Mr. Samuelson would have been better advised to tell us his choice and what makes them deserving, instead of engaging in cheap character assasination. As has been demonstrated repeatedly elsewhere here, many of Samuelson's arguments are illogical and even nonsensical.

For those who with the stated erroneous belief that Republicans are giving us Barack, wouldn't that be a counter-productive strategy, since all indications are that McCain would fare better against Clinton than Obama?

Mr. Samuelson, why no mention of Hillary's non-vote on telecom immunity in the wiretapping bill, and Obama's vote for the amendment against immunity? Isn't the facts that our fundamental rights are being trampled and Hillary (once again) showing she lacks the courage of her convictions important and relevant to the discussion? No mention here either of Obama's transparency regarding finaces, while Hillary refuses to release hers. Again, not important to you? Evidently, Mr. Samuelson is satisfied enough with the past four presidential terms and "politics as usual", but it is a relief to suspect his view will form the minority this time around.

Just curious, but I have to wonder what Mr. Samuelson had to say, if anything, about the current tenant's qualifications, or lack thereof, in 2000 and 2004....

The myth that Obama is more of a threat to McCain that Hillary is the Republican dream.
In the general campaign, the Republicans haven't any unused dirt to throw at Hillary,
but they've got fresh meat in Obama. Even the media, McCain friendly, will stop giving
Obama a free pass and will really get down to questioning the issues (and promulgating
the Republican charges like the Swiftboaters in 2004.) While this should have been an
easy race for the Democrats, as they usually do, are throwing it away on a far left candidate,
even one without proven credentials. As an Independent, I'm going with McCain. It might
also surprise people that a lot of the Independent votes that Obama is getting in the primaries
will not be there in the general. For the most part, we Independents are middle-of-the-roaders and
McCain is far closer than the ultra-liberal Obama (#1 liberal in the Senate.)

Shave your mustache, it is just more of the same "journalist" look. It lacks rhetoric and meaning.... Obama 2008!

  • Posted By: shielse @ 02/20/2008 2:25:31 PM

This article wrongly suggests that Obama should be penalized for his rhetorical skill. The article seems to argue that Obama's policy proposals are just as ordinary as those of the other candidates, but that we should hold Obama to a higher standard than the other candidates because of his effectiveness as an orator. That makes no sense. If the policies of the candidates are all fairly mainstream, but Obama distinguishes himself by having the ability to inspire people, that should count in his favor -- the way I see it -- because that ability is critical to leadership and suggests that Obama may be able to get more of his agenda enacted than the other candidates, thereby actually bringing about greater change.

I have been a newcomer to the american elections ,being from the world largest democracy, India. I have been through several elections in my country promising miracles and change, only to find later that they never materailised. Along wth good judgement, honesty one needs experience to have the promised changes materialised .It is not unjust to dream big but it is certainly unfair to have people swayed by words of hope and change which do not transform into reality.Of course, you do not get operated by a surgeon who promises miracles which can not be achieved in reality , though people initially may get lured into the trap. Hope we realise the reality before it is too late.

    Mr. Samuelson,

This "article" is pure fluff. You have said nothing new, and you haven't backed up what little you did say with anything more than your own cynicism. Senator Obama is proposing the RADICAL IDEA that those who work for the federal governement cut all the ideological bullcrap and actually work together to do the jobs that they are being PAID TO DO. It is this simple idea that has created a groundswell of support.

No amount of skeptical, self serving commentaries from you is gonna change the fact that the American people have spoken. We are tired of the status quo and the parasitic media that feeds off government disfunction and backbiting. While you are trying to figure out what is going on, change has already passed you by. See you at the Inauguration.

This is the first balanced, somewhat critical analysis of the Obama Campaign that I have seen. How is it that the media is so unwilling to question Obama about any specifics? Certainly, we deserve a change to current policies but Obama falls way short of providing us with his vision of change. What does he stand for? What will he do to insure a successful implementation of his undefined vision of change?

I hope the Hillary camp reads this. If she took this argument, forcefully, to a televised debate, she could mop the stage with that skinny kid.

This is a poorly written piece on every level and unfortunately displays a lazy form of journalism that tarnishes Newsweek's reputation.

If you're truly interested in knowing what Obama stands for, visit his website at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ and download his proposal papers. They are voluminous and have been posted long before Hillary Clinton posted her information. In fact, she still will not give specifics regarding her Social Security plan. Instead of putting out hard figures like Obama has done, she states that she would defer it to a commission.

As we've seen from the Iraq Study Group, commissions are beauty pageants for the politically weak-minded and weak-willed. They allow you to put the blame elsewhere and move on as if you've actually done something with your time.

Again, go to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ if you're truly interested in educating yourself.

Then, armed with that factual information, you can write a good piece of journalism. If you still find fault, then so be it. But you will not be able to make the impression that Obama is an empty suit.

It seems as if Mr. Samuelson like Obama when he was just an impressive keynote speaker but now that he is within a whisper of the white house he no longer likes him. Obama does stand for something; in fact he stands for a lot of things.

