Obamas legistlative record, personal history, character, judgement makes him much more experienced than any other candidate, especially the fact that he was raised in such diverse and cultural environments helps him to be able to identify and understand more people than Hillary or John McCain which makes him a better choice for president!! He has the right kind of experience and anything he doesn't know he'll have great advisors to help just like the other candidates will but I believe Obama has the better judgment to pick the right type of people to advise him and as we see, by the people Hillary picked to run her campaign, she just wont cut it!!! OBAMA O8!

"Obamas legistlative record, personal history, character, judgement makes him much more experienced than any other candidate"

Has gotten 3 bills passed out of 2000 that bare his name in full or part since become US Senator
Got elected Senator by having his opponent smeared via 4yr old sealed divorce papers
Aquired his mansion via a shady land deal with an even shadier mobster
Continues to do favors for the same mobster even today
Refuses to release visitor's log showing who\when\how many times he was visited by lobbyists
Key member of his campaign is still a lobbyist
Admitted drug user and small time dealer
Belongs to a church that places Blacks above other Christians
Prefers to vote 'present' rather than take a stand for his views\opinions

Yup. Gives me the warm fuzzies...

Obama is nothing but a bag of wind...I am not impressed! Talk is extremely cheap...Please be specific, Barack! Give me the experience and capability of Hilary Clinton.

  • Posted By: doesitreallymatter @ 02/21/2008 4:49:43 PM

    You know what?
With mainstream media (who are supposedly biased against Hillary Clinton) repeatedly calling Obama "Osama" we aren't going to have anything to argue about. We all should have known America would never, ever actually allow a black man in the White House.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 11:07:37 PM

Osama/Obama really what is the difference? From Obama's speech recently where I said his big plan to unify America was to get all the conservatives to "come over to our side" sounds less like a democracy and more like a uni-think like Islam.

  • Posted By: federalistpapers @ 02/21/2008 11:05:22 PM

You have hit the nail on the head..Obama is all talk and no substance.

  • Posted By: chandler @ 02/21/2008 5:45:35 PM

The people who say Obama is all talk and no substance obviously haven't done their homework!!!!! (Including the author of this article). He made HUGE strides in his work on the State Senate, and his website clearly explains his policy ideas and how to impliment them.

IF SAYING HE IS A GREAT SPEAKER IS HIS BIGGEST DOWNFALL, YOU MUST BE DESPERATE.
I expect more from Newsweek than an unresearched spin piece!

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 11:04:16 PM

Being a great speaker isn't his downfall. It is the lack of substance to what he says. Charismatic leaders promising CHANGE of an unspecified nature can be dangerous. These men can whip up a crowd into a frenzy with their words but what follows is change that isn't always pretty. Hitler was a man of charismatic character who promised CHANGE. So was Lenin, Stalin, Mao and others whose change is still impacting the world in evil ways. CHANGE to Socialism is what they preached as well!!!! OBAMA IS LEFT OF LENIN!!!

  • Posted By: jotabil @ 02/21/2008 6:42:14 PM

What matters in this election is some one with the right political will to move the country forward than the same old stuff. Clinton may have the ideas but lack the political will to implement them because of her deep involvement with special interest and lobbyist groups. Obama is free from them to do the nation's bid.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 10:58:59 PM

What does "move thiscountry forward" mean. Give it over to the same socialism that has failed in Europe, Canada, the Soviet Union etc.? FREEDOM requires citizens to take care of themselves. A nanny state coddles and keeps individuals from real growth. The welfare system breeds incompetents so why wish that on a larger scale in America.

Beware Obama! He's LEFT OF LENIN!!!

  • Posted By: feduo @ 02/21/2008 10:53:41 PM

It's not so amazing that so many can vote for someone who has accomplished so little when his record shows how little he cared to participate while being a Senator. After all he did study Nietzche in college and he definateley knows many people are like sheep.

  • Posted By: feduo @ 02/21/2008 10:34:05 PM

This is the best article I've read in ages. I also find it suspicious of Obamas "camp tramp" that when his wife was caught with her left wing panties down and Cindy McCain put her in place that NY Times tried to get to put McCain in a scandal. That is how that wordy crooner Obama got in the Senate in the first place by not 1 but 2 of his opponents having sex scandals. Well a word of warning Obama you're dealing with a class act in Mac and not the white trash the Democrats love.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 10:47:24 PM

But why isn't anyone looking into the claims by Sinclair about Obama, gay sex and cocaine? He has admitted to drug use in the past. Drugs are addictive and the last thing we need is a coke head for President. There should be a drug test. The Presidency is more important than some baseball game!

    VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!

    • Posted By: e_jay66 @ 02/20/2008 11:03:59 AM

I feel the same way. Its as if people are getting caught up in the moment. His supporters seem like colt followers that are somewhat brain washed and not looking at reality or the bigger picture. Its sad that us Democrates seem just like the Rep party when they elected Bush.
Someone needs to call out Obama and him using everyone else's words and punch lines. That slogan he uses of "Yes we Can", he actually got from Cesar Chavez during his movement of "Si se puede". This slogan is real big with in the Mexican community both here in the U.S. and in Mexico. Its used for different things such as: During the recent Immigration rally???s and protest, in Mexican politics over in Mexico, and both here & Mexico when the Mexican Soccer National team plays.
Most important EVERYONE should be outraged and disturbed with Michelle Obamas comment of "Her being proud as an American for the first time". Someone needs to let them know we are all proud Americans through both good and bad times.

Some of you republicans out there please tell me what kind of experience did king george have ???? Was he not penciled in as the next president before any of the primaries?I am tired of the same ole song and dance . I have had enough of the bush's and mccains of the world. About the only difference i can see between hillary and obama is Obama gives us middle class people some kind of hope for the future and Hillary comes off as just power hungry. Some one please tell me who the last elected president was that had any real experience. If it was not tricky dick chenney this blow hard never would have been elected.Just my personal thoughts.

I would like to say that I am a true democrat however I am considering voting for John McCain if Barack Obama gets the nomination. I understand that people have been swept away by his rhetoric and believe that he is a decent person, however, he is not prepared to deal with the global issues of today. He is naive when it comes to understanding how things in Washington are done. Jimmy Carter had the same problem and I love Jimmy Carter but he couldnt play with the big dogs when push came to shove.
I truly hope people will realize that although Hillary has some drawbacks she at least is in touch with how to play the Washington political games and will be able to help us get through the trying times we have coming our way. If people dont realize it then I believe we will have another republican president , one that will keep us in Iraq and perhaps even get us in a conflict with Iran. There is no choice if the choice is Barack Obama or John McCain.

Obama has no experience and no ral way of enacting the change he wants to enact. His only real political weapon is his speech making ability and even that will eventually get old and boring. I agree with the person that said that Obama is a phony. He's been doing as much as possible in as little time as possible to run for President. I want someone from Arkansas to tell me how he did in the two years he was a JUNIOR Senator for that State. The only reason Barack Obama is being taken seriously is because he's a good speaker with the right message at the right time. We're just getting out of George W. Bush's ridiculous and fake presidency and the people he's running against are Hillary Clinton and John McCain, two very established figures in politics. Clinton's problem is that she's a Clinton and McCain's is that he's a Republican. Obama will not be President because of his own qualifications, experience, or abilities, but because of his serpentine, albeit incredible, tongue and the fact that the other two though more qualified and much better choices, are just that. They are qualified because of their experience and that means they've been around so long people don't think they can make the change the way Obama can, even though Obama can't do it either.

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

I've spent time around many state senates. None of them come close to preparing someone to lead the nation and deal with the day-to-day necessities of GOVERNING. Obama doesn't have a clue what that entails. If Obama is elected, we might as well clean out my city, NYC, because Obama sitting in the White House will be an invitation for terrorists around the world to hit us and hit us hard. He's an empty suit talker. Obama talks about doing things and changing things but sure doesn't want to tell us how he's gonna do it. He's a snake oil salesman and nothing more. Wake up.

There is aways a choice! You could choose not to vote or write in a candidate. And stop lying to people that you are a true Democrat. You are a Independent registered as a Democrat and you don't want to vote for a black man to be president. Admit it and it will set you free. See there is nothing wrong with that if that's the way that it is, just be honest about it. If you don't like the choices before you, do something about. Campaign for Huckabee; try to ressurect John Edwards' campaign; Get Al Gore to come out of retirement. But as it stands, the three most likely candidates are Clinton, McCain and Obama. Chances are that one of them WILL be the next president. They have beat everyone else. Funny thing this republic of ours.

