The Sheriff in our county (Fairfield/Ohio) just reported there has not been 1 complaint with any of the concealed carry license holders here in 4 years. These citizens have passed gun safety courses, fingerprint checks, & BCI background checks, receiving approval from the State Attorney General. These well-trained law-abiding citizens bring an added element of safety in our violent society. How many detractors would pass the same scrutiny these license holders have submitted to?

One of the FBI's most dangerous cities over 100,000, Columbus, is just 20 miles North, where I see weekly assaults/shootings/stabbings in my Fire Department job, often committed against helpless victims. Those who work on the street know criminals can get guns anywhere, quickly. ALL police officers know this.

Our society is only benefited by well trained, licensed, armed citizens, whether on city streets or on college campuses, who have the ability to protect themselves & their fellow citizens from the violent attacks that are increasing around us every day.

As a student and a responsible firearm owner, i would feel quite safer if i was allowed to carry on campus. I don't want to be a hero, i just don't want to be a victim

Just wondering: was this guy in Illinois a "law-abiding citizen" before he blew these people away? And if so, doesn't that undercut the argument that "law-abiding" citizens should be able to carry guns pretty much wherever they want? As for "gun-free" zones, most of the "idiots" noted below would be people like Senator Coburn and Dick Cheney, who work in government buildings, where, of course, guns are not allowed. Why not allow guns in elementary and middle schools, too? Massacres happen there, and I assume the kids who carry them out are probably "law-abiding" citizens. A well-trained and well-armed group of twelve-year-olds might be able to stop some kid who brought his "law-abiding" father's gun to class one day. Sounds logical, right? I realize that some people are afraid of the world and feel more masculine (and more willing to start a fight) when carrying a gun, but it hardly seems likely that increasing the number of hidden firearms in the US is going to make anyone safer.

No one has a legitimate fear from law-abiding age appropriate students being licensed to carry a concealed firearm on campus. These same students have the right to carry concealed weapons in other public venues and there is no history of problems from that. The people who have the most to fear are the few idiots who are going into "gun-free" zones and having no opposition in their slaughter.

What ever happened to Morality, Personal Responsibility and Free Choice?
Dr. Lyle Rossiter, A top psychiatrist
"The roots of liberalism - and its associated madness - can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

"a social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity. "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population - as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state ???

All these campus killers seem to have alot in common; they were intelligent,; they obtained their firearms legally, they had no prior criminal record, they showed few outward signs of being disturbed, they came from well-respected families, and they majored in difficult fields. Guns were not the problem, of course. If they could not have obtained guns they would have used something else. No, guns were the instruments. There was something wrong, something deeper, more sinister. The fabric of society is coming apart. You can do nothing to prevent these kinds of tragedies. Even worse, you cannot bring the assailant to justice if he kills himself along with his victims. There is a philisophical problem here. Young folks have nothing to believe in. We are seeing the results of 100 or so years of decadent philosophies that all the universities have been promoting. All together these philosophies tell college students that they are nobodies, that reality is subjective, there are no values, you the individual mean nothing, etc. If we introduce positive philosophies into the universities it may take another 100 years before we see results. My own personal opinion is that all learning should take place online, not in a public place. That way nobody gets shot.

      1) What other weapon can take out 20 people in a matter of minutes? A bomb maybe? That requires these people to know how to make one, as well as the time to make one. SInce these types of events aren't usually planned out in great detail, its a lot less likely that a bomb would be used. So what else is there? Take the guns away, and we will not have these mass killings.

      2) Are you serious about the online educations comment? It could just as easily happen at a mall, or a park, or a restaruant.

      3) I don;t know where you went to college or if you went to college, but my experiences at several colleges has been NOTHING like you described. I learned how to be an individual, and that my opportunities were limitless as an individual. I was shown the importance of public service, and encouraged to give back to society. I think your assessment is way off base.

Our county was founded on the ability of people helping people. Ordinary people should not be afraid of guns. I don't own one but I can understand the balance of power needed. Guns don't kill people, they reduce the thinking time. If more citizens were armed, then the unhappy gunner would be "thinking" about that, before picking it up. If this could change their mind, then we all win.

