The story of Barack Obama is a twist on a classic tale "The Emperor's New Clothes". . . in this case, the masses, unwilling to do a modicum of homework, are hoodwinked by a candidate's empty promises. Barack lacks both experience and substance. He is totally void of any legislative accomplishment. The race between Hillary and Barack is a choice between: Hope vs. False Hope; Results vs. Rhetoric; Pragmatism vs. Pretentiousness; Solutions vs. Snake Oil.
There's an old Irish prayer: "When you pray for potatoes, have a hoe in your hand"
Thank you, Mr. Samuelson, for stating the obvious. I hope it's not too late.

Interesting analogy, but I think it's more like the Wizard of Oz, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"
I'm a registered Democrat, I want the best candidadte for my party, not the candidate of the month. Does anyone else see the irony in Obama being the candidate of change, and then trotting out Ted Kennedy who's been in Congress for close to 50 years as a major endorsement?

Comment: I love Samuelson and Hillary. I am anti-Obama and for holding Obama to a higher standard than Hillary. Samuelson alone espouses a higher standard than me.

I am nothing more than non sequitur psycho-babble sophistry masquerading as "keen insight" "rigorous soul-searching" eurekas.

Holding tenaciously to a petrified position, despite the lack of logical, rational support or justification for it, is a commonplace stance in the arena of Religion and Politics. I do not quarrel with anyone's right to zealously cling to such a position if that is how they genuinely feel. My comments merely point out that this does not stand as a compelling persuasive argument as to why anyone else should jump on the same train.

The Clinton campaign accused Obama of plagerizing the Massachusettes Governor. Your article makes it sound as if the Clintons are accusing Senator Obama of stealing their ideas. Talk about obscuration.

You need to get off the fossil train and step into the 21st century. You really need to do more home work and quit being a corporate weasel. Do some research on how much money (Billions) is stolen from SS and the 2 MC's by congress every year. These programs would be solvent if not for the thefts. Also do some research on the fact that the rich and conservatives in this country preach capitalism and free markets but in all reality practice socialisim by securing government hand outs in the form of subsidies. I think sir, that you do not do your home work and probaly get most of your news from talk show host. Let us not be the ones to turn hope into an unbelievability and a dirty word. Let us be the ones who change the world with hope and physical action. Let us not be the ones who keep dancing to the rethoric of fear politics. We will have a new president and he will be a man and he will not be a republican! Can't you see that? Now call up your buddy Mush Bimbo drop some scrips, smoke some cigars and talk about how it used to be when you could fool most of the people most of the time. A new day is on the horizon, get used to it! It will become a reality. Better yet why don't you do something really racdial and do some real reporting? Real leaders are of the people not manufactured as Clint, Mac and GWB are. When most people are voting 2 - 1 democrate this year it is a far gone conclusion. Your time is over, our time is here. You had your chance at the wheel and you weighted it. It is now falling off its axis because of the unfair weight placed on the American people! The union must be saved. Get on the wagon!

We would all be able to make up our minds about O'Bama if he would just stop all the speeches and take some real questions and answer them as Hillary does. I recently watched some of one of his televised campaigns and really got tired of hearing him go on and on. All inspirational which some of that is fine, but I really would like to know more than that. How can you compare what each candidate has in mind to do, if one of them is not telling you. Orator's are great, you see them on stages all over the world. Even Hitler was a great orator. You also see them on stages in the entertainment world. I want to know what is behind the rhetoric. Is all this rhetoric because he wants to be the first Black President? Have you listened in on Black Preachers rhetoric? Their rhetoric is very inspirational, but some are genuine and some are not. We had a scandal here when it was found that a very popular black preacher was stealing. He went to jail.

    • Posted By: OH-IO for Obama @ 02/20/2008 5:22:24 PM

So that means that all orators that are black are thieves??? What is your logic dude? And if you did listen to his speech, which one was it? If you were talking about his speech last night, you've lost all credibility (as if you had some to begin with). Either you are a die-hard republican who will not vote in the Dem primary anyway, or you are a Hillary supporter who doesn't bother to even take the time to listen to the other side before making up your mind who to vote for? I must admit, I feel that way every time I force myself to listen to a republican speech, but you cannot claim to be an informed voter if you don't look at all sides of the issues and candidates...

