Thank goodness that someone is finally saying what I've noticed for months now! I cannot believe that so many Americans are not "reading between the lines" - I am an educator and reputable national unions endorse Clinton for her 100% supportive voting record on education. Obama has such little political experience, what makes people think that he has what it takes to "change" this country. The other fundamental flaw of change is: before you vote for change, make sure you know what you are voting for - or the kind of change you get might have a very bitter taste afterwards. How can Americans be so naive as to think that this person can actually bring about bipartisan change ... Just look at how his campaign handled the florida defeat: Because there were no delegates at stake, floridians don't count - until he needs our electoral votes in November. Then we are worth his time. Then he'll bother to court us - No thanks, Obama.

Don't be surprised when he eventually comes down to Florida, flashing that smile of his and talking about change, change, change. He needs to change his broken record message--change, change, change, change....

Talk about lacking an original thought! Mr. Samuelson is simply repeating a lot of the other naysayers who have lost faith in the people of this country lead by a truly inspirational leader. Obviously Obama has concrete ideas and real solutions as anyone can see by reviewing the depth of his positions on the issues on his website (www.barackobama.com). If you click on "Issues" you will find all of the details you need on education, the economy, energy, Irag, civil rights and a host of other topics.

One of Mr. Samuelson's main points is Sen. Obama's plans are unaffordable. How much could we afford if were not spending $275 MILLION PER DAY fighting a war we should not be in? Both Democrats want to get out of the war and save Americans billions, but Sen. Obama's plans are much more feasible than Sen. Clinton's. While Mr. Samuelson is beating up on Sen. Obama his health care plan, for example, is much more affordable than Sen. Clinton's which REQUIRES that everyone participate in the plan.

Another one of Mr. Samuelson's points is that Sen. Obama's positions do not represent real change yet he contradicts himself by listing several somewhat radical changes on taxes, college funding and energy independence.

Sen. Obama does not claim to have all of the answers and he often says that it will take hard work and sacrifices from all of us working together to achieve our collective goals of making a better America. We can choose to fight each other and get no where or we can work out our differences and work together to achieve success. I know Sen. Obama is not perfect, but if we wait for the perfect presidential candidate we will be waiting forever. I do know that I can follow this man and give my best to make this a better country.

"he'll set a new tone in washington"
Oh,you mean that town he's been doing nothing in for the last five years?
    OK.
He'll set "a new tone" whatever that is.
    And then what?
    Then,LIKE MAGIC,the congress will hold hands,sing kumbaya and pass,and pass and pass...whoops!
    Forgot.
    The president HAS NO IDEAS!

IF CLINTON AND OBAMA HAVE SIMILAR AGENDA's WHy IS CLINTON'S AGENDA NOT categorized as narrow.

OBAMA's AGENDA IS WIDE and promotes unity. NO ONE IS Hypnotized, THEy just want CHANGE. AMERICANS HAVE ALWAyS resisted jet lag. CLINTONS BUSH CLINTONS. OBAMA is the only candidate tha can actually get his AGENDA through CONGRESS AND the SENATE. REMEMBER HILLARy WILL BE WORKING FOR OBAMA, so DO NOT WORRy. THE NATION's major problems will be TACKLED and CONQUERED by an OBAMA presidency. IF ARNOLD CAN MAKE IT CALIFORNIA THERE's NO TELLING HOW FAR OBAMA CAN GO and HOW MUCH HE CAN ACHIEVE.
I AM GLAD OBAMA IS NOT MAKING promises he can't keep.

    LET's LOOK AT THE FACTS.
OBAMA has shown he can organize millions of people into an organized and effetive political force.
He has made the correct judgements consistently throughout his campaign.
HIS TEAM IS A REFLECTION of HIM ORGANIZED HONEST AND HARD WORKING.
    CONSISTENT, GENUINE.