More guns? Let us guess for half a second who supports that idea...the gun industry and its nut fan club. The same ones who have put us in the middle of a gun epidemic.

Our legislators have sold us out while accepting the campaign dollars from this powerful lobby group. It comes down to corruption and dollars...better spelled out "Washington".

    • Posted By: bvfd920 @ 02/16/2008 9:46:45 AM

hhmmm....Washington.....now that is a safe place. No handguns allowed..period....No loaded firearms or unlocked firearms allowed period (that includes rifles, shotguns, and Grandpa's antique black powder rifle)......How do they manage to have the #1 muder rate in the country right up there next to Camden, NJ when no one is allowed to have a loaded gun at all???????????? Please explain your thought process there. Us gun nuts down here in the South have the safest and lowest crime rates in the 'burbs we live in. Yet we got all the guns.......

Your math just ain't adding up there......

Sensationalism not guns cause people to kill people. The guns have been around for centuries but recent live coverage has given it the instant national coverage these sick folks crave. We need to control the media not the guns. I propose we limit news coverage of these events to print only with no pictures. This alone will help cut back on the attention that these crazies are seeking and slow this process down.

We should be focusing on prevention before a gun gets drawn, not retaliation. Why did no one notice this coming? why didn't someone inform the police he was off his meds? How come no one knew he was off his meds?? If you arm the classrooms it's going to make assailants more likely to come in armed with heavier firepower, that can be seen in any situation where one side attempts to match the assailants firepower. look at what the miami police are dealing with (for example). People licensed to carry concealed weapons are, as far as I'm aware, not combat trained, they're much more likely to make the situation worse than better. This macho cowboy bullshit is just that, bullshit. why? because the guy emptied his weapons and killed himself practically in the blink of an eye. no one with a concealed would have had time to do much of anything. Oh and, I think we should all be thankful that the police at NIU we're so well prepared for this situation.

    • Posted By: bvfd920 @ 02/16/2008 8:44:47 AM

Are you high???? Or just stupid??? How in the hell is someone supposed to see this coming? Do your next door neighbors know when you forget to take your medication every day? And no one fires 50+ rounds in the blink of an eye. I shoot competitively in handgun competitions, and we are the fastest, most accurate shooting people on the planet. We can't shoot that fast, and we train to shoot fast. The fastest guys on earth can reload a typical gun in maybe 1 second on average. i know people who can draw a weapon and their first shot in under a second also. Now tell me it is impossible to stop an idiot like this from firing 50+ rounds into a crowd if just one person had their handgun on them. And, until you have been through a concealed carry course, you don't have an idea of what training we have and how responsible we are because that split second reaction can cause us to go to jail and lose everything if we squeeze off a shot and hit an innocent bystander. And we don't go to the bar and get drunk with our friends while waving firearms in the air, so get that crap out of your head. AND, we don't go looking for a fight. I am not out to save the world, but i will do everything in my power to protect my life, liberty, and all that other fun stuff....

I would do everything in my power to save you as well, whether you are a liberal, non-informed, blubbering idiot or not.....

1 more thing. the police took 2 minutes (so they say) to respond. And yes, i just said that this didn't happen in a blink of an eye, but it was over in less than 2 minutes. And being a fire-fighter, the response time was the time the PD drove up on the scene, not the time they came to rescue anyone. It probably took them another 2-3 minutes to assess the situation and actually enter the building.......so now we are looking at more like a 5 minute response (great preparation and response). BFD..........people are dead because someone like me who is licensed, trained, and able to defend life, liberty, and all the other fun stuff wasn't there to draw my weapon and fire one well placed shot under great amounts of stress........

    • Posted By: disgustedamerican @ 02/16/2008 3:08:00 AM

you don't need combat training to know how to shoot a gun. It's really quite simple. One guy,two hands.thirty classmates well you get the idea.

