With her mom, Janet Leigh

It's a little discouraging to be a parent, because often your efforts don't get you to the goal. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. All of our best intentions with our children often don't lead to the result we want. But I still believe in the process and learned behavior and exampled behavior. Parents are your first role models. I am the mother of adopted children, and I wouldn't deny the nature side of it, but I look at who these children are, and I know who me and my husband are has a lot to do with it. And that is all nurture. Nurture with bumps.

A father's love of country

The man I called "Dad" for half a century adopted me when I was 3 years old. Even though he passed away two years ago, I still learn from his life and the example he set. It was from him that I first learned about duty and love of country. When I was 16, my parents and I visited the World War I battlefield of Verdun. Watching my father that day, I began to realize the depth of the words he lived by and what it meant that he was willing to die to preserve our country and her ideals. It is a moment I will never forget because it changed my life forever. A parent has tremendous power.
