Another thing that Obama promises is that he is a "uniter, not a divider" who can bring together America. Funny, for the last 3 years, Obama hasn't united the parties to end the war, tackle health care, deal with the student loan and sub-prime crisis, and a host of other things. He hasn't led in the Senate, so how can we expect him to lead the Congress once he is elected president?

People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.
Since most of Obama's legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there -- and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously. (Another factor is reporters' fascination with the horse race at the expense of substance that they assume is boring, a fascination that despite being ridiculed for years continues to dominate political journalism.)

The mob mentality giving Obama a pass on actually speaking truth to his power is the scary aspect here. All the candidates should be called to task for explaining what they'd do (or not do) - don't you dare give a candidate a free pass on that because he learned to copy some eloquent words from Deval Patrick.

I'll give you some promises, and facts, and if you can reconcile them, then your support of Obama is well warranted. .and you are ahead of Obama in terms of planning..

    1) He'll end the war in 2008 - military logisticians have been quoted as saying even an aggressive evacuation would take 20 months. There are over 30,000 vehicles in Iraq - all of them have to be driven 400 miles, washed, loaded into ships, and sent back. Helicopters have to be shrinkrapped. And hopefully we wouldn't sacrifice speed to the safety of the troops in a retreat. And hopefully we wouldn't ignore executions of Iraqis that worked with the Americans, especially if groups started to move in to take over the power vacuum. His talk of ending this (not just beginning to end it, which I believe in) in 2009 isn't just wrong, its naive, and if he believes it, malicious.

    2) SS/Medicare - his talk of reforming Social Security involves just raising the earnings cap - basically, adding 12.4% to the tax bracket of anyone earning $102k and upward. So a 28% tax bracket become 40%, and a 39% tax bracket (the former Clinton top rate) becomes 51%. He has no stated position on Medicare, which become insolvent in 11 years. Its already a single payer system - where would the savings come from - the BIG savings necessary so the boomers don't bankrupt it

    3) The AMT - elminating the AMT on middle income voters will cost $1 trillion over 10 years. He hasn't stated how he would end it, but we assume he will, so if he lets the top-rate Bush tax cuts expire, then its a wash - 1 trillion in revenue goes to 1 trillion in tax reductions.

    4) The Bush tax cuts - many effect the rich, but not most - every bracket was lowered, and middle income families with kids saved well over $1-2k. Does those expire too? And capital gains - with baby boomers retiring, and selling stocks/bonds to finance their retirement, do you want to raise the capital gains quite a bit? In fact, since the capital gains tax was cut, revenues from it have skyrocketed. Do you raise them and watch the revenue plummet?

    4) Immigration - he didn't sign onto the comprimise McCain-Kennedy plan (one that over 60 senators supported) - what's his plan?

    5) FISA - he didn't sign onto the renewal of FISA wiretap laws, which over 60 senators supported. what's his plan? If two identified terrorists route an internet call through a U.S. router, can we listen in?

And he's been campaigning continuously for the past 8 months.. doing nothing in the Senate. We've had 8 years of arrogance and incompetence in the White House - I feel Obama might drop the arrogance, but leave us with the incompetence.

Few voters do this type of analysis. If Obama is able to carry his inspirational message of uniting people into the presidency, he is likely to be more successful at fulfilling his promises than either Clinton or McCain would in achieving theirs. They are both polarizing personalities who would perpetuate the current political stalemate in Washington.

Here's my problem with "columnist" like this. Lazy to research Senator Obama's extensive legislative record and discover what's he's accomplished. I'll give you 4.

the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006???became law.

The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act???became law.

The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate.

The 2007 Government Ethics Bill???became law.

The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee.

That's just four out of hundreds of significant legislation that Senator Obama has accomplished in his short time in national office. His work in the Illinois legislature is even more impressive.

I encourage everyone to do their due diligence and see for themselves.

Even asuming all the observations in this article are accurate, we still need to support Mr. Obama for one simpl ereason: According to the national polls, he is the only chance democrats have to beat John McCain. If Hillary wins the nomination, it will be a call to arms for every Republican to come out of the wood work and vote for John McCain. Not because they like McCain, but because they HATE Hillary Cinton. John McCain is, in too many ways, too similar our present presidential nightmare. I am willing to take my chances with Obama, if for no other reason than because he can beat McCain. In addition. Obama just happens to be an intelligent, well spoken, leader that will be respected by other leaders around the world. He also makes me feel good about our country again. Certainly Senato Obama's plans are no worse than Hillary's; and given the choice between two equivalent sets of "plans" I will take the one that puts a democrat in the white house, and is delivered by a man that seems to be able to bring both sides together. Something promised 8 years ago by the nightmare. Never has our country been more polarized. Perception is everything, and Senator Obama gives the perception of a strong unifying leader. Give him a chance. Our alternatives are, as Mr. Obama says truthfully, "more of the same."

