I am a black African. living in the UK. I believe that America needs change, but I also believe that America needs the most competent and experienced person for the role of President, to effect that change. If I was an American, I would have at least 3 questions for Obama. The answers he gives would help me decide whether to vote for him or not.

    1. Precisely what does he mean when he says "change is coming to America"?

    2. If the Senate and House of Reps fell into Republican hands in November, is there anything he can do as President to force their hands to go along with his agenda of "change". If there isn't, then he is fooling the American people.

    3. If after 16 months of being President, his Generals in Iraq came to him and told him that the artificial deadline would undo all their good work and lead to chaos in Baghdad, what would he do?

      1. Precisely what does he mean when he says "change is coming to America"?

Anyone who is elected the next president will be 'a change' since it will no longerr be the current president.

      2. If the Senate and House of Reps fell into Republican hands in November, is there anything he can do as President to force their hands to go along with his agenda of "change". If there isn't, then he is fooling the American people.

If Congress went back to the Republicans, that would be a 'change" from the Dems who currently have control.

      3. If after 16 months of being President, his Generals in Iraq came to him and told him that the artificial deadline would undo all their good work and lead to chaos in Baghdad, what would he do?

Why, he would SUPPORT the war, which would be a 'change' from opposing the war.

"See America, I promised you CHANGE, and I delivered!" - Obama

Misinformed and answering without checking the facts.

Instead of just accepting Hillary's experience as fact, maybe you could do some investigating and list her Major accomplishments. After 35 years, she should have so many, that should be easy but its not.
    1. Universal Health Care - Failure due to your inability to compromise.
    2. Children's Health Care - Yes, she gets partial credit along with Kennedy and Hatch who wrote the legislation.
    3. Iraq War - One of the worst foreign policy decisions in our country's history. You should have voted for the Levin Amendment. You were wrong and won't admit it. Lack of accountability is why you should never be Commander In Chief. A woman's perspective would be valuable for civilian oversight to the military. Unfortunately, it appears that you think you need to prove you are tougher than a man, which provides no oversight at all.
    4. Declaring Iranian National Guard as terrorists - Poor Judgment. This is the same group of Senator Hawks who voted for the War. Does this make you tough enough yet, General Clinton? Do I really want to place more American lives in your hands?
    5. The Economy - How many mortgages, jobs, healthcare and education improvements could we have made with the $1 Trillion that was wasted on the War?

I spent three years serving this country in the Army. In a moments notice, I could be sent to fight in a conflict that I did not support, it was not my place to question right and wrong. But it is your job as a Senator, or the higher office you seek, to question right and wrong because, the job of the military is to fight and defend, not decide if we should fight and defend.

You claim, only you, among Democrats, are qualified to be Commander In Chief. I respectfully disagree. You lack the understanding of what it is like to put your life on the line, your husband???s life on the line, or your child's life on the line. Yes, Commander Clinton, Words are Cheap, especially when they are cast from Ivory Towers with no personal risk. Your lack of military experience could be offset by good judgment but in order to demonstrate that you will need to accept accountability for your past errors.

There is an old political trick. If I repeat the same statement over and over again, and nobody challenges it, then it becomes universally accepted as truth. You have lots of experience Senator Clinton, but you do not have the right kind of experience or demonstrated judgment to make the claim of superiority to be President. I will grant that you are as smart and talented as any current politician, but there are lots of smart and talented people in the world.

We need more from our President. We need leadership.

What qualifies Obama to be Commander-in-Chief?

      • Posted By: nicksears @ 02/21/2008 11:04:17 AM

Good Judgment. He was against the worst foreign policy decision of my lifetime. McCain and Clinton were for the Iraq war.

You are right. We should have continued to support a dictator through in-action. A dictator who committed genocide on his people, rapped, murdered and tortured his own people, spent billions on new palaces while his people starved and went without medicine, who sent millions of dollars to terrorists that he got from the UN. We should have continued with the 15yr policy of doing nothing...

Did you forget that he wasnt elected during the time when the decision to go to war was being made?

What gave Abraham Lincoln one of our greatest presidents the experience to be president after so little time in congress.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/21/2008 2:18:04 PM

Let's see, Lincon brought the country into a war with itself, including the largest loss of American lives ever seen, violating state rights in favor of his own agenda (violating the Constitution in the process). Is this the presidency you see with Obama?

  • Posted By: Politmuse @ 02/21/2008 12:55:21 PM

Obama: "Change, change, change!" Huh? Where's the change?
Hillary: "Experience, experience, experience!" Huh? Where's the experience?
Earth to Al Gore: Where are you? Pull that sword from the stone now!

