He will do just fine and that is all that matters. NO one is born knowing how to be president so really NO one has the experience to be president. McCain wants to keep a pointless war going and the continuation of the death of parents, sons, and daughters in Iraq. When Bill was president no one could stand Hillary and know she has "experience" yeah right. This country can be no worse than it is right now. And every president has made promises that they didn't keep. He has character and that is more important than what some of you think is experience. So, everyone is entitled to their opinon. No, he's not perfect. No one is but he wants to make a difference. My question is why "can't" he do what is he has planned to do? And what makes him diffrent from any other candidate with plans other than the obvious difference? Oh, and Mr. Samuelson, ALL the presidents have ignored THIS country's problems and has gone into another country trying to fix their problems. So, no he has not failed. We as a society has failed ourselves and if their is a man that is willing change these problems than I am willing to listen. You all can attack his speeches and his lack of "experience" but none of you can doubt his Character.

Thank you! Talk is cheap and snake oil is still snake oil no matter how eloquent the seller of said oil. I read the blogs of Obama supporters and they sound like love struck teenagers or cult worshippers. True, charisma is important, but it isn't the end all, be all. Hillary may lack her husband's charm (for better or for worse) but she also seems to have a more steadfast bearing. As for those who call for her immediate withdrawal, what are you afraid of? I live in Florida and resent being labeled irrelevant by my party. I want to hear the voices of the rest of the Country before I concede that this race is over.

Consider a bill into which Obama clearly put his heart and soul. The problem he wanted to address was that too many confessions, rather than being voluntary, were coerced -- by beating the daylights out of the accused.

Obama proposed requiring that interrogations and confessions be videotaped.

This seemed likely to stop the beatings, but the bill itself aroused immediate opposition. There were Republicans who were automatically tough on crime and Democrats who feared being thought soft on crime. There were death penalty abolitionists, some of whom worried that Obama's bill, by preventing the execution of innocents, would deprive them of their best argument. Vigorous opposition came from the police, too many of whom had become accustomed to using muscle to "solve" crimes. And the incoming governor, Rod Blagojevich, announced that he was against it.

Obama had his work cut out for him.

He responded with an all-out campaign of cajolery. It had not been easy for a Harvard man to become a regular guy to his colleagues. Obama had managed to do so by playing basketball and poker with them and, most of all, by listening to their concerns. Even Republicans came to respect him. One Republican state senator, Kirk Dillard, has said that "Barack had a way both intellectually and in demeanor that defused skeptics."

The police proved to be Obama's toughest opponent. Legislators tend to quail when cops say things like, "This means we won't be able to protect your children." The police tried to limit the videotaping to confessions, but Obama, knowing that the beatings were most likely to occur during questioning, fought -- successfully -- to keep interrogations included in the required videotaping.

By showing officers that he shared many of their concerns, even going so far as to help pass other legislation they wanted, he was able to quiet the fears of many.

Obama proved persuasive enough that the bill passed both houses of the legislature, the Senate by an incredible 35 to 0. Then he talked Blagojevich into signing the bill, making Illinois the first state to require such videotaping.

Obama didn't stop there. He played a major role in passing many other bills, including the state's first earned-income tax credit to help the working poor and the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years (a law a Post story said made Illinois "one of the best in the nation on campaign finance disclosure"). Obama's commitment to ethics continued in the U.S. Senate, where he co-authored the new lobbying reform law that, among its hard-to-sell provisions, requires lawmakers to disclose the names of lobbyists who "bundle" contributions for them.

Taken together, these accomplishments demonstrate that Obama has what Dillard, the Republican state senator, calls a "unique" ability "to deal with extremely complex issues, to reach across the aisle and to deal with diverse people." In other words, Obama's campaign claim that he can persuade us to rise above what divides us is not just rhetoric.

I do not think that a candidate's legislative record is the only measure of presidential potential, simply that Obama's is revealing enough to merit far more attention than it has received. Indeed, the media have been equally delinquent in reporting the legislative achievements of Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, both of whom spent years in the U.S. Senate. The media should compare their legislative records to Obama's, devoting special attention to their heart-and-soul bills and how effective each was in actually making law.

Charles Peters, the founding editor of the Washington Monthly, is president of Understanding Government, a foundation devoted to better government through better reporting.

The last canidate to be honest with America was Walter Mondale. Does anybody remember him?
If change is to occur you can't really tell the American people the truth, because we are part of the problem. About all we have heard from our leaders for the past 25 years is that tax cuts will solve all of our problems. It will probably require a crisis for change to occur, and the lax oversite of the markets during the last 8 years might just be the crisis that bring about the change.

Right on! The "pied piper" leading all of the unwitting done the primrose path. I voted for this man for Senator. In contacting his office, I have received nothing. I expressed my views on numerous subjects and ask for a response, I received none. On the Gonzales vote, two hours before the vote was taken, his office did not know his opinion on the subject. I can not imagine what he would do in having to make presidential decisions. He is all smoke and mirrors.

Finally an article that isn't afraid to state the obvious. ROME is burning and Obama isn't going to save it, with his pretty speeches, its the same stuff in a different package. Quick all, run to the window, and look, Obama might be walking on water.

Finally, somebody noticed that the emperor is naked. Now, how to get the message out and the blinders off the rest of the American press? Frankly I think the hype is a Republican conspiracy. McCain can make mincemeat of this guy.

You know whats funny is that everyone saids "he's not ready to be our president." But NO president was ready to be president. I just read this dubious aricle about him and ALL presidents have made the same claims but NOTHING has been done. Racism plays a huge part in this society and he as an Intelligent, strong, and powerful African American man is taking up his responsiblities as an American to make a change. So, no Mr. Samuelson, racism may not heal all the problems but its a start. I believe in this man and no one wants to admitt it but their are some who are trying to find the smallest things to attack him about. But you all can talk, he will be the First African American President - rather you all like it or not.

Anyone who thinks Obama is ANY different than any other politician is fooling themselves. He is not qualified to be president. Talk to me in 20 years when he has held more of a position than senator. Governors make better presidents. Senators are used to focusing on one cause. A president has to focus on EVERYTHING. Be careful of someone flashing change as their slogan..they usually are worse than what you started with!

Come on this guy Obama is better than David Copperfield at using smoke and mirrors he will lead us into a holy war in the middle east and destroy over 225 years of American greatness in 2 years or less God help us if he gets in but then again it might be great allah help us

I am not sure if Barrack Obama has a plan or know what he is doing. He has not been around the block long enough to know what he needs to do to help the American people. He really has not travel the full length of the block to know and understand - experience. Everything he said sounds "Cool", but having experience in organizing and running a few public programs for the needy and poor in his state can or will solve the American. I seriously wonder. The real question is Can he walk the talk? or Is everything becomes a "Pilot Program".

I find it amusing that 2 State Governor came on MSNBC show were praising Barrack Obama and when they were asked to state Barrack Obama's accomplishment neither one of them can answer the question. Why is that? I guess whole lot of "Smoking Mirror" and "Empty Promises" going on.

CHANGE and HOPE = "Pilot Program"

It sounds like Mr. Samuelson would prefer apathy on the part of the average citizenry. "Go home turn on your TV, drink your Bud, shut up and like it" is the current political atmoshere. Obama has awakened the masses because we now believe that something can be accomplished. All the specifics in the world will not change the political will, but demanding things to change might actually change something for the greater good.
