Castro and Hitler were also for "CHANGE". Oh, there was change all right.

Excellent article..Obama is a soundbite..but McCain is an android. So glad the worthy candidates were not afforded equal media coverage since it is clear the intent is keep Israel's war going in Iraq. In addition Obama has changed course on 20 different issues already depending on what he can 'swipe' from either Hillary or John Edwards. In preparation of an Obama presidency..it would probably be wise to learn to speak Chinese..

For me I'm personally sick of having a Bush or a Clinton in the White House for the last 20 years (longer if you count when 1st Pres Bush was VP) and I can't stand the thought of it going on any longer. Maybe Obama is a lot of talk but his "talk" or "rhetoric" has inspired me to get off my rear and take part in this process and call our law makers to task. They are not our "Leaders" they are our "Representatives" and it's time they start representing us people. Maybe my veiw on all things isn't the majority but by God the people who REPRESENT me or going to hear from me from now on, and if they're not doing the job I want they'll hear about that too. - The sqeaky wheel gets the oil. Whether you're for Obama, Clinton, McCain or even Ron Paul let them know what you want and demand they get some work done.

can anyone tell me what he has accomlpished? please make a list and post it. aside from leading the sheep to slaughter that is. voting for this guy in the hope for change, for lack of a better word is just palin stupid. if you think what BUSH has done is bad wait untill OBAMA is done with this country. no experience=nothing getting done. listen to how they are pitching it now, " CHANGE TAKES TIME". Sounds a lot like another Bush to me. Oh and by the way if you're not proud of your counrty then what exactly are your motives.

simply google obama and you will find you answer to his accomplishments. However, what he hasn't accomplished is the old politics that we have same for almost ever. The last eight years have been so horrible that I would take anything vs the same faces that has been in Washington accomplishing nothing.

Frankly after I read the author's opinion, I looked at his photo again and it dawned on me he must be at least one century behind reality. Those huge glasses and mustache do not belong to the year 2008, but to the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and that is perhaps quite telling. This guy desperately needs an extreme make-over phycsically and psychologically. America has moved on for good, but some people are resisting to move on. I have news for them ... don't fight the tide! I am one of those you would ordinarily describe as right winger and even I know that the time has come for a change. And that time is NOW

You just said the magic words, Hillary Clinton and McCain have been in the arena for too long, that is exactly what's wrong with our government now, Senators and Congressman holding positions for years and years living in the lap of luxuary while the rest of us hard working American people foot the bill and year after year it's the same old game. That's why Obama have so much appeal, he is not the status quo. Examine if you will Hillary's so called experience, what she tried to push her health plan when they came to the White House the first, and they ran her off the hill so fast it left us spinning, so the so called experience is of her hosting parties at the White House and standing beside Bill. She has not been a Senator all that long. I want change maybe you like the status quo, you probably one of the one's who make over 150,000 plus per year.

McCain is a "known quantity," all right. It's known that he's a scary old man who only wants to be president so he can continue his "Hundred Years War" in Iraq and start a new one with Iran. It's known that McCain has no interest in economic policy and couldn't care less about what his wars will do the US economy. But since Samuelson knows all this, he'll probably be advising his readers to invest in stock of corporations involved in war profiteering. That's where the smart money will be during a McCain presidency.

You seem to dismiss the fact that many of us do not know what we want. Would you want to face another 4 years of infighing that was witnessed in the last Clinton Administration. I think not. As far as being tried by fire, everyone forgets that Hillary has only had 7 years of political experience while Obama has had 11 years. I think it is worth a try to bring this country out of the Dark ages of Partisan Politics and bring us back to unity. We need improvement, we need unity and we need the nay sayers to be quiet.

