I think you need to read something other than these bias talking points. Obama has over a decade long voting record that is all for public consumption. If you make a judgement based on anything other than that then you are voting in ignorance.

I have checked his voting record or lack there of. I have also seen some of the information posted that he has written some 890 bills, but have yet to find that number anywhere. I don't tend to think the author of this article is being biased. It did make me look a littler closer at Mr. Obama's voting record and I see some truths in what he has written.

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

So what member of the McCain campaign wrote this article for you? Of course he is promising the moon. It???s the primaries. He needs to distance himself from the others. All that is left is Hillary. Does anybody really think Hillary is going to provide healthcare for all (she was so successful in her husbands first term) or that McCain is going to make college affordable? (how many tears has he been in the Senate as the average American watched virtually every educational tax break disappear?).

The media needs to stop making the American voter out to be some stupid uninformed electorate. The average voter knows these are all empty promises. Voters are sending a clear message in the primaries. That message is there has to be someone other than a Bush or a Clinton that can lead this nation.

In November, America will decide its next President based on one simple theme. Do we stay in Iraq or do we get out? Do we continue with the status quo or do we bring a fresh attitude to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? The average voter realizes all of these promises won???t happen overnight. They do realize though that if it is going to ever change, it has to begin somewhere. The decision is do we let a true American hero continue down the same path and wait for another time, or do we vote for a person giving them a chance to become a new American hero?

Obama has more than a decade of voting history that you are free to look up. If you would actually like to know something then you should read something other than this bias opinion piece.

      • Posted By: aussiedogmom @ 02/20/2008 3:21:04 PM

Obama has missed 182 votes in his 3 years in the US Senate. That is 38.8% of the votes taken in that time period. He has also voted with the Republican party 42 times. Not the kind of voting record that makes a president.

Good post! Obama talks well, smart enough to refrain from specifics--not risking the potential of alienating anyone--just keep talkings about change, change, change, change, change. Hopefully he'll change his words so the voters may learn what specifically he wants to change, change, change, change. Hopefully he won't change America's ability to defend itself.

Kennedy, also, had no "Experience" in Washington before becoming president!
JFK was only in the Senate for 2 terms when he won the prisdency, and he too, accomplished only a handful of things with his time in the Senate as Obama did. (mostly voting on bills, which is what Senators do!)
Kennedy also delivered inspiring speeches that focused on so called "rhetoric".
But do we regret Kennedy? No! Today he is an American icon!
It is this "Experience" factor that Clinton & McCain think is their strongsuit, that is actually their weekness!
People don't want any more so called "Experience", they want people who are down to earth, honest, passionate, morally strong and who can deliver on their promises, which is exactly the opposite of what we've been getting in Washington lately!
And speaking of rhetoric, McCain and Clinton talk a tough talk, and their speeches are also full of rhetoric!
Why is no one knocking on them for spewing rhetoric? Because they're older, and have been around longer??
Can anyone prove that they aren't spewing rhetoric??
No! and you know why? because its way too premature to declare anything all three of them say as rhetoric!!!
How can you accuse any of them of being full of rhetoric before they had a chance to make anything happen??

This whole "rhetoric" thing is such a cheap cop out!! Come out with a real argument against Obama and then we can talk, otherwise cut the crap!

JFK is an american icon because he was shot. He was actually a terrible president if you look at the facts!

Your statements are not true about President Kennedy having had no experience before becoming president. He had been the Senator from Massahcusetts and he served in Congress. Before that, he served in combat in WWII AND his father was Ambassador to Britain. The Keenedys have long been steeped in American politics. Seven years talking does not a president make. Samuelson hit everything right on the mark.

Barack Hussein Obama Bin Laden Chavez Stalin Kim Jong-il ... I recognize this attack style anywhere. You are a republican through and through. Politics of fear at play again, same as always!
Go ahead, attach Hitler to his last name and call him that on Fox news, and see if it makes a difference.
We are no longer affected by this moronic spin that republicans do every god-damned election. Go lie under a rock somewhere where communism is still considered the "boogey-man" of the world.

