Comment: Comment: It is just swapping time. Like if you only sleep 6 hours a night for 50 years you lose that time at the end, say you die at 72 instead of 79. But you are old then and cant use these hours as well so you are better of using the extra two hours now while your young!

Do You Really Need Seven Hours of Sleep?
    Yep, you do.
Number one, I do not understand the sleep patterns as I have the same problem about Aspirin. One time we had this as the wonder drug that was the final drug for everything. However, the competitions and Bayer corporations produced more of the Aspirin. However, the world did no like this and came up with the, ???Aspirin creates the acidity and harms the stomach???. This created a lot of fuss and Bayer had a big loss to the corporations. . Then we have another scene. Many corporations tried and succeeded in proving that the acetylsalicylic acid, the Aspirin, is very good for the viscosity of the blood and produced in millions. Here we have now. The doctors tell us to take 25mg daily to avoid the heart problems, strokes etc. history repeats itself but this is ridiculous. We are talking about the health and medicines.
I know that some need 7 hours, some need more as they grow, and the sleep goes away.
In the end, it is rest you are talking. Not the hours of slip.
    I thank you

Comment: Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea also affect your sleep. You'd be surprised at the co-morbidities that are assicated with the two problems--cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sexual dysfunction, diabetes, obesity, retardation of the fetus in pregnant women who snore, metabloic disorders, even AD'HD in kids. Oral appliances are a new treatment option--I'd suggest talking to your dentist or going to www.htldental.com--good info there. A few of my co workers have oral appliances and are very pleased.

Comment: Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be causes of sleep loss. You'd be surprised at the co-morbidities associated with these two problems--cardiovascular disease, sexual dysfunction, hormone imbalances, obesity, diabetes, fetal retardation in pregnant mothers who snore, and even AD'HD in children. Dentists are now able to help manage the problem with oral appliances. Ask your dentist or go to www.htldental.com. Some good info there.

Comment: I've seen articles on how to maintain energetic and sharp everyday while keeping your sleep hours at a minimum. The article advocates the cycle theory of sleeping, which regards 1.5 hours as a complete cycle of sleep. If you adjust the duration of your sleep to be integral multiples of 1.5 hours, for example 3 hours, there will be rejuvenating effects.

Comment: Yes too much sleep does make be groggy in the am.I had Sleep Apnes which is a condition that a lot of americans have. Find-RX.com definately helped me with it online.. Check it out!

Also, what helps me fall asleep is the music I listen to from naturesounds.mobi

Comment: What I always wonder about that these articles never address is how much sleep is too much sleep and what negative effects too much sleep can have. I guess it's because that's not very relevant to the majority of Americans. But I never feel rested unless I get 12-14 hours of sleep, which is pretty much impossible to do even half the time. I've talked to a couple doctors and they just seem to think I don't really need that much sleep but don't offer any real solutions.

Comment: I am in the same situation as Leprakawn. I typically get about 5 - 6 hours of "good" sleep a night and have for the past 20 or so years. Blame it on the military I guess, and 15 plus years of service in the submarine force. Anyway, I wake every morning wishing I had more sleep, however, I function fine throughout the day and never seem to lack energy. I think that 8 plus hours of sleep would put me in "super hero" mode and I am not ready to live up to that expectation.

Comment: Two years ago I started having sleeping problems. I'd wake at 1 or 3 in the morning, and nothing I would do could let me slip back into much needed rest. I had friends who did the sleep clinic and some took a prescription, but I wanted to try something cheap, so I started exercising. Though I've lost weight, but that wasn't my goal, I sleep well.

It does mean sacrificing personal puttering around time. I used to come home and putter, snack, and basically meander until nightfall. The type of exercise I'm talking about are one that last an hour and a half, an hour weights and half an hour cardio, three or four times a week. I mean the kind that make you peel your gym off in the laundry room and shower immediately afterward.

We lead such sedentary lives now. My grandmother rode horseback until she reached her 70s. She was up and about from dawn to nightfall, and she slept like a baby; but I don't go near that in my profession. I know most sleep deprived sufferers have heard about the effects of rigorous exercise and getting a better night of rest, but I ignored it, for years. I've finaly resolved my sleep problems in a cheap way, and I feel great.

Comment: For roughly 9 years I have gotten an average of 5.75 hours of sleep each night (assuming, but should be close), and I do not typically feel as if I have not slept for one - three days.

Personally, I would like to be tested though.

