    what a ridiculous article. first of all they have this foreign name guy as one of the authors, must be a serb. that's just plain vanilla hyping of the stock. why do i care to hear something about a problem from people who got bombed by us. of course they will say what we helped create will fail. like they say for iraq now. doesn't NW have impartial writers. also, the guys just expects us to believe them. sure there must be unemployment. i mean if these people all had jobs after decades of fighitng, than. man, i would want to be one of those supermen. of course they won't have jobs. how can they. so what the hell are these guys saying. nothing. i just know one thing, we humans just do not tolerate bondage. so oprressed people will always, in the end, get a way out. looks like kosovans did it. congrats.

    The Serbs own Kosovo and always have. These people declaring independence from Serbia are the scum of the earth. They are the bums, gypsies and crooks that had roamed the world looking for a place to steal by secession. Bill Clinton and the black caucus were totally wrong for sending warplanes to attack the Serbs in 1999 via the UN when the US was originally aiding the Christian Serbs in defense of the Muslims who had invaded their land. Bill Clinton then opened the door for the same Islamic terrorists that were trained FREE OF CHARGE in the US to fly the very planes that hit the World Trade Center buildings on 9-11-2001 .
    This is an outrage and when Kosovo fails myserably in the next couple of years, the Serbs must re-invade and re-take the land that has always belonged to them.

      Martin- its the EU that made this happen, considering that Slovakia is an EU member and since you feel that strongly about the issue, maybe you should start a EU secession campaign in Bratislava. Kosovo's independence is for Europe's greater good, completely justified and its the right decision.

        Absolutely disagree! You cannot make conclusions on any independence just because a nation is stubborn. The roots of this issue reach to 620 years in the past. And now someone who even does not belong to Europe and does not pay UN memberships and does not recognize UN laws violently change this history upside down and make decisions about the nations and do not know even their history. First you have to respect and recognize reasonable UN and international laws and then you can recognize someone's independence accordingly. Otherwise, any corner of the world may proclaim its independence without asking from now on and UN declaration can thus become a useless crap of paper.
        Imagine, that a neighbor came to your flat or house and claim part of your room his property. Or, more brutal imagination, imagine that at one morning you woke up in a different country and you can't do anything. How would you feel? Absolutely powerless. UN and international laws are to avoid such happenings and therefore claiming an independence has to follow some already declared rules agreed among all UN countries. Got it?

          The UN intervened on behalf of Albanians to stabilize the country and put an end to the oppressive Serb regime. It sounds like you just woke up, read the paper, saw an independence declaration and refused to go back and learn about the bloody makings of this young nation. The serbs, as a UN member, were bound to the UN rules concerning human rights, they broke them time and time again. UN sanctions, comparisons to the Nazis, milosevic/hitler, ethnic cleansing/holocaust, do you get it??? I don't think you ever will nor will you getting it will probably ever matter in the grand scheme of things. This independence intiative sidestepped the UN and it will succeed because of its support in Washington and Brussels. Any and all initiatives on behalf of Kosovar independence would have been vetoed by the russians, what the russians were doing was ignoring the UN's role in openly discussing the merits of the Kosovar right to self determination.

    For general info, Kosovo was not part of Serbia, because there was no Serbia to be part of: during most of the long Ottoman period, Serbia did not exist as an entity at all. Kosovo was annexed de facto by Serbia within living memory in 1912.

    The Serbian people certainly have no one to blame but themselves for kosovos freedom,after all it was the serbian agression that led to the whole demise of Yugoslavia,of their brutal policies of trying to eradicate the indeginous people of kosovo for so long, the albanian people suffered under the hands of serbian opression,the Albanians have now spoken for themselves and should enjoy their newfound freedom and
    the world should welcome their freedom open heartedly.

      the serbian people commited a lot of crimes in the past, so they have to pay.what about the uk and the us have they not commited a lot o crimes too?tell me where are the indians now?how many of them were massacred?what did people do in australia, what did your people did in canada?what did your people do in africa?serbs certainly have blood in their hands just like most people in our world.if you read history, you ll find out that britain has killed more people that any country in the world.so do we have to punish them too? no i do not think so, we people should build bridges instead of avaoiding to build them.tell me how many countries such as the US, the UK have lost theirs lands because of what they have done around the world? we should unite people instead of dividing them.no one is perfect.no one, the so called democratic countries are the same that had commited theworse crimes that the world has ever seen.who punished them?

        Serbia had 100 years of kosovo that should have been a sufficient amount of time for them to bulid bridges with albanians,so long serbia and the serbs, live in your own dammned serbia and blame no one but yourselves the world offers no pitty for you serbs.

    Kosovo is officially the world's 193rd state. Serbs and Russians can continue to make noise, but Kosovo's independence is almost a fact they have to deal now. Kosovo is a unique case which comes as a followup to Yugoslavia's breakup. It is not and won't be a dangerous precedent for other national movements that might ask secession. Kosovo's independence will ensure a stable and peaceful Balkans, finally. Anita, Albanian in the USA

    Give the Kosovo's people the chance to make their own life and future. If they fail, and I doubt, you and others will be right. On the other hand, as a few people mention here, let Serbia move on his path to a better future with Russia/Europe or by itself. Do not let the past hold a nation from the future.

It is not a dangerous precedent, it's just a unique case. Kosovo's independence is the ultimate solution to a stable and peaceful Balkans.

    You are the filth of this blogg and the nastiest of everyone - Serb or Albanian. If you do not have the patience to make a point, do not offend anyone. It seems your TV feed comes from Belgrade and you hardly watch CNN or EuroNews to see what some of your people have done to the Balkans, the attrocities that only matched Nazi's. In your lifetime, you will not see Kosovo become part of Serbia. But in case their leadership will follow the current path, the only place you will be able to visit will be Russia. And if you give up your US citizenship, you will have a chance to make a difference in Serbia for yourself. It is because of your "self proclaimed pseudo patriots" that Serbia does not progress. And it is unfortunate that a few people would keep a nation hostage. I wish to Serbian nation and the new Republic of Kosova good luck in the European family.

    When Tito (Josip Broz) died. All the national peoples that made up former Jugoslavia has lost their common sense of reason. Serbian nationaliism has cheated all the people of the region their right to coexist. Kosovo had no choice but to cleam its indipendence like the other republics of former Jugoslavia did.
