From the outset let me say this: congratulations Kosova on declaring your independence! Now let me deal with this article a little bit. Overall, it is a balanced article, but it builds its balance on some unwarranted implicit assumptions.
First, it says that Kosova will likely become a failed state due to its unemployment, crime and corruption. Does this mean that staying under the Serbian umbrella these problems would cease to exist? Serbia itself is plagued by the exact same problems, only on a grander scale given its larger size. The prime example of crime in Serbia was the assassination of its promising Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, in 2003. Plus, many other independent countries face similar challenges every day, but they are independent anyway.
Second, it says that Kosova will remain dependent on the EU for help. This is true, but so what? How many other independent countries in the area are already dependent on the EU for help? Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia itself depend on the EU already. No one is saying that these countries should not be independent for that very fact. Even under Serbia, the Kosovars would have to depend on the EU for help, but only as Serb citizens, rather than Kosovars.
Third, it suggests that Kosova will not be able to handle the issue related with its Serb minority. True, this will be a problem in the future, but it???s easier for the international community to provide protection to 200,000 Serbs in a small Kosova, than to provide protection to 2 million Kosovars in a large Serbia. Plus, Serbia has already proven itself to be an unfit shepherd of minorities in more than one case. And the world cannot forget that. The Kosovars should at least be given the benefit of the doubt vis-à-vis its Serb minority.
Fourth, the authors of the article should do a better job at analyzing Serbs???s claim that Kosovo is their ???Jerusalem.??? If it really was their Jerusalem, we would have seen Serbs outnumbering Ethnic Albanians there before the war of 1999. If Kosova was so close to the heart of Serbs, more of them should have made it their home. But the fact is that Kosova was never seen by Serbs as anything more than a ???robbed cow,??? expected to yield milk for the government in Belgrade, be it through its natural resources or through cheap and slave-like Albanian labor. One should ask: why did Serbia fight with Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia as well? Were these countries too the ???Jerusalem??? of Serbia? If so, Serbia must have had many Jerusalems, hence diminishing the very essence of such concept. Let us instead face it fair and square: Kosova was nothing but the final wagon to detach itself from the ill-fated Yugoslavian engine.
Finally, the authors of the article should realize that the EU has now 27 member states, not ???22??? as they claim. But perhaps, they are not counting some of the member states, which in their ???humble??? opinion are failed states.
