that tells muslims to kill apostates, rather it is said that God will judge them. The media act aws though they are experts on Islam, but are only repeating what someone has told them.

The problem here is that the majority of American people are blind to what's really going on in the Arab world. I completely disagree with the way Bin Laden is handling this issue, however, I understand why he feels the way he feels. We put Saddam in charge, propped him up to deal with Iran and gave him the chemical weapons he used to gas the Kurds. We propped up the Taliban in Afghanistan, hell, we even supplied Bin Laden with weapons and trainging to fight against the soviet invasion in the late 70's. We basically do as we please. We've toppled Saddam, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian lives(according to some estimates). Is there anyone reading this article that can honestly say that if a foreign country invaded us and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, we would sit back and hope that the government they installed worked out? No, we'd form militias and there would be an extremely ugly insurgency. The funny thing is, we'd be called "terrorists" in that countrys media. It's propaganda. We should hunt Bin Laden at all costs. If Pakistan doesn't produce him, we invade, just like we did in Afghanistan. The American people would support that. We didn't support Iraq because we all knew that it had nothing to do with 9/11. We don't support Iran because it has nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden. Get a clue! Do the right thing, people will support you, lie your way into a war that satisfies some obscure strategic objective and people will see right through your BS.

I totally agree, except on one point...There is one man who has spoken about blowback and the after affect our foreign policy has had. That man is Ron Paul. He was laughed at during the debates when he spoke the truth, he has been marginalized by the media. I call on all Americans to seek the truth of the matter and vote for the one man who understands what we are doing and how it is hurting us. And yes...he is still running.

radicalrealist - militant Imad Mughniyeh is another example of "taken out our man", that???s the second militant high grade terrorist in less then a week. You can't blame the Israelis? CIA possibly involved! Sooner or later the truth will prevail. Bin Landen is just one the list, and we know he is not that important as the media makes him out to be, the military knows that, but he is on the list. Yes they will be many that will try to fit in his shoes, but their can only be one Hitler, one Castro, one Stalin, one Bin Landen. I know clearly where I stand, do you? One by one, with patience all will fall. That???s not biased, that???s perseverance at all cost. War is not pretty! It is well that war is so terrible - otherwise we would grow too fond of it.

"AT ALL COST' INCLUDING BANKRUPTING OUR OWN COUNTRY AS WE BANRUPTED RUSSIA THE SAME WAY? "GROW TO FOND OF IT" I GUESS THIS EXPLAINS IRAQ. WHERE BIN-LAUDEN AIN'T, OR EVER WAS. IRAQ, THE WAR STARTED TO AVOID CIVIL CHARGES OF BEING CAUGHT WITH HIS HAND IN THE ENRON COOKIE JAR? IRAQ THE EASY TARGET ON THE WAR BOARD PRIOR TO 9/11? WE ARE PROVING WE ARE FOND OF WAR, NO MATTER THE COST. SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS. WE USED TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE, WE WOULD NEVER ALLOW ANY RULES OR REGS PUT ON US BY ANOTHER COUNTRY UNDER THREAT, OR WE OURSELVES WOULD BECOME TERRORIST, OR FREEDOM FIGHTERS, DEPENDS ON WHICH SIDE OF THE FENCE YOU ARE ON. WE HAVE A CRIMINAL IN N.J., WE NEED TO INVADE IRAN? WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER, PRAY I'M WRONG!

You want to blame the Jews and our relationships with them, they have being our only allies, they have gone trough more persecution and terrorist acts that anyone else, we are so easily to forget history. They are surrounded by countries that their only which is to exterminate them just as the Nazis tried. We want everyone to get a long, but sometimes you have to take a side. That???s what the rest of the world doesn???t do, they just sit back and watch.