    LET"S LOOK AT HILLARy's campaign.
A lot of fighting and divisivness.
    A lot of firing's.
    A lot of bad JUDGEMENTS
CONFUSION AND pANIC as a result of bad judement and wrong decisions.
THE BLAME GAME. IT's your fault not its his fault, that's it you are FIRED.
LET GO RACIAL My destiny is more important.
It is a reflection of her style. BROAD AGENDA's, BIG plans, only to have them blocked because she was unable to unite factions in order to implement her agenda. COMBINE THAT WITH SCANDAL and you are left with no HOpE and a BUSH in the OVAL OFFICE.

BEING president IS ABOUT UNITING THE COUNTRy. THIS IS WHy not just anyone can become COMMANDER N CHIEF. BEING president involves making real time decisions very frequently. OBAMA HAS proven time and time again he has a "nack" for making a calm cool correct decisions in a real time enviornment. BE HONEST LOOK AT THE CONTRAST in CAMpaigns. THE FACTS ARE THERE.

THE MEDIA NEED TO REALIZE THAT THEy are a tool of indoctrination. ANy GOOD politician can manipulae the media in their favor. OBAMA AND BILL ARE VERy good politicians.

OBAMA is not a fortune teller he cannot have plans ready until he has his complete team together. ONE step at a time. TO GO INTO TOO MUCH DETAIL is a political trap because things change. OBAMA IS A pro and will not fall into that trap.

Mr Obama is full of hot air. He is impressing people with his speeches and promises which I am not buying, he never answers a tough question or sits there and thinks about it before he responds with his usual bable. If he is elected, his presidency will be a DISASTER, we will be worse off than we are now , if that is possible. He will be like a deer caught in the headlights with no where to go. Wake up people, he is not the candidate for job, people being brainwashed by his ideas will be regretting their decision come 2010 but by then it will be too late.

  • Posted By: mksl1 @ 02/20/2008 6:30:19 PM

Right now Obama is all things to all people. But as he gets more specific he just seems like a warmed over John Edwards. It would certaainly be a vision change but one that has already been rejected by the voters. And to top it off his own campaign managers ares stuck for an answer to the basic question - what has Obama accomplished? Five years in the senate and no evidence at all that he means what he says .He was a very passive senator.McCain is also a very good orator. He has also carefully cultivated a television style by repeatedly appearing on Letterman,Leno and Conan.Letterman loves McCain. And McCain has a very keen sense of humor. But above all he has the "gravitas" thing. In the debates he will speak in grand themes and demonstarate his far superior grasp of international affairs.Obama looks great against Hillary. But running against McCain will be much tougher.

I'm going to leave you alone, b/c you it's not fair for me to try to make sense to you - you won't get it. Just like John McCain doesn't get it. Barack taught Constitutional law for 3 years, I can't wait to see him debate John McCain on the merits of continuing this failed war policy! You'll see for yourself soon - One for the return of the UNITED States of America

Samuelson, and your point is? First, Obama includes me in finding the soluttion to our problems, unlike Hilary Clinton and McCain, who both assert their capabilities to single-handedly fight all and everything that threatens us. Second, Obama;s willingness to seek out America's diverse talents and pool together to solve our national impasses, is refreshing enough in contrasts to the lone gun slingers who continue the premise that ordinary people do not matter. If you do not see the the depth of this premise, you are not to blame, because you are steeped in the morasse of the past you take it for normalcy because you are afraid of the unfamiliar ways of doing things that may soon come to Washington----a coalition of ordinary Americans woriking together to advance their collective causes and the common good. Your article is so biased, it says a lot about how you have refused to indulge in introspective and objective thought. Let us meet here November 5th 2008 and compare notes.

When you talk about his lofty speeches it seems that somehow you have missed his central point. His goal is to set a new tone in Washington that will allow for compromise. Compromise will lead to passing some of the policy ideas that have been recommended by many politicians for two decades. He also talks about sacrifice and service. He expects that his supporters will get involved to make a difference. It is a recurring theme, and my sense is that he will create a way of encouraging them to follow thorugh. He seems to show some success with this in his campaign.

Obama is not selling some kind of "Silver Bullet" solution that everyone else has overlooked. He is saying that we can solve many of our problems by compromising, getting involved and making some sacrifices. Check the record, it is all in his speeches.

So don't look for incredible differences between his policy ideas and everyone elses. When it comes to the number, yep someone's going to have to pay for this and he is expecting it to be taxpayers... mostly the upper end of the range.