      Idiot!

          Really? "doctoral degree in economics"?
Well, considering you are - quite ironically too - talking to a guy who's actually lived in Dubai, you are GRAVELY mistaken.
NO ONE can rise or get ANYHWERE in Dubai, unless they have Emirates Citizenship, which is not possible for any non-native to attain, you have to be third or fourth generation to even be granted a citizenship!!
If you are a foreigner, and most people working in Dubai are, they get no services from the government! They only get services from the companies that brought them into the country to work for them!
What people can do in Dubai, and most do, is make loads of money because of the high pay, and spend them all INSIDE The Emirates!
Sure, you can transfer your money outside of the country, but your expenses for living there will pretty much drain out all the money you are making!
And Dubai is a special case: Dubai is considered the middle east's "Playground" and Trade and Financial hotspot! All their money comes from oil, trade, and tourism, and their population isn't proportionate to their land size!

And how are you comparing Dubai's system to the US? Dubai is a member state of a collection of "Emirates", its a completely different system!!

I thought a guy with a "doctoral degree in economics" would know that!

Thank you much for finally saying what I have been waiting for SOMEONE in the media to say all along! Obama does a fine job of talking the talk and tossing the word change around at every corner, but shows little promise of ever being able to walk the walk. For all of those who are prepared to blindly follow this man wherever his dribble takes us: I hope you will all be so inspired when he is giving his speeches while the world falls apart around us. Wake up America and CAST YOUR VOTE FOR CLINTON... BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

It is nothing less than tragic that the American electorate has been so disserved by the media - even before we got down to Obama/Hillary/McCain as our choices. Rarely were realy issues addressed fully in the debates. Those who really demonstrated an understanding - Biden and Dodd in particular from the senate, and Richardson - were given scant notice. Now we have the following choices - to elect the first bi-racial president, the first woman president, and the first oldest. The only one of these who has any capacity at all to deal wth the issues identified in this article in their full comlexity is Hillary Clinton. But my real choice was Joseph Biden - . Despite their vast differences, I tremble when I think of either one of them at the helm - one because of lack of experience and the other because I am not sure he knows where he does stand ---.

An excellent piece. Finally a journalist who really looks and and has listened objectively over a period of time. For the most part, people have been giving Senator Obama a pass, never questioning him about anything and accepting everything he says point blank. The problem is, as Mr. Samuelson states, we know McCain and Clinton. They're not pretty. They're not young and they're not slick. But we know them and of all of the candidates on both sides of the campaign, they are the only two with true, long term track records and have taken stands that have been contrary to their parties from time to time. As a fairly conservative Democrat, I don't want a candidate that is easily swayed because of lack of experience and the obsessive need to fit in and be liked. Senator Obama stops at nothing to get what he wants. He courts everybody. He sways hither and yon. "Yes'. No sir. Yes, I agree with everything you say and want. Vote for me. -- no, you're absolutely right. Vote for me." Samuelson hits it right on the head and he is one of the few journalists (and using that term for him is meant as a supreme compliemtn at a time when many in his vocation are not journalists at all but practice the yllow side of it bordering on tabloidism and cronyism, swooning, slopping sugar and bowing, but not looking at what is as stake when it's all said and done. This country has to have a leader. Someone who's been in the trenches, and despite the grinning and handshaking and "borrowed rhetoric" and attempts to align himself with the shadows of men he's not anywhere NEAR in the work they'd done by his age), he's just a portrait.Smoke and mirrors. Many Americans fell for the aw shucks of George Bush. The easy smile and jokes. The "likability" factor. And we're mired in a mess. Here we are 7 years later with the same kind of decision to make and we must be careful this time around. Thanks to Mr. Samuelson for stating what is, for millions, is obvious.

