If Hillary Clinton does not receive the Democratic nomination, the media definitely has to take the responsibility for its negative coverage of her. The coverage of Senator Clinton has been negative, and definitely influnences the way some people will vote. Let the process go forward, with an unbiased report on both of the Democratic candidates. I have never seen so many man-crushes on Obama by members of the press.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:28:53 PM

The coverage is negative because the candidate is negative. Simple as that.

  • Posted By: rex range @ 02/17/2008 6:24:49 PM

The fact that the breathtakingly corrupt Clinton Machine doesn't like some of the what the media says about it is so laughable as to be almost incomprehensible. For every morsel of allegedly "tough" treatment of Hillary there are 500 fawning, conveniently-forget-the-bad-stuff, could-have-been-written-by-her-PR-flunkies stories to cushion the fall. Republicans and Independents (capital "I," thank you) have faced roughly the opposite positive-vs.-negative ratio for 50 years. If the Clintons don't like what the media does they wouldn't last a day or an hour as a Republican or Independent. And if they and their political assasins/stormtroopers succeed in stealing this nomination, I--someone who is champing at the bit to vote for Obama--will join the vast overriding majority of Americans in voting for John McCain for president.

Ah...the old "liberal media" canard. Go peddle that urban myth somewhere else please.

The job of the press is to get information. They hate hiders and liars. So, how else can they feel about a "middle class" candidate who writes her campaign a check for $5 million and won't disclose her tax returns?

    • Posted By: placidgirl7 @ 02/18/2008 9:57:12 AM

The Obama charge of Hillary not disclosing her tax returns is as phony as everything else this guy is peddling - she is required to disclose her tax returns as a member of Congress. Obama is a liar....he is deliberately stating things about Hillary that are a lie and the stupid press is eating it up because they are not "coddled" and made to feel "special" by the Clintons. Well, 21 million jobs, a balanced federal budget - indeed with a surplus, and trying to take out Osama bin Laden tells me the Clintons are the preferred choice in the White House. It's the press who constantly state destructive things about her and Bill - well, it's very interesting of how Bill Clinton is praised by the newly-independent people in Kosovo for sending in NATO troops to free the people and stop genocide and the people of Ireland are grateful to him for bringing peace to Northern Ireland. Obama made a "boneheaded" choice by getting some land next to his house with the help of a crook - to keep people away from his big, new home....who is the hider and liar?

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:27:11 PM

If experience is king, then McCain should be president. After all, he's way more experienced than Hillary.

I think Hillary is setting herself up for a defeat by claiming a strength against Obama (supposed experience) which can be used as a club to beat over her head in the general election.

  • Posted By: Cliff n WA @ 02/17/2008 9:14:43 PM

For many years now I have been concerned with the news media not accepting the responsibility to be fair arbitrators of information. Ratings and entertainment are more important than educating the electorate. I now feel manipulated so the press can have a horse race. Any objective analysis of political news coverage will show the so called "free press" is stumping for Obama. Pay particular attention to the graphics during election coverage emphasizing Obama wins. The legitimate issue of qualification and competence to be POTUS is being ignored and discouraged. Chris Matthews (Feb.9) had a guest, who happens to be black, say he questions Obama as a "viable and serious" candidate; they could not get his face off the screen fast enough, the same for the other guy who try to say it was silly to believe polls today can tell what will happen in November. My question is do you think this will continue through November? Will the news machine try to salvage credibility?
I think once Hillary is disposed of the issue of qualification, competence and experience will result in another republican victory. Many democrats do not have the excuse of youth in believing polls suggesting Obama has the better chance. We should all know the most pressing concern come November will be who is best qualified to be commander in chief and McCain is already staking claim to that moniker.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:25:30 PM

Um...Obama wins are the story. Hillary and the press have acted as if her nomination was more like a coronation. Obama has destroyed that illusion. Obama's grass-roots movement IS the story. Hillary's policy wonking is not.

  • Posted By: Igloo @ 02/17/2008 10:19:15 PM

Okay, now that the media has defeated Hillary and have their candidate in Obama - can you guys do your job and start reporting. I do want to know the details on how he is going to get us out of Iraq. What kind of situation will be in Iraq and its vicinity once the US under Obama leaves the neighborhood? Will the aftermath be similar to what happened in South Asia after the British left? What about Africa? One of the beef against Bill Clinton by black commentators and talk show hosts is that he did not do much for Rwanda. What is Obama going to do for the troubled African countries? (Would Obama do more than Bill Clinton did in Rwanda for the African nations because of his African heritage?) Is he going to send the troops into Kenya? His resume is as light as Bush's when he took office and you never questioned Bush (because Bush was the presses candidate too) and now you have Obama - we need to know...

    • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 02/18/2008 10:51:32 AM

Bush was the presses candidate? What extremely large rock had you been living under? The press has been against Bush from the beginning

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:23:37 PM

Wrong. Bush has received a free ride. I'll say this, he and Rove came up with a masterful strategy for manipulating press access to get the coverage they want and to squelch the stories they don't. If you have any doubt, google "Jeff Gannon".

    • Posted By: clikdawg @ 02/17/2008 10:47:09 PM

Ah, but IF Hillary has been defeated (still a big IF), we now enter the "glittering generalities" phase of the campaign, where candidates can avoid detailed answers to the excellent questions you've raised by simply saying it's not their place to get too specific while the current Administration is still negotiating, conducting military and intelligence operations, etc. Odds are at this point they'll let McCain slide on those generalities and rough Obama up -- and we will begin to get a idea which one of them The Establishment really wants as Our New Figure Head; the contest then devolving into which of them can best get folks to go along with whatever the program'll be fior the next 4 - 8 years: Obama the Motivator or McCain the Hard Old So-and-So.ing

  • Posted By: Cliff n WA @ 02/17/2008 10:45:22 PM

I want a win in November and I want health care - Obama will deliver neither!
I think republicans are salivating at the prospect of Obama over Clinton, but are holding their cards close to the vest. Bashing Hillary serves two purposes: weakening her and diverting attention from the issue of Barak???s lack of experience and gravitas that McCain will exploit. I laugh at republicans on TV saying they will be energized against Hillary, as if we have not seen over a year apathy and dejection over the prospect. I visualize McCain holding his breath, fearing people will catch on that Obama is his best hope of winning. But, of course now is not the optimal time to reveal just how Barak will be diminished and made to look less than presidential. McCain would love democrats to get rid of the strongest candidate! Without Clinton universal health care as an issue will be minimal, she trounces McCain on economic issues and Hillary will not be tagged as weak and naive on international affairs and terrorism.
If health care is not mandated the legislation will fail. Republicans will argue a cost cutting alternative knowing partisan politics and compromise will gut any plan once the principle of universality is relinquished. They might just ignore the issue. Clinton is the only one who can drive it through.
Who is going to be swayed across party lines if UHC looks DOA, Obama is challenged on the economy and McCain takes the commander in chief mantle. Sen. Clinton is ready to take on McCain, no one can doubt that. We could have had Al Gore if competency was not under-valued, let???s not make that mistake again.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:22:23 PM

Hillary does worse against McCain, period. This is not surprising. She has terrible negatives. The Republicans are praying (literally probably) for Hillary to win the nomination because they think they know how to beat her. You're premise is flawed and not backed up by the facts (go check the national polls).

    • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 02/18/2008 10:50:20 AM

Cliff n Wa, you want health care.... go get insurance. Can't afford it, seek help from family, church, charity. Don't try to push me into paying for you. You know, I want a big 4 wheel drive truck so I don't get stuck in the snow and can go to work to feed my family, I wan t a bigscreen tv like so many other people who are better off than me seem to be able to afford.... the list goes on.

But what I really want is a safe America for my children. Hillary and Obama will not provide that want and need. If we aren't safe, then all the healthcare in the world won't add up to a hill of beans. Lest you forget, we are at war. There are extremists out there who want us dead. None of your soft feelings and nice talk will change that. These extremist have HATED anyone not of their faith for thousands of years, what makes you think you will change that by talking nice? Maybe if you left you cozy little self absorbed world, picked up a gun with the military and visit these places, your eyes would be opened. Your "theories" do not work in reality. Main issue is keeping the fight away from our land and children

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:20:57 PM

Go back to freerepublic.com. Attacks against American interests have gone up, not down, under Bush. His policy has failed. He's wasted billions in an adventure in Iraq that had nothing to do with the real threats against America.

I'm supporting Obama, but even Hillary is miles better than any candidate the Republicans can muster.

  • Posted By: USMC1980 @ 02/17/2008 11:05:46 PM

This is yet another article in which the "Obama loving press" tries to explain why they aren't doing thier jobs and being objective. Journalists are supposed to be professionals, sadly those days appear over. All you hav to do is look at "hacks" like Howard Fineman, Johnathon Alter, Jon Meachum, Evan Thomas, Chuck Todd, Matthews, Olbermann and the rest of the pathetic Newsweek/NBC alliance and realize that these are not journalists...they are political opportunists who think they can "Tell" America who to vote for.

Doesn't work that way fellas. We will continue to vote for Hillary, and when she wins the nomnation, Newsweek/MSNBC will be left lokking weak and irrevlevant:)

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:18:52 PM

The Hillary nuts are funny in their logic. Obama is getting coverage, because his movement is interesting to people. What is interesting about Hillary? Nothing really. She was expected to be the defacto nominee and is now getting her lunch handed to her by a young, inspirational and charismatic leader. that's a story. The press isn't making it up.

