Obama has not shyed away from any question asked. no question. His life is an open book. He has proven he not short on words because already at his young age, he has written 2 books. Which most Presidents do once they are President. Obama will give you an asnwer on all the social issues you mentioned in you article & your proposed solution is how you would handle it. However you are not running for President, nor have the the education or background of Obama so I would rather follow - as you would say-his rhetoric- before I would follow yours. You sound like a Barak hater. The facts are in everyones face. When this country was thought to be under attack americans' pulled together of every race. We stood behind George Bush because we thought we should be scared to death. We only stand together in the face of fear? why is that the only reason why everyone should feel we are all in this together. Why is the message one America only valid when we are scared? Why can't we be one America in all aspects of the American Dream, not just to stand behind the military. Were you writing articles saying that George Bush was full of rhetoric when you found out that there were no weapons of mass destruction? Hope & change for something better than what we have been receiving is what his message is & contrary to your article the people have spoken & are still speaking. Barak offers the most change to the status quo. His very presence alone is a change of the status quo. I think that is what what people like yourself are scared of. Barak is the truth. Hillary lied before she even received the presidential nomination. Hillary along with Obama & Edwards agreed that they would not run in Michigan & did not want to be put on ticket because of demorcratic party rules. Everyone kept their word except Hillary, she ended up on the ballot. I wonder how that happened? The only conclusion is you cannot trust her word & already we have an example. Barak is the truth & the world is speaking out loud. I am insulted that the status quo would think that the only people capable of running the most powerful country in the world for the last 20 years come distinctly from 2 families. that is arrogance at it's finest & mr. obama's ideas are the best option for the world to move forward & to re establish the repsect that us once had. yeah everyone loves us, because they are scared of us. That is not a way to live & surivive. every superpower civilization that got so consumed with military, power & greed has fallen. it is time for a big change & we cannot get a real change until there is new blood in the White House. Mr. Obama is the ultimate Choice.

Why won't Obama release his visitor's log, showing when lobbyists visited him? Why wouldn't Obama discuss his relationship with the Chicago mobster and the purchase of his mansion?

Why won't Obama clear up the allegations of Larry Sinclair on gay sex and cocaine use?

So when Mr. Obama in an interview said he was committed to completing his term as Senator and then announced three months later he was running for president. was he telling the truth?? Or is the truth for him different?

Once again in this election cycle, the media comes out with too little, too late to make a difference. Where were all these insights into the blank that is Obama? Where was the discussion about his policies--or lack of them? Once again, the American media has been bedazzled--and forgotten how to actually report facts, rather than repeat rhetoric. Murrow would be ashamed--and rightly so.

This comment is in response to vpad. I hope you took time out to re-examine what you wrote. The problem with democrats like you is, you lack loyalty to your party. It's amazing to me that rather than vote for a Black man for president, you would rather vote for a republican or not at all. That's the problem with America.. I respect Obama, Hillary and McCain. It takes a lot to even run for president. Do you think that the republicans are not going to go to the polls because McCain will eventually be the republican nominee? Of course not.

Make no mistake about it, not all republicans like McCain or his agenda, but that will not stop them from voting for him. They would rather see any type of republican as president before they vote democratic.

You would have to be completely stuck on stupid if you think that Sen Obama is just speaking to the hearts of americans. " I believe as an American it's quite embarrassing that the majority would elect/vote for someone who speaks to your heart instead of someone who speaks to your head. " I can tell by your statement that you haven't done your research, you are just listening to the media. Wake up my friend, I think you are still asleep from the 8 years of Bush. It's also amazing to me how little credit people actually want to give Sen Obama. Whether you like him or not, don't make the mistake of underestimating him.