    • Posted By: disgustedamerican @ 02/16/2008 3:03:19 AM

yes prevention is the key. This guy was probably was stereotypical geeky loner type, abused, mocked and not loved very much, and lost all hope.Where a lot of people are right now.Desperate for salvation and not finding any.Meds didn't offer any obviously.Life beat him up to the point of no return, and nobody could reach him or offer any answers to his problems. That is the cause.Jesus Christ is the cure for all.there is no hope without Him.Read Ephesians 2:8,9. And no retalliation, just self defense. And he did bring a guitar case Full of firepower, and everybody else had #2 pencils. It's still better to have and not need than to need and not have. No macho stuff.

Comment : I guess I still don"t understand how the people in this country , ( U.S.A. ) can call themselves the smartest people on the planet ? We have taught our children about SEX in school . We have taught them about history , and WAR and death , and don't talk to strangers ! When are we going to teach our children how to use guns to protect themselves ? I grew-up around guns , my grandfather was a gunsmith and we were taught at a very young age thet guns are not toys ! Most people are only scared of guns because they don't know anything about them . They only hear about the things that they think guns do ! Lesson #1 - Guns don't kill people ! People KILL people ! If you take away the guns from people that are trained to use them , all you have left are the people that would use a knife or baseball bat or some other way to kill you or your children ! I'm not saying we should have our children in the ARMEY like other countries . But don't you think our sons and daughters should be trained how to protect themselves from DANGER ! IT'S TIME TO PULL OUR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND , AND LEARN HOW TO PROTECT OURSELVES !

The simple and indisputable fact is that if we refuse clear minded, law abiding citizens the right to cary the tools to defend themselves; then such people will always be defenseless against deranged whack jobs who dont care whether the law allows them to possess or cary weapons. Citizens with a legal right to cary concealed firearms are required to attend lengthy classes in both the laws regarding use of deadly force as well as to obtain and demonstrate proficiency in handling and using those weapons. If anyone ever stormed into a large group of people with the intent to kill as many as possible and I were present and carying my legally concealed firearm, that person would be disabled long before he could rack up a substantial body count.

  • Posted By: perldog007 @ 02/16/2008 7:59:09 AM

to wkgator - I concede that if guns were not available these killers would have to use other means, like the man in New York who killed over 80 people with a gallon of gas or less.

Even if we stop legal guns from being sold to anyone with any kind of mental patient history, these people could still get guns. Also, using a brush that broad is unwise. Most people who seek treatment for mental illness are less violent than the public at large.

If you are calling 21 year old students children, yes we live in a country where children who have become adults need to be responsible for their own safety.
Do you believe that gun bans actually stop anybody who wants to commit crime from getting guns?
If so why does D.C. have such high crime? If we take away the guns will criminals be harmless? If so why are prisons so dangerous?

I firmly believe that one of the students who was allowed to carry a concealed weapon could have prevented some of those other students deaths! My father taught me gun safety and to shoot when I was 8, I did the same with my daughter. She's now 21 and we BOTH have our concealed carry license and carry faithfully. If there were armed students or faculty there the shooter could have been stopped at his first reload for sure!

Every American citizen has the ''right'' and obligation to return fire for his and his fellow citizen's safety.

  • Posted By: valbjorn @ 02/16/2008 4:51:02 AM

Here in Switzerland we have easy access to guns along with the highest gun related crime rate in Europe(along with Finland). Although nowhere near the rate in the states it's around 6 times the average rate in Europe.
What happens to the quality of life in a country where everyone is so afraid that they must carry a gun at all times? Sad indeed.
Someone commented if it's not guns then it will be knives-you can't kill 30 people with a knife-it's virtually impossible.

    • Posted By: wkgator @ 02/16/2008 6:16:14 AM

HEY ! Valbjorn you should think before you comment that it , ( IN YOUR WORDS ) would be VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KILL 30 PEOPLE WITH A KNIFE ! Tell that to the people of 9/11 that died because people with ( BOX CUTTERS ) Type of KNIFE ! wkgator