Hillary need to win some primaries. You can't win by wishing; you've go to work. Obama and his people have out worked, outfought and out organized the Clinton machine to date. It's put up or shut time. I don't see much rhetoric, I just see results like double digit primary wins. Go figure

All speeches are words and no candidate can truly promise us anything if they cannot guarantee that tomorrow will come. This experience jargon is an excuse for communicating that you do not like Obama, well you can vote for Hillary or McCain. You should not distort truth to suit your purpose or influence others to go dowm with you but your will. Barack Obama is as good as any candidate running for office, he meets the criteria, he is a constitutional lawyer, his experiences are different from Hillary's and McCains like any other official so too many people are arguing about what is inevitable. Every human is different from the other! I am afraid that people are so biased about Barck that they will vote for more of athe same and our economy, our way of life, our environment, and our sanity cannot take much more. As long as there is life we should have HOPE. or we select despair, doom and destruction. All those Hope nay sayers are WRONG. Does Albert Gore, Jr. really think that rich white politicians are going to increase welfare benefits for poor Caucasians, the larglest benefactor of these funds? Finally, poor Caucasians see they have been reduced to the level of people of color, and this is the group to most like inflence the outcome of the November election. Having removed their blinders, the working poor realizes that they are not middle class, their jobs are off-shore, the rich do not care about there well being, we cannot afford to maintain good diets/education/transporttion/housing/dental and health care/ and cannot spend the money of the RICH AND FAMOUS.

Please give us Barack Obama, because he at least promises to listen and help us make needed changes in America. He cannot do anything alone and we will let him. We want to strive not just survive.

The voters of this great nation need to realize that one man in the executive branch of government can't change anything without the consent of the Congress. This is what our founding fathers set up. He is saying he will change this and that but will Congress go along? I fear an Obama presidency is a 1970s Carter redux.

Aren't you supposed to know something about the cost of things? Remember how you insisted repeatedly that the cost of Iraq was no big deal? Joseph Stigliz, who you may remember as a Nobel prize winner, says the real cost is $3 trillion.R (Excerpt from the time article below)

I really wish you would occassionally know what you were talking about. Otherwise, I wish you would just go away.
"The real cost of the Iraq war
Posted by Barbara Kiviat | Comments (0) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This
The Nobel-Prize-winning economist Joe Stiglitz, who is a professor up at Columbia University, swung by the office this morning for a meet-and-greet. Noble-Prize-winning... must be a nice way to be introduced.

Stiglitz was here to promote his soon-to-be-published book on the true cost of the Iraq war, which he and Linda Bilmes of Harvard University put at $3 trillion. This is a little bit higher than what some other people have said in the past. In fact, it???s nearly a trillion dollars more than what Stiglitz and Bilmes themselves were saying not much more than a year ago.
The figure is so big because Stiglitz and Bilmes don???t just count operating costs ??? like the $12.5 billion a month is takes to run the war on the ground ??? but long-term expenditures, too. They tally up things like how much money the government will have to spend taking care of disabled veterans, what the war has done to the price of oil, and the cost of replacing military equipment that is wearing out much faster than it would have otherwise.
It???s kind of gloomy stuff. But the biggest shock is how hard it was for Stiglitz and Bilmes to find and get access to all the data, considering that war is a taxpayer expense. The two academics have been filing Freedom of Information Act requests for years.
My guess is that you???ll start reading more about all of this in the op-ed pages in about a week, when the book comes out. In the meantime, if you want an eight-page overview that???s a little dated, but will still make it sound like you???ve read the book, check out the paper Stiglitz and Bilmes wrote in the Milken Institute Review in 2006. You can find it here, as a PDF."

What you fail to realize is that while some (not all, as you imply) of his policies may be "boilerplate," none has ever been successfully tried. The strength that Obama can bring to the Executive branch is the hope of true bipartisanship. What Chris Matthews referred to last night as the 65% majority, not the 51% that dooms passed policies to fail right out of the gate. Obama is right when he says that Washington is where good ideas go to die. That is where change is needed - it's not tthe ideas, it's the method of implementation. His tuition tax credit for instance is not the same "vote for me & I'll cut your tuition" approach, but rather includes public service to "pay" for that credit. This has been successful in Europe for years, and it's about time the idea of public service as a civic duty came back back into American life. These ideas, attempted by Clinton or McCain are doomed to fail because of the animus of the opposing parties. There are very few Republicans who would cross the aisle for her and even fewer Democrats who would cross for McCain.
Let me be even clearer: I am 48, making over $150K, white, male, and a veteran who served in the Navy during some tense times with Lybia and the Iranian hostage crisis (I served aboard the Nimitz, in Jimmy Carter's Navy, when Ross Perot showed us how a covert rescue mission is launched). I have NEVER in my life voted democrat. Until now. The past 20 years have been a modern day Stuart-Tudor dynasty fight and the stalemate must end now.