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/21/2008 2:09:33 PM

He's at a buffet with Michael Moore. Should be done eating in about a year...

  • Posted By: jatex @ 02/21/2008 1:25:10 PM

    You stated the following observations;

"If you examine his agenda, it is completely ordinary, highly partisan, not candid and mostly unresponsive to many pressing national problems."
By Obama's own moral standards, Obama fails. Americans "are tired of hearing promises made and 10-point plans proposed in the heat of a campaign only to have nothing change,"

Don't they all say this? The only way we can judge \ access a person is by their works and it's very difficult to call anything before time; we must always be in a wait and see state.
I don't recall President Bush promising anything and he certainly did not deliver anything; maybe that was what he had promised. We can certainly see what eight years of his leadership has produced. Did we have any idea that this would be his end results? Some of us had an idea.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/21/2008 2:07:15 PM

You must have a short memory. Pres. Bush offered a list of things that he would do. When he was elected, he declared that he recieved a 'mandate' from the people to do these things...

  • Posted By: mssanwilGA @ 02/21/2008 2:06:08 PM

You said it yourself , he is bringing people together. That within itself is the first step. Who is he bringing together ? Races, ages, genders, religions, societies, status, etc., all for a common goal, and that is to make a chage in this country. If at the age of 46 he can do this with his speeches, just think of the other accomplishments he can make given the opportunity to work with the other leaders that want change who also believes that because he has acheived this goal not because he had a silver spoon in his mouth all his life but because he has risen from the bottom and can feel the pain of the people. I say,"If you don't know my pain how can you fix my problem."

  • Posted By: mssanwilGA @ 02/21/2008 1:39:41 PM

I feel like if you think Obama speeches are rhetoric and if you have the solutions to this country problems then why aren't you a candidate. Obama offers hope. Just because he does not explain how he is going to do it (for everyone else to copy his plan) does not mean that he does not have a plan. For years others were given a chance to change this country and to bring the people of this country together where the constitution that this democracy declares it to be, but have not done it. What better person to do this is a man who's background, his intelligence and his heritage can fit into any community than Obama himself. Obama realizes that before America can be the greatest Nation of all Nations on this earth we as American people must come together as one. Because together we will accomplish all things, divided we are nothing. If we from every walk of life in this country, ever had someone who can identify with the needs of the people, it is Obama. As one of the failed leaders of this country once said "READ MY LIPS". If anyone can bring this country together in order to CHANGE the "Old America" into a "New America" where the goverment can work together with the citizens because they understand them, "IT IS OBAMA!"

    • Posted By: DrakenFyre @ 02/21/2008 1:53:39 PM

Delusions of change is what landed the Bush Sr. the job in the first place. Through what venue does Mr. Obama offer hope? A change from old politics coming from the candidate that has gotten more Union and old estabilished politicos than Mrs. Clinton? You could argue he is bringing everyone together... but what he is doing is giving great speaches, and making deals...

Why is he gaining so many endorsements and not Clinton. My opinion is that because of his inexperiance most of the endorsees view him as someone they can get their way with. Good example is his own Nuclear Bill he passed in his state. Started out strong, and when it got to the floor was as diluted as ever.

Glad to see this column is back on the home page, to balance the Clinton stuff.

Hitler was great at speeches. Coming from a German, Obama is repeating history. Wake up, the media is controling this election. Which supports Obama, so why is he being bought off. Obama knew that a woman was going to run for President, why is he tearing apart his own party. Its time the media and Obama start answering questions.

Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Iowa--these are not the heartland? How is it that the 30 or so state Obama wins are not as important as the 18 won by Hillary. He leads in the total popular vote and won-delegate count. Oh, right. Those aren't as important as narrow wins in CA and NY

    • Posted By: DrakenFyre @ 02/21/2008 1:40:13 PM

Barely wins, and its PROBABLY a bit skewed since your information comes from where? Why dont you foot note your observations? CNN? MSNBC? Newsweek? All pro Mr. Barack "Pied Piper" Obama, right? Mostly positive media as severly influenced the real issues. Edwards, Ron Paul, other candidates did NOT get the media attention.

If people are HUNGRY for change, then they would have voted much differently and it wouldnt be so hard to get an intelligent independant in. But you know what people are hungry for? The (*$@#( star factor. People are lying to themselves. You know what? It disgusts me.

USAToday, 6/2/06: Clinton dismisses talk of a 2008 presidential run, saying she is focused on winning in New York this year.

Sure sounded like someone committing to serve a full term as a Senator to me.

