Comment: Further more the new government must avoid the restoration of the Sacked Chief Justice as well as pushing for any changes in National Security Council which is headed by the President, or even starting any accountability process for at least a year.

Their main and only objective must be to provide the relief to poor of Pakistanis who are becoming poorer, by making any wrong move can derail the current situation back to square one and severely damage that party reputation.

Last but not least the west and specially the US must learn from its mistakes and should learn to work with who ever make the government, by favoring PPP over PML(N) they will not do any good to any one but might damage the reputation of PPP further.

The next few days are very crucial and will be the test of all those who claim to be patriotic politicians , and have the courage to emerge as "Win win" form any negotiations and converting pre-election promises into Action.

  • Posted By: Mansoor @ 02/19/2008 12:18:49 PM

Comment: Its also very important to note that there are issues on which PPP and PML (N) are far apart and their coalition seems not lasting for long. Benazir and PPP already voiced to work n cooperation with Musharraf but Nawaz Sharif will never agree to this,(unless Saudi Arabia play its role once again)

Who ever form the new government ,will have a daunting task ahead such as, by giving relief to poor masses in making sure the availability of basic necessities available at right time and right price.,

to improve the law in order situation and

to make Policies for continue economic growth and same time to take harsh decision such as raising the fuel prices which will in turn make things worst again.

The business community already shown their vote of confidence when Karachi Stock Exchange rose by 444 points on very first day after the election.

The newly elected government will must have patience to avoid head-on collision with the President as he still have the power of Article 58-2b in his hands and can dismiss any elected government.

    Comment: Independents.

First time many independent candidates emerge winner form this election and they can also play a king maker role if they join hand together, but this time they will be left alone if they try to blackmail.

    New Government.

The next few days will decide who will be given the chance but possibility is that President Musharraf will invite PPP to form the government and the possible candidate for the top job might be Amin Faheem .

If Nawaz Sharif manage to get back the support of wining PML (Q) members, it will not be possible for Musharraf to ignore him.

Since Nawaz and his brother both were bar from election they may opt to have Ishaq dar for playing the role of Abdullah Gul to Tuyab Erdogan. Later Shahbaz sharif may emerge after by-election as new Prime minister and Nawaz Sharif become Chief Minister of Punjab.

    Comment: Awami Naional Party(ANP)

Pushtoon are always labeled as extremists and sympathizer to Taliban but the firm lead of Awami National party (a moderate Pushtoon Nationalist party )is a proof that the perception of western media about Pakhtoons' is wrong too.

ANP is moderate, against terrorism and supportive to Karzai government(its leaders having personal relation with Karzai, and party founder buried there too). ANP is in a very strong position to form government in N.W.F.P where once pro Taliban party was in power for 5 years. This is another proof that the Pakistani nation which is labeled extremist, but its not, now the western and foreign media must project true picture loudly, as they did when Pro-Taliban got into power in 2002.

Comment: Tehrik Insaaf, and Jamaat e Islami

Both boycotted the election and surely cursing the time when they took this decision .They believed that elections will not be free and fair, but it turn out to be the fairest election of recent history in Pakistan

    MMA(cluster of religious parties)

In 2002 they had clean sweep in North west Frontier province (N.W.F.P) and were in coalition in Balochistan province , both bordering Afghanistan, and had reasonable share at Centre. This time they are completely washed out form the scene, even form their strong hold areas.

Religious parties never won a majority in any elections in the history of Pakistan and 2002 was their only best performance (may be the last) which was mainly due to American intervention in the region and in Afghanistan. It???s the foreign and western media which always make hype from nothing and label Pakistan as a Nation of extremist with out knowing that its not correct and by blowing this lie out of proportion always end up doing harm to moderates and benefit religious parties.

    Comment: Pakistan Muslim league (Quaid-e-Azam).(PML,Q)

Once called the KINGs' party, and ran its election campaign long before with the blessing of President Musharraf. Is now almost wiped out from the elections, and even all the expensive TV commercials could not save it form the disaster. The party president who was so confident to nominate next Prime minister but fail to win even from his home town. All the heavy weight of the party and 23 former ministers lost their seats, and this is another proof that elections were not rigged. But the credit goes to PML(Q), who got most of women members elected from its platform from open contest and even by defeating male candidates in their constituencies. However reports emerge that in many tribal areas of the country women were bar from voting.

    Comment: MQM

Once labeled purely ethnic party of Urdu speaking, became victorious as expected, especially when the Party leader is running the party from exile. Although no major upset happened in terms of winning all expected seat but in some areas of Karachi it faces tough fight, and lost few of its vote bank. Party leader Altaf Hussain was first to announced that he is willing to talk to any party for the sake of stability in Pakistan. Party fails to emerge as national party and it is due to its late entry (ie just 2 years ago) into national stage.

