well, lets just send a big o ass ship up to the artic and fill it up with ice and send it to cali. and bottle it up for them. i'm sure theres enough ice up there to last for a long time and maybe by that time, our resevoirs and ground water will be saturated then.

Who wants water from the Great Lakes... that is some pretty contaminated water with all the factories that line it dumping their waste into it. The water from the Colorado River is already stretched thin. The population boom is only going to make it worse. Hmmmm maybe we should finally do something about all the illegal immigration. But hey, natural resources will last forever no matter how fast our country grows, right?

Perhaps when the lake dries, we will be able to see all of the huge fish there are so many legands of!!

Blaming this on those with fat wallets and fancy cars is like looking at the southwest with blinders on. This problem is brought on by everyone in the region. From the wealthy to the poor. There are too many people now and we refuse to wake up to the fact that we need to practice not only stricter conversation efforts, but we need to reign in rampant population growth. I know it's hard to convince people that they need to stop having more than a couple of children, but it's a fact. We need to face it just as we must face climate change. The Earth is a finite system and we are reaching the turning point of sustainability. WAKE UP TO THIS FACT! If we don't control our population growth we will continue on a downward spiral regardless of any other contributing factors. If we could agree to have only two children per family we could at least slow down the growth curve. This would help the environment in innumerable ways. Each new mouth creates a further burden on our dwindling resources, but everyone seems afraid to mention this aspect of the problem. WAKE UP!!!

Here's a start... No WINERY's or irrigated GOLF COURSES in the Southwest?
C'mon people wake up!! Mother nature will prevail even if she has to kill man off to do it. 40 years ago it was the earth is cooling to fast, and now gore is making his retirement off of his "the sky is falling" antics. Throughout the geological time lines the earth has changed her climate on a semi-regular basis. Now add man and his lead foot fossil fuel burning machines and yes the changes are accellerated.
Bottom line is: You moved to a dessert... and now we are gonna complain because there is no water?
    Good luck humans!

Hmm, "pseudo-science"? "Theory"? Seems like a lot of armchair scientists out there. (And sadly still many that really don't get the context of the word "theory" in science.) Yes, climate change is a natural phenomenon. It's always happening. The dilema we have to face is how we as humans, and the bits of life on the planet most actively changing the planet, are acting as the catalyst that increases the speed of climate change faster than life can cope. There are dozens of different indications in every natural system around the planet. If you don't believe it, get off your keisters, dust off an old science text book that gives you an inkling on the scientific method, and do the experiments yourself.

Maybe those who comment and actually knew the truth behind the 'water rights' of the named supply... might actually know and understand something other than gross speculation. (cgrpal, this means you)

I am a resident here in Las Vegas and know of the hype and, not only the 'mis-' but also the 'dis-' information about this subject. Gross misuse and mismanagement of the stated resource is rather prevalent.

California as a whole, obviously, needs to use less... nor do we need to route as much to Mexico as we are currently. Im not saying that Las Vegas and everyone upstream doesnt have their hands in this... as we most certianly do... but given the facts, we are more disaplined in water conservation than the rest by ten fold. Yet, Las Vegas will suffer the most.

Then again... we chose to live here, knowing... what the region will have to Inevitably face.

Global Warming ?? Please. Educate yourselves before you make statements of such. The grandure and dilution of the "Gore" complex is quite laughable. Lemmings will be lemmings. Historically, this planet is at the high time of its cycle. It will then be on its way to its low. I guess it sucks to be a human, in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lastly. Please be a part of evolution... and not that of being a victim in your own environment.

The Great Lakes will disappear also if the entire US and Canada starts sucking it out. Get real bootstrap...that is not the answer.

    • Posted By: Bootstrap Bill @ 02/15/2008 11:34:25 PM

Are you sure the Great Lakes would disappear? They're huge! It would be like emptying an ocean. It's not going to happen in our lifetime.

      • Posted By: yruhere4now @ 02/15/2008 11:54:13 PM

a lifetime is only a blink of an eye. what if no one left any food for you in the cupboards when you were 3 yrs old ? Not too cool and selfish huh ? We have an obligation to look farther than "MY" life.

      • Posted By: fjmicforce @ 02/15/2008 11:42:52 PM

yes!! hte great lake will disappear... look at picture on head.. some water will done.. i dont know what happen about our lifetime..for this time the answer of lifetime "50"`50" because some scientis invent what materials use to quickly on that problem.......

The water levels are already down because we haven't been getting enough precip and our summers have been hotter and drier lately. If they can drain Lake Mead, they can drain the Great Lakes. You're a fool if you think otherwise.

  • Posted By: schvenger @ 02/15/2008 11:52:04 PM

We need to pump water from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to reservoirs in the southwest. There is always an abundance of water in these rivers and they flood almost every year. So why not pump them when they threaten to go over their banks. We can build an oil pipeline through Alaska, then why not a water line to the southwest. Which is more important to our survival; water or oil?

    population growth anybody?

  • Posted By: egbloom @ 02/15/2008 11:51:46 PM

The U.S. government is slowly, but secretly draining the lake in case of a terroristic attack -- catastrophic dam failure, which could severely devastate major populations downstream. Thank you.

dang!!..this sux!!..i have lived in las vegas since 1972 and have been to lake mead hundreds of times..sure would hate to see it go...real bummer!.

I have lived in Las Vegas for 12 years and I love it here, This message is directed to the post from monalisaoverdrive that we have made the changes here in Vegas. You now get paid by the square foot of lawn you remove by the city and 96% of homes in Las Vegas are desert landscaped, we no longer can wash our cars in front of our house, you get fined for going over the limit of gallons of water a month, All new homes are all water smart, 92% of golf courses in Las Vegas and Summerlin are desert landscape. So go ahead and look at your way "The southwestern states want the federal government to step in and MAKE us give them our water. For what? Golf course, swimming pools, and lawns in the d****d desert? You folsk" but we have already took all the necsessary steps to help prevent it CHEESE HEAD

    • Posted By: monalisaoverdrive @ 02/15/2008 11:51:31 PM

I'm glad that you folks are doing something about your water usage. You didn't need to call me a cheesehead--ad hominem attacks weaken your argument. I was right there with you until you flung that at me like so much poo.
You still don't address the fact that the desert southwest is looking to us for your water needs--and the fact remains that you can golf in Vegas.
