I agree with your article; Obama's legislative record is in no way revolutionary. Sure, he's passed acts on increased transparency and deeper genomic research, but such stances are typical of many legislators. To be honest, there are few deep divides between our three candidates, and perhaps between politicians in general. We all want prosperity, hope, improvement, the whole nine yards. I truly believe that any number of governors or senators would make decent political judgments and logical choices as president.

Campaign slogans and high standards aside, though, what Obama brings to the table is charismatic leadership and renewed image for America. Yeah, it's no fair; he isn't smarter, more creative, or more original. But he has a natural talent for mobilizing people with just words, an ability that puts him, like it or not, a cut above the rest. The rest are legislators; he's a leader. His invocation of "change", perhaps, doesn't reflect himself- at the core, he's not really something new- but rather, the change in America that his presence will bring. The leader can talk the talk, and, hopefully, his followers will walk the walk. It's a mutual exchange. For the record, I'm an Obama supporter.

All of the observations about Obama's lack of real and meaningful economic programs bother me as well. But, it is time for a complete change in Washington, and while both Mc Cain and Clinton have been around for many, many years, they too offer us no meaningful hope of changing the status quo. hopefully Obama will bring on consultants the like of Robert Reich and others to fill the positions for which his knowledge is woefully lacking.

It can't get any worse than George W. Bush. The "W" stands for woefuly wrong.

Mr Samuelson, Much rhetoric and no substance = G.W. Bush. Sen. Obama is right, "same old, same old"...except it will be him. The media has done a vast diservice to both Sen. Clinton and the American People. Our country deserves better than this. It's easier to be sheep than to take the time to examine their records. One has worked to better this country and its people and the other lacks any credentials. Sen Obama's aggressive speech about "words" with the crazed look in his eyes seems to have been lost on everyone. He seemed angry that he was even questioned. Pretty arogant he appears.

I have been voting since 18 (now 43) and I am getting more and more frustrated by the same old rhetoric by either party. You are correct about S.S and Medicare, etc. I have been telling people this for years and they look at me as if I'm presenting a physics lecture. It is our responsibility (the voters) to grasp the complexity of the issues, the hard choices needed, etc. It appears the media and the voting public wants everything short, sweet and fast like the fast food we so enjoy with a disregard to details and specifics. That being said the politicians have even a greater responsibility to do the right thing regardless if they get voted in. Whatever???.. It???s just very disheartened not see anything changing from either party in the near future.

This article is very well written. It's too bad it's not worth reading. I would not have wasted my time writing this. If you don't know where a candidate stands on something use www.votehelp.org . I really think this was a total waste of time. You can speculate as to which candidate I am pulling for, but it will be pure speculation. This is the type of useless information that hurting the party now, because uneducated, uninformed, lazy readers will take this as the gospel and preach it to their friends, spouses, loves one etc. Bad job. Very bad job.

As a black woman, I was torn between the two, because they both made a great case. My vote is sacred to me, and I made a point of finding outside sources to validate who I should support. I must say I was a little alarmed when I realised that Obama's greatest accomplishments were running extremely successful campaigns. I then went to his rally and realised he didn't listen, and often didn's address the question asked directly, but rather made oratory emotional remarks. Hillary is not captivating in style, but really listens, and that is important to me. It is probably why her resume is over-flowing with accomplishments that changed people's lives. Even her attempt at reforming healthcare in the 1990's - though unsuccessful, started the movement that has brought us here today - where universal healthcare is legitimately on the table. She is also very independent, and is an eagle-style leader - very visionary. So I support Hillary, and hope she wins. If she doesn't I hope Obama will seek her advice on issues. Since he would be president, he would not be moving on to the next campagin, and may finally settle down and get something accomplished. As for those who think he will be squashed by McCain, research how he won his first political contest - dude eliminated damn near everyone from the ballot, so there was virtually no competition. Do not be fooled, this man is a shrew politician and he is ready for McCain!

Comment: During the first eight (8) years of his elected service Barack Obama sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced:
      ??? 233 regarding healthcare reform,
??? 125 on poverty and public assistance,
      ??? 112 crime fighting bills,
      ??? 97 economic bills,
      ??? 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
      ??? 21 ethics reform bills,
      ??? 15 gun control,
??? 6 veterans??? affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included
      1. **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,
      2. **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,
      3. **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
      4. **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law,
      5. **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
      He's not just a talker. He's a doer.

How about JFK, W.J.Clinton, G.W.Bush, ... were they a 'known quantity' in your standard??

Aren't Washington politicians all 'known quantities'??

Seriously though, did America succeed with the election of G.W.Bush, TWICE??

So, you would rather select a 'known quantity' G.W.Bush, the most divisive and destructive one the country ever had, over the full of potential, B.Obama??

I will take Obama over W. any day, any time.

I don't trust your judgement one iota.

Oy vey - how long does this silly complaining have to go on? We all know that the policy differences between Obama and Clinton (and Edwards) are small. However, the differences are important. Improved access to health care versus imposed mandates. Robert Reich has explained why Obama???s health care plan (and social security preservation plan) are better than HRC's - please wander over to his blog and read about it there. Further, the formidable team of David Blumenthal, David Cutler, and Jeffrey Liebman have thoroughly analyzed the Obama health care plan and it is solid (please google it and read). You cannot say that you want him to be specific and when he boils down the detailed plans he has presented all along into bullet points you complain that they are too similar to HRCs. How much differentiation can you do in a sentence? Obama has shown that he has solutions (some similar some different in key ways) but he also has leadership capacity in a totally different league than HRC. Many of us who are working as volunteers for Obama have never been involved in politics before and we will continue to work to push these policies ahead from the grassroots because we really are ready for change. This is not a cult my friends, this is democracy in action - you may not have seen it in your lifetime because it is rare and hard to achieve. As my dear father always says, "American Participatory Democracy is the most radical political system ever put into practice and the jury is still out on whether we can live up to the challenge of making it a success." I encourage you to stop the poo-pooing and get on board to fight for substantial improvements in the lives of all those regular folks you know with no health care and no pension and no savings and no chance to go to college like you did. Obama is listening - send your ideas on how to make it work and get involved. You will never regret trying to make America better.

