Interestingly enough, I'm suprised there are still some people out there who see the forest through the trees. Tough decision by Robert J. Samuelson to not only see things for what they really are, but also to write about them. My admiration and respect to you sir, for standing above the fray. A pity, truly a sad day, when people who are blinded by delusion and ignorance turn on your for an article that was meant to educate. I would not go to a machanic for a brain operation and I would not elect a president with not experience. You would think, that people have learned their lessons after almost 8 turbulent years. It is a sad day indeed. "oh nature, thou hath fled to brutish beast, and men have lost their reason".

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

Delusions is what African American's once thought were their chances of ever seeing a president of the United States of America who looked like them. African American who are educated, knowledgable and have the intelligent to reject this rhectoric. Barark Obama's candidacy is not a delusion. He is just as capable of being the president of the United States as John MclCain or Hillary Clinton. Neither McClain or Clinton will run the country by themselves and they haven't shown that they are as capble of Obama in choosing the right people. Look at there campaigns and look at Obama's. It is Barak Obama who has proven during these elections that he is the man capable of finding the right people. His campaign has been run brilliantly. He shows that he can balance a budget. He has shown that he can enegize the country. He has shown that he can build a team that has diversity. His judgement has shown to be the best. The only delusions are tthe delusions of those who thought that HE Can't. He will prove them wrong. HE CAN!!

Hope he CAN use his theme of change to change his wife's attitude so she can be proud of her country all the time and not just when she feels like it. CHANGE that!

Mr. Samuelson You have hit the nail on the head .OBAMA is a great Orator that says nothing. We can
change, we can change but there are no concrete facts to back up what kind of change. I am afraid
that his inexperience and his powerful rhetoricc means double trouble for the United States. Exactly
what are his views and what does he actually stand for, so far I can't see anything but talk.

I agree. Again, FINALLY here is a journalist that is addressing this issue. I think Mr. Obama is a great motivational speaker and it's wonderful that people are getting out there to vote. It does not alter the fact that I don't see that he's coming up with actual solutions to the issues, but is parroting Hillary Clintons' actual solutions to address issues in her speeches. I do not want a winner of a popularity contest, I want someone that can actually get things done. I keep seeing the momentum as something akin to the movie "The Candidate". Pretty scary that so many are so easily led.

Apparently, you are not aware of Senator Obama's call to impose payroll taxes beyond the $96,000 salary limit currently set. Specifically, Senator Obama will fix the problem with social security, as Senators Biden and Edwards also suggested, by imposing the payroll tax not just on those making under $96,000, but also on incomes in excess of $200,000. This (as Senator Biden pointed out in a debate) will help close the social security shortfall. Also, you do not seem to understand that if we can, in fact, change our system from a "disease care" system to a "prevention healthcare system" we will save millions, if not billions, of dollars at the local level, the state level and the federal level. Also, a healthier elderly population will save us billions in medicare dollars. If you do not believe Senator Obama, or myself, about this, please check out the amount of money Sweden (the Country who has most successfully achieved a "prevention health care system") spends on health care per capita. Also, check out how this change has benefited Sweden so much that they may pass us per capita in GDP by 2050.

Finally, you completely miss the most important message of Senator Obama. Senator Obama is trying to do this a different way; specifically, he is trying to do this with the American people at his back. While I can certainly understand why a journalist would be cynical about this call by Senator Obama, I do believe you can examine Senator Obama's actions to date and see all of the following: first, Senator Obama is, in fact, running a different kind of campaign; second, many Americans who were formally apathetic about the political process have re-engaged with a vengeance and most of us will continue to be engaged, involved and active after the November election; third, Senator Obama is calling on us not just to be involved in the political process, but also, to be involved at the local and community level. This last cannot be underestimated. I will provide just a few examples of how these "words" by Senator Obama could make a fundamental difference for the better. The more parents participate in the PTA, the better the local school system. The more people who mentor children, the fewer children will be lost in an alienated state. The better people parent their own children, the more productive citizens these children will be. Rhetoric isn't everything, but one should not discount the power of words simply because one has seen so many words spun to no meaning. I would ask you and anyone else reading my words to set aside their fear that this cannot be true and realize that it is, as Senator Obama repeatedly tells us, up to us (the People) to make it true.

What track record are you talking about? NAFTA? or Iraq? What track record are you talking about? Because what I see is a country sick of all the old track record of backroom politics and hidden agendas. What we are overwhelmingly not asking for but demanding of is change of all of these so called track records. I don't care if Bacack Obama is eloquent in his speech, as a matter of fact I am overjoyed that he is. He lights a fire and passion in people. I don't think he should apoligize for inspiring people to get involved. Frankly thats whats been missing. The people of the United States of America, young and old, black, white, hispanic, asian and everyone else doing something great for their country. What were those famous words? Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Empty words? Please!!!

Senator Obama's campaign reminds me of the Wizard of Oz, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"
I'm a registered Democrat, I want the best candidate for my party, not the candidate of the month. I f he is not vetted now, he will be when the GOP gets ahold of him, and that my friends will not be pretty. Karl Rowe is salivating as we speak.
I also want to know if I'm the only one who sees the irony in Obama being the candidate of change, then trotting out Ted Kennedy, (who has been in congress for almost 50 years) to endorse him.....