I have to agree with this article, words are just that words, and Obama is only telling us words that can vaporize in the air as soon as he enter the white house and is in office... of course all candidates aren't perfect, but at least we know what to expect, and Obama has more things to do to prove himself he might be a good orator but change is so vague..... we need to know him better before we decide if he's the best candidate suited for the Presidency..... I've worked with Vicenc Navarro the person that was advising and helping Hillary Clinton to put to work the universal health care plan when she was first lady and beliveme I know for sure that at least in this subject she will work it again verry hard to make it real for the people.... and also lets not forget about the good economy we use to have with the Clintons...... so I really value more experience than just words and probably empty promises of change........

I would have to wrestle greatly with myself before casting my vote for Mr. Obama...but after reading your article "The O Desolution" I must say that :
1-There will be people just like you every time someone like Mr Obama shows up in the horizon. It never fails. I am sure it happened with JFK, MLK Jr. Abe Lincoln and the list goes on...No I am not putting him next to these great leaders yet. He pails in comparison for the present time. And that correspond to history determination...
2- We are all subject to politicians desolutions. Campaining has become exactly that. The one who can raise the most funds, pay for neg TV ads, use the correct "words", attack and ridicule the opponet, mass manipulation, etc,etc,etc...all with ONE goal: get the power...then it becomes a new game. Whatever eloquent or not so eloquent speeches and promises were said during the campaing remain just that: speeches and promises. The result= bi desolution...

Don't you just love how critics complain about Obama being all talk and having no real plan for change and then turn around and criticize his plans? Which one is it? Is he an empty suit filled with rhetoric or is he a dazzling orator full of lofty plans that you don't happen to agree with?

I live in Illinois and voted for Obama when he ran for Senator. I am so dissappointed that he decided to run for President and not even finish his term as Senator here in Illinois. I feel used and I betrayed. He did little, if anything, for Illinois. I'm not sure what people think he's going to do for the country when he can't even finish what he's started here in our state. Everything that is coming out of his mouth I've heard before and let me say that I don't believe a word of it. WAKE AMERICA. I hope the media finally wakes up from this trance and shows America this guy is nothing but talk.

    • Posted By: togunsile @ 02/20/2008 1:40:45 PM

well i am sorry that the Senator didnt finish his term in IL. Maybe its not only IL that needs him at this point in our history, maybe its not just your district that needs him, maybe he hasnt been able to do much because he hasnt been in washington long enough, maybe washington needs a remake to make things in IL better for the next 4 yrs, Maybe thats why hes just running for the President of the United States...because being an IL Senator wont get things done over the lobbyists. Think about that.

Comment: Once upon a time there was a young member of Congress from Illinois who decided to run for President. He was roundly pilloried for lack of experience (he was still in his first term), and dismissed for having more in the way of high-flying, inspring rhetoric that hard, verifiable plans of action. his opponent was experienced, well-known and in the early days of the campaign generally thought to be a shoo-in.

This man's name was Abraham Lincoln, and I think we know the rest of the story ...

    • Posted By: ssbn777 @ 02/20/2008 1:40:23 PM

Yeah, he pushed for a war that killed hundreds of thousands, to secure imperial-style American central domination of a population whose majority concern was unfair representation. Then, he fooled the public into thinking that his war of expansion was about ending slavery (and if you read his "Emancipation Proclamation" which every schoolchild is forced to memorize, you'd see that he called for the freeing of the slaves in Confederate states only, not in Union slaveholding states ??? the purpose of that speech was to start a slave insurrection in the Confederacy, not to free the slaves or right that wrong). His legacy is the popular misconception that the Civil War was fought to end slavery, which simply isn???t true. It was about power and domination, and brought about the end of states??? rights and the beginning of the all-powerful central government in the form it is in today.

My patience for this kind of journalism is wearing thin. Very, very thin. The whole "rhetoric" verse "reality" debate is weak at best. He delivers speeches based on a core set of beliefs regarding how the world is and how it can be. His beliefs have been consistent and his presentation of reality accurate. You're simplifying the situation and you're smart enough to know it. You're trying to argue that to speak about morality you can never kill a fly. Or an environmentalist can never drive a car. You're presenting a slippery slope of presumptions that does not even attempt to address the complexity of our political and media system.