    • Posted By: NYC1973 @ 02/21/2008 10:39:21 PM

Obama's chances of bringing bipartisanship to Washington are zero. I would expect that someone of your experience would be a little better grounded in reality. Get your heads out of the clouds and see what most of us see -- a man built out of hype and little more. Is Hillary Clinton great? No. Is John McCain the best America has to offer? Far from it. Is Barry Obama better than either of them? In the realm of speaking with a silver, snake oiled tongue? Oh yeah. Is Obama the best choice for president? for commander-in-chief? for setting a legislative agenda that will actually make sense in the real world? No way in Hades....

We threw our best candidate, Mitt Romney, overboard. Now we're stuck with three degrees of windbags (aka senators). Given who we have to choose from, Clinton and McCain are heads and shoulders above Obama. He is nothing more than a glorified state senator.

  • Posted By: Newcomer @ 02/21/2008 10:23:53 PM

  • Posted By: Newcomer @ 02/21/2008 10:17:53 PM

As I have said in the past Obama doesn't have the knowhow yet to be President. As VP he will gain that and in the year 2016 he will then be President. He needs to team up with Clinton now and beat Mccain. There will be a GOP President if these two can't get it together in the right order. No matter how appealing Obama is right now. It isn't the right time.

    Beware America!

  • Posted By: colam @ 02/21/2008 9:07:07 PM

Listen to you guys! All the ones who dislike Obama are so fearful of change, so full of the boogey man. Better to have a man half in the grave and 3 steps from Alzheimer's with a hairtrigger temper and his finger on the "button"? Give me a break.

No one is perfect, but Obama's rhetoric and his votes match--and they mostly fall on the side of the underdog, the average american, and the little guy.
The best news in this whole election is that most americans have finally awakened and realized that the press isn't liberal, or conservative--its just stupid and its writers, like the above, are ignorant. What is pissing the press off is that people are listenting to the candidate and not the press. That's what really irritates them.

Be fearful if you want. I have watched this country squander decades of moral capital, bloodlet our young to fight a war over oil, lie about it, while the press rolls over and plays dead out of fear of not being "patriotic enough" and then systematically destroy our constitution w/nary a peep from the populace--most likely because most of the populace is not affected (or believes they are not affected) by the erosion of civil rights

I for one look forward to being governed by a president who has actually READ and understands the constitution he is supposed to protect and defend.

How come ayone that doensn't agree with Obama's message is automatically ignorant, stupid, fearful of change, or against hope? The reason Obama is having the impat he is, is because of the totally crappy job Bush has done with his 8 years. Would you be singing the same tune if this was the 2000 election. History shows that Gore won the popular vote, wasn't he the same ole style politician as Clintion.. if you research your polls from that time.. Clinton would have won re-election if he would have been allowed to run. Most Obama supporters say they could never vote for Hillary but how many of you voted for Bill in 96?
Why is everyone that doesn't see eye to eye with you ignorant? People come from all walks of life and have many different opinions are they all stupid and narrow minded because you don't agree with them? If you say yes... then your ingaging in the same kind of politics that has plagued the country for the last 50 years. You are part of the problem. Isn't Obama's message that you love so much, to ring everyone together.. to bring all ideas together and see if we can't come to a comprimise... obviously if you were in washingon.. you'd be part of the clique that would have nothing to do with him... and you say he is your candidate.
If you really believed in the New Politics that Obama preaches, shouldn't you be debating the positive instead of just trying to tell everyone how crappy McCain, Hillary and Bush is?
You wonder why everyone can't see as clearly as you... well there a lot of people that are judging Obama by his actions as well as the actions of his supporters... and they just don't stack up.

Dems for McCain!! (Only if Big Hill isn't running)

You're delusional. Obama's votes (the few times he bothered to show up in the Senate) are essentially socialist down the line. His votes show that he wants to redistribute income from the workers to the retired and government bureaucrats. He wants America to cozy up to the Marxist-leftovers of the world. He wants to suck America's vibrancy dry. Obama's ideas are 100 years OUT OF DATE. He is speaking in the language of Marx, mingled with MLK, and promising utopia... while planning nothing more than handouts to the people he wishes to enslave under the yoke of governmental tyranny. Wake up. Obama is a snake oil salesman and nothing more.

