    HA!
You gave it a goold old college try, but it didn't make the cut.

Hey, Samuelson, want to tell me why Hillary continues to sponsor international companies that take advantage of children in developing nations by cashing in on "aid" sales?

Or perhaps you can explain to everyone how Bill sold LITERS of hiv infected blood to Canada; a move that resulted in HUNDREDS of deaths up here.

You know what? The list goes on and on and on.

Obama have some faults. After all, if he were to come up with abstract new policies NO ONE would buy them. Everyone would write him off. He's trying to influence change through little changes; minor details that have substantial impacts on the lives of American citizens.

Grow up. America needs him and not Hillary.

My question to you is what are you going to do to bring about change? You seem to have everything nailed down. What would you do and say to help bring about real change in the country? It's easy to write comments like this and set back and wait for the response. It's hard to believe that other countries want to be like us. We have been under a cloud for so long we can't see the forest for the trees. The Republicans have run this country in the ground for the last 30 years, they have controlled Congress for most of it. Even under Bill Clinton so to ask the American people to just say no to change is crazy. I dare say go to The ILL state Gov website and look up what he has done it's on record or is that to easy to do. Hillary is a good person but she's part of our past along with McCain it's time to look to the future and if this is something you don't want to be a part of then don't let the doorknob hit ya.

Also if they have to make McCains wife look just as old as him to make him more appealing then all hope is lost. She really looks old now.

I'm not clear on why anyone believes that Hillary Clinton is more "experienced" than Obama.

Neither have been Senators for all that long, and in the review of bills, a larger number of Obama's appear to have far more substance.

If Hillary supporters are taking into account Hillary's HUSBANDS "experience" which, let us not forget, encompasses the biggest failure of his first term which was Hillary's own health care fiasco, they are then basing their opinions of Hillary not upon Hillary herself but upon the combined entity that is "Billary".

This in effect is an admission of voting "Billary" in for a third therefore and illegal term.

Exactly correct. Obama and his rhetorical flair has been immune from critical appraisal and evaluation by the pundits and challengers because of the fervor he engenders and the messianic passion he has enjoyed.
It's high time he address issues with clarity and specific strategic plans - who will be his appointees, how will he deal with the contradictions of his stands and why should we assume that he has the qualifications to assume this position?
The satin texture of his rhetoric is, indeed, enticing. But with critical and enlightened appraisal, this fabric may ultimately reveal that the Emperor has no clothes.

Since you say Obama needs to reveal all of these things, what President has done this.
First he has to win the Presidency. Once in office, he will hire the top advisors to assist him.
You think magical Hillary and one foot in the grave MCain, has this information to reveal to you.
You know when the creator presents miracles, unbelievers surely will let them pass them by due to
being a person who habitually sees or anticipates the worst or is disposed to be gloomy.

Perhaps Samuelson should do some research, starting with reading Obama's website where he outlines solutions to many of todays pressing issues.

  • Posted By: proctor410 @ 02/20/2008 2:34:21 PM

Mr. Samuelson, thanks for the fair and impartial article! you are proof there are responsible journalist left in this country... NOT!! Which Clinton lobbyist paid you for this?? come on... tell us!

    • Posted By: whataguy @ 02/20/2008 2:36:09 PM

I agree totally with your response; we need more fair and not bias reporting on all the candidates.

  • Posted By: Hoang @ 02/20/2008 11:57:58 AM

You know, I'm a foreigner and I'm supporting Obama.
In my opinion, you cannot try to find a PERFECT candidate in this campaign. What's great of Obama is that he admits that he's not perfect and is willing to fight for what he believes in. His message is very consistent to all American voters - this is different from other candidates in that others will try to approach different people in different ways, using different tactics...
And moreover, I really agree with his message to unite the American people. If he becomes president of the United States of America, that will be good hope for the world at large. Think about it. PEOPLE ARE YEARNING for Change, not only in the US but all over the world.
    Go Americans! Go Obama!

    • Posted By: albertgorejr @ 02/20/2008 12:02:23 PM

      Foreigners don't count.
      Shut up and go home.

      • Posted By: mhopgood123 @ 02/20/2008 12:14:03 PM

You are a perfect example of what is wqrong with our country. I'd be willing to bet you have never traveled abroad.