    • Posted By: DrakenFyre @ 02/21/2008 1:37:15 PM

QQ more about that, MAYBE, she just might think she can do change also? Make the dream of being a president come true also? For what end you might ask? Its not the highest paying job, and its obviously not easy... so yes please QQ more about something so trivial.

  • Posted By: cochrans5 @ 02/21/2008 1:17:05 PM

You the media are trying to impose your choice on the public. Could McCain be trying to have the Democrats eliminate Obama so he won't have to debate with him, who is the strongest of the two.

    • Posted By: DrakenFyre @ 02/21/2008 1:35:09 PM

Do you not read or listen to the news? Mr. Obama has, for the most part, been the "American Idol" of politics when it comes to our medias "Free Speach" views

  • Posted By: alexdiva44 @ 02/21/2008 1:34:03 PM

Barack Obama is a career politician who will say anything to get elected and is not nearly as ready to be
president as McCain or Clinton. I think the Democrates will loose the election if they run him. I am a democrate and there is no way I will vote for him until he has more experience

  • Posted By: vpad @ 02/21/2008 1:19:26 PM

yes it's very true that all candidates make promises and once in office they keep some and abandon others however, if you'd like to compare both democratic nominees the difference with them is that most of the promises Clinton is making are of issues she has been working on for quite some time way before Obama. So yes there's more proof to what she will do, continue to do and is capable of doing. I believe as an American it's quite embarrassing that the majority would elect/vote for someone who speaks to your heart instead of someone who speaks to your head. I personally don't care to be moved emotionally by a nominee I'm interested in electing to be President of the free world, I 'd rather seek that type of fufillment from within and whatever if any God I believe in. The President is suppose to use their heads, their minds to their best ability to work toward making a not good situation better. Hillary presents facts, solutions to problems backed up with proof of how she has already been working toward change for the better and yes she has made some bad choices but at least she has that experience under her belt that she has most likely learned from. That's something that "I" as a human being can surely relate to. I care not to just believe in empty words and would be more comfortable with having someone such as Obama as Vice President where he can have some influence in the Presidency however, to have him as #1 person in control is truly a scary thought. Basically I feel that Americans need to make smarter decisions when choosing their leaders stop wanting someone to "save you" emotionally these are the same idiots that voted for bush, the ignorant looking for saviors, ignoring the real facts and loads of black people who haven't voted in ages or ever and most of them just want to see a black president! This is just one sad, pathetic situation and I honestly will have no other choice other than not to vote at all if Hillary isn't elected or perhaps taking a better look at Mc'Cain to see what it is that he represents that I can live with.

I see Robert's column has completely disappeared from the first page. Wow. I guess Evan saw it and demanded it be removed because it actually criticized his darling Barack.

Interesting to note that the anti-Hillary "legbiting" bit is still easy to access.

Way to be fair and balanced, Newsweek.

  • Posted By: jabruin_27 @ 02/21/2008 1:04:02 PM

From my own personal comparison of all 3 canidates I feel that I am deeply aware of why Obama whom I feel connects most with me, he is not going to be influenced by lobbyists, and will seek to work towards ending a war going that has not truthfully served a purpose whatsoever in regards to it's original intentions. Unemployment is at a all time high, the economy is worsening daily, and various other issues that I do not fully feel Clinton or McCain can properly address continuously are becoming more visible. It's time for the U.S. to have that change which it needs DESPERATELY Barack Obama is that change!!

  • Posted By: danielblack @ 02/21/2008 1:02:17 PM

I am tired of hearing people like you state the obvious, yes he is an unknown quantity but the american people at least up to this point are choosing him overwhelmingly. We are smart enough to know there is risk involved without being scolded by any idiot with a computer and a played out idea that is being passed around and reprinted like its original or fresh. The other candidates are not appealing to the masses,no matter how hard your editorials try to push them on us.There is no buyers remorse. To be perfectly frank,If we are going to get screwed, which is always possible when the honeymoon is over, We'd rather it be by someone who can make us feel good and smile. That is why we are walking down the ailse with Barack.

  • Posted By: gistca @ 02/21/2008 12:55:19 PM

This is exactly what Americans are tire and sick to their stomach of "Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain, are with known quantities. They've been in the public arena for years; their views, values and temperaments have received enormous scrutiny, And I might add why we're in the conditions we're in! This Country is Demanding Change, The World is Demanding Change, only blind Fools cannot see this. If you didn't hear the Voters message of the Congressional Elections of 2006, then maybe you'll get the message this November. Go America, Go OBAMA.
