You just said the magic words, Hillary Clinton and McCain have been in the arena for too long, that is exactly what's wrong with our government now, Senators and Congressman holding positions for years and years living in the lap of luxuary while the rest of us hard working American people foot the bill and year after year it's the same old game. That's why Obama have so much appeal, he is not the status quo. Examine if you will Hillary's so called experience, what she tried to push her health plan when they came to the White House the first, and they ran her off the hill so fast it left us spinning, so the so called experience is of her hosting parties at the White House and standing beside Bill. She has not been a Senator all that long. I want change maybe you like the status quo, you probably one of the one's who make over 150,000 plus per year.

As usual the "experts" just don't get it. The current administration has stripped the life out of this country. War, deficits, lying, recession, torture Americans are sick of it. I am looking for someone to believe in. Someone who will put the constitution first and propose an agenda that will benefit the American people and now and in the future. I am not deluded by Obama;s rhetoric. I realize that he won't be able to accomplish everything on his agenda, but he has the right message and through his eloquence he will inspire people to act on his agenda. It's time to bring back the America of our forefathers and let the creators of our current situation know that there time has past. Now get out of the way!

Despite Obama's shortfalls (and all the candidates have plenty), I think that his vision and energy would serve this Country well...we need a break from the "seasoned politicians" who have mucked things up so badly.

Just because there is a new vision does not mean the problems will go away. We need to fix those first or we will have a new vision with old and new problems. Because with new visions come new problems that will need to be addressed.

gmancometh - I live in Illinois too and you have obviously been hybernating for the pass eleven years if you don't know Sen. Obama's legislative record and all the positives that he has done for Illinois. No need to come out of hybernation now - go back to sleep. If you have a specific issue with the Senator fine, but to just say something so empty as "all talk and no action" is really very uninformative.

Word of caution...the fine State of MN elected Jessie Ventura govenor after wanting change, tired of the same old politics and broken promises. They thought they were sending a message. That did not turn out so well for them...and yet the have backed Obama. Must be all the cold weather.

  • Posted By: robnyc @ 02/20/2008 1:14:43 PM

Increasingly, the attacks against Obama are ad hominem: immature, inauthentic, unaccomplished. And on what grounds? Rhetoric is and has always been the principle tool of political leaders and social movement leaders to compel the masses. This is because candidates largely don't know the details of executing on their visions...and to the extent they know details, they certainly cannot share them to the listening public in an hour, or 2 hours, or a day or more.

There are major holes in every candidate's proposals...and the electorate is not in a position to have PWC, KPMG, Deloitte & Touche, E&Y (independent audit firms) standing next to the candidates on the stump auditing their speech proposals.

The problem with HRC is that she wants to fight against half the country for an agenda. This is not sustainable change, and is rooted in old-style political warfare. Obama can advocate a vision for the country, and if advocated effectively enough, people may change their hearts and minds broadly, and then changes will be broad and deep and sustainable. If people in red and blue states, of many different religious persuasions, believe that truly affordable health care for all Americans is important to individual dignity and should be a right, not just a priveledge, you'll get a broad coalition of people across the country supporting the legislation and associated costs. If you just fight and act and force universal healthcare and the costs on people...you'll have half the country pissed and ready to elect the other party's candidate in the next election...because you never used rhetoric to persuade them.

Obama's appeal is who he is, and what he advocates (through his rhetoric), and that is nothing unusual or terrifying. Reagan, an effective leader (even if you disagree with his policies) was high-level and rhetorical, but nonetheless effective.

You are incorrect in stating that a candidate CANNOT state the 'how' in their ideas, they just choose not to in order to avoid accountability. Before a candidate ever starts to campeign, they decide on their platform. Every speech from then on is just a re-hash of that platform. Obama CHOOSES not to release the 'how' because he knows it would cost him votes. And because people are gullable enough to vote their emotions (Clinton, Carter, etc.)

We need a lot of leadership in this country, Barack Obama is the leader we need .
Barack Obama, with the help of thousands of people across the US, is operating at such a high level that all anyone can do is marginalize the force of nature that he leads. Barack is a true leader. We need a leader that is intelligent enough to know and to have the studied the tough problems we face as Americans that need immediate attention, but also smart enough to realize that he needs us in addressing these issues(healthcare, economy, foreign policy, energy independence, jobs, trade, education, etc...) We need a leader that can inspire us as well as bring us together as a nation so we can move beyond the divisions the cynics say we must maintain and can never be mended. As barack says, " we are not as divided as the cynics say we are." "Yes we can" to a better America

Talking about rhetoric?! Your entire piece is nothing more than huff and hype. Its hard to believe that even you could believe that what you wrote was objective. It was nothing more than spin. You are clearly a closet hillary supporter. That's okay, I was a Hillary supporter too, that is until people like you began your attemps to usurp the process a' la the jedi mind trick: "change is bad; Obama is bad; etc. Going forward, it would serve you well to announce your affiliations so as to avoid looking deceptive as you do now.

Hillary - Most Experienced! Voted for the War
Obama - Least Experienced! Voted AGAINST the War
Hmmm... Let's see. I guess that means good sense is BETTER than experience!

So Newsweek is for Hillary. What has she accomplished other that being Bill's wife. She can't control Bill let alone run this country. Hillary, throw the towel in. Obama has a chance to win this election. Hillary has too much baggage. Maybe Samuelson has a relative that needs pardoning or wants to sleep over at the White House.