I agree with your article; Obama's legislative record is in no way revolutionary. Sure, he's passed acts on increased transparency and deeper genomic research, but such stances are typical of many legislators. To be honest, there are few deep divides between our three candidates, and perhaps between politicians in general. We all want prosperity, hope, improvement, the whole nine yards. I truly believe that any number of governors or senators would make decent political judgments and logical choices as president.

Campaign slogans and high standards aside, though, what Obama brings to the table is charismatic leadership and renewed image for America. Yeah, it's no fair; he isn't smarter, more creative, or more original. But he has a natural talent for mobilizing people with just words, an ability that puts him, like it or not, a cut above the rest. The rest are legislators; he's a leader. His invocation of "change", perhaps, doesn't reflect himself- at the core, he's not really something new- but rather, the change in America that his presence will bring. The leader can talk the talk, and, hopefully, his followers will walk the walk. It's a mutual exchange.

    • Posted By: mfgillia @ 02/20/2008 5:21:19 PM

A leader generally has a track record. What exactly has he lead so far?

  • Posted By: Scott Baclawski @ 02/20/2008 5:16:28 PM

    Robert,
Look beyond your abacus at the real issue here...when the hard decisions need to be made...who will and who will not be beholden to special interest lobbists? The Senator from Illinois...that's who. And when it comes to social security...which is, it seems, your only point against Barack Obama, who do you feel will make the hard decisions to save social security...the "third Rail' of politics? Senator McCain? Heck...he already qualifies for SS. You think he's be willing to cut some of his benifits? Does he really need SS benefits? No...he doesn't. But will he call for a higher retirement age, higher SS taxes on wealthy reciepients? No...you know he won't. So let's play it straight here...Barack is the ONLY choise for Prresident.

An ironic title, given that I found the column both rhetorical and unrealistic -if not downright amusing- in places. Who knows what subtle political-cultural streams influence the confluence of intellectual honesty, and Mr. Samuelson's next paycheck? The essay is laced with incendiary words, some of which are functionally inaccurate: (1) "By Obama's own moral standards, Obama fails" (i) Hello? Morality is quality, not a quantity. You then go on to summarize his ??????economic plan of at least 12 points???.??? And presumably I am to understand this is a moral violation given that he admonishes similar in your preceding paragraph. Heads up, Bob: this is simply campaign-politics-as-usual. Perhaps you might have considered (but rejected); (2) "By Obama's own practical standards, Obama fails". Whatever one thinks of these ideas, they're standard goody-bag politics: something for everyone. (ii) Mr. Samuelson could also have safely added (and perhaps was morally obliged to add) "Whatever one thinks of these ideas, they're standard goody-bag journalism: something for everyone."; (3) They're so similar to many Clinton proposals that her campaign put out a news release accusing Obama of plagiarizing (iii) Perhaps Republicans should have accused Bill Clinton of the same when he co-opted virtually the entire GOP platform. Heads up, Bob: this is simply campaign-politics-as-usual. It may get even nastier, you know, negative campaigns and all. This may be a foreign concept to journalists, but it is not unfamiliar to legitimate analysts. (4) A favorite Obama line is that he will tell "the American people not just what they want to hear but what we need to know." (iv)Attention wordsmiths: ???will??? is future tense. He is not saying ??? I am now telling the American people not just what they want to hear but what we need to know???. I believe most circumspect and intellectually honest listeners would interpret his meaning as referencing his future actions as president. Heads up, Bob: this is simply campaign-politics-as-usual. (5) Political candidates routinely indulge in exaggeration, pandering, inconsistency and self-serving obscuration. Clinton and McCain do. The reason for holding Obama to a higher standard is that it's his standard and also his campaign's central theme. He has run on the vague promise of "change," but on issue after issue???immigration, the economy, global warming???he has offered boilerplate policies that evade the underlying causes of the stalemates. (v) The latter half of twentieth-century administrations were essentially run on boilerplate policies. How do you think we got to where we are. Of course there are going to be inconsistencies in any campaign. Heads up, Bob: this is simply campaign-politics-as-usual. Sitting presidents have been impeached. Shall we impeach this candidate based on your boilerplate journalism? Of course not. That itself would be a rather poor moral standard. I

