You are soooo right but how does this message get out to those that are so starry eyed over him. Obamican - WHAT THE HE!! ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? Who cares about HRC's taxes? You're crazy about a campaign finance mess on her part - they've all had problems with contributors and what are you talking about "no representation". Anyone with as much rage as you have really ought to take a deep breath and look at what's going to be best for the country. As Mr. Samuelson says, at least with Hillary, we know what we're getting and there are plenty in the world of politics that would think twice before tring to pull something over on her.

I would not presume to give an opinion on what qualifications it takes to be President but I can't help thinking that this article lacks any persuasive basis in fact. Based upon the information provided by the media todate, I fail to see what experience Hillary Clinton has over and above Barack Obama that so clearly qualifies her as President. What qualified George W. Bush or Bill Clinton to be President? It seems to me that at least Obama comes in with the ambitions of hope and change for the better. The article suggests that these ambitions are based on a lack of experience and that experience extiguishes hope. I'll take the chance on inexperience and the promise of hope over experience and the commitment to bsuiness as usual all day and every day.

I'd like to question how many original ideas you yourself have had that have not been thought of by others. It is easy to postulate when you have access to a channel read by millions. If Hillary had original ideas why were they not implemented during Bill's termS (uppercase intended) in office. She could have influenced to push some through if she had the conviction to - oh I forget there was the healthcare fiasco, oh, and there was NAFTA which she supported then (when she was closest to the pinnacle of power in the country) but now criticizes. If this by your terms is experience, then I know not what it is. Experience comes from doing not necessarily observing. The last I heard about her senate activities was a request for funding for some idea that was ridiculed by her colleagues. This is the experience you seek?

I like JM but have reservations about the ideas he postulates. His sanity was questioned by the very party he professes to represent but a few years ago when he ran against George Bush possibly because of his temper or other reasons. Now he is the darling of the media. We have forgotten allegations of a savings and loans fiasco among others.

You say Obama has no experience. He spoke against the war many years ago. Now the people by the ballots indicate that though we are engaged, many people do not think it was justly embarked upon. He spoke about bombing Pakistan months ago - now it turns out we have indeed bombed Pakistan, a la leaked drone adventure.

We want change and are ready to work for it. Reagan made mistakes - threatening "jokingly" that the bombing of Russia would start in 3 seconds - chalk that to experience. Was it not during JFK's term that we had the Bay of Pigs fiasco - chalk it up to experience. Was it not during Bubba's term that we had the Somalia killing of US troops - chalk it up to experience. Was it not George Bush Jr that in his first State of the Union address spoke of the "Axis of Evil," (a diplomatic no-no) onIy to find himself months later talking about bilateral and multilateral talks with N. Korea, or who along with Cheney led us into this war, tarnishing reputations such as Powell's along the way? I guess experience led Nixon to watergate. One could go on and on.

Is it too much to seek a new direction? You write as though Obama will be unilaterally making decisions and will be without checks and balances - advisers, congress, etc. He has ideas and is putting them forward. They may be populist but the fact that people are responding to them is indicative that he is touching on things that people seek. We know and understand that they may not all be fulfilled but the fact that he will work to fulfill them and can inspire people to work along with him is worth giving it a shot. Of all the potential candidates, he is the least removed from the ordinary woman or man on the street and as become evident to all, is very capable of articulating OUR thoughts.

Please; verify your facts Somalia was under CLINTONS watch. just goes to show how anxious people are to blame Bush for everything even things that did not occur under his watch....talk about DUH

I'll concede your point that Obama's campaign thus far has been rather thin on details with regard to how we actually go about solving the current avalanche of problems facing our country, but that's not what he promised. What he promised was that he would bring together the people with the knowledge and commitment to solve it all and to get them to cooperate in a non-partisan manner. That alone wins MY vote.

If your article started differently, it would have been plausible. If you said, "True, we knew Bush, we knew his father, the people voted for him dispite his obvious lack of knowledge but based on some "moral" issue and he ran our surplus into the ground, ran our global reputation into the ground, ran our jobs out of the country and gave all of the money to his few friends and left us holding this horrific mess..." THEN STARTED YOUR RANT ON OBAMA, I would have read it differently. You didn't. How dare you question his spending without acknowledging the ABYSS of a war that costs millions of dollars a day! Over 25 Nobel Prize Winners have endorsed his candidacy.

This man has run circles around his opponents tapping into an American audience that you white men of priviledge had written off. You can't peddle the fear anymore, we have access to data. I encourage you to meet some more people outside of that narrow circle you come from. This is a NEW DAY. I'll be looking for new reporters at your magazine.

Both Clinton and Macain, are proven and tested. Their characters were, and are being judge according to what they already offered and done to this country. Obama, on the other hand, is yet to be judged, yet to be tested, and his experiences are yet, beyond to be proven..Words are very powerful, but if it is not uniquely came from the inner soul of your own, it wouldn't be as powerful as it should be when put into action. America is better represented by an experienced leader rather than an innexperienced trying hard immitator!

I am so glad I read your article. I agree with your 100%. It bewilders me that everyone doesn't see what is going on. You can tell that he relishes being in the limelight. More like an entertainer than someone who truly cares about the shape our country is in. I give him credit, he is a motivational speaker, but with no substance.

This is the first honest critique of the cult-like atmosphere surrounding Obama. Media hype--particularly among many of the T.V. networks, young adults who are annointing Obama as a John F. Kennedy redux, and a large segment of the public that wants to demonstrate political correctness and openness of thought by embracing the underdog, have joined in a perfect storm that threatens to put in the White House a person who will need training wheels for his first two to three years and who lacks even a modicum of demonstrated understanding of how to work within the dog eat dog Washington scene, not to mention the world stage. It is a frightening proposition.

