Where do all these Albanian accounts of history come from?? Your deluded if you believe you have been fleeced of land in the past. Your luck came in the form of the WEST that have chosen not to loose face even they they know its wrong to grant you independance. If you give Albanian enough rope they will hang themselves, it won't be long before you complain about minority right under the guise of a new land grab. Its in your nature, but tread carefully cause beggers can't be choosers..

In as much as i love America...it is the biggest crime ever what USA and it's allied europeans did to Yuguslavia, let alone what's going on now in KOSOVO.

President BUSH...you are an honest and honorable man, a man of true justice you must, I repeat: You must REVERT the situation in Kosovo. You can not possibly accord with what is going on. This is not a true Independence of a country or a state.
It is stealing a province a state from a Country. You can not possibly agree with this.

We over here implore you to interveve in this. Never mind what others will say. What allies will say. DO THE RIGHT THING! as is the commum sensable way of you. PLEASE!

What about in the years to come...someone decide to get California ou Florida out of mainland- United States of America. What about that, how will american people feel?

And, specially in the case of Kosovo...just because a foreign-ethinic group become bigger in their human-numbers is it a must that the original population must be robbed of their country? their land? their cultural, social, religous rights...??? and their very way-of-life?? i can not imagine what this exemple is going serve who? where...when.

And, please, look at the Why's this is happening and tuckle the real matter, not just simply steal part of a country from it's original inhabitants just because intolerant foreing ethinic majority can not get along ....anywhere...as matter of fact!

THIS IS THE BIGGEST CRIME in USA history...IT WILL HAVE TO PAY A HUGE PRICE...Someday, in the future. That what goes around come around.

Please, President BUSH intervene in this situation do not allow this happen to the Serbian people.

God Bless you and the Serbian people...we shall pray for you. Do not DISPAIR...if man's justice fail...the ABOVE JUSTICE IS WATCHING OVER YOU SERBIAN PEOPLE...and it will indeed come to you...please, do not dispair. We all cried for you. I am sorry United States of America is in this...and it is not much consolation for you! but we pray America will change it's mind and take another course. Not reconize this fake, false indepedence. Be not part of this crime. Help you serb people to have your whole country not part of it.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING.

This why i dont like these Clintons...all started with them...god do not allow them back in White House, much less Obama Hussein Barak.

We will pledge with God Serb people for God to help you. We pray for you.

It was not God's will but, america's will , that an independent KOCOBO has even been considered. Class thank the white devil for brainwashing the World. KOCOBO was, is, and always will be the poorest region in Europe. If it wasn't for Human and Drug trafficking the GDP of KOCOBO would be negative. Thanks to the the Albanian ultra facists, only a small minority mind you, just the radicals, the infrastructure of the region has been delapedated to a point where even the Wild West would be considered Luxurious compared to the armpit that now exists and borders albania. The people of yugoslavia paid for the Kosovars welfare and food from the 1950's to the break-up of the former yugoslavia. The people of that region have been a economic burden from Day ONE. The only thing that remains true, is that if not for American money being poured into Kosovo, I doubt running wated would even be available. Kosovars will be selling their family into slavery for food.

We spent five hundred years driving the Moslems out of Europe. Bush and NATO have no right to tear apart a sovereign nation and hand it to them on a platter. Hopefully the Russians will just turn off the gas pipelines and let them freeze until they remove their occupation army from Serbia and allow the Serbs to end the rebellion in Kosovo.

While you serbs was inviting how to start the fire in Carpats mountains, the Albanians gived to the Rome 4 pontiffs Saint Eleutherius, (175-189), Saint Caius, (283-296) and John IV (640-642) Clement XI (Gian Francesco Albani, b. 1649, 1700-21). Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeg (1405-68) until his death fought to ensure the freedom of his country in an epoch during which the Ottoman Turks threatened the entire West from the gates of Vienna (in a museum in that city to this day, Skenderbeg's helmet and his sword are still preserved). Skenderbeg was a highly educated man, (he knew five languages). He was a catholic, an extraordinary diplomat, and the originator of guerilla warfare. In 1461, Pius II (1405-64) had sought his help in the common fight against the Turkish enemy.

Please do not take the part United Estates of North America!
Comment: Let's wait and see what the United Estates of North America says. If they say O.K to a Kosovo independence well it is fine, but, then they should start returning all the Mexican Land (California, New Mexico, Los Angeles, etc) and also suppot the creation of a Gipsy Country. Let's wait and see what the democracy defenders says. We have to learn to be fair.

Wrong information you have about the "internal borders" ecpecialy for ex-Yugoslavia. Kosovo had the same institution rights like the other 6 republiks (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosna, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro), untill 1989, when Milosevic has come into the power and revoked all the rights for Kosovo with his tanks, airplanes and mass murderings. Even an 7 year old child can do a search on the internet and get those information. So, don't mass with informations bacause it seems that you are politicaly motivated against the albanians and Kosovo. One another things is why you are manipulating with number of fleeded serbs from Kosova and where did you get the suorce of that information? I think 200.000 is not a right number or I can manipulate the same thing like you did, let say 5.000. Im wondering why Nesweek has published such a poor article. I can write 10 of articles per day like this, manipulating, lying, and propoganding serbian heatures.