Many people seem ready to do it if they have a Leader they believe can deliver.

Well said. I am still trying to figure out why an educated syndicated journalist like Samuelson couldn't figure this out when most average Americans get it? Obama want's to stop the partisanship and return Washington to a time when congressmen were colleagues first, advesaries second. That is the major change Obama is preaching, and it's needed. he last 16 years of parrty-first politics has diminished the nation and it's citizens to the benefit of the parties and corporatism

  • Posted By: mksl1 @ 02/20/2008 7:58:59 PM

    obama will create compromise.
    Great.
Half baked ideas will rule the country because the president lacks any guiding principals or ideas other than"can't we all just get along?"
In truth it's the perfect formula for gridlock, not compromise.
In the abscence of strong,IDEA,driven leadership all you get is a vacuum that's filled with argument and gridlock.
    Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!

After reading "The Obama Delusion" I must applaud the insight and honesty that Robert Samuelson brings to the public. I couldn't agree with him more and I fear for the very reasons he has given why I am anti Obama. I for one am not dazzled by his rhetoric. I see a man who thinks he can fool all of the people all of the time. Not so. I just hope America and the American people wake up and smell the coffee before it is too late and not make him the next president.

    • Posted By: OH-IO for Obama @ 02/20/2008 7:58:55 PM

So then what is his evil sinister plan dixie chick, since he's only trying to trick ppl into something???

  • Posted By: dentrekin @ 02/20/2008 7:57:54 PM

Is it the President's job to have the ideas or is it his job to lead? Did Ronald Reagan offer original ideas? And W? Your premise is flawed -- we need leadership. There are plenty of good ideas already.

  • Posted By: sethwhite @ 02/20/2008 6:53:11 PM

This article misses the point. The author himself admitted that he was won over by Obama's talk and rhetoric. The whole point of this cadidacy is what Barack Obama insists is a bottom-up, rather than a top-down approach. If Obama manages to pass half of his "boilerplate" progressive agenda, he will enact enormous and lasting change in our society. Bill Clinton attempted to change health care in 92 and failed because the Clintons could not work with others, and because there was not a demand for heath care from the American people. If Obama succeeds it will be because he is capable of moving people to go out and do somethine -- attend a rally, call their friends, vote or caucus, donate money to a cause. I've never participated in politics to this extent in my life, but I found myself attending a rally, emailing friends, going to caucus and even donating my own money to a political campaign. If this kind of motivation carries beyond this election, and the American people see a president who inspires them to action, then Obama will be the most transformative president since Reagan, and in the same category as Kennedy and Roosevelt.

  • Posted By: mksl1 @ 02/20/2008 7:37:04 PM

Hey,Hey no call for comparing O-Bama-lama to Hitler! Somebody here else compared him to Castro.
That's out of bounds.O-Bama-lama may be just be a overly telegenic stuffed suit motivational speaker but he ain't no mass murderer!
Oprah should give him a show.
We've had enough of Dr. Phil.

    • Posted By: coolrepublica @ 02/20/2008 7:55:37 PM

It is not out of bound. Why should I not compare his abiliity to insire people to Hilter's. Why should I not caompre his ability to give hope to hilter's Hope is hope. no matter who is is giving it. If obama supporters insist on telling Americans that he is the answer to all evil in the world because he can inspire them, I say bring it. Speaking is one thing doing is aanother. The majority does not always know best. It has been proven in Germany, Russia, North Korea, China, Indonesia. Philippines. Haiti. These are countries were the majority of people got hope and inspiration from great speakers and led their country into disaster. That is why we have ssuper delegaetes. To stop people from voting on emotion not facts.

    "Obama is a good talker"
    The word is SPEAKER.
    He gives and makes SPEECHES.
Actually he's an orator. He's good enough at speech making that he should be considered something more than your run of the mill political speechmaker.
Too bad the guy has accomplished nothing in the senate but expects us to believe the presidency will transform him into THE MAN OF ACTION!
Oh,and don't pay any mind to those warmed over walter mondale ideas he's been serving up.
That would only confuse the dreamers who fantasize about some ghostlike, nebulous "change" that will occur with the coming of the O-bama-lama presidency.
Heck,if he wrecks the economy like Jimmy Carter at least he can turn water into wine.
That is after he's finished walkin' on it.

