You are correct, Sen Clinton IS a known entity, and that is the reason I and many who remember the past cannot vote for her. At least with Obama there is the possibility of real change. We will not get that chance with Clinton or McCain.

I have been following the campaign of the candidates, and I agree with your opinion on Obama. I am from Illinois, and he is a slick candidate, that tells everyone what they want to hear. And while you are listening, you get swept up in it and end up finding out he's no different then the rest. In fact, he's worse.
I haven't gotten swept up by him, but I have seen several people who have. I often wonder other than mainstream media, how do these voters become knowledgeable? The sad truth is, they don't. This doesn't bode well for our country, especially when someone like Obama may be placed in a position based upon passion and not logic. I pray that voters wake up and act before it is too late.
God Bless America!
I am also from Illinois and am greatly disappointed by what Obama has NOT done for me in his role as Senator. I wonder if he can vote "present" in the White House. I am deeply concerned with his past real estate transactions and involvement with corrupt brokers, then a proclamation of innocence. I expect more insight and research from the leader of our country.

I've heard Barack Obama say that he'll work to shift Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy back to the rest of us who need it. That combined with the end of the war in Iraq, as well as the dividends we'll see after we invest in a green energy industry, will help fund a lot of his proposals.
He has said he also wants to invest in building our infrastructure, like roads and bridges, instead of sending all our money overseas, and that will help drive the economy up for the working men and women of this country.
Maybe his proposals aren't that different from other clear-thinking progressives, but he brings with them the power to generate grass-roots appeal and wide-spread support, and judging by his record in the Illinois state senate, he is a genuine uniter, which this country desperately needs in the bully pulpit.
Beware Welfare!

My patience for this kind of journalism is wearing thin. Very, very thin. The whole "rhetoric" verse "reality" debate is weak at best. He delivers speeches based on a core set of beliefs regarding how the world is and how it can be. His beliefs have been consistent and his presentation of reality accurate. You're simplifying the situation and you're smart enough to know it. You're trying to argue that to speak about morality you can never kill a fly. Or an environmentalist can never drive a car. You're presenting a slippery slope of presumptions that does not even attempt to address the complexity of our political and media system.
We finally have the opportunity to elect a decent president and you're trying to crush it because he'll never be decent enough.
As a typical Obama supporter, you prefer hearing his rhetoric to the truth
considering the state of social security, unemployment, foreign trade, ridiculouly high gas prices, taxes on already taxed taxes, a promise of a rebate check which will without a doubt be distributed to the drug dealers and their customers before being distributed to the $50,000 struggling single parent, I would vote for Howdy Doody if he ran on the democratic ticket. Whichever democrat wins the nomination, I will be happy.
I'm so glad that you wrote this article. The idea of Senator Obama becoming the President plain out scares me. While I do laud his eloquent speeches and stirring rhetoric, I hope that other people really read and listen between the lines, because, that what it really is, rhetoric. He has no original idea, he has no plan; he is banking all of this on a wave of popularity but has no substance or experience to back it. The thought of who he might choose to be his cabinet members is terrifying. I think he may be so arrogant and stuck on the whole 'change' thing that he might actually appoint others to his cabinet who also have no experience! Scary!
Obama would LIKELY have some of the SAME cabinet members as President Clinton did...considering that he has MANY of them on his campaign staff. I think Obama has the intelligence and foresight to know that he does NOT in fact know everything, but will in fact select some of the best and most brilliant people to staff the White House and advise him.
Doesn't it bother you that Obama continually grumbles about how bad it was under
Clinton yet has as his advisors those that comprised the Clinton's administration.
Talk about hypocracy----------
So glad someone finally is speaking my thoughts. We need to tell our young generation not to gamble the future in the hands of a rookie...nothing beats experience when the nation and the world is involved.
I think we have gambled already and loss. I mean what's workign now???
Why in the heck do I care about Robert J. Samuelson's opinion!?? I care more about my mailman's or my taxidriver. He is a journalistic hack, whose words are not worth the paper they are printed on. As byrdlegs said below, go to below site and check it out. http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/sarahramey/gGCPbv
Lets put an end to the fear-mongering and class-dividing politics that Bush has brought back these past 7 years, and that McCain is already continuing. As far as longevity and age, I do not vote for a candidate because of that. I vote for the one who I think is going to lead this country in a different direction than where we have been heading. American simply cannot afford 4 more years of failed economic and foreign policies, lies, and distortions. Obama in '08!!
'Lets put an end to the fear-mongering and class-dividing politics'
If we did that, what platform could ANY democrat run on? Edward's two Americas...
You say that "the subtext of Obama's campaign is that his own life narrative???to become the first African American president, a huge milestone in the nation's journey from slavery???can serve as a metaphor for other political stalemates." This is fundamentally wrong. The reason why Obama inspires people is not because of his background or even the history of America from slavery to freedom or from an African American being able to become President. People know that this is not the reason. The reason why Obama inspires is because of his leadership. He knows that social change comes from the bottom, not from the top and he will involve people in the process. . Also you suggest he can talk but not do. Well, he has already DONE a lot of things already- first overcome a well known "Clinton" brand by mobilising masses of people. What President would not envy that? He can bring people together which is what you need in Government. Pleople like Obama. They are tired of having to rely on the media to tell them who to vote for. Obama is the voice of the people, democracy in its pure form, and he will run a Government that removes the special interest and where people will feel they are part of the process. Obama is the Next President, and colour does not matter.
I agree, Geonewsweek! I think Mr. Samuelson is just bashing Obama because he's part of the media that rejoices in the status quo. Never mind that our highways deteriorate, our bridges collapse, and vast areas of our country that once contained industries, now look like bombed our war zones. Let's not bother to try to fix it because Obama doesn't please Mr. Samuelson and others like him.
Why is it that so many folks think they have the right ideas, they know how and what to think, and that everyone else is just plain stupid??? It is truly amazing how many "experts" reside in this country! Politicians are politicians - not miracle workers, not saviors of the world as we would like to see it, not omniscient superbeings who can change in one term what has taken several presidents and many terms to mess up. Any career politician knows what buzzwords to use, what "pie in the sky" speeches to deliver, how to appeal to peoples' emotions (not their reasoning). Get a grip on reality, folks. Research, objectively, the histories and claims of your candidates.
And, BTW, if Obama is elected, he will not be the first black president - he will be the first half black president. Like it or not, everyone, Obama is also half white - just as I am. But, unlike Obama, I am PROUD to claim my biracial heritage.
Wow. I am so glad to hear someone finally mention that he would be a bi-racial president. It is the same with Tiger Woods. The media deny the importance of the mothers of these men. It takes two parents.
FINALLY, a journalist that is willing to address this issue! I like Sen. Obama and see him as a great motivator, but not much else to convince me to vote for him . I want more than a rock star that seems to be gathering momentum based on a popularity contest. The past few weeks have felt like I'm watching "The Candidate". Very scary.
Good post! America needs a leader, not a motivational speaker.