    1. Obama is finally representing the voice of the people who have been frustrated for so long with Washington???s partisanship and gridlock politics while the nations needs go unheeded. This is how the roman senate started to crumble, when the senators got too full of themselves and forgot about the people. Many established Washington politicians are amazed at how Obama is drawing people from all walks of life what they have failed to realize all these years is that the nation is fed up with the decadent politics of the past two decades.
    2. The nation has been weary of the power of the lobbyists in Washington, the marginalization of the people???s voices just like the French people where just before the French revolution. The masses were struggling to make ends meet while the elite were living lavishly and the politicians were ignoring the wishes of the people. What Obama is doing is leading a revolution of the people who want a change in the way business is done in Washington.
    3. It???s obvious that the entrenched in Washington still don???t get it; McCain is using the same experience versus novice lines that has failed Hillary. What the republicans and democrat veterans don???t understand is that the experience they laud is the very experience the people have come to detest, what they think is there strong suit is really there weakness, the people want change from the dour business as usual Washington politics, the Clinton???s did not believe that certain demographics would not rally behind Obama and the republicans are assuming the same, what they don???t realize is that the whole nation across all demographics is sick of what Washington politics has denigrated into.

This is a movement of the people by the people and for the people that is been led by Obama, perhaps the most unlikely choice of the people but the one who recognized the frustration the people have endured all these years.

Mr. Samuelson is the one who is deluded as he does not realize or grasps the magnitude of the movement that is going on. A revolution is underway and he is telling us to "eat cake"

get a life. you people think longevity in washington is a qualification for Presidency

To the arthur of this article; you are quick to conclude that Mr. Obama is not white house material based on lack of experience, and you are quick to point out Clinton and McCain's experience, but I beg your pardon on Hillary, according to HER personal biography she was a lawyer before becoming the first lady of Arkansas and before Bill was voted into the white house, so she 's been in the senate since 2004 and that makes her experienced. Who are you trying to blow smoke at and are you on the Clinton's payroll for campaigning, If you are don't hide it just admit she needs help and here comes this aritcle to give her just that. She ran for the senate just to get to run for president because bill couldn't get a vote as president of a crack house! She has had an "I smell boo boo" look on her face ever since she was booted from the white house. She screwed up our health care when her hubby was in office. I know this because I've been in the medical field 20 years. I would just like to know what your agenda is by this article and if these are indeed your thoughts why have you waited until he was whipping her butt in the polls to publish it.

    A smart article delusion.

  • Posted By: courage1993 @ 02/20/2008 2:23:35 PM

Everyone is talking about how little experience Obama has. I believe he is intelligent enough to surround himself with a top notch cabinet. Finally a candidate that I can identify with. Go Obama!

  • Posted By: Concerned Citizen in AL @ 02/20/2008 2:04:03 PM

Mr. Samuelson - You have beautifully articulated my problem with Senator Obama. If he gets the Democratic nomination, I'm going to be very worried that, in fact, nothing is going to change. Hillary Clinton is a known commodity and I know she speaks for me on almost all issues I care deeply about. I'm hoping the Obama delirium subsides soon.

I am looking forward to the upcoming debate. I feel like Clinton will win unanimously.

  • Posted By: terrleah @ 02/20/2008 2:22:58 PM

I truly believe that Democrats have an enviable choice in the fact that they have two candidates -- very different -- that each would be a far superior President to anything the Republicans have to offer. However, I appreciate this article because it is what I have thought for quite some time -- that Barack Obama, while inspiring and compelling, doesn't speak about many concrete ideas and plans and when he does, he is repeating something that another candidate already has proposed. Maybe because I am a hard-work, realistic, pragmatic person, I find more interest in a candidate such as Hillary Clinton that has concrete ideas -- not ALL good, but more real and solid than nice speeches. That doesn't mean that Clinton is perfect -- and if anyone wants a perfect person, none of the remaining candidates is it!! But at the end of the day I don't want a President to make nice speeches -- I want a President to roll up his or her sleeves and go to work, Day One!!

  • Posted By: pbencosme @ 02/20/2008 2:22:27 PM

Another Democrat that is not brainwashed by all the empty speeches made by Obama, and i will be happy to vote Republican comes November if he wins.

  • Posted By: lasersolo @ 02/20/2008 2:22:27 PM

I think we forget that you have to BECOME your party???s nominee for President before you can actually be President. Maybe we don't like the system as it is, but you have to work within the system to get the top job to make any type of change. Obama may have boilerplate positions, but I think this country needs more than good policy (although we definitely need that right now)... this country also needs passion from our leaders. We need the dazzle that comes from a President that can complete a sentence without stuttering - let me rephrase that - we need a President that can complete a sentence. Change is not just about policy. Change is also about attitude, commitment and even inspiration! I want that kind of change. McCain and Hillary can do the job. Obama will inspire me as he does the job.

This, at best, is a deceptive article. There is a pervasive emptiness about it. I wouldn't be surprised if he had been given bribe money to write it.