We finally have the opportunity to elect a decent president and you're trying to crush it because he'll never be decent enough.

Samuelson will take a lot of flack for this article, but I want to thank him for it. It is time the record, stances and actions of EACH candidate be compared to the rhetoric.

I like Obama - and I can honestly tell you that I don't care what color his skin his, I care about selecting the most qualified, honest person to lead our country out of the quagmire we are in.

We are all desperate for a viable candidate that we can put our faith in. But even in our desperation as a nation for change, we have to objectively look at what the candidate is saying vs. what they have done and what they are promising.

There is a pervasive feeling that Obama's rhetoric, as wonderful as it is, is excusing scrutiny that is desperately needed. We need honest debate and analysis, not just among the candidates but amongst ourselves. WE are the people, and WE have to get this election right and putting blind faith in campaign talking points could prove disastrous.

Ford, Reagan,Bush Sr.,Clinton, and back to Bush Jr. all presidents, any one with a brain can disrespect and be correct BUT!!! During all these morons tours in the WH, what has not changed? McCain and Mrs. Clinton in the senate and for a very short time Obama, who was the only of a few who knew where our invasion was headed and said so! Did Clinton, no McCain, no! Did anyone scream bloddy hell when Bush took 1 TRILLION from the VA budget? Clinton,no McCain, no Obama, yes! Presidents come and go but what never changed in this countries darkest days, is the senate! Those who have been there for life have no right to run as president, as they have done enough damage from within. So this leaves the rookie in DC, who has great ideas, and gladly and in earnst wants to work with both sides, and listens to those who know more than he, a personel trait, which in todays DC is a needed factor! We have not been herd for many many years, now we are, and this author wants us in the same boat we jumped from. Keeps him in buisn and rolling in bucks, or as easy to say, he is a moron, like the rest! Vote for the furture and our own country! Don't get caught up in running sombody eleses country, Iraq,Pakistan,Afganistan, Sudan, Iran, ect, ect, on our buck or blood! It's time to run the United States of America, by Americans, for Americans! Lead by example, like the Great Days of the USA, not by threat, like the country the world hates to even here about today! Obama is the new age of politics, he is not past retirement age, as McCain and others are! Those who are, should be forced to retire as we are, with no goodies after service! They can afford there own healthcare, and i don't feel like paying for it either, as i can't afford my own healthcare! Give them VA Medical! Then they can see where the TRILLION took, should have went! Obamas a natural leader! Clinton crashed, when she either did not vote, or voted for the arms sale, to the true enemy of the USA, Saudi, to the tune of 900+ smart bombs, and weapons we invaded Iraq to retake, ya WMDs! Clinton sits on the Senate arms committy, who sells American weapons, to anyone whos check will clear! Time to turn the page in our history, and become a country to be proud of, not feared, by it's own poeple!

Why would you prefer a 'known quantity' that is known to not be up to the task over an unknown quantity that has so far met every measure and might just be extraordinary? Obama's positions don't enforce the status quo so much as they reverse direction for a country that has veered far off course with G. W. Bush at the helm. We need to start with our ideals- if we can come together as a nation and agree on what we want, there will be no stopping us in achieving our goals. Let's not jump straight into thinking that great changes are impossible.

When you vote for McCain you vote for the same. He backs a 100 year war in Iraq, and hides behind 911 to instill fear in every American. When is anyone going ask McCain how he is going to deal with the current economic crisis in America? Actually he already answered how he would deal with the current mortgage and foreclosure crisis. He answered in the past by dealing with Keating and The Lincoln Savings scandal and thousands of Americans being bilked out of their Savings.
McCain is just another puppet on the "Bush Regime", with the same views of status quo.
I am proud to be an American and I'm proud of this country, which is why I say its time to make a change. When we are spending billions of dollars in Iraq, People are losing their homes by the thousands and healthcare is out of reach for thousands. How can anyone vote for the same old thing?