  • Posted By: dentrekin @ 02/20/2008 7:53:39 PM

Is it the president's job to have the ideas or is it his job to lead? Please tell me that you think Reagan had an original idea. And W? Your entire premise is inherently flawed -- we need leadership. There are plenty of good ideas already.

  • Posted By: CaliforniaGirl @ 02/20/2008 7:53:17 PM

Mr Obama is blinding people with his sweet talk, sure he's personable but we are not electing a beauty queen here. If he gets the nomination and goes on to beat McCain, his presidency will be a disaster. He will be like a deer in the headlights with no where to run. I am not buying his speeches and promises, I just don't know how many people have been brain washed by his views and ideas. People need to wake up or it will be too late. Like someone else here posted earlier, we will be wishing Hillary Clinton had won just like we wished Al Gore had won back in 2000.

  • Posted By: lgwinkler @ 02/20/2008 3:44:12 PM

I am glad Obama has less "political experience", at least that will probably mean he isn't as corrupt, dishonest, partisan, or out of touch as the rest. I also think it is great that he is full of hope, promise, and enthusiastic about becoming president. Is he supposed to be just as insincere, lame, boring, and unenthused as Clinton and McCain? Have we all become that apathetic? Whatever happened to people in this country feeling good and hopeful about who they are voting for? I don't remember the last time I've even felt good about a candidate no matter how great their supposed plans and proposals were, if they don't actually believe in what they are saying, you can sense it. I am just like most Americans who have heard and seen Obama. He is inspiring, honest, and a welcomed change!

    • Posted By: Obamaisagoodtalker @ 02/20/2008 7:48:15 PM

Be careful how you toss that word honest and Obama in the same sentence.

  • Posted By: mksl1 @ 02/20/2008 7:45:05 PM

    akatz,
    Let's see.
You don't care about O-bama-lama's ideas.
You don't care wether that he wasted five years in the senate accomplishing nothing.
You don't care that other than make a vote against the war he did nothing to stop it.
Didn't mount a campaign or use all that "hope" to introduce any legislation.'
That leaves as your only reason to support him the fact that he's telegenic.
He's good on tv.Like a guy who's just PLAYING the president and doesn't need any bothersome list of initiatives, accomplishments or even any ideas.
Hey! It's just the presidency of the United States dude, right?
So let's just pass the doobie and WING IT!

Its very funny and hilarious when you see the word "Change" scaring the crap out of people like Samuelson and his cohorts. best entertainment i've had in years!!.
The downside to all these is they are supposed to be educated and a bit knowledgeable than your average Joe. He has proven that he is a simple-mind indeed!!. Their simple idiom is; the devil you know is better than the angel you dont know, what utter rubbish!. You lived under George Bush for 8 years for or crying out loud. You lying bigots can scream on the highest moutain but Change is still coming to America because this time we own the movement!!. For once "Mr average Joe nobody" holds the power to the politics of America and we are saying No to the politics of fear!! No to the politics of hopelessness!! . Thanks to all the people who say that barack is just empty rhetoric - and that he is an unknown quantity you've actually confirmed to me that barack is worth voting for because he's not mutated yet!! unlike senators Clinton and McCain who have sacrificed their humanity for political and financial expediency!! Thanks Samuelson you gave me the boost that l needed to actually Vote Obama

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/20/2008 4:19:11 PM

The word 'change' does not scare people. It is the lack of a firm explanaition on what will change, how it will change, and to what extend. Communism is a change from capitalism - does a rational idividual embrace that change? The article simply points out that Obama fails to give substance to what and how he will change.

In 2000 evangelicals elected Bush because he was huggable. He was a guy that shread their values. They like him. Look what that got us. Please do not elect people on how much fun you could have with him at a bar. A presidential race is not a BFF aution. Obama will bring as much change as laundry mat.

Obamamanians are the new evangelicals. Thanks for nothing.