    • Posted By: garysgary @ 02/14/2008 2:41:59 PM

I did not mention Jews in my comment. I said Isreal. Isreal is a country. Jews are a race of people. Two different things. The reason "Isreal" is surrounded by countries that want to destroy them is because they built their nation on top of Palestine and the Palistinians were displaced. Isreal took someone else's land. That is a fact. Have you ever asked yourself why there are Palistinian refugees in their own country? How would you like to be a refugee in your own country? It was wrong for Briton to allow the creation of the State of Isreal and it wrong for the U.S. to continue to support that wrong.

ISRAEL IS MORE SADISTIC THAN THERE ENEMIES! 1 BOMBER KILLS 5 WOUNDS 12, ISRAEL SENDS 4 APACHE HELIOS AND 10-15 SIDEWINDERS LATER, FLATTENING AN ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD IN GAZA, IS NOT RETAILATION, ITS GENOCIDE! ISRAEL SELLS CHINA WEAPONS AGAINST THE ARMS BANN, AND NOT ONE WORD IS SAID? IRAN WANTS WIND TECH, AND ALL HELLO DOLLY ERUPTS? GET EVEN, GET EQUAL, AND THEN TALK ABOUT ISRAEL! THE STRONGEST NUCLEAR COUNTRY IN THE MIDDLE-EAST, AND WE BLEED FOR THEM, BEFORE THEY DO-NOT!!!

falcon your a uneducated putz! No muslim will make the WH. We have an old Christian, a woman Christian, and a American-African Christian, and you the raciest/moron UnChristian like person! No Muslim is even in the race, so look in the mirror the next time you start speaking out the wrong end and use the word uneducated as you must sorly be a by-product of our broken school system! We made a problem and we can't handle it cause we outsoursed it and lost track and for the US it was easy! Pakistan is unstable and nuclear, we need to invade Iran mentality! Your a sore and poor example of the American people!

    • Posted By: Naver @ 02/14/2008 10:29:08 AM

Um pink you should probably read first. He said Obama was raised a Muslim....and he was, and converted. What Falcon is saying is that the Islamic extremists will use that as a rallying point to villify the U.S. even more. Thats all.

      • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 02/14/2008 2:06:33 PM

The last thing we would want is a country sympathetic to the US being ravaged with cilvil war because we put a "fallen" Muslim in the presidency

THIS IS THE SENTENCE I HAD A PROBLEM WITH. OBAMA=CIVIL WAR?

Bravo Michael Scheuer! Honest and informed opinion of a subject that won't be relevant again till the next 9/11. They may live in the sand but Americans have their heads buried in the sand living in constant denial of what is really the cause of our current situation. And thanks to the Iraqi war, many new recruits are lining to join Osama.

Sorry radicaltwist but your stance is obviously biased. Thank you for serving our country but if you think "getting our man" Osama will stop this you are gravely mistaken. Remove one and ten are waiting to take their place. Foreign policy change would be the most effective method for changing our current situation, not military might.

We had a family friend named John P. O'Neill. Google his name. He was hunting Bin Laden for the FBI. John was eventually killed on 9/11. His is a story every American should know. His story was on PBS....called "The Man who Knew". It shows what our govt. knew, and chose to ignore, about Bin Laden...and the lives lost because of that.

  • Posted By: startMakingSense @ 02/14/2008 1:19:07 PM

So, all we have to do is end our presence in all Islamic countries (which ones are these?; End all relations with Russia, China and India; Pay $300 per barrel for oil; And end our support for Arab tyrannies (again, which ones?). Does the list of Islamic countries include Spain? And, what will they want after we capitulate on all these points? Anyway, I heard bin laden urging Americans to convert to Islam? Guess you missed that one. One point is correct; they are not stupid. But you neglect to point out that they are evil. There is no other word. And they do believe that it is their duty to convert the entire world to Islam at the point of a sword, not just "Islamic" countries. And, they certainly do believe in murdering anyone who does or says anything they find offensive, wherever they are. Sorry to disagree, changing our foreign policy will only embolden them and make them stronger. There is no good answer, but opposing them at every step is the best option in my opinion.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 02/14/2008 1:46:48 PM

IT'S OUR DUTY TO DESTROY THE WAY THEY PRACTICE, AT THE POINT OF A NUCLEAR TIPPED SWORD-RIGHT? THIS WE DO BELIEVE! YOU CAN PRAY TO WHO EVER YOU PLEASE BUT BY OUR STANDARDS ONLY, OR DIE!

Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency program to arm the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, 1979 to 1989. The Program relied heavily on using the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as an intermediary for funds distribution. Along with funding from similar programs from Britain's MI6 and SAS, Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of China, the ISI armed and trained over 100,000 insurgents between 1978 and 1992. Somewhere between $3???$20 billion in US funds were funneled into the country to train and equip troops with weapons, including Stinger man-portable air-defense systems.
26 Aug 1988 SA-7On July 3, 1979, U.S. President Carter signed a presidential finding authorizing funding for anticommunist guerrillas in Afghanistan.[1] Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and installation of a more pro-Soviet president, Babrak Karmal, Carter announced "The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is the greatest threat to peace since the Second World War".[2] American funding started with 20-30 million dollars per year in 1980 and rose to $630 million a year in 1987.[3]
The US government has been criticized for allowing Pakistan to channel a disproportionate amount of its funding to controversial Afghan resistance leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar,[4] who Pakistani officials believed was "their man".[5] Hekmatyar has been criticized for killing other mujahideen and attacking civilian populations, including shelling Kabul with American-supplied weapons, causing 2,000 casualties. Hekmatyar was said to be friendly with Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda, who was running an operation for assisting "Afghan Arab" volunteers fighting in Afghanistan, called Maktab al-Khadamat (MAK). Alarmed by his behavior Pakistan leader General Zia warned Hekmatyar that "It was Pakistan that made him an Afghan leader and it is Pakistan who can equally destroy him if he continues to misbehave".[6] According to a Newsweek article, in the late 1980s, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, concerned of the growing strength of the Islamist movement, told President George H. W. Bush, "You are creating a Frankenstein". Author Gilles Kepel reports that American funding of Hekmatyar and his Hezbi Islami party was cut off immediately following the withdrawal of the Soviets.[7]
The U.S. says all of its funds went to native Afghan rebels and denies that any of its funds were used to supply Osama bin Laden or foreign Arab mujahideen. It is estimated that 35,000 foreign Muslims from 43 Islamic countries participated in the war! BIN-LAUDEN GOT HIS WEAPONS AND MONEY BY THE MILLIONS!
THE AUTHOR WAS NOT THE ONLY AMERICAN IN THIS OPERATION. AS I WAS ALSO. AND THE FACT IS HE IS RIGHT!

Pink panther I think you may be full of it, I do not believe you were a CIA operative. I point to your assertion that on July 3,1979 Pres. Carter signed an authorization to fund anti communist Afghans to fight the Soviets. Well the Soviets invaded in Afghanistan on Christmas 1979 some six months after you state Carter authorized funding for the rebels. Carter was a wimp he never would have done so prior to the Soviet invasion.

"The candidates in the presidential campaign are talking about reviving jobs and wages and moving toward universal health care. None of that is going to be possible if this country is involved in some generation-long struggle with millions of Muslims. "

Reviving jobs and providing universal health care deminishes a struggle against Al Qaeda ??? A dispirited lower-middle class will surely detract from any efforts in a long struggle.

To "horizon07" if we weren't who we are we would probably have a military base from Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and every other country. This country still has the opportunity for the American Dream why do you think everyone around the world is dying to have a piece of it, you don't see us trying to escape to Saudi Arabia. I agree on many levels that sometimes we shouldn't get involved, but for better or worse we are the ONLY POLICE OF THIS WORLD AND MAINTAIN SOME SMALL AS IT APEARS CONTROL. Do you expect the United Nations to get anything done? Who if not us? The Russians? China? The damage that Mr. Scheuer department has done, we are cleaning up and I rather clean the mess insides their backyard then here.
