The person who posted that they felt they were watching "The Candidate" is spot on. This is scary. I don't need "Tony Robbins" as my president. I don't need a mentor with little experience as my president. I fear we are going to wake up with another GWB or McCain. I wanted to vote for Obama but, really after waking up and scrutinizing the real problems we face and his actual record and speeches...I just cannot gamble right now. I

Robert J. Samuelson, I know you get paid to say what you say, but if you know all these things and have such a fantastic delusion that you get paid to write I wonder why you didn't run for president? I could be just as delusional as you and Obama and Clinton, both of them!

    OBAMA RECORDS
What has Obama done in the 3 years he's been in the Senate?
During the first eight months of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced 233 regarding healthcare reform, 125 on poverty and public assistance, 112 crime fighting bills, 97 economic bills, 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills, 21 ethics reform bills, 15 gun control, 6 veterans affairs and many others. His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law), **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law), **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law), **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.
In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record. . . .

    CLINTON RECORDS
Senator Clinton, who has served one full term (6yrs.) has managed to author and pass into law 20 twenty pieces of legislation. These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress (www.thomas.loc.gov), but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you: 1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site. 2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month. 3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. 4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall. 5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson. 6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea. 7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day. 8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day. 9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death. 10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship. 11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship. 12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program. 13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda. 14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death. 15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11. 17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries. 19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care. 20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

dmpenny: Brilliant analysis OF THE FACTS that the author ignores. If people will stop reading this stuff - and go to Obama's web site - there is a treasure trove of his positions on everything, from the enviornment to health care to the war to science, etc.

Go there often and you can keep track on where he stands
on that particular day. He's pragmatic and sort of drifts with
        the wind.

In order to make change, Obama needs to get elected. Hence, for the time being, he needs to be a politician. There is nothing in his background to suggest that he lacks either integrity or talent. The man has run a hell of a campaign. He knows how to organize to get the damn thing done. Clinton, on the other hand, makes one tactical or psychological error after another. For instance, calling him a plagiarist when the man from whom he was supposed to have plagiarised stood ready to defend him, looked petty. Mr. Samuelson, if you consider Clinton and Obama not far apart on some policies, why do you prefer the candidate who repels rather than the one who attracts? To say that their similar policies on some issues indicate that Obama falls short of his own standard is to miss the point that this election is about emotional IQ. Obama has it; Clinton does not. No one on the planet has the background to grasp the compexity of the American presidency. If time spent in Washington correlates with ability to lead, then Dick Cheney is our man. Trusting that the way he has run his campaign is an indicaton of his administrative ability, I argue that Obama will appoint good people to address domestic as well as international issues. jmcschmidt@hotmail.com

You are skipping over the major issue. The U.S. is engaged in a war of agression which is stupid and a crime against humanity. This is the major issue and should not ever be ignored.

It is about time that someone in the media came out and stated everything that I have discussed with my husband, Obama is well spoken but shows little to no record of accomplishments that makes him stand out as a presidential candidate. I have been an executive in corporate America for a number of years and I have hired countless associates to fill high level positions and the best gauge to determine if someone has the ability to do well at a given position is to see what they have accomplished in their past. I do not see the list of accomplishments I feel a presidential candidate should have in Obama. As a leader the worst thing that you can do is not make a decision Obama has done this over a 130 times in the Senate he has voted present opposed to making a decision and being accountable for that decision. We need to review the facts of the situation, because making decision based on ones emotions will lead to a poor decision which is why we as a country have as many problems as we do currently, and stating the facts is not negative campaigning it is merely the truth.

Can Obama catch Osama? How can Mr. Obama be a good candidate for the presidency with zero foreign policy experience? Remember we elected one before without a clue? I feel this whole Obama thing is mostly without substance and lot of it ???media hype. Every political event that Mr. Obama attends is such a media savvy, scripted and orchestrated affair. His arrival, getting on the stage, the background faces, all of it done on cue with the help of consultants and managers like in a movie production, with perfect pitch and timing for the newscast footage, for the maximum effect--reminiscent of Hitler's big frenzied rallies in Berlin??? using all the elements of the stagecraft. Although he's extremely short on substance, in these days of slick marketing, Mr. Obama has so far proven that he's great at running campaigns. Remember we've tried that one before? What we need right now is substance, substance and more substance to deal with worsening problems in the country, rather than all the foolish talk, and Obama style phantasmagoria. US is now 40th in the world in infant mortality, in longevity 41st! We are quickly on our way to becoming a third world country! Someone said that US has become "the richest third world country in the world!" What we need now is a person like Hillary Clinton who has a sober manner and a practical head on her shoulders. Mr. Obama is so dependent on media to prop him up, and Mr. Obama's image seemed so well manufactured for the consumption and the manipulation of the public, his politics looking more and more like a Hollywood production than a real life political event. While Mr. Obama's message is about change, what Mr. Obama really does seemed to be steeped in corporate media that cheered us along in a very big way to the quagmire in Iraq. Mr. Obama also claims to be MLK and even JFK, without having done tiniest fraction of the vast accomplishments of MLK or JFK. Do you really want to go back to those tragic times of American history? Mr. Obama even lacks a sustentative legislative record. But for American media, deeds have little value if you have the right image. I watch Mr. Obama's rise in alarm for the sake of America's future. His hubris is unsurpassed in American politics. I find him and his message without a clear political logic or details, more suited for TV audience, no discussion of issues, programs or policies, rather his speeches are full of name dropping and all sorts of claims, rich in platitudes and slogans. How come Mr. Obama's embracing the Kennedy Camelot of the 60's is considered going forward by the media, and if Hillary Clinton looks back to the 90's for guidance??? now that's considered going backwards?