Sen. Obama makes those who are blinded by the veil of pessimism feel threatened because of his wonderful optimism. I would be proud of america again by having this innovative thinker be our Commander and Chief. By the way, JFK was 42 when he was elected. He also had limited experience. He did just fine. So fine ir got him killed. Sen. Obama will be just as great! Wake up. By the way, being a pessismist is a product of a very lazy mind.

The negative comments in this article about Obama apply to all of the candidates. Your new commentary is more of the same. Here's another obstacle: Senator Obama, give the American people more specifics about your change-agenda. Less motivational speeches that turn into high-school pep-rallies and more substance.

Mr. Obama has the big speeches but no substance..he's like a neatly wrapped present but when opened, there is nothing but disappointment. I refuse to vote for a man to run this country with name Hussain or Obama in it. As far as scandals with the Clintons, that is nothing compared to the scandals that have plagued the current administration and gotten this country to where it is today. Obama has no concept on foreign policy, has no clue how to lead us out of war, has no experience on what it takes to get this country back on its feet. Blacks are voting for him for that reason, he's black. They see nothing else and they don't care. Hillary at least can back up her statements with facts and has an agenda on how to get this country out of the trap we're in. I would seriously think twice before I gave any vote to Barack Hussain Obama.

America needs a leader, not a motivational speaker--change, change, change, change is sounding like Obama's broken record--change, change, change--just don't change America into anything less than the land of the free, Senator Obama.

Unfortunally, what you are presenting here in your comment is just a bunch of ideas wraped up in an stereotyping gift wrap. Who cares about a middle name. You can present something better than that. People are sick and tired of individuals full of stereotype beliefs. In fact, it is those kind of people that can't never see the door of opportunity to get out of the whole our society is right now. Good vote for Hillary, but don't even go there saying that blacks (I am not African American) are only voting for Obama because of his skin complexity and roots. You are an offense to the African American community. But if you retain that mind set, then you are saying woman in this country who vote for Hillary only are voting for her because woman had never ruled this land and not because they think she is competitive-that includes you! So, take back your erroneous way of thinking about how African Americans are only voting for a candidate with the same roots just because of that. And so what, yes, this is one of the greatest time in the history of our society, but it not a matter of black or white. But it is so sad to have people (like you-no offense-with all the respect you deserve) with poor views and short vision in our communities. Therefore, your short vision will be left out and society will advanced in all areas.

      Dear Diva1025,
You are free to vote for your choice and I am free to vote for my choice.........that is democracy. Wake up and stop your rationalizations. You started you life without experience and but you grew up and are now experienced in a lot of things but that doesnt make you the custodian of wisdom, cos you still make some errors.........lo you are about to make another one by voting for clinton!!!

A poison pen discredits Newsweek!! Newsweek failed to acknowledge my very civil comments taking Mr. Samuelson to task for another article in which he attacks Senator Obama after the fashion of the disgraced ex-president. NO amount of morphing will transform him into a statesman, elder or otherwise, and Americans are clearly expressing their distaste for anything that smacks of a co-presidency!!!

The negative comments in this article about Obama apply to all of the candidates. Your new commentary is more of the same. In order to get the job, why does a Black man have to be held to a higher standard in order to win? Seems to me some people just keep moving the bar where he (YES A BLACK MAN) is concerned.

    1. Frist he would not be able to organize, then he would not be able to raise money, them well blacks aren't voting for him why should we, then well whites are voting for him but it is just young dumb white people, then women won't vote for him, then Latinos won''t vote for him, oh and he is not electable against the Republicans.

Seems like every obstacle he overcomes, he is just asked to jump through more hoops. Why is this the case?

I'm so tired of the black man this, and the black man that, the fact of the matter is Mr. Obama is a great man, and a great speaker, but black, white, red, purple, striped, or polka dotted, HE IS NOT READY TO BE PRESIDENT... He offers many words of inspiration, but no real plan to do anything at all... This is not CHANGE folks, this is more of the SAME.. He is a politician and will say anything to get elected, period

I completely agree that he should not be judged on the basis of his race. However, it is continually disturbing to me that no matter what Hillary Clinton does she is villified -- if she shows emotion, she's "weak", if she shows strength and agressiveness, she is a "b**ch" -- and then when she makes any comment remotely critical of Barack Obama on anything, the race card comes out, when race has nothing to do with it. Vote for the person you want based on what you think they can bring to the table as our President and leader -- but make sure you take everything into account, not just some pretty speeches.

Always someone to pull the race card out. Clearly tribal. I am an individualist and race is not an issue. Its sad to see people still bring it up like we are on different teams!

Any reporters or voter s who believes any of the policy positions discussed during political campaigns are likely to be enacted ar e DELUSIONAL. I can't think of any recent proposal that became law except Bush's reckless tax cuts, before and after starting a dumb war, and that has turned potential surplusses into definite deficits. Obama is willing to work with republicans and fashion solutions that will hopefully be in the best interest of the USA. He has articulated some of those goals and they include making healthcare available for all and more affordable and a few other things. that are within our reach. I don't believe Obama is deluded enough to think he can solve all our decades old issues in 4-8 yrs--what he promises is to jointly move those issues forward towards workable solutions which is a lot more than anyone else has been able to do. He is asking all American citizens to get involved and work together to help solve these problems and he offers the best hope for that to happen. He deserves to be given the opportunity to lead and don't assume he expects his stated posiitons to be the final answer on these problems. EP in MA