Comment: I recently visited a Dr with a problem with severe headaches. As it so happens he is also an expert on sleep disorders. Since I also have problems sleeping he reccomended a Sleep Apnea test. He believes that it is my problem. What he failed to recognize, however, is that the reason I have trouble sleeping is due to a severe sinus problems that becomes more acute during the winter seaon. Sleep problems may not always be due to "Sleeplessness" but due to other circumstances that may keep you from getting enough sleep

Comment: I wish I could get at least 6 straight hours of sleep! I will go to bed really late like 1 am on a good night and then wake at 4 am, 5am, 6:30 am to get kids ready for school then I am usually up for the day. I have never been able to get myself to go to bed at a decent hour and even if I do I wake up a minimum of 4 times during the night. I have found that I tend to become ill easily, recently my doc found that I had 3 different infections bladder, kidney, and sinus all at once! I don't know if sleep had much to do with it, but I am sure lack of sleep didn't help! I am starting a prescription of sleeping pills to see if that helps, wish me luck!

Comment: I'm questinong the full 7-8 hours. My body doesn't seem to require it. I wake up after about 5 -6 and I feel great. I have no problems during the day and don't feel the need for a nap in the afternoon. I'm 47 and have recently lost 40 pounds and excercise daily. I would like to know if the weight and exercise play a part in really having to have the full 7-8 hours.

Comment: I would love to get 7 hours of sleep but my body just doesn't require it. I wake up after about 5 and I'm ready to get up and get going. I exercise daily and have recently lost 40 pounds and I feel great. Also turning 47 and slightly pre-menopausal my body is changing. I don't even feel a need for a nap in the afternoon. So I'm questioning the full 7-8 hours. CC, Idaho

Yes I think I need 7-8 hours at night. I have been thinking so much about this to know how many hours do I really need to sleep. Here it's if I sleep less than 7 hours it's like I have never slept and I cannot even do my work the first three hours in the morning.

Comment: The article could have gone a lot further in detailing what takes place while sleeping at night or under ???nighttime conditions.??? Nighttime conditions are very important as it applies to night workers, as the human body is conditioned to be sleeping at night, rather than during the day.

When sleeping at night, many major functions take place, not the least of which is growth. I tell young men (under 30) that they may never know just how long their tally whacker could have been as it only grows while sleeping at night. Also, parts of you could have grown at a disproportionate rate than others because of lack of proper sleep.

Comment: How many of these deaths were results of accidents rather than people being unhealthy from lack of sleep? I havent had a regular sleep schedule in more than 7 years. Ive gone from both extremes of sleeping 15 to 16 hours every day and also ive gone with 3 to 4 hours a night doing both for months at a time. I havent gained or lost a pound over it and my doctor couldnt tell you what i even look like because i have no reason to see one. So your study of a whole 22,000 people and 11,000 people really doesnt prove much. What about those who do everything by the books and still have health issues. I believe they made a movie about this called saw. If your tired are you more likely to get in an accident? sure but will getting to little sleep here and there hurt you? if you believe that then you will probably die from doing something really stupid before you die from lack of sleep.

I have a very poor memory, I always ache and became very depressed. The only way I can sleep more the 5 hours is to take NYQIL (double the dose) However when I wake up I am very drowsy.

Comment: I think, the duration of sleeping is depends on the person who feel rested after sleep and the duration is not fixed for every day, it's depends on his/her health, daily activities and the weather. I sleep 6 hours per day and I am normal, doing excercise every day morning.

Comment: I have 3 roommates, 2 of which, get in late (after midnight) and eat, watch tv, check emails, etc. before bed. Since I'm currently sleeping in the common area I have to wait for them to go to bed, which is usually anywhere between 2-4 in the morning, before I'm able to turn in. I have 2 jobs (got second one recently), work 12 hours a day, and have to be out of the house by 8am. I've been living here since the first of the month and haven't had a decent night sleep since i got here. Believe me, the sleep i get at night is nowhere near enough. My back hurts, i have constant headaches, im jittery, cranky, and cant focus. I'm thinking of getting a hotel room a few nights a week...

I often wonder if one really has to sacrifice something like his health and mortality because of financial problem that forces him to work harder than others... F*** US government, the tuition fee on foreign students is ridiculously high, and look at how they spend the money for war so that the leaders can escape crisis!

Comment: This kind of pisses me off. All through high school I took IB and AP classes and got a 3.5 GPA. I got a 1990 on my SAT. I was a 3 sport letterman and was involved in my community. I did a ton of community service. And yet I was rejected by an in-state college. I couldn't afford to go out of state so now I'm stuck at community college. I know for a fact that there are kids from out of the country that get into U.S. colleges with half the credentials I had. It's a load of B.S.
So don't you dare complain photonicee, appreciate what american tax dollars, what my parents and grandparents worked hard for, did for you.

I don't see how you can assume that he is rich, maybe his parents scrapped every last penny they had so he could go to school in the US and that's part of why he's complaining about it. Although I do think it's a little, well, rude, for lack of a better word, to say F*** the US government when you're a foreigner, obviously you have a country you could go back to, but I can't blame you too much, because you have to note he didn't say F*** the US, he said F*** the US GOVERNMENT, key word there... and I can't disagree to much there, hte government is F***ed

Comment: What Photonicee is "taking" is the opportunity to go to school in the US. The education that Photonicee is recieving in the US must be better than the education from his or her country, or Photonicee wouldn't be paying twice as much to recieve an education in the US.