First of all GEZUAR DITEN E PAVARESISE KOSOVES (HAPPY INDIPENDENCE DAY TO KOSOVA) We are looking into the future of Kosova now it will have many challenges ahead but we have allways prevailed and achieved ou goals,We do not have to tell the world the history, the world knows about it hence if we have to look back into the history about 100 to 150 years why not go further into the history and tell the world where the sllavs came from which was the Carpathian regions and settled on the balkan penninsula they disrupted the peoples lives that were living there that was a hostle takeover of the ,mayby they can go back to their great-grandfathers lands in the Carpathian mountains. As far as Albania it has allways been a greater Albania. And Kosova will be one million times better of without serbia using all of its resources so believe me Kosova can and will run its own institutions without serbias shadow lingering over their shoulders serbia lost its servant since 1968 or at least that is when it started,So now serbia has a choice they can acsept INDIPENDENT STATE OF KOSOVA and be a good neighbor or they can leave the people of kosova to live in their democratic republic of KOSOVA..THANKS TO ALL YOU COMENTATORS THAT ARE SUPPORTING THE DECLARATION OF INDIPENDENCE OF KOSOVA LIVE LONG TUNGJATJETA

When thinking about recognition of Kosovo, world's political leaders should remember events that happened more than 100 hundred years ago in Balkans. Then Russia stood for rights of it's "brother nations" ,pushed for independence of the present day states in the Balkans. That was carried out for cost of hundreds of thousands of muslim civilian deaths and ethnic cleansing and suffering of millions more. So, Russia itself gave a precedent in Balkans for creation of new states, even incorporating large, nearly homogenous muslim regions in those states. Why is it's present day worries about creation of this new state? What Russia made to stop killings and torture of thousands of albanians by serbs, what was it's posision when bosnian serbs killed, raped, and tortured, hundreds of thousands of Bosnian muslim civilinas? Where did stay when serbs declared a republic within the territory of Croatia and then in Bosnia? Why they are defending rights of only one nation in Balkans? When talking about the independence of Kosovo, Russia only reminds for the "UN's position of non-violitang national borders", but in recent conflicts in former Yugoslavia Russia stayed silent for mass murders, ethnic cleansings, mass rapes, even genocides, maybe for them this are minor events, no UN responsibilities? This applies also for Russia itself, they nearly totally devastated the brakeaway republic of Chechnya, at the same time protecting the brakeaway republic of Pridnestrovye. So,russians repeatedly showed that human righs, minority rights mean nothing to them when the case is a non-ally nation, and at this point western states should -and I know will- show how they appreciate these democratic values, equal treatment for nations and creating balance in a region where powerful Russia stood only for rights of given nations, denying the right for others not just for an independent homeland, but even to survive or live in dignity in their homeland. Of course, albanians shoud deeply respect rights of minorities, in contrast to serbians which previously didn't. And here the international community should press for, as signs of the opposite situation emerged short after NATO liberated the province from then Milosevic-lead Yugoslavia. And for serbs, some are talking about separating some northern municipalities with serb majority, what about reaminig municipalities with albanian majority in Serbia, are they ready to exchange these territories?

All of this will bite Ivan in his ass, if someone would explain it to W. Then we could fund enough seperatist movements on Ivans ass that it'll be hard to see the bear for all of the fleas eating it.

I am genuinely impressed by the folks at Newsweek. Keeping the tradition of unbiased journalism alive by having a serbian reporter write on the future of Kosova (its not Kosovo any more love). As far as Russia goes, it shouldn't even be in the UN. Time will tell, but Kosovars never cease to amaze me.

Russia is impotent, backwards, and backsliding. I admire that Putin has dragged them up as far as he has, but he has failed to achieve lasting reforms. I can't figure out who is slower, a Slav or a Shia?

apologies, i meant ignorant, not retarded

  • Posted By: erionziu @ 02/18/2008 4:10:18 AM

There is my point proven by "emilmil" that this phony journalist hs been paid by the serbs to serve them by writing an article that is "well balanced" to serbs.
Bad things that happened in the past "emilmil", didn't come from a not well balanced article. They came from your beloved leader Milosevic and the rest of his criminals which Serbia still haven't denounce . No mainstream serb politician has come out to say : We did very bad things to Kosovar Albanians, therefore we should apologize a million times. If this thing has happened right after the Milosevic's fall then there might have been a chance that Kosova was still going to be within Serbia.
Serb politicians never did that though, because they never cared about albanian population. They are the same politicians of Milosevic's era. You can keep them and relinquish to them Serbia. They will definitely lead you towards East. Good luck
Serbs have a problem accepting the reality because they are taught the wrong history. Kosova was never Serbia. Kosova is not Serbia's cradle and all that crap.
Populations which come in a country or region as emigrants are not identified as autochthonous.
The same with the serbs that emigrated south, seven centuries ago, due to insuficiant resources to live on in their mother land, the now days Russia.
So...again on history 101 we learned that Kosova was never Serbia. It was given to Serbia after the II world war to create the big Yougoslavia as a Russian satellite state.
And I am sick of these other ignorants who try to compare Kosova-Serbia with India -Pakistan,or Cubans in Miami. Kosova's case is totally different you pumkin for brains. ,you smart wannabes .
Go learn some history before you try to post something on here.