Just for the record; no presidential candidate has ever had any experience being president . The closest thing to experience is having been the vice president for 4 years. Being in the senate doesn't give you experience in the white house. Yes Hillary has challenged the republicans, but do you honestly think that Obama can do any worst that George W.? I don't think so... As far as your comment that to have Obama as president is a scary thought; to not have him is an even scarier thought! These 3rd world countries are not going to respect Hillary as our leader nor the United States... Here's a message to all of you democrats that would rather McCain get into the white house rather than to vote for sen Obama:

If you are stupid enough to let bigotry control your logic instead of common sense, then don't complain about president McCain when things really get bad because you brought it on yourselves... As for myself, I'm a republican so go ahead and don't vote for Obama, we love idiots like you, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Here's a tip: Please get others to think like you so that we can get McCain into the white house because of fickle democrats like yourself he will win and we will have you democrats to thank for it because you don't have sense enough to get behind you nominee no matter who it is! Now I know how someone like George W. lasted 8 years, because of idiots, oops! I mean intelligent people like you. Thanks again for giving McCain 4 years.

You are right on. Bigotry gave us John McCain as a Presidential candidate. Huckabee and his ministerial minions managed to damage the great Mitt Romney with their hate filled anti push polls and mistifs. Romney was significantly ahead in the polls and appealed to all of you conservatives that a vote for Huckabee was a vote for McCain. You bought him. You got him. You made your bed now sleep in it. If Huckabee is VP the Republicans will loose. See why at the attached website.

The point is whether a relative newcomer can be president. If the man were Caucasian, would you say yes, Mr. Samuelson? He's just as experienced and young as Mr. Clinton was, or JFK for that matter. This seems to me to be a case where the person of color is held to a higher standard than previous Caucasian aspirers to the presidency. I thought this kind of attitude was dying out. Apparently not.

Guess we are bringing out the racist crap again...if 95% of the Blacks voted for Obama...wonder who the racists are?

      • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 9:11:20 PM

Blacks are the racists when they overwhelmingly voted for Obama it was obviously a color ploy. I do not believe one refuse to vote for a man because he is black. I ALSO FEEL THAT ONE SHOULD NOT VOTE FOR A MAN BECAUSE HE IS BLACK!!! Obama has left his white Momma in the dust after she raised him you would think he would have good things to say about whites rather than pledging allegiance to Africa in his "hate whitie" church. Look up the trinity website.

Barack Obama's idea of change sounds a lot like socialism mixed with populist rhetoric. Um, I think that went out with the hoola hoop. Try again Obama. And, while you're re-thinking your awful ideas, try using some of your own original material. I'm sure the fine governor of Massachusetts would like to get his stolen campaign back. Is it any wonder that Massachusetts is not falling for Obama? They saw this exact same campaign run by Governor Deval Patrick and have been quite unimpressed with the results. The rhetoric has fallen flat when governing has had to start. Beware of the fraud America! Beware of the fraudster, Barry Obama!

How delusional do you have to be to believe that everyone else is hypnotized into NOT thinking? Politicos don't get it; it's not about his policies, it's a paradigm shift in the American psyche. It's the kind of transparency and accountability that the citizenry should have been demanding all along. Contrary to your assertion, we have finally awakened.

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 02/21/2008 9:04:35 PM

Like what? If he is sponsoring any bills they are LEFT OF LENIN!!! Didn't we fight a cold war to tear down socialism?

Before attacking Obama???s supporters as delusional, Robert Samuelson should read his own columns. Just before Bush invaded Iraq so that he could call himself a war president, Samuelson, ???hypnotized??? by the neo-cons and the 953 lies Bush & Company told the public, deluded us into believing that we could afford to fight the war in Iraq. Now, years later, we face an endless war, a dramatic rise in Islamic extremism, and a record deficit,
First of all Obama???s pledge to invest $ 150 billion per year in green technology is a change from the current status quo of doing nothing. It also can help trigger a $ 6 trillion dollar industry. Further more Samuelson desperately needs to read the October, 2007 issue of National Geographic. The current carbon dioxide level is 380 parts per million, The danger ration is 450 parts per. If we want to survive, we???ll need to change.
According to a recent WHO study, our current system of medical care is the most expensive in the world. The medical care system of France, which rates # 1, is chepaer than our system, which ranks # 37. Even the much maligned British and Canadian medical delivery systems are higher than ours. Obama???s proposals, though not as good as Clinton???s or Edwards??? are far cheaper than our current non-system.
Providing child-care for lower income families pays off in the long run. Having never experienced poverty himself, Samuelson has no idea of what it???s like. The stress of poverty on a small child can create serious learning problems later on. The money we spend on child care now means lower taxes later.
    .
Even Obama???s background makes him highly qualified. Having never experienced poverty himself, Samuelson can speak condescendingly about the ???symbolism of his life story??? but Obama???s life story in many ways resembles the lives of many young people in this country, as well as the vast majority of young people in the Third World where 3 billion people are condemned to live on less than 2 dollars a day. I might point out that Islamic fundamentalism is gaining ground rapidly in the slums of many mega-cities in the Islamic World.. We will never, I repeat, NEVER defeat Islamic Fundamentalism through military means. Both Samuelson and McCain need to wake up and smell the coffee. The only way we can put Islamic Fundamentalism is by offering a viable alternative. More than any other candidate, Obama understands this reality.
Samuelson???s snide comments on Obama and Obama supporters merely reflect a brain dead mentality with a bunch of brain dead ideas. If Samuelson thinks that we can survive with the same-old, same-old, he???s delusional - or as delusional as the time he said we could afford the war in Iraq.