  • Posted By: NReyes @ 02/20/2008 1:24:28 PM

Unfortunately, Mr. Samuelson fundamentally misunderstands the concept of Barack Obama's change. It should come as no surprise to anyone that a Democratic Senator from Illinois would be advancing liberal or moderate solutions to national problems. To claim that Obama's change mantra is false simply because he espouses Democratic ideals is about as sensible an attack as attacking Reagan for espousing conservative ideals.

No, change is meant to reflect the tone in Washington, not just the content of policies. Obama and Clinton may have largely similar agendas, but who is most likely to reach out and actually achieve any of their goals? Clinton, an object of derision by the Republicans for over a decade, or Obama, an individual who is able to engender massive cross over appeal?

In short it's unfair by Mr. Samuelson to attack Obama's "change" by stating that he should be supporting goals in opposition to Democratic ideals. Again, change is about tone and actually accomplishing objectives.

  • Posted By: 1Rebel @ 02/20/2008 12:18:53 PM

With all of Hillary's experience, she voted FOR the war. With all of Obama's so called lack of experience, he voted AGAINST the war. So much for the "experience" theory!!!

He did not vote because he was not there. Are you one of those highly educated people who support Obama? Obviously you do not know how to use that education.

  • Posted By: Dalawild1 @ 02/20/2008 1:23:47 PM

You MUST be kidding right? Hillary could not even control her own husband in the White House and now you expect us to vote for her to run the country! And, McCain looks and acts half dead. The rest of the WORLD is tired of us electing these same old "cookie cutter" presidents and apparently the citizens of this country are too !

  • Posted By: Christina112211 @ 02/20/2008 1:23:47 PM

Obama's luck and charm may change after Tuesday February 26. Larry Sinclair will take his polygraph to add to the evidence that he has against his sexual and drug allegations involving Barack Obama.

Mark it on your calanders...things may turn quickly

  • Posted By: ROZEE @ 02/20/2008 1:22:43 PM

WHAT IS EVERYONE THINKING? I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH OBAMA, BUT NOT NOW. THIS COUNTRY IS IN SO MUCH TROUBLE, WHY WOULD WE SEND A ROOKIE IN NOW.? THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO VOTE ON PERSONALITY......WAKE UP PEOPLE, WE CAN'T ELECT ANOTHER PRESIDENT WHO HAS TO DEPEND ON PEOPLE TO WALK HIM THROUGH THE ROUGH TIMES. REMEMBER CHANEY, RUMSFIELD ETC. TRY TO VISUALIZE THE BIG PICTURE, HILLARY AND OBAMA TICKET, EIGHT YEARS IN OFFICE AND OBAMA FOR THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS...........WE NEED THIS BADLY. THINK ABOUT IT.

I must agree with with the others, it sounds like you are on HRC payroll..
Although I have doubts about both of them i am very concerned about Bill's foriegn affairs. HRC seems to be very bold and hard working as long as there is a checck in the long run. I admire her will - however we the people are speaking and i believe BO deserves a chance. WE DID choose to reelect Bush, We have Terminator cutting our kids educational budgets.. who are we fooling - we need someone who cares about US.. Not all of kids get the chance to go to private schools, how will they compete with the rest of the world.. HRC is a good person, but it seems to be going too far. I hope she doesnt get too dirty and leave with some class.

    • Posted By: RIVASLEDESMA @ 02/20/2008 1:22:11 PM

hrc has class, more then people want to admitt, stop being so sexist, bill was president and his wife Sen Hillary Clinton is the one running for president. What makes you think that she cannot do her job without her husband , woman are capable believe it or not to have a career , raise children , and do a damn good job, but people like you will not give a WOMAN the chance .

Comment: Mr. Samuelson, to disagree with Obama's policies is one thing. (Surely even Obama wouldn't expect total agreement from the population.) But to call him a "mirage" is to call the millions of Americans who have voted for him idiots. We are not idiots, Mr. Samuelson.

Your argument against Obama is an argument against political campaigning. A campaign does not accurately reflect an individual's ability to be president. Surely by now most people realize that campaign policies do not become law as soon as the president is sworn in. What Obama represents, more than McCain or Clinton, is a willingness to listen and compromise. Not to K-Street, not only to the elite, but to the American people. What his campaign has done is prove that he is capable of energizing our stagnant population --- the first step in getting us involved in the greater good of our country.

Please keep your personal feelings in check and help us understand the real issue.

    Posted By: fa4hire44 @ 02/20/2008 12:40:04
Comment: You won't understand the real issue, because in reality, Obama's campaign does not have any substance. Mr. Samuelson's words certainly are not based on personal feelings, however calling yourself an idiot, or implicating the impression of an idiot, is personal.

    Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 11:52:13
Comment: People in Germany didn't think they were idiots either. Their country was in dire straights, they wanted hope, they wanted change and Hitler promised it to them. He didn't have plans of "how" he just kept telling them things would be different. And, on that, he didn't lie. Things were VERY different.

  • Posted By: Adam-NYC @ 02/20/2008 1:21:31 PM

This type of argument makes sense if you are looking at the race in a vacuum. However, in reality, Hillary will divide the country like a hot knife through butter if she wins the general or not. McCain will keep us in a war we cannot afford and continue the politics of fear Bush model. It is not just talk. The way Obama would handle himself as the president of this country MATTERS.