Barack the motivational speaker, to Barack the illusionist!!! I believe the truth is that American people ARE TIRED; tired of not getting things done in WASHINGTON. You are absolutely right when you say people have fallen in love with an idea. Just maybe you are wrong about exactly what the idea is idea. The idea that I fell in love with is that someone can be elected to the Office of the President and have one care other than fighting against an idea of another party because it is an election year, a care other than voting against a piece of legislation because it will make congress look weak or may be even to keep from breaking yet another campaign promise. I would like to see my President make a decision based on what is RIGHT, what is just and what is fair. I do not think Clinton or McCain can come close to being that President... What I think need to change is the priorities of Washington. After all...the government should be fort the people and by the people. Maybe people lack the capacity to put that feeling into words and explain to the nation???s media but it is real and that is in fact a CHANGE. Comment: This is not about being African American and educated. I am a professional African American. Voting for someone because he insights hope for change is sad. It is very contrary to being educated. Educated people make decisions based on facts and evidence. I personally think it says a lot about my community. To choose a candidate, for whom you cannot name one legislative accomplishment is discouraging. He is a MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER; but it stops there. His own supporters cannot say what he stands for. I am not going to go through Hillary's accomplishments because there is not enough screen space . I ask my African American educated community look at the issues and separate it from his color. If he were a white man with 2 years in the Senate (1 year of campaigning); many years in Illinois senate where he failed to vote on several critical issues and a campaign that has not stated a plan to effect change would be you still be voting for him? LOOK AT THE ISSUES not the color of his skin or how well he can memorize other people's speeches (that is plagarism last time I checked). DO NOT Believe the HYPE! Republicans will slaughter him.

Comment: mksl1 , I got a book; two actually. I suggest you read "Dreams of My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope", both by Baraak Obama. Then you might want to read the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. You might then realize that the people you refer to as having an eenie-meenie-minie-mo vote are the heart and soul of our country. They are the men and women of our military you probably are eager to support. They are the miners trapped underground and the factory workers who make the car you drive. They built the house you live in; the same people who protect it from criminals and who will come running if it catches on fire.

Our country wouldn't exist if Columbus didn't hope he would find land and not drop off the ocean as most people thought. You wouldn't have the freedom to voice you're opinion if common folk didn't step forward to answer Geoge Washington's call. Where whould we be if Abraham Lincoln didn't settle for a country divided? Or if Rosa Parks decided to move on the bus? Would our country be where it's at if Dr. King didn't have a dream? Or if President Kennedy gidn't have a goal to reach the moon?

I happen to have a degree in Political Science and a MS in Human Resource Management. I have done the research. One thing I know is how important and special every single eenie-meenie-minie-mo vote is. I am voting for hope. I am voting for change. I will not accept the status quo.

Our country needs a president who will inspire us to do more. We need a president who can unite us, not divide us. We need a president who will restore our faith in government. We need a president who is willing to talk to our enemies; a president who will protect our rights and freedoms as eagerly as protecting our national security.

That's why I am voting for Baraak Obama

I will be relieved once this nomination is complete because than maybe there will be hope for unity. Right now there is none. Either the country votes for a black man or a white woman. Either way , they are both minorities. They both have credentials, one is more focused and well versed and the other is a great communicator and focused on making history at any cost. Women don't like Hillary because she kept her marriage vows, white men don't like Hillary because she's a woman, the young people don't like Hillary because she's boring and doesn't know what she's talking about, the white women think she arrogant and full of herself, yet this woman did not hesitate to bring her state back from the ruins after 911. Positioned herself to continuosly strive for the betterment of each individual American. She fights for women's rights all over, not only in the United States but other countries as well. The mutation and killings of little girls. No one fights harder and loves America like she does.

Obama definitely can speak fluently and intelligently. But there is no "meat and potatoes" to explain how he is going to help with out national challenges. Another issue to raise is the so called "Muslim" background of Obama. Not sure if it's true, but if it is, aren't we fighting against what these people beleive in right now? What does that say to our American men who are placing their lives on the line for our freedom?