  • Posted By: emilmil @ 02/18/2008 3:06:55 AM

As a Serb, I truly welcome writing in this manner. If there had been such well balanced articles in the past, some of the bad things that happened might have been avoided.

    • Posted By: TonyM @ 02/18/2008 3:17:39 AM

emil - articles did not stop Milosevic from burning Yugoslavia - the country used to be a model state under Tito. People like Milosevis and the extreme nationalism from the serbs whom he "inspired" were the cause of many wars, death and destruction. Let us hope better days will come for the region as a whole. By the way, I am Albanian from Albania. By looking back, neither Serbia or Kosova can move forward and the better they realize that, the better off they will be.

  • Posted By: rsgonner @ 02/17/2008 11:30:06 PM

Tony-Have you heard of the Skanderbeg SS Division? Populated by Albanian Kosovars who gladly followed Hitler. How about the "Greater Albania" established by the Nazis in the 1940's? How about the displacement of Jews, Slavs and Romany by that same "Greater Albania"? You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own history. Facts can be most inconvenient to ideology. Let us see if this new "Greater Albania" behaves any differently than the former.

    • Posted By: TonyM @ 02/18/2008 3:12:45 AM

History was not written on WWII. As said before, history of the albanians goes 1000s of years and injustice to the Albanias on Kosova was done by Russia when albanian land was carved out to become part of yugoslavia. Albanian land was considered turc land by Russia just because Albania was occupied by the Turcs. While a Greater Albania might or might not come to exist in our lifetime, all it matters that people in Kosova are able to live their lives as are the Serbs, Croations, Slovenians, Montenegrins. So, Rsgonner, history is writting itself and today it was a good day for history. Serbia should let Kosova go, they eventually will. It will help their cause to becoming part of a better Europe.

  • Posted By: erionziu @ 02/18/2008 2:59:25 AM

I don't even want to engage in a debate with some people here because it is a waste of time to try to tell the history of Kosova in a small fragment. Just one word to them who obviously have no clue or are trying to altrnate the history : Kosova's history is thousands of years previous to invaders that came from Russia. Today they are called Serbs.
As I said I am not going to engage in a debate, but what bothers me is that a serious paper as Newsweek has published such a shallow 2nd grade level article.
This moron journalist has no clue what freedom means. And this idiot , has no clue what freedom means to albanians in Kosova. This inbecil has no clue that it is Serbia 's fault for Kosova being the poorest region in Yougoslavia.
This pig that has been paid by serbs to write this article implies that albanians in Kosova should have stayed within Serbia to have a better economy because they can not govern themselves.
I know I am contradicting myself by saying that he has been paid by serbs and calling him inbecil at the same time ,I just needed to let some steam out. I needed to because this travestite ,has a reason to write this article. He's been paid by serbs to write an article to make the world believe that albanians are not good enough to govern for themselves, but they need Serbia to do that for them.
I'll tell you what you piece of garbage and whoever else that believes you: Albanians in Kosova and everywhere they are, are very capable of governing themselves. Also Albanians in Kosova will never exchange freedom for economic benefits . They will all fight and die then to be under Serbian rule again.
Before you portraying Kosova as a backward country in Europe you should read at least 3 pages of its history. Not the serbian history though, because that one starts only a thousand years ago. Once you read that ,you will understand why Kosova is at the current state, and also you will understand why Albanians will never give up freedom and allow Serbia rule them again.

Dear Mr. Cirjakovic and Mr. Nordland

With all due respect that me and my company have towards newsweek.com, I must say that your article is politically motivated and does not give any factual feedback from the field. Changes arising in Kosovo, after the last genocide, have been highly evaluated by the international community and are described as a good foundation for a new state in Balkans. The repression and the consequences of war, of course, are still present, (hopefully we will be able to forgive - but not forget), but that does not necessarily mean we are not politically mature and able to run our country.

It must of been clear to the readers that your will to reflect negative feedback goes beyond ethics of journalism and clearly states your position. One thing is for sure, there is no turning back, and we are looking forward to stable relations with your country.

Finally, let me answer to your question - "No, we will not fail"!

    Sincerely,

  • Posted By: adamckteh @ 02/18/2008 1:56:57 AM

The glories go to the top few and the majority people still suffering. I say independence does not solve anything at all; it may bring more troubles to the people.
India and Pakistan had several wars since independence. Are the problems resolved? What the peoples need is love.
    Peace!