Obama is not a media creation. The media is just reacting to the numbers of people who support him.

      • Posted By: Geonewsweek @ 02/20/2008 3:49:38 PM

I agree the media has not created Obama. The Obama phenomenon has started from grass roots. The media felt force to report on it, and now that it has gone to an unanticipated level, some, like Robert, want to shut it down. We are smart enough to see this. By the way, you should see Clinton chanting "Yes we will" by her self on you tube, with no one energised to support her except a few flags after her 5th try!. "Yes we can" came from the people, not Obama. Hillary is only imitating Obama in desperation.. and "yes we will" is not inspiring... That´s what Clinton can´t understand. .

Obama dances to the highest bidders. He talks about change, but he only mentions the word change instead of specific changes.

  • Posted By: Adam-NYC @ 02/20/2008 1:29:35 PM

I love this type of cynic speak where people try to bring down Obama as if his record exists in a vacuum. Hillary just running would split the country like a hot knife through butter. McCain wants to keep us in a war we cannot afford and essentially repeat the demise of every other historic world power that drained its resources trying to defend the world. Obama is the common sense candidate. He govern well because he has the pulse of the elite as well as the downtrodden. We have had Bush/Clinton since 1980 folks! 1980, and Bush Sr. ran the CIA even before that. Change is not just a fun thing to chant at a rally. Its is needed badly by this nation, and Obama can give us the cleanest break with the politics of the past generation.

Holy cow! A presidential candidate who doesn't offer real solutions? Outrageous! Wake up, Samuelson. Obama, Clinton, McCain - they're ALL catering to the lowest-common denominator right now because that's what being elected President of the United States (sadly) requires. Advocating on behalf of real solutions and substantive debate (e.g., Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul) is a good way to knock yourself out of a national campaign. Obama shouldn't be singled out simply because his rhetoric resonates more fully than that of his rivals, or that he's so shrewdly taken advantage.

  • Posted By: ready for a change @ 02/20/2008 3:48:05 PM

It is fairly apparent that a large part of Obama's appeal is that he is NOT Hillary Clinton!!! How so many Democrats can forget Bill Clinton's scandle-plagued days in the White House is unbelievable. Does any sane person really want to return to that type of environment! Certainly, the best way to guarantee another Republican administration is for the Democrats to select devisive Hillary as their candidate!! I would also note that for someone who claims to be so ready to lead "day one", she has done a miserable job of running her own campaign!

I guessing Mr. Samuelson's didn't watch Obama's 45 minute motivational and policy speech last night in Houston. Obama's campaign method is about empowering people with motivation and inspiration. I'm sure you've heard him tell his supporters to be the change they want to be. Empowering people is what effective leaders do. Our present leadership, both Democratic and Republican, have failed at trying to motivate people to get things done and have gave into corporate interest. Believe it or not, that same failed leadership is the reason why our econonmy is having some many issues now. Its not just the "housing crisis" as the media pondets like to put it. Clearly, Obama "rethoric" instills a need for change for 7+ years of failed, weak, and fear-mongering leadership. I also like the fact that he once worked as a Civil Rights attorney, which is far better than the failed CEO we have now.

  • Posted By: schrieber @ 02/20/2008 3:47:04 PM

The obstacle to moving forward politically in this country has nothing to do with a lack of specific ideas or agendas, and everything to do with a lack of consensus. Obama is exciting because he defuses the cynicism that results in a divided electorate providing no mandate to its politicians except the sabotage of the opposition's agenda. Obama has the ability to inspire us to relax our partisanship enough to dismantle the Red State/Blue State mentality that has poisoned the American political process.

Mass delusion?????!!! Really? It's come down to this. The media has given one SINGLE man SUCH POWER??? Obama has "hypnotized much of the media and the public with his eloquence and the symbolism of his life story". If this is the case I'm just mad he didn't do it 8 years ago before the idiot we have now became president. Obama '08

If you look at his plans - for Social Security, the AMT, Medicare (for god's sake, don't ignore Medicare.. its a single-payer system going bankrupt in 10 years), ending the war (2009? It would 20 months in a expedited mode just to get all the vehicles out of the country!) - there is nothing there, or what is there is impossible.. I love change.. I don't love naivete, and I don't think even the most rosy of voters should give someone a free pass on the "Ignore the facts, he's for change" mantra.

You got that right miamiman. America needs to wake up. How can the greatest nation on the planet be misled by the minority whose bigotry burns like hell? We need a new leader and neader ship style, and OBama is promising to provide that. We are tired of having nearly-men in the WH who do not understand the dynamics of world politics, people whose decisions are based on the profit projections of oil , defense and construction companies. Enough of this mess. We need new light and the time is NOW>
