This is so crazy. We are required by law to insure our cars and homes. But it still is a CHOICE. Those who choose not to will financially be devistated. So why not let us choose if WE want health insurance? If we choose not to, we will be financially devistated. BUT is our choice. I thought Hillary and Barack were PRO-CHOICE not PRO-MANDATE.

Both are PRO-CONTROL over your life.

Comment by marketing truth is pretty short-sighted and stupid. When third world countries with universal health care plans can figure out how to cover everyone at little cost and have lower per capita health problems and mortality rates, it just shows how obtuse and pretentious the old right wing has on the American psyche. Even with the current system in place, individuals and families often have to pick and choose partial procedures, prescriptions, doctors or facilities because the insurance industry has a stranglehold on what to cover. Although I purchased insurance thru my employer, since it's too expensive on the outside(no unversal options), I experienced an uphill battle trying to get a large insurance co. to cover necessary chemo-therapy for my spouse, after several specialist indicated she required it for her medical condition; it could've cost her her life. You have a paper-pusher, often times not even a regular medical doctor, for the insurance company determining your treatment, and giving automatic denials for bottom line-profits.
As far as this Andres idiot article on compelling someone to buy something they can't afford, what do you think auto insurance is? That's mandated in all states if you drive a motorized vehicle on any road. And I think that's a tad lower on the totem pole as far as priorities go in comparison with your personal health. You claim no right to "government bureaucracy", yet I guess Americans' then wouldn't have rights to such institutions as post offices, public libraries, and national parks, to name a few.
As it stands, insurance will continue to be a complete racket, and the whole system needs to be overhauled. I only hope you don't have to go thru the same thing when you suffer an emergency or medical condition in which you have to wait for an insurance bean-counter to decide your fate!

Sorry about your wife's situation, but why is it the Federal Govrnment's, (and in the end mine), responsibility to provide you and your family with insurance? Many 'third world countries' are also going to privitized medicine because the service is too slow\poor and they want more options for their money.

Okay, there are 300 million people in the US. About 10 million don't have health insurance (all by law have medical coverage), some \many by choice. So, we are going to tax and alter the way of life for OVER 90% of the country for this very small minority!

I just don't get some people...

Let's see, it is the government's responsibility to provide healthcare and medical coverage, college education, mortgage protection, insurance protection during national disasters, retirement funds, highway funding and national defense. And I thought we defeated communism...

Just once I'd like to see a presidential candidate say, "I want to make sure that we do things my way." Instead we seem to get double talk that says they want to curtail our rights more than they already are. No one spends my money better than Me. The healthcare system is burdened by oversight in Washington. Each time a new law is passed to protect us we get further from our rights. Someday, the people will want real leaders again who don't feel threatened by people who are capable of making their own decisions.

I disagree with the potential Ruler's idea of having the gov't make decisions for me. If she wants to do what the people want, have her and the rest of the politicians pay out of their pocket for SS and health care, instead of the tax payers paying for it. Also, allow up to $15,000 tax credit for insurance premiums and 100% of all medical expenses reimbursed each year and carried over excess if no more taxes left to deduct from. That way, the person instead of drawing from their savings, selling homes, and forfeiting college funds to pay the $50,000 and more for cancer treatment will not be burdened by the excessive tax structure. Having the gov't take on more decisions for us is not a good thing; they are elected to be governed by the people, not dictate to us!!

By mandating insurance you are removing the individual's right to choose????? Maybe, but I don't have a choice when my hospital has to treat people that choose not to have insurance. The hospital then passes the cost to those of us that were responsible and bought insurance, and we didn't weren't given the right to choose if we wanted to pay extra for the irresponsible acts of others. I am not a Hillary fan, but at least her "mandate" is being honest.

By mandating insurance you are removing individuals right to choose! It looks great at the begining--everybody has coverage but who is going to pay for it? How much are our taxes going to go up to pay for the insurance of those who aren't working, or those who don't want to work? What happens, once it is in place, when the government comes back and tells you when you have to go to the doctor, and they decide they aren't covering your lung cancer because you smoke? Yeah, I pay a lot for my health coverage, but ultimately I have the final decision. Socialized health care is a BAD IDEA! The government can't run anything, look at Social Security and Medicare and that is a small portion of the population--no they want a program that includes EVERYONE! Yikes.

Comment: I guess I am not teh working poor, but, I have always had health insurance, even when I was unemployed. If the federal government would mandate personal responsibility, instead of personal entitlement, we would all be better off. though i am not totally opposed to some form of universal insurance, what I want a guarantee on is that in twenty or thirty years, when the new "insurtncae program is running out of money and doesn't really work, the government will have the "hutz-pah" to correct itself, unlike the continuing saga of Social Security/Medicare.