    • Posted By: Julia55 @ 02/20/2008 4:03:02 PM

Unfortunately, this country needs more than perception. And it needs more than a smile and handshake. He's mobilizing with the right tools for the wrong job. For those of us who have been around for a while and have voted in MANY presidential elections, we know that it's more than loud music and handshakes. Senator Obama is not a leader. He's a talker. All of the "hearst and minds" garbage his people preach are mantra with no substance. He can't do this job. And for those who believe he unifies: this same person made the attempt to paint a president who is well known for his work with people of color as a racist and he did this in time for primaries with large African American populations, implying that he was being attacked by a White man. And they ran out and voted for him, forgetting that this country was most fiscally sound during President Clinton's years than it has been in the last 30 years. People forgot and voted for his youth and skin. And if he gets the nomination, the same "hearts and minds" followers will be the first apologists, and they will be the first to turn their backs, leaving us to 4 years of inexperence and too much talking.

Why do I feel that the author is injecting racism and fear into the American public. Is that he too can not handle the possibiities of having an African American President. Just as it is time for change, peoplr don't mind change. We do not feel the same as our elders when it comes to rase in our time. Let go of the past and look to the future. Not all elected presidents had 35 years of politcal life experience!

If he never talked about his ethnic backgroud then he would be like Tiger Woods...rejecting his people...Grow up!!

Even assuming everything in your column is true, Obama inspires, motivates and unites. His background bridges the gap between white and black, young and old, rich and poor, immigrant and citizen, Christian and Muslim. And with his policies being very similar to Hillary's, why shouldn't we vote for him, particularly as he has captured the the soul and imagination of America?

  • Posted By: Jessome @ 02/20/2008 3:51:04 PM

It is about time that someone in the media came out and stated everything that I have discussed with my husband, Obama is well spoken but shows little to no record of accomplishments that makes him stand out as a presidential candidate. I have been an executive in corporate America for a number of years and I have hired countless associates to fill high level positions and the best gauge to determine if someone has the ability to do well at a given position is to see what they have accomplished in their past. I do not see the list of accomplishments I feel a presidential candidate should have in Obama. As a leader the worst thing that you can do is not make a decision Obama has done this over a 130 times in the Senate he has voted present opposed to making a decision and being accountable for that decision. We need to review the facts of the situation, because making decision based on ones emotions will lead to a poor decision which is why we as a country have as many problems as we do currently, and stating the facts is not negative campaigning it is merely the truth.

Comment: During the first eight (8) years of his elected service Barack Obama sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced:
      ??? 233 regarding healthcare reform,
??? 125 on poverty and public assistance,
      ??? 112 crime fighting bills,
      ??? 97 economic bills,
      ??? 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
      ??? 21 ethics reform bills,
      ??? 15 gun control,
??? 6 veterans??? affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included
      1. **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,
      2. **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,

First off, a state senator basically 'works' for the govornor. A US Senator 'works' for their party. So in both cases, Obama has simply been a worker bee. How well did he work? Well, he did get a whole 3 bills passed into law out of 2000!

And while the Obama cult don't want to hear the truth, its good to see some journalists still have their head on their shoulders and can tell it like it is. For me, I've always seen Obama as a con-artist. Though he's good at manipulating, it still baffles and saddens me that many Americans are falling for this lies. Why can't they shake their heads and clear their minds and hear him for what he really is? He's brainwashing the public and they're falling for it.

Robert J. Samuelson, I know you get paid to say what you say, but if you know all these things and have such a fantastic delusion that you get paid to write I wonder why you didn't run for president? I could be just as delusional as you and Obama and Clinton, both of them!

No what it is is, Robert J. Samuelson, knowes who he wants to be the Dem President and since it's not Obama and Obama is winning, his delusion kicks in. Question remains, who is delisional?

Thank you. At least there are still people out there who have not lost their mind. People are listening to what this guy says not what his actions have shown. He has never been there for the working poor. His following has been come a cult. It is scarey that people are being fooled by words.

I have to say that there is alot of Obama bashing going on---and it seems like many are not willing to believe that Obama can bring about change. One of the most important changes that he has made and that Hilary Clinton nor John McCain can claim--is that he did not take money from the special interest lobbists; so he does not "owe" them anything. That alone is a good start to making changes in Washington and how it works.

So why is his chief of staff a paid lobbyist? You are also very naive to think that ANYONE gave to Obama's campaign in large amounts not expecting anything in return...