It is about time people in the media started to scrutinize this campaign a little more closely. Treating Obama's candidacy like it is the second coming does no one any good, least of all the electorate.
I agree with you! Americans need to look at the candidate who can do the best job possible and not someone who flatters them with speeches and looks. There is something unreal and unusual happening and people need to open their eyes widely. There is a saying that the devil you know is better that the angel you don't know.
Thanks!
I don't know much about politics, but I am actually getting involved much more than I ever did in my life time. Guys, (zjemi and norpoul) what we do need is a change. A leader who can really occupied himself, first of all, in fixing the major disadvantages the nation have been pushed into. We need a strong, focused, and goal oriented leader that understand the necessities of the american people and its growing immigrant communities. Let us really be sincere here, this current administration I found it to be the worts ever. And the mess is leaving behind is not an easy one to clean up, therefore, we need a leader who can bring up the economy, end war, put his/her nose into the education issues such as violence; yes-health care, but for real not just empty promises, one who can carryout a thorough plan to assist the immigration issues the nation is facing. For example, do you guys think is humane that a whole county in GA do not want to rent apartments to families (it doesn't matter what race they are), and evern more worse, places who do not want to assist a pregnant woman. I CAN DEFINITELY SAY OUTLOUD, "WE NEED A LEADER WITH THE DETERMINATION, COURAGE, AND DRIVE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HAD TO TELL THE TRUTH AND UNVEIL THE EVIL ACTIONS OF A SYSTEM WHO FOSTERS SUCH KIND OF TREATMENT TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING. Not renting an apartment to a foreign family, PLEASE!, what kind of heart is that, a black heart probably. Oh!, I forgot to say, Yes, I am hispanic by the way. So, do I sound biased? yes, I have to-especially if we are the only foreigners who are getting threated worst than animals. The laws that protect animals are considered better than the way some hispanics are treated in some places. Ok now, back to the political issue of who is better than who for presindent. Unfortunally you two have not mentioned any major concerns about the real problems affecting our society (focus please) and then say something that can move these discussion further into real arguments. Thanks!