** Man files Federal Lawsuit against Obama regarding GAY sexual act and drug use claims **

A man named Larry Sinclair posted a video to YouTube claiming to have used cocaine and engaged in a gay sexual act with Obama when Obama was a state legislator in 1999.

In the video, Sinclair claims he and Obama met on two separate occasions, that Obama used crack cocaine and that Sinclair performed an oral sexual act on Obama both evenings.

Now Obama and company are quickly trying to quiet this man, but Sinclair has filed a federal lawsuit. Sinclair filed suit against Obama and his campaign guru David Axelrod and DNC chair Howard Dean in Minnesota district court for allegedly attempting to abridge Sinclair's right to free speech, and for waging an intimidation campaign against him.

Hillary always passes the buck. When her machinations in the White House failed, she blamed it on imaginary "vast right-wing conspiracy". When her campaign failed she blamed it on the manager. When Obama gets more votes, she blames it on the Press. It is never her fault. Wake up, Hillary, the buck stops at your feet.

    • Posted By: placidgirl7 @ 02/18/2008 9:46:03 AM

Wake up dunnhaput - there was/is a vast right-wing conspiracy. Obama is the race-baiter and when Bill Clinton called the media on it, he was portrayed as race-baiting and "going too far" meanwhile, Obama is allowed to get away with lies and distortions about Hillary. He is using Karl Rove's playbook to tarnish he record - I'd like to say to the media - why aren't you asking for proof of his baseless charges?

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:13:01 PM

What baseless charge? Hillary did vote for the war and refuses to admit her mistake. Obama and the media should beat her over the head for assenting the largest foreign policy blunder in the history of the US.

  • Posted By: jrockwell@sprintmail.com @ 02/18/2008 8:53:53 AM

It is painfully obvious that Hillary is always at a disadvantage in the media. If Obama wins it will be evidence that it is the media who decides the elections. They are not passing the buck if anything acting with class in face of blantant unfair spin. She is not blaming it on the press but should. I am sick of the scandalous media being a weapon in all political elections or witch hunts. Just give us facts not opinion.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:11:55 PM

Um. The Hillary nuts are missing a very important point. A few months back, the press was ready to annoint her as the defacto nominee. It was only AFTER Obama showed that he had strong grass-roots support that they really took him seriously. They didn't MAKE Obama. In fact, they were ready to declare Hillary the winner before Iowa. The game on the ground changed, and thus so did their lead.

  • Posted By: TCallanan @ 02/18/2008 9:15:07 AM

If Obama hasn't been given a pass by the press, then where is the coverage of his open support of Donnie McClurkin (ex-gay, homophobe) on the Obama gospel tour? Where is the coverage of the sermons distributed by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah White, Jr. (anti-Semite, homophobe, Xenophobe), the one person who Obama describes as his 'spiritual mentor / surrogate father? Where is the coverage of Obama's race baiting to Latinos in LA,

where he claimed that there was a big Irish/Polish illegal immigration problem, but that only those who '
look different (people of color) were seen as a problem? He later revised his remarks to appear as though he meant that all groups were discriminated against, but the original transcript is still on ABSNews.com. This represents race / ethnic baiting of the most egregious kind. When Bill and Hillary Clinton made factual statements about MLK and Lyndon Johnson, the press had no problem running with the Obama talking-point, that this was racially offensive. It was the truth! If America cannot have an open conversation about race, then maybe we need to revisit the question of whether or not the country is ready for a black president. This is a FORMER PRESIDENT who was often called the 'first black president' , being attacked for being factual!

The Johnson/MLK comment was very subtle racism and they got caught. The implication was, "Smooth talking black guys are great for motivation, but you need a hard nosed politician to actually make policy". This was the box they were trying to put Obama in, and it backfired.

  • Posted By: drjunea @ 02/18/2008 9:20:00 AM

What is there about Obama to be enamored of?
Americans know how biased the press can be. Obama uses words because he has no previous actions to talk about. If the american people don't stop letting the press crown undeserving, inexperienced candidates then they deserve the consequences that will come. We have to have a president that has the knowledge, experience and connections to guide us out of this economic storm. Hillary is the only smart choice.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:07:13 PM

Hilary can't win. Her negatives are way too high amongst independents. If she gets the nomination, I'll vote for her. A screechy Democratic politician who votes whatever way she thinks will be most politically expedient, is still better than the best Republican. Go Obama!

  • Posted By: Richnanc @ 02/17/2008 1:30:13 PM

I think it is absurd how the press is intimidated by the Clinton machine. Only one slightly negative comment about Chelsea Clinton (made by David Shuster) put Shuster's entire job and future in jeopardy. Such is the power that we allow the Clintons to wield.....