Anyone who thinks Obama is ANY different than any other politician is fooling themselves. He is not qualified to be president. Talk to me in 20 years when he has held more of a position than senator. Governors make better presidents. Senators are used to focusing on one cause. A president has to focus on EVERYTHING. Be careful of someone flashing change as their slogan..they usually are worse than what you started with!

Mitt Romney was a governor who had superb qualifications in administration of LARGE entities. We missed our chance there and are stuck with three sentators: Basically the three stooges. Thanks Huckabites. Romney told all your blind followers that Huck was a liberal and that a vote for Huck was a vote for McCain. Now you've got McCamnesty, Billary or Obamanible. Lots of Luck!!!!

Thank you for the first honest journalistic evaluation of the Rock Star persona of Obama. As I watch the screaming masses at his appearances I'm dumbstruck that so many people can be drawn into his web of substanceless blather. He reminds me of an addictive drug, making you feel good for no apparant reason, while his toxic policy destroys the ability of his followers to think clearly. While religion has been called the Opiate of the masses Obama could be called the Meth of the political pundants.

What have we been waiting for these past eight years? To get rid of Dub-ya and his Republican cronies and put a Democrat in office. Now we have the chance to do so, but there is one hindrance: a Democratic party divided. All the "charisma", youth, inexperience, attitude, zeal, preaching style, and pep rallying just do not cut it with those of us who expect intelligence, integrity, experience, diligence, appeal, acumen and wisdom to be part of the presidency. No, we "old folks" or "old-fashioned folks" are just not ready to relinquish the presidency to some junior senator who has made it clear with half-truths and omissions that he is entitled to the nomination, and we are unmoved by the whirlwind that surrounds his campaign. We say, sadly, "Sorry, not this time". We have in Hillary Clinton a phenomenal candidate possessing every fine quality that could be imagined in a presidential contender, but the Obama camp would like to simply throw away what she and the Democratic Party have worked years to achieve.

  • Posted By: honeyrilla @ 02/21/2008 8:41:49 PM

Mr. Samuelson, what you should do, if for some odd reason you are still lost about who Obama is, is take a look at what he's been able to accomplish. For someone who has never run a national, presidential campaign, he sure is beating the "experienced" and the "veterans" who have done this several times over. Indeed, Obama is showing the "known quantities" how to run a successful campaign that is not polarized. Obama will probably be the best person to win a very large percent of America's popular vote. Obama is one of the reasons there are record turnouts in the primaries. Take your head out of the sand, wipe off your glasses and simply take a fresh look at Mr. Obama. Then perhaps you can see what millions of Americans who are tired of the "known quantities" see.

