Kosovo was taken into yugoslavia by force, initially in early 1900's. it never belonged to Serbia, serbia never had popullation in Kosovo. All these claims taht 'kosovo is heart of erbia' are false and results of myths that serb government brainwashed its people with. Kosovo region was always popullated by albanians (dardans) way before serb/slavs migrated to that region from russia in late 5-7th century. the biggest claim serbs use that kosovo is 'theirs' is that they lost troops in battle with ottomans in that region - - - same like if US claimed Normandy or Japan due to the number of soldiers lost in that land. Kosovo was and never will be serbia.

and so you're saying that actually, we should all submit our countries to Italy, or Romania, maybe, since the Romans ruled this region even BC?

Such a stupidity I haven't read long time ago.
Who was against Ottomans in Kosovo battle 1389? Albanians? Of course not. St. Tzar Lazarus, the pillar of rigesness and piety.

Thank you Rod and Zoran, for finally posting a halfway balanced article on the Kosovo-Serbia relationship and situation in a major western publication. Hopefully someone reads it. I am still astounded by how the supposedly free western government/media presents its postion in terms of HOW to manage its role in a situation, in order to divert the public's attention away from having to explain WHY it took that particular role.

Although it will never be covered by mainstream US/western media, you touched on a very significant point on Kosovo's economy, namely its overwhelming involvement in organised crime and enormous role in the opium trade. We should all be asking ourselves what the US-UK-France motives were for sitting back and pulling the strings to escalate and rush this wreck we are now witnessing.

It would be keen to mention that the massacres in Kosovo were far from one sided in the late nineties. And that through much of the region's history since 1000AD, its majority has, in fact, been Serbian (or Turk occupation). Serbia's original mistake regarding Kosovo was to encourage greater Albanian immigration during the Yugoslav years. How could anyone NOT expect this mess?

This is very prejudical peace... "Kosovo's declaration of independence isn't likely to solve its many problems???or defuse tensions in the troubled Balkans..." this was stated for Slovenia as well which now is in EU and has a presidency there. Kosovo's indipendence is the first step to solving all problems in Kosovo as well as in Serbia starting form denacification of Serbia.

Before offending Slavic and Serbian women with the primitive comments unworthy of a decent human being, you should learn world history. Here I, a historian, who have taught in the USA schools for decades, offer to educate you, the lowbrows:
before the 6th century, the Balkans were colonized by the Slavs. A few Slavic states appeared on the territory of present day Serbia by the 7th century including the Slavic Serbian state in the North of present day Kosovo called Rashka (??ka zemija). During the formation of Slavic states they were gradually Christianized beginning in the time of Byzantine emperor Heraklius (610 - 641 AD) (?????????????????? in Greek) . Heraklius founded the Byzantine imperial dynasty that ruled for 100 years. By the middle of the 9th century a strong Slavic state was formed on the territory of Serbia including Kosovo. In the 9th century there was an intensive expansion of the Bulgars. In the 10th century Kosovo became part of the Bulgarian Kingdom under Bulgarian King Semyon the Great. But in 1018 the Bulgarian Kingdom was conquered by Byzantium and Kosovo including Rashka (??ka zemija) became part of the Byzantine Empire. By 1190 Kosovo and Metohija were recognized part of the Serbian Kingdom which became independent on Byzantium .Modern Kosovo became an integral part of Serbia in 1208.

