This is a poorly written piece on every level and unfortunately displays a lazy form of journalism that tarnishes Newsweek's reputation.

If you're truly interested in knowing what Obama stands for, visit his website at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ and download his proposal papers. They are voluminous and have been posted long before Hillary Clinton posted her information. In fact, she still will not give specifics regarding her Social Security plan. Instead of putting out hard figures like Obama has done, she states that she would defer it to a commission.

As we've seen from the Iraq Study Group, commissions are beauty pageants for the politically weak-minded and weak-willed. They allow you to put the blame elsewhere and move on as if you've actually done something with your time.

Again, go to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ if you're truly interested in educating yourself.

Then, armed with that factual information, you can write a good piece of journalism. If you still find fault, then so be it. But you will not be able to make the impression that Obama is an empty suit.

Yes, I like Obama's rhetoric because I like what he says. I have been waiting for words like his for a long, long time. We are in the primary season. The voters apparently like what he has to say. Both democratic candidates have spelled out what they wish to achieve. There is no question, whoever gets elected president , will come up against reality. Obama has said in his speeches that he is aware of that. However he is more likely to bring people together than his opponent, who seems to evoke a very negative reaction.
I assure you neither I nor other Obama supporters whom I spoke to suffer from delusions. Obama is ttoo smart to be deluded, and so are we.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. Every election season we act like we're surprised that some candidates don't agree with our views on how the country should be run. Americans always act like they want someone who will tell them the truth but they really don't. No one wants to hear that you can't have entitlements, wars and all the governmental services you want without paying taxes. Grow up! All you reporters and commentators ever do is sit on the sidelines and grouse. If you have such innovative ideas, put your name in the ring. In the meantime, we will make the choice with the options we have.

albertgorejr : What we need to BEWARE of, are fear-inducing, hate-mongers like you! Stop and reflect, and try and work out where all of your anger is really coming from. Most people really do want to heal this country and move forward and, this is the 21st century, after all. Or, haven't you heard?

OMG, a member of the press is actually saying something negative about Barrack Hussein Obama?! Be-still my heart! And here I thought that 100% of the press has fallen for that jive-talkin', empty suit's delusions, meaningless words, and empty promises. I guess it's 100% of the press minus one, that has fallen for the hype....

    • Posted By: montacque @ 02/20/2008 2:14:47 PM

Barrack "Hussein" Obama? I guess you'll be supporting McCain. I may not be voting for Clinton, but I know a Clinton supporter would never say something so ignorant.

      • Posted By: ssbn777 @ 02/20/2008 2:42:02 PM

But that's his name! I believe I even spelled it correctly, too. Typical lib attitude -- you hear the truth, and call it "ignorance."

What you hear Republicans saying and what they really want are two very different things. Publicly they say they're hoping for Hillary on the ballot but privately they're dying to face Obama in the fall. That should tell you something. The primary race had to remain civilized but that ends with the nomination. His cocaine usage as well as other things from his past will be fair game and the republicans are as good as it gets. They'll swift boat him in the same fashion they did Kerry in '04!

    • Posted By: CitizenF @ 02/20/2008 2:41:56 PM

So, who doesn't know he used cocaine as a teen? How doesn't know GWB used cocaine as an adult? Who doesn't know Bill Clinton used drugs? This will not be news to anyone, so give it a rest.

That was a very well put together article, but the thing is-WE DON"T CARE!!!. We are in the Obama cult, and we aren't going anywhere! He is not perfect, of course, but he is more honest and forthright than Hilary, and the only thing McCain has going for him is his time as a POW. Yes, that's great and honorable, i'm a soldier as well so i give him props, but that doesnt mean that he should be handed the presidency!!!! Look, we want something new, and it starts with Obama! join the cult Robert lol

It is no secret that Obama's views and proposals are not that different from Clinton's. I am fully aware of that. What attracts me to Obama is, 1) that he has not accepted money from lobbyists and special interests; he will not be beholden to them when he gets into office. 2) His track record illustrates an approach that goes across the aisle in order to get things done. Clinton's views and Obama's views are much the same, but I have greater faith that he will get things done.

Excellent article. It is about time that someone present the facts about the shallow campaign. Now hold on, here I go, I have thought that most journalists were afraid to raise these issues because of race. If Obama would have been white I am sure he would have called on these matters months earlier. A final question - if Clinton were capturing 90% of the white vote woulld ther not be a uproar and questions of race raised, of course. Then why not regarding Obama and the 90% of the black vote?

    HA!
You gave it a goold old college try, but it didn't make the cut.

Hey, Samuelson, want to tell me why Hillary continues to sponsor international companies that take advantage of children in developing nations by cashing in on "aid" sales?

Or perhaps you can explain to everyone how Bill sold LITERS of hiv infected blood to Canada; a move that resulted in HUNDREDS of deaths up here.

You know what? The list goes on and on and on.

Obama have some faults. After all, if he were to come up with abstract new policies NO ONE would buy them. Everyone would write him off. He's trying to influence change through little changes; minor details that have substantial impacts on the lives of American citizens.

Grow up. America needs him and not Hillary.

Samuelson is on the mark as usual. Obama is just an empty suit - its about time somebody said so.

I think we are going to be in a worse situation than the current one. If Obama wins we are in for in for tragic situation. He is inexperienced guy and full of rhetoric. People may be impressed with his speech but giving the high office to someone with no experience or substance is dangerous and we are in for another devastation and shock. Lte us learn this again by my another big mistake. I am hoping that we wake up and try to avoid the disaster by electing the right qualified person as our president. Hope GOD be with us to save our country from this joker.

What is Mr. Samuelson's point other than to bash Obama? Barack has laid out how he plans to pay for the changes he invisions. If we elect a progressive House and Senate, then at least some of the changes will occur.

I watched on MSNBC as Obama madw a speach in Houston Texas where he asked and encouraged voters to vote early ahead of the election day and secondly to also caucus on the election day in order to influence the vote and the amount of delegates. An argument can be made that he is conspiring to have thousands of people commit voter fraud in Texas. Is this an honorable credible candidate?

    • Posted By: number40one @ 02/20/2008 2:39:36 PM

Except that's not voter fraud. You need to research Texas' primary and caucus rules before you start running your mouth.

    • Posted By: cdavis5061 @ 02/20/2008 2:24:56 PM

Why does it have to be fraud? This state is holding a Prim-Caucus on March 4. We don't have a problem with this we are a multitask state. Texas very technical and a sophisticated state, Yes We Can.