    • Posted By: norpoul @ 02/20/2008 4:02:53 PM

There is a very simple reason why Univeral Healthcare cannot be
voluntary. There are currently people without health insurance who
could afford it. They (usually the younger people) feel that they are
immune to disease or accident. Then, when they do have a serious
disease of crippling accident they end up in hospital emergency
rooms, and those of us who do have insurance eventually pick up
the bill. To make Universal Healthcare a reality, it must be mandatory
so that, like all insurance programs, the risk and costs are spread
out over the ill and the healthy and cover everyone in emergencies.

Ok. Let's say I agree with your skepticism; what options do we have? More of the same, whether it is Clinton or McCain( same ideas--more war and benefits to the rich).
And American people surely know that, it takes more than rhetoric to fix the economy, healthcare and the "mess in Iraq". So, why not give the torch to the optimist, hope monger and the intelligent Senator? His campaign organization ability speaks volumes about his ability.

  • Posted By: pmcs @ 02/20/2008 4:01:31 PM

Here is another for you to consider. Elect Obama on his positive inspiration, which is a net positive because most of his policy matters matters are a draw with those of his opponents. If we don't like him, then get rid of him in four years.

You and I were stupid enough to send W. back to WH after his first four years.

Aren't we more smart now AFTER W's eight years??

Congratulations! Finally someone from media telling 'truth or rather reality'. I am sure people like "orbitalplooker' will call you racist. For Blacks 'even someone opens mouth they are labeled as 'racist'..
Obama-Osama is nothing better than a 'car salesman'. He has no agenda, no plan, no vision. He stole the lines form Martin Luther King " I have a dream". He stole lines from Hillary and his buddy Deval Patirck, his buddy. I guess, he ran out of BS....ing. He is running on 'I didn't vote for the war". You idiots who are voting for him should know " he was in the political process when the war started". Hillary supported the president like every national should in times of national crisis. I will tell these Obamas and Osamas don't care for national security. I will qoute what his wife said about this country " I feel proud now for my country because Obama doing well" So the Osamas love this country is conditonal. Tell me if it is not Phoney, and crafty. He is a very crafty man. His foreign policy experience is " studying in Madrasa in Indenesia". You guys want to give him the nomination. What about all these promises he is making? How is he going to pay for it bringing money for "Kenyea"? He talks about not having "unity' in this country. He forgot because it has unity 'He has the audacity to run for the white House. It is not possible in any other country. Hey you guys may not like Hillary but you don't have to vote for this 'yard ape' in someone else's word. You forgot all the good years of "Bill Clinton" era. You guys disrespect him, call him 'racist' How dare you. How dare you compare this car sales man to "JFK"? By respecting Bill look what happened to Al Gore and loser Kerry. Why he doesn't make "Oprah the BS" make his vice president? It will make you happy. He is a danger to this society. He has nothing but all talk. He can't walk the talk. I am a die hard democrat and an Asian. I will vote for McCain. Osama will raise so much taxes it will go over our roof you know why he is promising everything to everyone.
He will create more 'entitlement' for the people don't want to work, make babies out of wedlock and can't afford to have children and don't deserve to be a parent. We are paying for their laziness, and will even pay more if you choose him.

    • Posted By: Lorretta @ 02/20/2008 3:10:44 PM

Okay, maybe this guy is a little racist.

      • Posted By: maxboy @ 02/20/2008 4:01:01 PM

Like I said before when someone tells the truth they become 'racist'. It's a fond word for the so-called liberals. I hope when he gets the nomination Republicans beat the crap out of him. Hey why don't you call his wife 'unpatriotic' when she said ' this is the first time I am proud of my country'. So, all these BS about 'so-called unity' is bunch of BS by him, his wife and media? He has done nothing for Civil Rights but not ashamed to steal lines from MLK Jr.

    • Posted By: kamakiriad @ 02/20/2008 2:59:19 PM

The fact that you call him "Osama" negates pertty much any legitimacy your post might otherwise have. It's childish and pedantic.

Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.

Records of these two candidates should be scrutinized in order to make an informed decision.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found @ the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov, but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
    1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
    2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
    3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
    4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
    5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
    6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
    7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
    8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
    9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
    10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
    11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
    12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
    13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
    14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
    15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton 's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
    17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
    19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
    20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record.

NOTE: Obama voted to extend NAFTA to South America, Obama voted to increase credit card interest rates to 30%, Obama voted to send subisidies to the oil, coal & nuclear companies (over $13 Billion). Obama voted to increase student loan rates and fees. He voted to allow the Bush administration to suspend the troop withdrawal. But this is your American who is for the working class people. GROW UP and quit drinking the Kool-Aid.

        To: aleafirst - etc.
Re-read the list from the Library of Congress site - there are 150 pieces of legislation that she (Clinton) has introduced, many of which are not as frivolous as your "top 20" list provides. Nice try bonehead.

Again, you want to elect the 'attack dogs' who are busy attacking their political enemies; who are busy dividing the country into pieces (say Rove and Cheney and W. --- ring a bell??). You want a candidate who is aming at 50+alpha of the people as their political base???

You are worth not a single cent. Newsweek is best served to fire you.
