farido that is conservation....go to school, get an education
I was in the Las vegas region last October and evan went kayaking through the Black River Canyon below Hoover Dam. I was astounded and alarmed at how much Las Vegas had grown since my previous visit in 1987. More alarming was the amount of ongoing constuction and the " plans " for future growth. I don't recall the exact stats but it is something like every week a thousand new people move into the area. I'm delighted that Tim Barnett is sounding the first wake up call. The powers that in the LV area are either doing the ostrich thing or have a hand way in the till. Lets hope some sanity in curtailing development and growth will come from this !
Obviously, we need more development in the South West. More homes, more people, and, above all, MORE GOLF COURSES!!! Also, we should encourage more developments such as "Lakes on The Desert," near Phoenix, that feature large artificial lakes so that people, who obviously don't like the desert, can pretend that they live in Venice.
Oh, yes!
Raise the price of water so people learn to conserve it. Look at the gas prices. It has made a lot of people make changes to their lifestyles.
Sorry about the last submit, but this comment section is grayed out, making it hard to read. But I will not at all be convinced that there is not something happening with the climate, global warming? yes I believe. I live in the south and for 2 days a record was set in the month of February, one day 78 next 79 and here come the tornadoes, mass destruction. Thank the Lord it passed over me.
Carnabylane, while I'm no republican you can't go blaming the bush administration for this happening the last 20 years, lets be passionate, lets be vocal, but lets make sense too. I'm no desalination (sp?) expert but if the earth is 70% water, why can't we filter it to a usable level (drinking, showing etc...)?
We can have a sense of humor but also be constructive and serious regarding something were so passionate about.
As for the other so far venting messages here, a true environmentalist and global warming believer doesn't just vent their comments on some comments page, they mention to they change things. They change their friends mind; they change their families member mind, then create political petitions and make their voice heard (in a positive way) what's happening. Aside from replacing a few light bulbs and driving an energy efficient car (which isn't as efficient as my gas guzzling motorcycle) and making your opinion known (which is always 100% acceptable) what have you really done to contribute something to the issue?
And with that said I can't say I have done anything other that replace a few light bulbs and get a motorcycle instead of a car, and while I understand scope of the problem, I know for myself that I'll adapt to what changes in my environment... even if it is a hard to impossible life in the southwest.
I live in Las Vegas and the idiots on the county commission that oversee growth have let it go unabated for the last 20 years. Where will they get the power to light up all the new billion dollar resorts that are springing up, not to mention the high rise condos that are the current craze along with the water that the 35 million tourist and 2.5 million residents use. I'm sure Steve Wynn, Sheldon Adelson, Kirk Kerkorian and the rest of the resort owners along with KB Homes, Pardee, Pulte and the other insane developers are working hand in hand with the local politicians to solve this very serious problem at this very moment! Yeah, right.
This is another "the sky is falling" scientist. If it doesn't happen nobody will question him. Just throw something out there and see if I get lucky. We are talking about 11 years from now. Under normal conditions I will live that long, therefore I would like to bet him a lot of money he is wrong. That will never happen.
Raise the price of water so people don't take advantage and waste it.
try stopping the water going out to ca and az to water the grass etc. and see how fast it fills up. you can walk across the colorado river in yuma, because all the water gets deverted. tell the army corp of enginers to slow the output and it will fill. its not climate change its mans miss use.
By 2021 Lake Mead is going to be the least of our worries. You naysayers can dismiss this all you want and I pray that you are correct but all environmental data points to disasters of global proportion. With an out of control population coupled with lack of concern for environmental issues, deforestation, air pollution, etc. we are running out of time. Oh, the planet will recover from this. May take a few thousand years but it will fully revoer. Humanity, on the otherhand, will become the extinct species.
Actually, it makes no sense to take 10 million people who live in an area where water is abundant (Central Mexico) and move them to the Southwestern United States where water has always been in short supply. Hate to sound so political, but illegal immigration causes a lot more problems than just crowded freeways.
You you idiots in the media are going to cost this country billions of dollars in gobal warming prevention over nothing more than a period weather cycle. I guess thats one way to spark the economy.

The Great Lakes have more than enough water for the entire country. Why can't we build a system of aquaducts to spread this water around the nation?
This is why I can't understand why the government allows manufactures to bottle water. It is destroying the Ecosystem. Water can't evaporate if its in bottles or canisters. We have warehouse full of bottled up water. While lakes in Georgia and other States that are drying up.
It is totally ridiculous that this nation does not require gray water usage. Why are people allowed to pull fresh water out of the ground to pour onto their cars, and lawns? Zero scape should be demanded in the Southwest or else they can move to the Midwest. California should be using ocean water to flush their toilets and wash their cars and sidewalks! HOW STUPID can a nation be?

When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the Captain was 100% sure the ship would NOT sink. I'd rather prepare for the worst, and that includes beginning a reduction in future demand. Start educating and rewarding people for birth control, and introduce mandatory water conservation in all municipal wand private water systems. If the experts have erred then we'll have extra water for more crops. Erring the other way is fatal.