No Obama is not Muslim! Not only that but we are not a war with Muslims there are millions of muslins in this country. We are fighting terrorists who don't follow their own religion. It is a sin in Islam to kill in fact Islam has the same laws of Judaism and Christianity because Islam believes that it in the old testament, the same as Christianity. Islam believes in Moses and the ten commandments AND in Jesus!

Why are so threatened by optimism and hope? You seem so angry. JFK was an excellent president. He was not perfect. Either is Barack. But you must also understand that Obama's following is motivated by a new way to do business in Washington. Maybe you need to search your heart and ask yourself what it is about yourself that won't admit what hope can do.

    • Posted By: jrichling @ 02/20/2008 4:17:17 PM

I think you are forgetting that JFK got nothing done is was Johnson who got the plans into action. Oh my he had experience in the senate. Wow what a thought.

I'm thrilled to finally hear from a member of the media who sees through the smoke and mirrors. Hillary gets nailed to the wall for every little thing she says and does, while Obama contines to get a free pass by most of the media, and apparently by most of the country, as well. If Obama is elected as the next president, let's all hope he surrounds himself with REALLY good people who will tell him what HE needs to hear, and then, unlike W, hope that he actually listens to them. It's our only hope.

WEll, at least, he's already got Duval Patrick to tell him what to say.

THANK YOU for pointing out what I have been saying all along! What is wrong with people that they are so ignorant they can't see that his speeches are just a bunch of words? I guess most of the crowd are too busy cheering to actually LISTEN to what he says - just the same words over and over again at each rally. And why has it taken so long for some of you new reporters to come out with the truth? He has been able to talk negative about everybody else but the minute anybody says anything about him all the new reporters jump into the fray and flail the other person (mostly Hillary). It has been pathetic.

Finally someone in the press has put down the cup of Obama-aid. I admire Mr. Obama's passion, rhetorical skill, and his dream. Unfortunately, the day of the election we will all wake up from this dream and still have a failing economy, a failed foreign policy, a faltering educational system, and millions of americans struggling with healthcare, gas prices, and a declining dollar...not to mention that war we are in. I continue to seriously doubt if Mr. Obama will have the real creativity and vision to address these issues. Thanks for the reality check on the dream...maybe there's still time for change: this time a change to some wisdom over wishful words.

It is obvious that you do not hold the same type of scruntiny for Hillary clinton or John McCain. Both of these individuals have no new ideas. John McCain is holding up George Bush's policy and Hillary will repeat her husband's policies such as NAFTA. However, you did say you are comfortable with name recognition - maybe you should take a closer look. Barack, has good ideas such as putting Americans back to work by, rebuilding the infra structure, and health insurance that is affordable for all americans. Hillary had eight years to get a health bill through when her husband was President. She still failed. I do not believe she can do it now. Her talk is idle. Where is her experience? Is she speaking of her husband's experience as a President? They are not the same. Her dealings were mostly social. That does not count as experience. The real delusion is yours if, you think John and Hillary have solutions - I haven't heard them!

Experience Obama 2 years as a senator, Hillary 6 years. She has four more years of being in Washington to know what does and doesn't work. I'd call that experience, wouldn't you?

His economic policies are very irrational. Anyone who has taken a freshman college economics class knows that you can't just tax the businesses and people to death. It will destroy the economy. Equally important, he has a picture of Che in his campaign office. Che killed thousands of people for the Castro's movement. Everyone knows that communism and socialism are terrible government systems. Soviet Russia killed 18 million of its own people. That fact that he has any admiration for communism makes me sick to my stomach.

    • Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 4:16:40 PM

It isn't just Obama but many of his staffers who have Che in their offices. it is VERY scary to think our possible next President would do that. Maybe, he'll take that picture and put it in the oval office next to Washington's!
