Obama is a charismatic, intelligent man who is totally unproven in this arena. In four or eight years from now he may be the man I want to vote for. Right now, I think the only clear answer is Clinton. McCain will only bring us the same of what we have and we need a change. I am glad to have read this and can only hope this particular line of thought will spread.

That is a horrible editorial and why are you putting

That was a terrible editorial and why is it placed like it is top news? Now I have to wonder about your integrity. If you don't give Obama a chance to answer that nasty mess you have lost me as a reader and viewer of your news.

Obama dilusion? How about the dilusion that has been created by the good 'ol boys that represent this country that America is on the up and up. The past eight years we have managed to wage a war on false pretenses, angered much of the world, created a unsurmountable debt that clearly says "do as I say not as I do", created foreign policies that if imposed on us we would be as irate as those that we have affected, put the economy in the cellar (but we will get that great big tax cut- whoopee, been left in the dark ages by other industrialized countries when it comes to health care, continued to depend on big oil while they earn record profits all the while ignored sound, smart technology, conitnue to let Drug companies rip us off, and ignored our constitutiojnal rights, all the while telling me that I'm safe and protected when kids are bringing guns to my childrens school. Obama is anything but dilusional and Bush proved one thing - if he can run this country with sayings like " we'll smoke 'em out of their caves" than Obama has a afairly easy road to follow. He may inherit a mess but its not like our now president will go down as one of the great ones. We need a breath of fresh air and a completely new direction. We need someone who will accept criticism from their peers and not "stay the course." We need bi-partisanship, realistic goals, jobs kept here in the U.S. and more exporting than importing. We need CEOs that don't get hundreds of million dollars for ruining a company. We need to take back this country from the big businesses, from the good 'ol boys and invest it in our backyards. I could care less if Obama was a republican or a democrat, a liberal or a conservative. He is by far the best shot we have at prosperity, integrity and hope this country needs and once had. He is by far the person who can help this country lead this world by allowing actions to speak louder than words.

I went to the Obama rally in Houston yesterday. Yes, he is good at "mass delusion." However, he is the only hope we have for any significant changes. He might not be able to deliver his promises, but he has the best chance - by his conviction and skill. Neither Clinton nor McCain can change anything in Washington - We all know that as a fact. Therefore, you and I should be willing to take a risk on Obama. He will definitely be intelligent enough to be a decent president. We have nothing to lose in betting Obama.

I can't believe this guy is actually going to make to the White House. It's going to be another long 4 years. Sorry Hillary, at least we know there are a lot of stupid people in this country that will support anyone who blows smoke up there ass. The Media has done nothing but put OBAMA on a pedestal and that is the reason he is getting momentum. If he says anything negative it's never discussed, if you say anything remotely in a negative manner its plastered everywhere for days.. Not a fair shake in my opinion.

well lets put macain/ the senior citizen in the white house and hope that he dont get alzheimers. or Hillary, and hope that when a big decision has to be made on a threat or national security, she does not start crying. wouldnt that be a mess. could you imagine at a time of national security and the well being of our great country , THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA #1, we could end up with a senior citizen or a crying president to make the right decisions. Thats scary! many years of service from both Sen. Clinton and Sen. macain and yet nothing has been done. just talk. it is time for a change, a new face. someone that will bring HOPE to the people of this great nation. WE AMERICANS are tired of the same things over and over again with nothing getting done. GIVE OBAMA A CHANCE! This could be a good thing for all of us. BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW! NOT IN A HUNDRED YEARS OF WAR. Oh yea I almost forgot, I got a pocket full of euros. how did that happen? BUSH/WAR????

Maybe as a journalist you need to attend some of the Obama's rallies. Why do you people think you have to be in Washington DC to be able to say you accomplished something. We all know in the past 8 years, they have done nothing besides disagreeing on everything. The man has been in the IL legislator for years, he has been in the senate for 3 years. He wa a community organiser right after law school Why do you people need and want a president who is out of touch with the public. Thank you for your article but I think you need a reality check. I wonder how you get a job at newsweek with such an empty article. You lack substances.
Good Luck but ther American people know what is best for them.

I understand what you are saying Mr. Samuelson and it makes a great deal of sense. Many people have formed their opinions based upon short political quotes or messages. Everyone is asking ???what are these candidates going to do for me???? It???s time to see the big picture and ask ???What are these candidates going to do for our nation???? Will they rob the middle class and redistribute it in the name of socialism? Will they strip the retired of benefits earned from years of hard work. Will they show favoritism toward a race or gender? Will they hold the religious and moral high ground our forefathers instilled in this nation? Will they bring back manufacturing jobs? Will they create a job environment that will employ high paying engineering jobs? Or do they say one thing and have a secret agenda that hasn???t been revealed to us, yet? Obama has already stated that he would like to be the first black President. This shows that he has already made a racial choice. Hillary, well, she is power hungry beyond comprehension. Why else would she remain married to a womanizer? I can not trust either of the two Democratic candidates. If either of them is elected I fear for the lives of our children. I also do not trust McCain with making solid decisions, but what choice do I have.

Here we go again, more excuses for Hilary playing the same political games and its obvious this article takes that stand as well.. Take the losses with some class. Whenever she loses hilary and her Obama delusion supporter is always trying to come up with some political comeback. Wake up, America wants someone who Doesn't stand for typical politics. We want change.

It's funny how we criticize someone for trying, where we know what we will get with Hillary and McCain. The reason why you are seeing people move towards Obama is not, because he is going to some out get rid of the ills of the US, but because he is something different. Like it or not people have the right to "hope" for a better future and vote for a better future. I don't know what kind of president he will make if he wins and I really don't kow what kind of presidents the other two candidates will make either. I say give him a chance...hell give anyone a chance, but know that things will never be the same after the Bush administration. We have strained our economy and our relationships with our allies around the world. Maybe, we need Obama or something different to get back to center and them retool to move on for a better America.

