From where I sit, it looks like its Clinton who has been getting something of a "free ride" from the media - especially the media talking heads who have handled the debates. Hillary's Republicanesque voting record particularly on foreign policy issues, defense contract pork, and anti consumer legislation like the so called bankruptcy "reform" has been barely mentioned. although if her voting record isn't relevant to her nomination, I don't know what is...

someone here hasn't studied much of either side of the parties. While I agree that as of late, republicans have gone overboard on spending and have strayed from their conservative values, the over spending, pork, etc is typically a thing that the democrats push. Every time a decent piece of legislation is proposed, there is great debate, blame, etc, because some democrat has added pork to it for the companies he "owes" If a piece of legislature could be pure and focus on the subject matter at hand we would all be better off and have less financial waste. But, as long as either side is "owned" by their special interest groups, this won't happen.

At least when Democrats spend, they pay for it with tax increases. Tax and spend is certainly much better than borrow and spend, which is the tactic of the Republican party.

Also, both parties suck up to corporations too much. But the Republicans do it more...far more.

        • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 02/18/2008 4:26:28 PM

oh great, lets raise taxes so the Dems can keep spending, yes that's the answer..... How about we just get rid of the pork, the special interests, the big government and maybe keep our hard earned money for our own needs. That way we might be able to aford our own health care instead of having it rammed down our throats.... As I said, bot sides need to cut the spending

Evan, if Obama gets the Democratic nomination, I expect you to continue your magazine's adoring coverage.

I will be very very angry if you, Howard, Jonathan and others decide to delve deeper into his psyche after he is the Democratic candidate.

Is it too much to ask you people to do your jobs? To provide readers with a sense of who these people are instead of stereotypes like Maverick! The New JFK! The Shrill Harpy!

You should have been providing us insight all along, highlighting each candidates strengths and weakness.

A un-fair press, is just mis-directed and not a free press.

  • Posted By: bill_txus @ 02/18/2008 4:08:33 PM

Its always someone else's fault when a politician loses.

"They didnt understand the message", "The press was unfair" ,etc

They never consider that voters preferred another candidate, and like them and their policies better. It shows the real contempt politicians have for the voters, since the voters must be mistaken or duped, if they chose someone else.

I can't handle seeing a black man with only a couple of years of experience in national politics, or any other person with that little experience, being elected President. Get over it.

    • Posted By: Calvin67 @ 02/18/2008 4:04:05 PM

Another person who really took the time to look at a candidates hirtory and what they have done and accomplished. Thank God for free speech in this country, cause if there were laws against dumb comments, there be a lot of people in this blog getting arrested!!! Hopefully, you will go fishing and stop posting!

if you were talking to me GoneFishin, I am over it....... as I said before, he's not the only person that has run for President that had little experience............. NOW YOU GET OVER IT.

I really admire Sen. Obama for trying to apply for a job that white people really don't want him to have. Instead of writing all this yib yab.... be honest with yourself..... just say that you can't handle seeing a black man (who by the way isn't all black) run for presidency. I think African Americans can handle the truth. Since you keep writing about wanting the truth and putting the blame of the media for doing this and that. Put your truths out there. America has had white presidents after white presidents and look at the country now. What more damage could Sen Obama do? He just might make a change. He won't change some of your minds because their small and really not worth changing because you want to keep this country divided and you like things the way it is.For the people who say they are democrats and won't vote for Sen. Obama should he get the nomination...... that's cool tooo..... I'm more than sure that it won't shock Sen Obama one bit at all....

The "Clintonistas"? Give me a break. And by the way - "It's a good guess that the current media darlings, Obama and John McCain, will experience the fickleness of the press before too long.". Gee. Do you think it will be before the Democrats select their candidate? Would that the press have represented the candidates in a fair and balanced way. Guess that's gone the way of the nightly news.

  • Posted By: CalifLady36 @ 02/18/2008 12:11:52 PM

It is ivident that the press supports obama. He has been anointed as the savior and the press totally refuses to delve into his platform with a unpartial analysis and unpartial reporting of same. I am very concerned because many of the comments that I read here are obviously from the biased Hillary haters, which hate her because of the hype they have heard over the past 8-10 years. It is very immaterial whether or not Hillary knew about Bill Clinton's sexual episodes and how she handled it. She is under no obligation to explain anything to you haters or the media. So much misinformation and slanted reporting has been put out by the media against the Clinton's that I am wondering how this country will continue forward. Obama is given everything by the media - but what the media fails to comment on, is what is obama really bringin into the whtite house without experience? This is the most frightening issue of all. Without experience, what will he accomplish? It won't get better, it will become worse, because without experience, he will put into his cabinet those people to whom he owes favors to by their contributions. Don't think so? Think again - obama is no different from any politician. His weapon for hiding this is the media and the celebrity endorsement, brought to you by ophrah, the kennedys and crew. How much money and how much behind the scenes work is ophrah doing here? You simple don't recognize this. The male Hillary haters are convinced she is the worse woman in the world, becaus she is a woman and because her last name is Clinton - and all of this influence is put forth by the media. Clinton did not bring up the race issue --he made a statement which was then picked up by the so called black eleite - Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, the two most racist and biased people on earth which the media ingnored. Stating that Chelsea Clinton has been pimped out by the Clintons is disgusting. Unfortunately, with all the bias from the media, what iwll happen is that the republicans will tear apart obama and I say good for them.