Mr Samuelson has hit the nail right on the head! there is much rhetoric and little substance to the obama campaign. His platform is one of gross generalities. how could even some Americans be duped into buying into a campaign of empty promises and no specifics. his specifics are in themselves generalities. regardless of his race in my opinion he is just not a legitimate player on the world scene and we would be laughed off the negotiating table by more seasoned world leaders, the consequence of which would be no laughing matter for our great Nation. Oh by the way I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PROUD OF THIS NATION in contrast to his wife who is only been proud since he is running and at no other time has she been proud of our great nation.

    • Posted By: reginanation @ 02/20/2008 11:41:15 AM

      • Posted By: miamiman @ 02/20/2008 12:29:23 PM

experience ,respect mixed with a healthy dose of fear are some of the factors that make a leader effective on the world stage. Mr Obama has already demonstrated unforgivable weakness in suggenting unilateral talks initiated by the US with our nemisis nations. He obviously knows nothing of the realities of negotiation and diplomacy for one. even Hillary who I despise has more ability in this area

i DID NOT ASK WHAT MAKES A LEADER I ASKED YOU TO NAME ONE. MCCAIN, HILLARY? GIVE ME A BREAK. LIARS AND "YES MEN". HUCKABY IS THE BEST THING WE HAVE NEXT TO OBAMA AND I AM AFRAID HE WOULD MAKE US GO TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY AND DURING FOOTBALL I SKIP. hehe

If you want business as usual, go for it with Clinton or McCain. If you want to free our system of vote-buying lobbyists vote Obama. If you want our candidates to continue to be beholden to large corporate interests continue with the campaign financing laws as they are. If you want totally socialized medicine go for Clinton. If you want shared responsibility for medical care, go for Obama. If you want ststus qou go for mccain anad Clinton. In fact, just go for McCain and he can keep you in Iraq the rest of your grandkid's natural life...you know, the war Obama had the good sense to oppose from the start.

Your article does not hold water.

    • Posted By: mfgillia @ 02/20/2008 5:04:29 PM

Yes Obama is fond of saying he didn't vote for the war. What he failed to mention was that he wasn't even a senator yet and didn't have the option to vote either for or against it.. He did state at the time though he wasn't sure which way he would vote. Look it up..

    • Posted By: beaker87 @ 02/20/2008 4:36:56 PM

It's easy for Mr. Obama to say he opposed the war, he wasn't even in the senate to actually vote on it. It's easy to stand by and oppose something when you don't have to make the actual decision. But then looking at Mr. Obama's voting record it, he didn't vote on almost 40% of the votes, it appears he doesn't vote on a whole lot anyway

  • Posted By: Political1 @ 02/20/2008 5:03:54 PM

This article misses the entire point of the Obama campaign and, indeed, the Obama movement. People are rallying around Obama not because his "10 point plan" is so new or original, but because they believe he has the leadership skills, charisma, and public support to actually get it done. That's the difference. If you don't believe me, see Caroline Kennedy's endorsement in the NY Times. She wrote a very credible, convincing endorsement of Obama while actually saying very little about his policies or political agenda; but then, she should know a thing or two about charismatic, credible leadership. Let's face it: there are only so many ways to run this country today, given the importance of a healthy economy and the fact that our forefathers intentionally (and brilliantly) built a certain amount of gridlock into our political system. The differences are really at the margins, on controversial social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, and on policy issues such as how much we???re going to tax people at both ends of the bell curve. If there is a defining issue in this election, it has to be the war in Iraq. On that issue, Obama has distinguished himself from both Clinton and McCain by consistently opposing the war from the beginning. And unlike Hillary Clinton, I don???t see how one can legitimately assert that Obama???s record and policies don???t match his rhetoric on this key issue.