        • Posted By: albertgorejr @ 02/20/2008 12:24:40 PM

I've been to Colombia, Mexico, Bahamas, & Barbados. Now you can shut up too.

          • Posted By: MsCookie57 @ 02/20/2008 1:27:07 PM

albertgorejr, you've been nowhere. Besides Columbia, you???ve only been on a few weekend Celebrity Cruises, and the drug capitol of the world. (hmmm) Your comment about foreigners is ignorant. The only non-foreigners in this country are Mexicans and Native Americans. So ultimately you don't count either. As far as this article from Samuelson is concerned, anyone who still wears glasses that large from the 70's let's me know they aren't ready for change and wouldn't know it if it bit them in the face. McCain wants to fight the good fight and be the American bully. Keep our troops in Iran and possibly Iraq for ???GENERATIONS???. That???s what he said. Retirement age is what it is for a reason; you do ultimately grow old and feeble. The stress of the presidency ages a person. Look at the before and after pictures of our presidents. (Except for GW Bush, he still looks like a lost lamb) McCain has no where to go!!!

Finally anyone who says Obama doesn't have a plan just doesn???t want to find out what his plans are; they are all over the internet. I was skeptical for a while because I didn't think "white" people would vote for him, but their willingness to put the race issue aside is encouraging sends a message about our country, we can unite within. We are left with a big mess from the Bush's to the Clinton's. God himself would have to work overtime to straighten out this mess; Obama can only begin the vision of up righting the wrongs that are going on now. At least he's a start. The other candidates are business as usual, and we are slipping down a steep slope as a nation.

As far as his policy on Gay Marriage, I don???t believe in it, but I do believe that those who chose to share their lives together should have the same rights as the conventional couple. I can???t push my religious beliefs on anyone else. I am a full fledged Christian but it killed me to see these Evangelicals vote in Bush because he had the most ???Biblical Principals??? as any of the candidates. Bush has been a surface Christian all his life, and his actions in the white house have been less than Christ-like. So all you Evangelicals, don???t you be fooled by rhetoric and vote another war monger into the White House.

            GO OBAMA!

That's the way I see him, too. His reliance on political cliches and personal attacks contradicts his message of hope and change. Given that all he has is message--no experience, no achievements--his lack of originality is not promising. He doesn't have the experience, and he doesn't have anything to substitute for it except the rhetoric and ideas of others. Bush has left us in dire straits, and it will take more than a new face and smart mind to fix things. It will take experience and ability and new ideas. Obama seems to have none of those, and he is increasingly full of a hubris that may make an Obama presidency resemble a Greek drama. I like the man a lot, but he is not ready to be president, and this nation is not in a position after the last eight years to to take the chance.

  • Posted By: socmajor @ 02/20/2008 2:35:59 PM

I think this article raises valid points but fails to address the root of Obama's campaign. What if people are simply moved by his inspirational appeal? What if people want change, in a broad general resonating kind of way? Maybe he doesn't have all the detailed answers and plans and policies already formed. That doesn't matter to me. And, as a 27 year old who graduated from college 9 months after September 11th, I think most of my generation wants to be inspired. In fact, that may be all we want. We want a reason to be proud in our country. I watch footage of Bush on TV and wonder how he was qualified for the position. Sometimes it looks like someone just coached him on how to walk, much less talk. I'm a positive person so won't claim to be hopeless but all I really care about right now is having a leader. This is not a monarchy. I want a president who is collaborative and inspiring and hits that intangible button that gets people ready to take part in the process and question what's going on. For me and most of my friends, that's all we need. And I don't think that's a dangerous stance to take. I think Barack is really smart, and really eloquent and will listen and collaborate with advisors and with other countries, to make really intelligent decisions. His judgement will be sound and his plans truly will be in our best interest. I'm not yearning for a website that explains all of his plans. I'm yearning for the desire to want to watch a State of the Union address. I want to think our president is well-respected. I want a president that represents our mosaic nation. I don't want a white middle aged man to lead our country for a long time. It's just not who we are anymore. Obviously that demographic can provide sound leadership but we need to hold ourself to the standard of really representing who we are as a nation. Bush doesn't do that. He represents a country club. He represents a fraternity. What can he know about certain personal challenges that people in the US are facing? I'm fine with rhetoric. It's the right rhetoric right now.

