HERE'S yOUR pROOF HALLOW. I AM VERy GLAD yOU ASKED THIS QUESTION.
THIS pROVES THAT OBAMA IS THE REAL DEAL SON.

Obama proved persuasive enough that the bill passed both houses of the legislature, the Senate by an incredible 35 to 0. Then he talked Blagojevich into signing the bill, making Illinois the first state to require such videotaping.

Obama didn't stop there. He played a major role in passing many other bills, including the state's first earned-income tax credit to help the working poor and the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years (a law a Post story said made Illinois "one of the best in the nation on campaign finance disclosure"). Obama's commitment to ethics continued in the U.S. Senate, where he co-authored the new lobbying reform law that, among its hard-to-sell provisions, requires lawmakers to disclose the names of lobbyists who "bundle" contributions for them.

Taken together, these accomplishments demonstrate that Obama has what Dillard, the Republican state senator, calls a "unique" ability "to deal with extremely complex issues, to reach across the aisle and to deal with diverse people." In other words, Obama's campaign claim that he can persuade us to rise above what divides us is not just rhetoric.

"We recommend that this administration work with Congress, public health officials, the pharmaceutical industry, foreign governments and international organizations to create a permanent framework for curtailing the spread of future infectious diseases.

There were death penalty abolitionists, some of whom worried that Obama's bill, by preventing the execution of innocents, would deprive them of their best argument. Vigorous opposition came from the police, too many of whom had become accustomed to using muscle to "solve" crimes. And the incoming governor, Rod Blagojevich, announced that he was against it.

THIS IS A pERFECT EXAMpLE OF WHAT OBAMA CAN DO AND HAS ALREADy DONE, BRING DIFFENT FACTIONS TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE A COMMON GOAL.

BARAK LETS HIS RECORD TALK FOR HIM. HE COULD HAVE BRAGGED ABOUT ALL THIS. BUT HE HAS STA yed CONSISTENTLy HUMBLE.

OBAMA STARTED OFF AS A COMMUNITy ACTIVIST> HE IS A REAL pERSON FROM THE REAL WORLD. OBAMA IS REAL. AFTER HARVARD HE COULD HAVE GONE TO WORK FOR ANy FIRM. INSTEAD HE WENT BACK TO SOUTH SIDE CHICAGO to help people. THIS IS FOR HALLOW, THIS pROVES THAT OBAMA IS THE REAL DEAL SON.

Obama was one of the first Senators to speak out on avian flu, back in the spring of 2005, when it was a quintessentially wonky issue, not the subject of breathless news reports. There's a list of Democratic efforts on avian flu here; Obama shows up early and often. He has sponsored legislation, including what I think is the first bill dedicated to pandemic flu preparedness.

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

Hah! You are going against Barack Obama and you're white.... wait for it, wait for it........ you racist! But really, how can you pick on his plan for social security without mentioning the trillions of dollars being spent on an un-winnable war that would stop leaving our country as soon as he takes office? (And he will take the office; no one is really going to elect another republican and no one really sees a woman in their mind when they say the words "Commander in Chief".)

I feel the same way. Its as if people are getting caught up in the moment. His supporters seem like colt followers that are somewhat brain washed and not looking at reality or the bigger picture. Its sad that us Democrates seem just like the Rep party when they elected Bush.
Someone needs to call out Obama and him using everyone else's words and punch lines. That slogan he uses of "Yes we Can", he actually got from Cesar Chavez during his movement of "Si se puede". This slogan is real big with in the Mexican community both here in the U.S. and in Mexico. Its used for different things such as: During the recent Immigration rally???s and protest, in Mexican politics over in Mexico, and both here & Mexico when the Mexican Soccer National team plays.
Most important EVERYONE should be outraged and disturbed with Michelle Obamas comment of "Her being proud as an American for the first time". Someone needs to let them know we are all proud Americans through both good and bad times.

    • Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 11:32:27 AM

I absolutely agree with you that Michelle Obama's comment was outrageous. Of course, we have folks, not her, explaining that's not what she "meant." Now, she could have said "I'm proud of my country" but she didn't. She said "for the first time in my adult life." Her choice of words is concerning. But, I heard somebody on msnbc say this a.m. "We should give her a pass on this." That's what's wrong witht his campaign. People did try to ask Obama questions. But, IF he would answer, it was construed into racism or being anti-hope. I also believe the media treated him with kidgloves because of his race. I also think with media bias against Clinton they thought some of this was "funny" at times and promoted him. Sadfully, though, now that it looks like he might win the nomination, some in the media are all of the sudden worried and asking "who is this guy?" Why weren't they asking that questions months, months ago. It may be too late. I'm fearful for our country.

Obama is a good talker, smart enough to offer generic words like change and hope without adding any specifics to scare away the people who like his talk.

    • Posted By: jdbinion @ 02/20/2008 11:19:34 AM

Speak for yourself and your pride. I think this electoral process shows the majority of America is not as proud as you seem to be. I for one am not proud of how many innocent Iraqi citizens have been killed due to a war based on lies. Not to mention the Americans that have given their lives for a failed B.S. policy. This war is based on greed and oil. If you believe otherwise, you're as ignorant as the post you just made.

Change? Yes, we would get change but not necessrily positive or in the right direction. Now the details are coming out and these are frightening. Someone should give Mr. Obama a history lesson, to wit.