            • Posted By: eleminty_cat @ 02/22/2008 9:43:06 PM

Comment: I don't know where photonicee is from, but it seems like you're assuming that US schools are automatically better, which is totally and completely not true. You want a good education? Go to Europe.

            • Posted By: LadyIman @ 02/22/2008 4:47:11 AM

Comment: Perhaps it is a better education, or perhaps an education that is not available in his country, perhaps in part due to "globalization" and the greater emphasis being placed on the English language. These and other options are certainly valid reasons for obtaining an American education. However, as I said before, the complaint was rooted in the problems of dorm life and the costs of an education in the US. I have paid and continue to pay such costs myself, being an American, from an American family, and having obtained an American education.

I also sympathize with anyone, American or not, who feels that the cost education is prohibitive and that life on campus can be annoying and counterproductive at best, and dangerous, as we have seen with the recent rash of college shootings, at worst.

Telling someone to "go back home" just because the US education system can be (it isn't always, but it can be) perilous, financial, physically, morally, etc., doesn't solve the problem and only creates an atmosphere of hatred. Besides, chances are, photonicee comes from one of those countries that was colonized by "someone" and raped of their resources and their own national pride, leading towards economic crises that ruined their abilities to provide education to their people.
They probably wanted their own "visitors" (read colonizers) to go back home, too, but it may have been too late for them to recover financially. Why not get a little retribution in the form of an education, eh? Maybe photonicee will take his education and try to improve the circumstances of his people. Ah, the blessings of globalization, eh? Give a little, get a little.
Oh, and it's "i before e, except after C, or when sounded as 'ay' in 'neighor' or 'weigh' " ---thus reCEIving.

Comment: Usually you get sleepy when you eat too many carbs. After you eay alot of carbs they break down into sugar overloading your body.

Comment: I have ALWAYS known that I need 8-9 hours of sleep to feel completely rested. I can function on 7. Anything less than that, I'm cranky and whiny like a little kid. Plus, I am a night person, so not a morning person. Could one have something to do with the other? Hmmm.....

Comment: I just read another research; 7 hours was the best, less or more was just as bad, so sleeping longer is not better either. And that i was "genetic" how much you need to sleep to feel rested.

Comment: I am one of those who fall into the sleep deprived category. I work a night job and take care of my kids during the day. I sleep about two hours in the morning on my couch (more or less leaving my kids unsupervised during that time), about two more hours during their nap time, and another two hours after my wife gets home in the evening. That is my routine. So that is a maximum of six hours of sleep I get during the week. I am constantly exhausted and know that I cannot keep this up forever. Luckily I have been able to function on this much sleep for about two years now, but in that time frame I have noticed that my short term memory has gotten worse and I am much more irritable than I used to be. It's obvious my wife and I need to find affordable day care so that I can return to living a normal lifestyle and getting the proper amount of sleep.

Comment: I heard that there is also a proper time to sleep (10 pm to 2 am). You ought to be sleep at these hours for these are the hours that your body replaces its cells, e.g. blood cells, etc.

Just like when you yawn at night, the tear in your eyes are helping you to get to bed.

Comment: Quantity and quality of sleep are questions that need to be asked by all healthcare providers. How many errant drivers are impaired by poor sleep? How many workplace accidents are caused by lack of sleep? The fact is, gray hair does not increase mortality, it's simply an indicator of an increased possibility of mortality. Generalizing that older citizens tend to naturally develop gray hair, the more aged we are, the higher the likelihood of death. (Sorry if this is too obvious.)

In the case of sleep, subjects divided into two groups according to their length of sleep is an easy and simple randomization and one that should have been done years ago. Length and quality of sleep could be indicators of stress or other issues, but the fact remains, doctors need to ask the question.

      Comment: Well said.

  • Posted By: _Drew_ @ 02/20/2008 12:17:28 PM

Comment: The study that is cited is flawed. It represents a correlation between mortality and sleep-length, not a causational relationship. Why are these people getting less sleep? Is it stress? If so, stress might be a stronger indicator of mortality than sleep. To say "the researchers concluded that lack of sleep increased mortality??? is like saying gray hair increases mortality.
Don't get me wrong, though. Sleep deprivation is harmful.

Comment: It is just swapping time. Like if you only sleep 6 hours a night for 50 years you lose that time at the end, say you die at 72 instead of 79. But you are old then and cant use these hours as well so you are better of using the extra two hours now while your young!

Comment: Finally NOW I get my 7-8 hours. My husband has sleep apnea, it would keep me up all night. Now I found something for him...and a little something for me from Find-RX.com We are much happier now, he has more energy and vigor in the morning. And I am thankful I can sleep through the night =)