    You are so right.

I too am worried about that. And, I am still hoping for the sensable people in the America to prevail.

gross misleading interpretation of obama's plans, intent to hurt obama campaign. example: obama doesn't have to shift tax burden to younger generation in order to give tax break to the lower income class. but this so-called journalist pretends that is the only way to give a break to the poor. what a pig.

    • Posted By: whataguy @ 02/20/2008 2:35:14 PM

It appears that you have to inflict words like "what a pig" to make your point. Keep your focus and state your thoughts, not invective verbs of hate.

Just a few of the intelligent reasons to choose Obama are listed below.

    1. He's open to new ideas and partnerships,no matter where they come as long as they come with Beneficial Humanistic values and additionally open to communicating with other world leaders in that same vein, which is the only way to solve problems in the long term.

    2. He's not been tainted and molded by an old failed government system, therefore his freshness is an asset as his goals are aimed to benefit all, not just a few.

    3. He understands that any long standing and supportive structure must be built from the base up.
    Not from the top down.

    And Last but Not Least...

    4. He's blessed with a rare gift to bring people together from all parties and sides to reach that 61% approval level that is required to turn new ideas into law.

Without this gift, nothing is possible.

Let's see, such 'action' got us two World Trade Center attacks, attacks on the USS Cole and several US Embassies, genocide in Iraq, the oil for food sham, the genocide in the Sudan, Samolia, etc.

      2. He's not been tainted and molded by an old failed government system, therefore his freshness is an asset as his goals are aimed to benefit all, not just a few.

And yet, everyone wants to bring out his legislative history. Though pushing for 2000 bills and only getting 3 passed is far from being an uniter.

      3. He understands that any long standing and supportive structure must be built from the base up.
      Not from the top down.

We all ready have a government that is too big with too much control. No matter where you start, making it even bigger is a really BAD idea.

      And Last but Not Least...

      4. He's blessed with a rare gift to bring people together from all parties and sides to reach that 61% approval level that is required to turn new ideas into law.

So you are saying he will be ruled by the polls (controlled questions and respondents) and not the 300 million US citizens?

  • Posted By: stacyshaw @ 02/20/2008 2:34:17 PM

So Obama is criticized for not providing details of his plans, then when he does he is criticized for those details. The point of Obama's campaign is not just his candidacy and election; it's about a national movement. Within that movement is the political power and political will to tackle these problems. No longer will we have just a wish-list of things we want to change. Instead, we will have in place all of the people and the political will to make those changes.

To suggest that Obama cannot deliver on his promises is to miss the point of his campaign. He is winning by huge margins. It is not just a campaign; it's a movement. It is that movement that will bring the campaign promises into reality. As Obama often says, good intentions are not enough to bring change. They need to be fortified with political power and political will. The movement that is behind Obama is that power and is that will.

I believe that Obama could herald a new vision for the United States. I agree that we need to remove the same old tired people from government. The problem with this great country of ours is that we have become a service nation. Do you want us to be strong? Do you want the economy to bustle? Do you want to put people back to work? Reindustrialize this great nation. Let us be a nation of creative thinkers. Creative industries, not just a service nation. My only issue, and one that is back by others, is his support for abortion. We need a new vision in the White House. Mr Obama is the new vision. Mr. Obama is a real deal

This is a poorly written piece on every level and unfortunately displays a lazy form of journalism that tarnishes Newsweek's reputation.

If you're truly interested in knowing what Obama stands for, visit his website at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ and download his proposal papers. They are voluminous and have been posted long before Hillary Clinton posted her information. In fact, she still will not give specifics regarding her Social Security plan. Instead of putting out hard figures like Obama has done, she states that she would defer it to a commission.

As we've seen from the Iraq Study Group, commissions are beauty pageants for the politically weak-minded and weak-willed. They allow you to put the blame elsewhere and move on as if you've actually done something with your time.

Again, go to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ if you're truly interested in educating yourself.

Then, armed with that factual information, you can write a good piece of journalism. If you still find fault, then so be it. But you will not be able to make the impression that Obama is an empty suit.