Hillary is anti-choice and doesnot respect the right of every american to "choose what is good himself/herself.who wants the federal government to run his/her life?.Hillary has embraced the radical leftist view wholeherted!!.
Barack is pro-choice and understands the fundamentals of heqalthcare economicsand respect free-choice!!!.The larger issue is the majority of Americans like their present healthcare system because it still the best in the world although expensive to some few low-income groups.
Competition rather than monoplies by insurance & drug companies will reduce healthcare costs more than govt mandates!!.

  • Posted By: ayoss58 @ 02/18/2008 7:14:01 AM

What are these self-appointed experts saying?.That if the government can force me to buy an insurance policy which I cannot afford, all the 47 million uninsured will get insured. How convoluted such a reasoning!!!.
What is an unaffordable is unaffordable hence unsustainable. No amount of coercion from the federal government is going to gurantee compliance.Instead, more people will opt out. That's why Hillary is a disaster with her socialist plans.Today is mandatory universal healthcare, tomorrow will be universal kindergarden,housing,foodstumps......the list of mandates never ending!!!.

  • Posted By: ayoss58 @ 02/18/2008 7:03:03 AM

Universal mandate vs individual choice.Politically, a mandate implies coercion which is unacceptable to Americans at large.Mass & Cal have tried mandates and they don't achieve the results intended.Infact to argue that affordability & accessability is inferior to government mandates is not supported by the facts hence, just political manipulations from leftists think-tanks.
What Hillary and supporters can't answer is how are you going to enforce the mandate and what constitute a reasonable individual contribution?.What is reasonable to Hillary's income doesnot mean in reality anything reasonable because its not the free-market but some arbitrary intervention by government. What is politically a dogma doesnot translate into sound economic policy. The economic truth is that mandates result into distortions & higher costs than voluntary market-orientated healthcare plans.Hence, for all the hype,Hillary's plan is inferior!!!.

Universal health care would be a plus no doubt. The problem that needs attention is why do health insurance comanies call the shots. The power of health care should be with the doctors and the families. We all know that health insurance companies don't care about the well being of the people only the well being of thier bank accounts. Please will someone stand up for the people. fhskns@aol.com

I honestly do not care who does it but it is a MUST. Where I come from (Chile), everybody has health insurance, it is very simple... your employer uses your own money to get it for you, at least 7% of your paycheck, is the same porcentage for everybody and depending on how much you pay it's how much you have to pay to your doctors, we do not pay excesive money for medicines, all we need is the prescription (if needed) and drugstores "fight" to give you the best price, it is not a matter of whether you have insurance to get your medicine at a reasonable price. If you work, your employer MUST pay for your health insurance and your retirement plan.
Yes, they take it out of your paycheck but, it is for you, isn't it?
Who would have thought... a so called third world country!!!

Hillary Clinton uses the vehicle of 'Universal Health care' , which sounds good, but when you read further into what she is REALLY attempting to do, you will see the fascist attitude that is evolving from this vehicle called 'Universal Health Care' that she is continually touting about as if it is the 'savior of this country'. Hillary could end up being worse than Bush ever was, because of the clever way in which the Clinton machine can charm the brains right out of people's heads, so much so, that people won't even READ and do their own RESEARCH to see what is really being revealed from Hillary's lips. Times columnist Andres writes. He adds that, "despite her reassuring rhetoric" that her health care proposal is not a "government takeover" and contains no "new bureaucracy," Clinton proposes to "use the heavy hand of government" to require all residents to obtain health insurance. Her "near-religious zeal to force universal coverage strikes some as odd," Andres writes, adding, "Why compel someone to buy something he or she can't afford?" According to Andres, the "financial penalties for those who fail to purchase insurance ... stirs significant opposition," and Clinton "opened a political can of worms" when she said that she might seek to garnish the wages of residents who can afford health insurance but do not obtain coverage. "Improving health care is a salient bread-and-butter election issue this year," Andres writes, adding, "Compelling everyone to buy a product, whether he wants it or not ... sounds more like a mandate for defeat than a promise of political success" (Andres, Washington Times, 2/14).

Most other country's dont have to deal with millions of people illegally in their country so their healthcare issues are totally different. This country needs a different healthcare system forsure... But something is wrong when people who snuck over here in the USA can get brain and heart surgery by qualifing for medical..yet I make a decent living, and if I needed a serious procedure I would have to sell my house, before the government would give any assistance...I've seen it happen over and over again....Painful stuff to know..

  • Posted By: HelpMeDecide @ 02/17/2008 6:09:38 PM

So let me get this straight. Hillary's healthcare plan will mandate that Americans maintain health insurance but the 20 million illegal immigrants still get their healthcare for free? With our tax dollars? And we will be subject to some sort of penalty if we dont? WOW.....

Interesting! I personally think that each of us needs to take care of ourselves in a more wholesome way, by using natural products and plenty of fruits and veggies. We need to lesson the burden of the healthcare system. There is some good info on firstforhealth.com