Comment: Pakistan Muslim league (Nawaz), who was almost wiped out in 2002 dubious elections , came out as one major position holders in centre and with clear win in the biggest province , and i have no hesitation to mention that Mr Nawaz is a lucky man, specially when he had very little time for his election campaign and at same time made major political blunders and shaky decisions such as "first boycotting the elections then a "U" turn to take part and again giving another sentimental statement for boycotting the elections immediately after the death of Benazir Bhotto, all this created confusion among party workers and put break on the momentum of PML(N) election campaign, his such unwise actions caused heavy damage and loss of important seats and costing him not becoming clear cut winner. However if he plays his card well and welcome PML(Q) elected members back in PML(N), he will be in a comfortable position to form his government in the centre too. At the same time he has to be bit flexible and not to act in hurry for insisting Musharafs' immediate removal (but only with house majority) and secondly restoration of Chief Justice. This is his time to prove himself the leader of united Muslim league and People of Pakistan.

    Comment: Overview of election.

The free fair and peaceful elections have proved that the situation in Pakistan is not bad, as always projected in western n foreign media in general, it is one of the main reasons for the low turn out , also the killing of Banazir Bhutto kept many away,. On the other hand the Pakistani media played a very important role by encouraging the masses to come out n vote and 45% turn out came out to be the best after 70s election.

    Pakistan Peoples Party(PPP)

Proved it self as the National party by winning seats in all provincial assemblies. Its in a comfortable position to form government in 2 out of 4 provinces.

PPP did fall short of expectation in getting more sympathy votes, as expected by many after the tragic death of its leader, which might be a due to the fact that Party workers are not comfortable with their new leader ship ,(father and the son) who had put the matured and loyal leadership in shadow. This might cause more split in PPP in near future and cracks might change into divisions. It will only be clear once PPP nominate its man for the top job.

With un official election results sofar have made the new scenario in Pakistan bit unclear with none of the party in clear lead to form government in centre . But it is very clear that Punjab (the biggest province by population) is under the control of Pakistan Muslim League , Nawaz ) (PML,N)and with their help PPP should be able to form government in centre too.

but let me start by saying that the out come of the election is the proof that all political parties must thank to President Musharraf for fulfilling his promises of free and fair elections, and local and international media and all those opposition leaders who raise doubts on him and at Election commission must admit and give them their due credit.

Comment: The results of Pakistan's elections are still coming in. But the trend is already clear. this is no upset for the discerning observer. This was coming. Musharraf asked for it. He has done untold damage to the country's constitution, economy and foreing relations. The country is in a mess. He should be made to answer for all the arbitrary and foolish steps has has taken during the past eight years, from getting Pakistan embroiled in a useless, unending war to mutilating the constitution, ruining the economy, turning Pakistan into something akin to a banana republic--or call it a mango republic if you like.
The elections also prove that the people are now fed up with the military-fedual-bureaucratic oligarchy that now rules the country.

Comment: Although the election results are still coming itn, it is clear that Musharraf's party andn loyalists are headinjg for a rout. It is time musharraf saw the writing on he wall and quit. He has done enough damage to the country's constitution, its economy and its foreign relations. The hapless Pakisanis cannot afford further damage.
But from his most recent statement, it seems that he is still hoping to dupe the forces heading for election victory by suggesting that he is 'ready to work with them.' Ready or not ready, his very election as president is illegal and illegitimate. Perhaps, in a last ditch effort at gaining legitimacy, he would try to take credit for a 'free and fair' election, but rest assured the results are going against him not because he did nothing to 'rig' the elections but despite it!
The results would come as no surprise to discerning observers.

Comment: Amazing, mind altering results: Not only Minister Ahmad, but even the head of his party(King's Party) Shujahat Husain have lost their seats. But the most upsets have taken place in the base of the Taliban. All but three of the pro Taliban candidates have lost their seats. But that would be not so amazing. Amazing is who they lost it to: to the most secular and progressive forces in the Pashtun areas. This is what I call an upset.

Comment: These elections have sort of contradicted the expections of everyone, within and outside Pakistan, and have turned out to be somewhat if not fully transparent. I was able to vote with no hastle and nuisance, in fact, the environment at the polling station was extremely friendly and individuals around were very motivated to get their views across. Lastly, the turn out itself wasn't as bad as I expected. But it most certainly varied for other areas in Pakistan.