    • Posted By: Calvin67 @ 02/18/2008 12:20:25 PM

Most of your Post is too ridiculous to respond too. Just want to rebut your portion of Chelsea and her being Pimped-Out.
The Webster's Dictionary defines Pimped as follows: to make use of often dishonorably for one's own gain or benefit. If that is not what the Clinton's have done with Chelsea, then I don't know what it is......... By the way the Webster's Dictionary is available online, you should make some use of it.

      • Posted By: yellow dog @ 02/18/2008 1:38:51 PM

Chelsea Clinton is 26 years old. If she chose to campaign for/with her mother that's her choice, just like the Romney boys' chose to do for/with their dad. She has not been "pimped out" any more than Mrs. Obama has been "pimped out"!

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:49:25 PM

So essentially, Chelsea pimped herself out.

I posted this further down in response to Joeygirlny who I was having a strong exchange with. Even though we had some negative blogs she came forward with why she supports Senator Clinton and I thank her and respect her for doing that. Here was my reply: Great Post, Seriously I mean it and I wish more people would do what you just did and address with facts why they support or don't support a candidate (trust me I can be good at driving negative points home too, I know you know that!!). I like what you said, although I disagree with some of it, but that can be talked about. President Clinton instituted many trade policies we are paying for today (NAFTA, China Technology Transfers, China to the WTO) and that is what people seem to forget; that the economic policies of a President are generally not felt until one or two terms later. Having said that, I don't second guess President Clinton for those decisions (I don't agree with them or endorse them) as he felt at that time that they were in the best interest of our country to start dealing openly with what was surely a country becoming a World Power. The question is, were they good decisions, and more importantly, will she make good decisions. Senator Obama has been very open about all his plans, and yes that we all might have to make some sacrifices for them, but he is very clear and outlines it all on his website. Additionally, we as Americans have become so Consumer Driven and have such a sense of entitlement, that I think Obama scares people because they realize in his Presidency that we may all be held more accountable. Hillary just keeps handing out Nyquil telling everyone that she will fix their personal problems (like she just did in a press piece to a woman who was going to foreclosure in Wisconsin). That is not the message of a President, that is a deception to win people over who don't really understand how the political process works. Senator Clinton is trying to sell herself as the fixer for all, and we know this is not possible. Senator Obama has said that the nation working together is the only thing that will change this country to a more positive and stable future, and that is the truth. Sadly, this country still might not be ready for that and we might have to travel down an even more frighteneing road for another four years then we have for the last eight. Americans can't have their cake and eat it too. Senator Obama for the first time in many decades is talking about government for the people by the people, for all of our betterment. But the rich and big business are afraid of all their tax shelters and incentives being taken away (And will vote McCain), and many welfare recipients are afraid that they may actually have to start working (and will vote Clinton). Only one person is saying we must "ALL" make sacrifices and work together for the betterment of our country and our future and that is Senator Obama. I hope and Pray that he will be our next P

to change party affiliations and vote for the best candidate out there. He just happens to be a Republican whose record speaks for itself. Ron Paul. You may have been brainwashed by the media that everyone despises so much, but if you non thinking Lemmimngs would do a little research you would discover the truths no one (candidate or media) wants you to know. His voting record is Pro Taxpayer, Anti War,

    Balanced budget

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:45:50 PM

Paul is a nutjob. Aside from his correct stance on the war, he's got horrible positions on just about every major issue. Most notably, he's "Pro-Life", which makes no sense as a "libertarian".

  • Posted By: Dr. Dave @ 02/18/2008 12:58:44 PM

Pro Balanced budget. He votes the way the laws specifically the Constituion of this country require. If all the other candidate could say the same, everyone would be treated fairly by the media. The only reason Hillary thinks she's being singled out is because she has something to hide. Don't get me wrong, I have no issues with a woman , or an African American in the Whitehouse. They just need to be honest. Dr. Dave

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:44:55 PM

Paul is "Pro-Life", which is actually anti-libertarian. Libertarianism is antithetical to democracy. Plus, he's even older than McCain.

