Had I not grown up in Chicag and spent some 60 years following politics in New York and Chicago I might buy the reference to Mrs. Obama's work for the city of Chicago as *public service*. She had a political job; no shame in that but why not call it what it is. Now she makes over 300k working for the University of Chicago in some sort of public relations dealing with hospitals...really? Having worked in a large law firm, I also know why many people leave. No one gets anywhere in politics working for the corporate law firms; so the high minded *refusal to accept * big money and the need to do *public service* are not as lacking in self interest as the reporters might like it to appear. Had the article been less of a puff piece and more honest and direct about the reality of the Obama's life and their ambitions, it would have done great service to Mrs. Obama who has indeed been fortunate that this country provided such privleged outlets for her abilities.

Read the article and regard Mrs. Obama as a very driven and successful woman who made the most of her opportunities. But, 60 years experience in the world of politics and an understanding of Chicago politics causes me to question the high minded *public service* of either of the Obama's. Its is impossible that she had anything but a political job in Chicago and making 300k in public relations at the University of Chicago hospital while her husband is US Senator? Oh, dear, it makes me wonder just how much else is fantasy and fluff in this article.

They're inspiring the divide which they claim they want to break. It is soo obvious, why does everyone have fairydust in their eyes? Because someone says, Change or Change we can believe in? Many of us hate Bush, that's no reason to put someone with even less experience than him in office...we're at a more crucial time because of him...i'm not saying mccain is the answer, but it's not this man (Obama) who never served his country, how can he defend us? By words and good looks? Absolutely not!!

To americanagainstmarxism. If I was Obama's marketing agent I would have changed his name to something like Bubba Smith. Everybody knows a Bubba they love.

Half those scum terrorists who crashed into the Twin Towers had the name ' Hussein '. That name just has too many bad memories and connotations attached to it. Think about it. President Hussein. Saddam Hussein. Osama Bin Laden. Like, might as well say the US is one of the three Amigos. Man...too much.

    Dear hope 9999,

If you didn't have anything racist to say, then you don't have to walk on egg shells when you speak. If you have a good education and think before you speak, there is no issue. I take it that you have no close friends who are African-American, nor do you realize what most of them have been through on a daily basis. It has been a long 8 years, and I am more than excited for the world to see that a more educated America can get past racism for the first time in years and be part of a world of citizens, not races. Wanting better for yourself and trying to improve your community is not being racist. I'm sure there are many people in your circle of friends and family that say things that are disturbing at times. Have you been labelled as thinking just like them because you happen to know or be related to them? I have a brother who took drugs all his life and got in lots of trouble, yet no one thinks that I take drugs or get in trouble. Again, education, education, education...you should try it.

I would be proud and honored to have Mrs. Obama as first lady and President Obama leading our country. They care about where we are going as a nation and who has a seat at the table - much better than the greedy oil barons who currently occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and who didn't send their daughters to fight in Iraq.

At the ned of the day, she will play the race card. She is disingenouis, but smart, and STILL has a hangup with America.

You should be an African-American for only one day. But you can't. Aren't you lucky?

Dolores Fleming what do you mean by the "likes of her". Have you ever stopped to consider that this intelligent, out spoken African American may have a different view on how America has treated her than say.. a white woman? Believe it or not America has not always been kind to minorities. It's hard for the average white person to understand that not all Americans share their rosy apple pie version of the U.S. I'd rather have Michelle than a liar and corrupt woman like Hillary and her equally corrupt husband (oh yeah it will be a two for one deal) in the White House. NO MORE CLINTONS. If Obama does not get the nod I'll vote for McCain.

Her claim she isn't involved in the politics is, shall I say "hogwash". I feel it is people like her that is pivotal in straining race relations. She should be telling the black community what they can do, ie: she and Barack, instead of what they should be given because of their color. There are many black affluent people we can be and are proud of and these are the ones she should expound upon. If Barack doesn't want his wife criticized he should tell her to be quiet, after all, aren't they public figures now?

    swigerbunch,

YOUR racist views are coming through loud and clear. The reason their is a black history month, etc., is because for over a hundred years black have been treated as less than equal and even as less than human...if they are segregated and pull together as a race, we only have ourselves to blame for treating them that way to start.

And as them being racist as an etire group, that statement alone is racist. You're clearly oblivious to the hate going on in white America...hate groups have grown in record numbers over the past 8 years, and these are groups of WHITES. Obama is the one who's received numerous death threats from whites, and xenophones such as yourself only prove that white Americans are much more hateful than most other races in this country.

This is a wonderful piece on Michelle Obama. Very inspiring to me as a single mom. My blessing and my vote to Barack.

HarrietG - You must live in a very high class society. But here in the real world, African Americans have been brought up to hate, and America is becoming a place where the white person is a minority. What if we had white history month? or the white-american channel on cable? Would that be racist? Yes, it would. Therefore, don't assume that the white man is the only racist. In all truth, the African American is more racist than the white man for more reasons than I have space to list. Furthermore, look at your own comment. You make sure to capitalize "African American," but not "white." Maybe try using something like "Caucasian".

I am laughing out loud at your ignorance. Show me anywhere in the history books where children learn the truth about American History. Show me where they can find out about black inventors that has made this economy thrive the way it has. You can't and the only time African Americans can learn about this is during that one month a year. There is White TV it's just not named so in that way it called ABC, NBC, FOX, USA, TNT etc. Your comment generalizes an entire race of people. Did you know that there are white Africans as well!

Thank You (whoever that may be), for restoring my previous comments concerning Michelle Obama. The followup comment is obviously not completely accurate. The light violet lettering is still a real problem, is there some way for the commenttary being typed to be revised by the typee? Rereading and editing what has been typed would be improved immensely. Thanks

I just wasted 45 minutes posting a comment in letters that are nearly invisible on the screen, only to find out it apparently was vaporized because I did not have a username or password.