    • Posted By: NYC1973 @ 02/21/2008 8:48:46 PM

Obama knows how to give a good speach and organize a "Movement". If I was voting for student body president, he'd get my vote. He's ill-equipped to run the United States government. Get your head out of the clouds. Come down to reality and vote for someone who actually has the experience and capacity to govern.

    jmjosborne,
You are so incorrect. This nation could be MUCH worse than it is right now!! We have gone these 7 years without a terrorist attack on our soil due to the vigilence and forceful might of the United States agencies and military. The economy which we view as slumping is soaring in many of its venues. As far as the war being pointless, you don't have terrorists knocking on your door do you. That is what the war in Iraq is about--about stopping the terrorists from havin a whole nation that is a safe haven for terrorists. Do you know that more of our kids were killed in the military some years while Bill Clinton was President but you won't read that in the press. As far as death of Iraqi families--that is almost exclusively by the hands of other Moslems--Shia vs. Sunni and they have killed each other for generations over whether Mohammed's son-in-law or father-in-law should have succeed him as prophet. So goes the world. It is not our role to fixe it but it is the first and formost (really only) original reason for governments being formed and that is to protect the physical safety of it's citizens.

There is much more to fear from Obama. In a time when we are battling IslamicExtremism, I for one am not comfortable with Obama's Muslim upbringing, with his interference in Kenyan internal politics by siding with Odinga, the candidate for President from Obama's father's Luo tribe. Odinga wanted to impose Sharia (Muslim) law on the Kenyan country which is currently 85% Christian (See the New York Sun Dec. 11, 2007). Odinga lost and is now the one inciting riots of Luos and a tribe from the rift valley to chop their neighbors who are Kikyu (the tribe of the guy who won) up with machetes. Worse still, Obama has a brother still living in Kenya named Odonga (Roy) who is a Muslim extremist and who wishes to have Obama join him.

Beware America!!! In this time of struggle with Muslim extremism---

Worse still is Obama's allegiance to his "hate whitie" Christian church wherein he has had to pledge allegiance to Africa and the black agenda first. Being black is convenienvt for him right now, but have you ever seen photos of him with his white Mommy from Kansas? Not a convenient truth.!

    Beware America!!!

Please note he will not pledge allegiance to the US flag.

I am a lifelong Republican and I am not one of those Republicans Obama says is for him. He's delusional, like many of his lemming followers. I am actually trying to decide between McCain, who I come closest to on issues, and Clinton, who I believe is the best grounded in reality. Both are much better choices for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. I think too many people believe they are voting for the next American Idol. Wake up, America! Obama is just a party-line junior senator with little-to-no experience that has prepared him for the White House. He is a blank page..., yes, an empty suit! Mr. Samuelson is right on this time! We need real leaders who are prepared to deal with the real world we live in, not Obama's naive utopian vision. Go Hillary.

Oh brave new world! What a utopia it will be as long as Obama speaks to me. Pass me a Soma before I actually validate his words. I don't want to think,,,,,,,,,,,but just dream of Obama's and his promise of utopia.

Shame on you Robert J Samuelson! It's starting to "hit" the establishment that Obama is the real thing and you guys are scared. He's LIBERAL--GREAT....!!! Ezamine where 20 of the last 28 years of Conservative Republican Leasership has gotten us. We are categorically hated throughour the world. How successful and perfect must Obama be...? If good ole HRC had one 10 in a row he would have been written off long ago. The inherent bias and pandering to HRC possibilities of becomming the nominee are just sad at this point. We all know that she's been rejected, now let's watch he as she stands firmly against the tide of history as she persues what is now apparently an exercise in unabated vanity. A vote for HRC is a vote for personal indulgence.

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 02/21/2008 8:22:37 PM

With ten in a row... Obama only has a 10% lead in delagates... so how can you say HIllary has been rejected? Seriously... do you know basic arithmetic? Obama hasn't even unified the Democratic party. How is he going to unify Congress and the Senate?

Finally somebody noticed the emperor has no clothes. Now how to get the blinders off the rest of the public, so desperate for something better they are grasping at straws instead of recognizing the hard realities. I really think the press has been bought buy republicans who know McCain can eat this rookie alive.

Well I've seen more and more articles that are questioning Obama's message. The message itself is great.. I don't think anyone but Holyroler would argue that it is great to have hope and to want to change the system for the better but you have to face the reality of the day. Hope isn't going to stop the war on terror... Hope isn't going to bring the Isrealis and Arabs to a peace accord. I have great respect for Obama but I question the kind of following he has the blind devotion to the Messiah that he has garnerd.