  • Posted By: Mvanderpool @ 02/18/2008 2:10:03 PM

I truly believe that the media does see Barack Obama as the second coming of Christ, but in do time the media will turn on him pointing out his flaws and inablilty to lead this nation. But by the time, it will be too late and America will have nominated a man that is not ready to run this country and is not ready to contend with a republican candiate in a general election. Obama's people are cult-like and the countries democrats are becoming more divided than we have in a long time. This is a history making campaign, but also a smack in the face for all democrats when he enters the White House! Hillary will make a come back an she will be our President!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:42:09 PM

Hillary will have a hard time against McCain. It will be old cranky guy against slightly younger cranky woman. Obama is a whole new animal and will give McCain fits. Go Obama!

For the first time ever, the press has held a Democrat to a higher standard, and the Clintons are in shock. Republicans get grilled all the time. When Democrats are interviewed, they get cream puff questions from fawning reporters like do you think we should all have health care and be millionaires. When Republicans are interviewed, the reporters get nasty and only ask divisive questions like abortion and gun control.

Of couse, the press isn't biased with 90% of their contributions going to Democrats according to a recent study, and all major news shows headed by Democratic administrations.... George Stepanopolous, Chris Mathews, and Tim Russert.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:39:35 PM

Go peddle your "liberal press" canard somewhere else. If the press had done its job, we wouldn't be in this war and Bush wouldn't have had the free reign to wreck this country like he has. Thankfully, the ineptitude of Bush and the Republicans as a whole have given us a new opportunity to stake out new territory for the party and Obama is the guy to do it.

Back in 2000 when I first heard talk about Hillary running for pres I was not thrilled or enthused, in the least. As a matter of fact McCain had also been forecast by many political pundits as her opponent. I don't find political family dynasties very appealing, especially when the position they seek is the same and not far removed from the previous office holder. It makes me feel a little more like a royal subject and less like a citizen. But once this race for the Pres started and it became clearer who we had to choose from on both sides of the isle, my choice became quite a bit easier. My first pick was Joe Biden, who I knew didn't stand a chance in hell, because of lengthy career in Washington and the small state he came from. Hillary quickly became my best and only choice. Obama had potential for the future and had been on my scope since his senate race just a few years earlier. But he seemed to way too green. I'm African-American myself, but never even considered voting for him just for that one reason, or to make a statement about race in America, or to make history. My concern is for the current state of the country and who I think based on everythiing we know about them is best suited lead this country now. Both at home and abroad. This is not American Idol or a vote fro the prom king/queen. We cannot role the dice again on a virtual unknown fresh faced, I'm an outsider hear to save you from the evil corrupt broken Washington, again! How stupid can we be? This is not a new type of politics! This is the "same old same old" the "status quo". The bias against Hillary and in favor of Obama seemed to start around the time he won Iowa and the press seems intent on continuing until the bitter end.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:37:53 PM

Wow. The press coverage of Obama started heating up after he won Iowa? Whatever could that mean? I have supported Obama from early on. However, until Iowa, I wasn't sure he could win in the general election. That victory convinced me that it was possible. It also convinced the press, hence the increased coverage.

  • Posted By: Cascadia @ 02/17/2008 4:09:18 PM

if someone were to merely put up the pictures from the press showing images of Clinton vs Obama it would be obvious to a second grader that the press is so biased. They have failed in their responsibility as the fourth estate and are nothing more then paparazzie trying to sell Brittany Spears to us. George Stephanopolousi is a perfect example. When Bill Clinton was at the height of the impeachment crisis he turned on his former boss.. He is nothing more then the guy who hosts the survivor reality shows, lacking any real susbtance and not particualry bright

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:33:26 PM

The press can't help the fact that Hilary is not physically attractive or charismatic. Lots of people don't look good in pictures. There's no bias.

  • Posted By: williepete @ 02/17/2008 4:21:27 PM

Has everyone forgotten that Rove offered in an open letter how Obama should battle Hillary? Of course, the Republicans want to run against him! They will highlight his admiited drug use and make him look like a terrorist-arab-muslim sympathizer. Did everyone forget how the repubilcans defeated Harold Ford in TN, Harvey Gantt in NC and Max Cleland the invalid war hero in GA? In each case, they used common low-life stereotypes and exploited bigotry. Obama will be an easy target for the Atwater/Rove divisve and hateful tactics. And, the media will cooperate as if they do not see the strategy unfold. Remember, Whitewater was a failed investment that was investigated for 6 years while governors all over the country did much worse to increase the land values of their cronies. Clearly, the media has been manipulated by the repubilcans for years!! Most are a lot more worried about their next pay check than the good of the country!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:30:06 PM

You're wrong. Hilary has the highest negatives. They want to go against her. Your premise is incorrect.

  • Posted By: Faithfulbm @ 02/18/2008 3:28:56 PM

Obama is simply a more interesting person to cover than Hillary. He inspires a wider group of people.