I'm so sick and tired of hearing the racist, incensitive, unnecessary comments from republicans and democratic voters insult, belittle and degrade Barack Obama for first bieng a man and standing up for what's right thinking about every citizen in the U.S and surrounding states and countries. He's about bringing the troops home where they belong, affordable healthcare for everyone because we need it,. Just because he hasn't been in his senate seat long than the other candidates doesn't mean he's not fit to lead our counrty. It's not about me and sure is not about you it's about us as a united country standing together for what's right and that's what he's about. If you don't have anything good to say shut your lint licker .

All one has to do is have an ounce of intuition on mannerisms, body language, and overall judge of character to realize that Barack Obama is the best candidate to run for presidency in a long time. He carries himself in a respectful, calm, strong way that people are drawn to. The only thing that was right about your article is the fact that Barack Obama is very intelligent. Has anyone seen him mudslinging and grasping at straws to bring anyone else down? Hillary Clinton wants this so badly, she is willing to make a complete fool out herself to try and obtain it. Her advertisements that are geared mainly towards mudslinging at Obama with ridiculous accusations of things that people mostly just laugh and shake their heads at only proves that she is not capable of maintaining the kind of character this country needs. Barack is a clear leader just in the way he holds himself in conversation and integrity. We don't want the same politics anymore. Nobody wants to be led by someone that screws up their facial expressions whenever they are thrown off by a question or issue. We have had enough of Bush's facial expressions. Clinton does the same thing and she has Chelsea and Bill run around and mudsling for her too. Our country wants intelligence and someone like Barack Obama that rises above all of the phony politics that waste everyone's time and money.

Finally someone in the media finds the courage to go against the tide and point to the truth about Obama. Wake up and smell the coffee, people, before it is too late. Obama's rhetoric about CHANGE is just that, as evident by the fact that he is backed by deeply entrenched, establishment Democrats like Ted Kennedy and Tom Daschle, who are the total opposite of change.

Thanks Mr. Samuelson, for being the boy who pointed out that the Emperor has no clothes on. Contrary to popular belief, the more people know about Obama, the more deluded they will be. As a Democrat leaning independent, I'd vote for McCain over Obama any day.

  • Posted By: Smitdi @ 02/20/2008 2:09:59 PM

The primary reason Barack Obama is doing so well is that he reminds us of what we want to be, and after Bush Jr, what we so desperately need to be as a nation. You may think he'll get no where if elected, and maybe he won't, but I'd like to see him try. I like imagining how the world will embrace him, since most leaders of the world are non-white, like him. I like imagining that black & brown Americans will stop being looked at as 2nd class citizens by white Americans. I like imagining that we as a nation will be inspired to be better to one another, do more for one another, and stand as a united front against any who want to harm us.

I am not against Hilary, I just don't feel like going through the republican Clinton-hate machine again. I am not against McCain, I just liked who he was & his positions a lot more when he was running against Bush Jr. - he was original & knew bullsh_t when he saw it. Now he's just a clone.

I think it's a shame we require people to be in politics forever (for experience?), then get angry with them because they're politicians. While Robert Samuelson claims to want the "straight skinny," he's probably like all the rest who would punish the messenger - remember Jimmy Carter? When we grow up & stop wanting to hear only good news, maybe our politicians will start laying out the facts of life. Until then, shut-up.

Mr. Samuelson, people are coming out in droves to vote for the Democratic candidate of their choice - triple the number coming out to choose a Republican. Can you see the landslide coming? Why is Obama's "change" theme so successful? Because the Republicans have squandered our treasure, weakened morale in every government agency, and grown the gap between the top 1% in income and the rest of us. If anyone needs to do some explaining its you, Mr. Samuelson, for your support of the Republican policies that have driven us to the point, where all we have is hope.

It's interesting how Samuelson picks and chooses his comments. He doesn't talk about ANY of Obama's true change issues. He only brings up the ones where he agrees with Hillary -- not mentioning that Hillary has had those views for decades and hasn't had the political will or capacity to do anything about them. I'm tired of hearing about universal health care from her. Time for her to, um, actually do something. It shouldn't be this blatantly obvious who you donate money to, Mr. Samuelson, when you're supposed to be a columnist. Maybe you should take your partisan blind-eye comments to the blog space on Hillary's campaign Web site.

    Dear Mr. Samuelson,

Your arrogance and cynacism are breathtaking. This is the paradigm with your generation--the lot of you, Bush, Clintons, all of many of your fellow journalists are so impressed with yourselves that none of you can see a world beyond your own "wisdom." Only the Baby-Boomers really have the experience and sage perspective to solve the world and nations problems. Wake up, you've been at the same job sinc 1984, that is such a different reality than my generation.

You live in world where you still think and deeply desire the influnce your generation has had over the past 16 years. You, like so many of your ilk are yesterday, Mr. Samuelson are yesterday. Perhaps, it's time to let younger voices who are actually in their prime write weekly columns and offer their wisdom.

    • Posted By: ltcarpio @ 02/20/2008 2:08:45 PM

BTW - Obama is a baby boomer. Just thought you'd like to know that. That generation spans the years 1946-1964. Obama was born in 1961.

Amen!! I see Obama as all hat and no cattle. Simply amazed at how the media i.e. Morning Joe, etc. are so mesmerized by this guy! He makes "slick Willie" lokk like an amateur! And I'm a Democrat but a Clinton supporter. The Republicans will chew him up and he'll play the "race card" as a defense! To hear his supporters proclaim you better elect him or...........we'll riot says alot about what his candidacy is all about!