    • Posted By: gata1296 @ 02/18/2008 3:05:24 PM

AFFILIATED---i agree with you wholeheartedly! they only judge obama on his speeches and totally ignore his detailed plans...moreover, they totally ignore the fact that he and clinton have similar policies wth minor differences. personally, i think the media has been fairer to the clintons....if the media was really after blood, they would give clinton and her supporters exactly what she is seeking--more coverage and more dirty laundry to air--whitewater, jigolo husband, tax returns, bribery and the list goes on.....the media is being quite gracious....i truly believe that no matter what obama says or does, some americans will always view him as lesser than. no doubt that same adage is plaguing clinton also, but to a lesser degree. ......

  • Posted By: drjunea @ 02/18/2008 9:32:50 AM

Americans must stop listening to the press and their OCD behavior with regard to Obama. The Clinton administration created 21 million jobs, balanced the budget with a sizeable surplus and weathered a press storm at the same time. Think!! What has Obama done to gain the reins of the american people. No, not what he promises! What has he done! Nothing! Americans must realize that he is backed by some very powerful people who have an agenda or many agendas. One of them is Ted Kennedy who came right out and said, I will finally see projects that I've worked on for 30 years get legislated! Hillary is the only smart choice for america. I hope people are wise enough not to buy into the media frenzi and vote for experience.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:05:07 PM

I do believe the press is obsessed with Obama. It looks to me like Obama rides the same tide of wink wink, nod nod campaigning that "W" rode to the White House. How unfortunate. The shiny object always gets more attention then form. I actually have heard a broadcast, at length, discussion about the Obama's holding hands. Huh??

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:03:24 PM

Except that Obama is massively brilliant and Bush is a dim bulb. Methinks you should avoid analogies.

While Mr. Thomas may be accurate about this history of presidential campaigns, Barack Obama is given an incredible pass by the media. Indeed, they seem to be pushing him over Hillary - constantly berating her while praising him at every turn. It has mystified me. It has gotten so bad, that I won't even watch Tim Russert, Chris Matthews and barely Keith Olberman - who I always felt was a fair news reporter.

    • Posted By: JDinOregon @ 02/18/2008 11:28:16 AM

placidgirl7: You lost credibility with your "Keith Olberman - who I always felt was a fair news reporter." For one thing he's never been a "news" reporter. He did sports (poorly) and then became a biased far left commentator. He has at times been known to froth at the mouth during severe BDS episodes. He's a joke with poor ratings. I have no idea why he is still on the air.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 3:00:36 PM

Olbermann is great and far from "far left". But you are right, he's not a reporter and has never claimed to be.

  • Posted By: jasoninpa10 @ 02/18/2008 9:45:10 AM

I used to enjoy the news: CNN, MSNBC, ABC. I simply cannot even tune in any longer. The obsession with Obama is so overdone that itliterally becomes grotesque at times. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I truly do believe that there is an attempt by the media to get him the nomination because he is the most beatable by the Republicans. I think we are going to see the media's attitude toward this "darling" to change dramatically and gradually if he gets nominated. His questionable ties, his dirty laundry is going to come out. If Clinton loses, it will absolutely be because of the media. But that's no surprise; it is the media who sold the Iraq war to the American people too.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 2:59:14 PM

Hilary's the most vulnerable against McCain. The polls show us this clearly. You have it backwards, and thus the whole premise of your post falls apart.

  • Posted By: drjunea @ 02/18/2008 9:45:22 AM

Has anyone considered the prospect that republicansmight be aiding the Obama surge? McCain has a much better chance up against Obama than he does against Hillary.

    • Posted By: Shepherd2729 @ 02/18/2008 11:40:58 AM

Right now, the Republican base is split. McCain does not have the support of the far right. If you want to solidify the Republicans and really motivate the Christian Right, all you have to do is nominate Hillary Clinton. Every conservative in the country will show up for any Rebublican nominee to ensure that she does not become president. I do not believe that she can win the general election, regardless of her position on any issue for the simple fact that she and the former president are despised by the Republican base. Like it or not, Obama has shown the ability to win over the Republican moderates. His support among minorities is high. In a general election between Obama and McCain, Obama gets the minorities and the majority of moderates, including some Republicans who want a new voice in Washington. McCain, having no real support from the Right, loses. Make it an Obama/Clinton ticket and you get the best of both worlds. The conservatives stay home because Hillary won't be president, moderates flock to the sound of a new voice, and Obama gets the benefit of having the Clinton's experience available to him when he is making decisions. If Hillary can keep her nose clean for 8 years, she gets the presidential nod in 2016 and probably wins, depending on how they handle the financial collapse that starts in 2012 due to the babyboomer retirements. I think too many people are trying to get their favorite player into the game and have forgotten how to strategize to win the game.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/18/2008 2:58:10 PM

Agreed. Spot on analysis. The cons want to run against Hilary because they know she'll motivate their base.