In 1217 Stephan (The First Crowned) was crowned as a king of Serbia (including the present day Kosovo that became an integral part of Serbia). In 1219 the Serbian Orthodox Church was established. Three Orthodox episcopacies were formed on the territory of Kosovo. In the end of the 13th century the residence of the Serbian Metropolitan (Archbishop) was moved to Pech (?????????? in Serbian) in Kosovo. Kosovo became the religious, cultural and political center of Serbia. Vast lands in Metohija and western Kosovo were given to Serbian orthodox Church. Many Orthodox monasteries and churches were founded here. The most famous Orthodox monasteries and cathedrals were built in Metohija and Kosovo. Famous castles located in Kosovo, were used by Serbian kings as their residences.
During the reign of Stephan Dushan (1331 - 1355) , Serbia, including the territory of Kosovo, achieved its golden age. After Dushan's death Serbia was split into a few weakened kingdoms. In the 1360s Kosovo was divided between three princes as a result of the feudal wars, between Nikola Altomanovich, prince Lazarus and King Vukashin.
In 1371 the territory of Macedonia and south of Kosovo fell under the Turks when king Vukashin was defeated. Prince Lazarus tried to unite Serbia with the the help of the Orthodox Patriarch to face the Turks. But in 1389 the united Serbian Army was defeated by the outnumbered army of sultan Murada I in Kosovo, and prince Lazarus himself was killed. Serbia became an vassal state of the Ottoman Empire.

The present time separatist movement in Kosovo came into being in the time of World War II when the Albanians collaborated with Nazi Germany and fought WWII on the side of the Nazis. During this time the Albanians who fought in WWII on the side of Nazi Germany received the Nazi recognition as "the Great Albanian State". At this time the Nazis exterminated and ousted most of the Serbian population (400 000 Serbs) from Kosovo. Multitude of Albanians moved into the houses of those Serbs who were exterminated or fled Kosovo.
After WWII Tito counted on Albania joining Yugoslavia. In exchange for giving Kosovo to Albania he received about 400 000 refugees from Albania and moved them to Kosovo.
Tito, by agreement with Albania, did not allow the Serbs to return to Kosovo and just provided them with financial compensation. The borders between Albania and Yugoslavia were widely opened until march of 1949 and Tito did not take the census to calculate how many Albanians moved into Kosovo during this time. The Croatian Serbs did not receive the autonomy like the Kosovo Albanians in 1963. At this time the ration of Serbian population to Albanian was 1 to 9. According to the Constitution of Yugoslavia of 1974 Kosovo was an autonomous region and was part of the Socialist Republic of Serbia. According to the constitution Kosovo has equal rights with the Republic of Serbia.
In the 1970s repeated cases of intolerance towards the Serbs took place in Kosovo.
Between 1971 and 1981, when the census took place, 50,000 Serbs left Kosovo.
In 1981 mass disturbances took place that put a beginning to the so-called "Kosovo Intifada" which existed on the level of gangsterism and eventually brought about the events of the 90s and 2004.
Before the military actions of the 90s there were 1800 Orthodox cathedrals and monasteries, 200 of which date back to the times before the 14th century when the Serbian Patriarchate was established in 1346. During the military actions many Orthodox monasteries and temples were destroyed. Kosovo has become the Serbian Gilgotha.

    Sincerely Yours
    .

italogirl: if you are italina, please translate this immediately:
Quale legge divina, umana o europea abbiamo trasgredito?

Just be happy that Kosovo got its independence and stop pointing fingers!!! Kosovo belongs to Kosovars and not Serbs. Serbian people have mistreated the Kosovars for long enough and that had to stop at all costs. Kosovars are intelligent, civilized and brave people and that is the main reason why the world supports them. Wake up and accept the righteousness, the independence of Kosovo.

I am an Italian citizen. I have traveled and visited most of the former Yugoslavian countries. I was to Kosovo working for an international NGO during the war. My impression was that Albanians are one of the most civil and peace lover nations in Balkan. I can???t say that for Serbian. Their crimes were so barbaric that ward can???t imagine. Don???t forget what Serbian did against catholic Croatian. Serbian is fighting to build a great Serbian. Kosovo is not Serbia and never have been from the ancient. Serbian wants to mislead the international community. Is not about the religion people it is about freedom. Kosovars deserve to live free in their land. Kosovo have catholic also. Serbian burned Albanian Catholic churches during the war and they have done the same during the history. From the ancient they have burn Albanian catholic churches and build orthodox churches to eliminate catholic Albanians identity. Serbian should learn to live in peace and stop their criminal and violence. World is tired and need peace!