This whole campaign is like watching the Music Man on a tragically grand scale. I just hope the country wakes up before we realize we've been bamboozled by a silver-tongued snake.

very well writtten, and hopefully an eye opener for all who are mesmerized by an eloquent speaker and snake oil salesmen. By the way, whatever happened to the middle name Husein? Do we really want a Husein to run this country?

Yes. Obama could be a fraud. He could very well be the meth of the political pundits, or... he coould be the real deal. What if we're just so used to seeing frauds, and phonies dressed up in politica rhetoric that we can no longer recognize the real thing when it comes along. robert samuleson says that with Clinton, and McCain he knows exactly what he's getting. So do I, which is precisely why I'm voting for Obama. Call it a leap of faith, a gut instinct, or just a desire for less, of more of the same. It's time. Not because obama is black, but because he actually inspires people to be better than they are. And what's wrong with that?

    • Posted By: NYC1973 @ 02/21/2008 9:36:59 PM

Inspiring people is not THE job of the president. It is a part of it -- really, a very minor part. Governing, making decisions that are informed and framed in REALITY (I know, it's a bad word in the world of Obama lemmings) and telling people stuff they don't want to hear -- that's called leadership with integrity. Obama knows no such concept. His words are, if you boil them down, lies.

If you look beyond the inspirational chatter, you'll see that Obama is nothing more than hot air... blowing the same old socialist ideas with the same old utopian rhetoric. This isn't American Idol. This is an election for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

It's about time someone is seing through Mr. Obama. He is talk and no substance. he is changing nothing. He is only running on that he is black.

    • Posted By: saukgal @ 02/20/2008 11:44:10 AM

I have been following Obama since he ran for the Illinois Senate and he has never emphasized his race and by the way he is biracial his mom is white and while you may disagree with him or think he needs more experience he is not a race baiter he has really sought to unite people. I think you are totally off track with these comments and have no evidence to back up your statements.

His idea of "unite people" is to get all conservatives and Republicans to come over to his way of thinking. Now that's democratic isn't it? My way or the highway.

What does that mean? "He is only running on that he is Black?" He could be purple and still not do any worse than George Bush has done in the last eight years. At least Obama is trying to unite people in this country. George Bush acted as if half of the country didn't exist...and it wasn't just the "Black half." It's funny to me how so many people can see "the real truth about Obama" while saying at the same time that he doesn't have much of a record to be judged on. People are scratching to find dirt on him and all they can come up with is plagarism. The man is almost completly transparent. He wrote a book telling all his business before the dirt digging scum had a chance to find it. Yeah, that's talk and no substance all right.
It was George Bush's inexperience with Foreign Policy that got us in this never ending war in the first place, the only reason he and many others want to keep it going is because they don't have any of their relatives dying in it.

Are you so sure he can't do worse than George Bush. It is popular to hate George Bush, but he has kept us safe from terrorists these 7 years since 9/11 and given America one of its greatest periods of prosperity. Yup!!! I can be a lot worse and Obama, if elected, will show you how!!!

        Beware Amrica!

    • Posted By: mama4obama @ 02/20/2008 10:36:10 AM

I don't agree with you. He may be black but that isn't an issue HE is pressing. He wants changes for all middle class Americans. The only substance McCain has is Bush politics.

      • Posted By: retiredGIguy @ 02/20/2008 11:19:06 AM

Whoa mama4obama. Did I hear you say the only substance McCain has is Bush politics? What substance does Bush politics hold? I must've been in a coma these last 7 years if there is any substance to be found in "Bush politics." Lack of substance would've been a more accurate description. Go Obama!!

He isn't black. "Biracial", "multiracial" are legitimate census classifications. People of mixed heritage pushed for those classifications. Obama has little in common with black Americans.

          • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 9:27:43 PM

Right now it is convenient for Obama to be black so we won't be seeing him with any pictures of his white momma from Kansas any times soon.

    • Posted By: pickwick @ 02/20/2008 2:39:45 PM

okay, he is running on his blackness is it? I have read through these moronic comments about Obama, being compared to Hitler, a terrorist, a racsist, and all I realize or get out of it is just what I thought I would. America is still and will always be full of rascists, they wan't to see a white old face in the White House, preferabley a man. I am so sick of the black vs. white crap, the last time I checked we are all humans trying to survive, that is it,let us do it together, enough is enough.(oops I plagerized Obama!) I just like him he is different from what we are used to seeing, he seems straightforward, decent and wise.Blackness? Who cares the colour for goodness sake, let's get on with it. PEACE and LOVE