Bravo. Aside from Chris Matthew's body-slam of Kirk Watson last night on Fox, this is hopefully the beginning of a never-ending barrage of reality checks tossed at Obama which will lead to his downfall. Thanks Mr. Samuelson for the first of many-to-come outs to be levied on Obama.

By the way, to fa4hire44, yes you all (Obamaphiles, Obamanists, Obama-mamas, etc.) are idiots for elevating Obama to the spot he is in and potentially putting our country in the hands of a vacuous demagogue.

He plagiarized this; she borrowed that... Oh please! I can't think of any politician, at any time, that hasn't done these things to some degree or another. Every last one of them has gone into this game with hopes and ideas - and not necessarily their own - and anyone who thinks otherwise is themselves delusional.

What I am looking for in a presidential candidate are all of the things Obama has already displayed: intelligence, a willingness to work hard and little (if any) baggage from having to deal with the Washington machine. In other words, he represents a refreshing and much needed change from the status quo. Besides: I don???t believe all of those experienced politicians would just throw away an endorsement on someone who isn???t capable of solving problems and making real changes for the benefit of everyone.

If we follow what this article proposes, to shunn the call of change, Christopher Columbus would still be in Europe and America, this great nation, would still be undiscovered. If we do not try just like a child would stumble, stagger, fall and then ultimately walk, we would all have been crawling on our chests like reptiles.

There is nothing wrong trying. If we made 8 years of George Bush, I am sure we'll survive 4 years of Obama.

  • Posted By: pellum123 @ 02/20/2008 1:46:08 PM

Finally, a story that makes sense. I can see Obamas rhetoric from a mile away. He runs on the premise of change yet he has no real solutions for change. What are we thinking as a country? Why would we put someone into office that has very little experience as a statesmen or as a leader. He is not seasoned and he is not ready for the presidency. I said the same thing about President Bush; not qulaified, not ready. Why are we thinking about doing this again. When Obama speaks, really try to listen to his mesage...there is nothing there, not change, not experience, not wisdom, and certainly not the qualities we should be looking for in a President. Think of it this way; if you were interviewing someone for the Presidency what questions would you ask? One of the biggest questions I would asked is tell me about your experiences and what experiences qualifies you to be President? I believe Obama would fall way short. I will not vote for Obama, he simply is not ready. We are in a full scale war, potentially in a full scale recession and things as a whole need great care to get back on track. We need someone that is ready to go from day one. Clinton or McCain are miles above Obama in terms of being ready for the Presidency. It will be a sad day in our nations history if we put a non qualaified inexperienced person into the Oval Office. We just spent 8 years of the republican version of Obama and our country has been set back generations because of it. I am a dedicated Democrat but I will not vote for Obama. If it is a choice between McCain and Obama I will probably vote for McCain.

I think you are failing to realize that his proposals may actually have a chance considering the "momentum" and will of the people. Leaders with the people behind them are effective leaders. It's not just if policies are implemented, but how.

  • Posted By: lovethemso @ 02/20/2008 1:05:02 PM

I could not disagree more. He is the one this country neebs now. After sever horrible years of Bus lies. Hillary and McCain are sad choices to lead us in the 21 century. (OUR time has come) Stop making up faulse stories. neither Hillary or NcCain haave done must over the ears to help our country. i think they like bush, have made things worse. The country seems to agree with me. you have got it all wrong. we are smarter and more informed then you gaive us credit for. You need to read more about the other Have not done much choices....

    • Posted By: Psylvester @ 02/20/2008 1:46:00 PM

After reading your slightly hysterical, sloppily written paragraph (6 spelling errors) I have decided that your generation is not as smart and even more uninformed then I " gaive " them credit for. Your generation is a waste and so is your cult leader, Obama. Empty headed people passionately believing the empty words and promises of their "Messiah". A phoney like Obama is what this country deserves.

What I find amazing is that whenever politicians offer relief the middle class, the poor, the elderly it is just budget busting. But offer a corporate tax break, a tax cut to the well off including myself, freebies to the agri industry and it's all job creation. Like the old saying when God said brains - Americans thought he said rain and went for umbrellas - and Samuelson is a leading seller of this wealthy snake oil.

The premise of this article is spurious , at best. Its critical of Obama, specifically, but isnt it a criticism of polictics, as a whole. The author begins the discussion by marginalizing the candidate on the issue of recial identity. However, Barak's platform is inclusion, not marginalization. He says that we are all Americans, and can work together to improve this nation, making it a better place, and making the world a safe and better place. He is not "the" African-American candidate, because as the author mistakenly identifies him, he is not African-American. He father is Kenyan and his mother is white american. He is an American, representing the melting pot that we all claim this country has become.

So, ask this myopic author, what's wrong with the promulgation of good will and idealism, in a time of misfortune, discombobulation, and peril. There is not one candidate addresses the specificity that this author demands of Obama. Why then, I ask, does Obama have to prove more to this author than the other candidates?

Here we go again another delusionary writer , I just dont know why Newsweek is still paying you. This young man has a plan vision all it takes to run this country.I really dont what you were thinking writing this piece.I will suggest you pay close attention to the results and examine carefully the demographics of people voting for Obama.Young, old, black, white unemployed , employed, homeowner and all.You have exhibited your own brand of "gutter"journalism, and you are a disgrace to such a reputable magazine."Boy " just get out of town or relocate somewhere if you dont like him.

Further, my friends standing beside me said to also tell you that politicians are like a baby's diaper, they should be changed often and for the same reason.