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

This country is NOT READY for a BLACK President. They call it the WHITE House for a reason. White people are better at everything. That includes running a country. People who represent only 12% of the U.S. have no business trying to control it! If he gets elected, somebody will probably assassinate him anyway. No tears shed here.

Interesting that Obama attends an all Black church with strong sentiments and roots tied to Africa, yet if a White candidate espoused something similiar about a church with ties to Germany then all hell would break loose about that candidate, but Obama gets another free pass--again. Interesting too that he has won handily with the Black vote in every southern state.

Geeze, they had his Face draped across every part of their body last week on the news. I really look forward to working with Africa & other OIL POOR countries in the future! Just imagine not using a country only to pillage the resources...guess I'm just living that "false dream" again.

Obama is a good TALKER.

    Joe,

Why call Barack Obama "B.Hussien Obama"? It sounds as though you're trying to call attention to the fact that his middle name is "Hussein," (which you misspelled) akin to the name of the deposed dictator of Iraq, and that his last name, "Obama" rhymes with "Osama." How ironic that you chime in to laud this article, which criticizes Mr. Obama's rhetoric, while clearly relying on such an underhanded rhetoric of your own! Heaven help us, indeed, if these are the rhetorical ploys that people such as yourself use to attack Mr. Obama. And then to compare him to Adolf Hitler and Karl Marx? On the other hand...that's all you've got to fight with. Empty rhetoric composed of ad hominem attacks.

I'm worried. Is the Newsweek editor OK? Is he sick, or is his child sick? Did he lose a family member? All I know is he must be out of the office for a good reason. There's no other explanation for this piece appearing on the web. This is the first article I've read on Newsweek (and I read it daily) that questions Obama's rhetoric.

Please tell me the editor's OK. Next thing you know I'll be reading an article about Hillary that doesn't question her integrity, motives or abilities. Mr. Editor. . .Please get well soon. I don't want to read a pro-Hillary piece here or anywhere else. I really don't think I could take it.

Seriously...I AM an Obama supporter. But I have to be honest; this magazine promotes Obama as shamelessly as Fox News promoted Rudy G. Despite the fact that I am in favor of your chosen candidate, I cannot condone your actions. The media didn't used to be like this. It used to be that newspapers, magazines and such, you know, REPORTED news. Why the switch? Is there some sort of manufacturer's tax exemption you're trying to qualify for?

Anyway. . .Good work Mr. Samuelson. You got one by the Newsweek spin doctors. I can only assume you have a a better job lined up already. If not, shame on you for risking your family's security on a piece that's a clear example of "too little too late".

It's scary to think that Obama, someone with very little experience and no specific plans concerning the governing of this country, is being taken so seriously, and it's terribly frustrating to think that Americans are being such impractical decision-makers. Why is it that so many Democrats are choosing to vote for someone that has said a whole lot of nothing thus far? Obama's handsome and has had superb oratory training. That doesn't mean he'll actually be able to guide this country in the direction that he claims it would be headed if he were to become President. Obama may be advocating for change, but change can't occur in government without effective policy to back up the rhetoric. He has talked a big talk, but I haven't heard anything promising concerning actual policy-making.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that Hillary can turn things around soon.

I don't believe so. I've known people like Obama, who can lull people into a sense of false security because they are captivating speakers. Talk is cheap. We need results. I for one am not convinced that Obama is ready to get results, because regardless of how much you talk about change, you still need to work within the established system. HRC has done that.

Since they seem to be pulling for Obama, as he relates to their key demographic and they like to seem 'hip', I would guess that they trounce Billary and give Obama another free campaign cameo...

You sound like a pessimist Robert -and that's ok. You can't judge Obama on his promises of change until after he's been in the White House. The thing about Obama is that he has the ability to bring all sides together -obviously it's a pretty light shot at him when he is still campaigning for his party's nomination. Between McCain and Clinton, Hillary is by far the tougher opponent. The Big Clinton Machine -embedded in the DFL- has been annihilated by the people Obama has brought together.

Bull! We've already suffered through seven plus years of a
"uniter not a divider". Obama is a politican, might even say
a very slick one, and we can't affort to "take a chance" on
      him for four years.

I find it compelling that there is a blind devotion to Hilary's promise of quality leadership associated with her extensive "experience." One- George W. had 4 years of experience and the disturbing elements of his presidency have grown exponentially. Two- How well could she possibly function as president when she can't effectively lead her own campaign? She thought that she would sweep Super Tuesday and failed to plan for the alternative. If she wrote a book, she could entitle it "The Audacity of Ego." Also, Zombiehero, perhaps you could benefit from the spellcheck function.

If the editor is sick ... I wish he'd get sicker. This article is refreshingly accurate.

I have read your articles with an open mind. However, I see no substance in it because what you don't realise is that Mr. Obama himself has said, time and time again, that all the candidiates have a good (or like in Hillary's cas, a similar plan) but the difference is the ability to bring together all parties of opposite ideology and get the proposed plan to work. Your article is similar to what was written about JFK, Reagan, and MLK jr. I am not surprised that Skeptics like you exist. I hope that you will re-publish this article in 2112, after President Obama's first term in the Oval office. You cannot be satisfied no matter what he says. Remember that you can fool some people sometimes but cannot fool everyone everytime. Thanks for your article. It does not fool all people b/c it lacks substance.
