I agree totally Mr. Samuelson. The Clintons have been accused of just about everything, mostly by Republicans and much of it turned out not to be true. Some of you must have lived on another planet when Bill Clinton was President--we had a surplus--there were jobs--he cared about the environment. He lied about something personal--he didn't lie about a war. Give it up!! Hillary can hold her own, her husband just happens to be a former President. We really know nothing about Barack Obama --only that he is a great speaker or preacher. I like experience. For someone to come into the Presidency ,now, with all the problems that are facing us (thanks to all the voters who voted Cowboy Bush in, not once but twice) who only has 3 years experience in Washington, I do not believe is a great idea. Bottom line is Hillary is a woman--and this male-dominated America just can't get past that. Hillary is the better choice and I know she will work hard for the people of the United States. I am from NY--Hillary was very instrumental in saving about 800 jobs in our small rural area--it would have been devastating to lose that many jobs where I live. Hillary NOW!!

Word of caution....talk to the fine folks of Minnesota about voting for what you believe to be "change" and a fresh perspective. Ask them what kind of a govenor Jessie Venture turned out to be. I didnt' think they would make the same mistake twice, but here they went and voted for Obama. Must be all the cold weather.

I really do enjoy the idea of change that Obama promises. I feel that he deeply wants change in this country and is willing to work hard for it. My hesistaion in voting for him however is that I see no point by point outlines of how he will make this change happen. There are many things I would love to change in this country as well, but I am certainly not qualified to do so. He is a wonderful speaker as he is able to reach out and grab your attention within seconds of taking the stage, but his speeches always seem the same; a prewritten and practiced rhetoric. We enjoy listening to him because he speaks as many of our great people in history have. He speaks as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, JFK or Bill Clinton but his actual message seems to be much less substantial. When it's all said and done, I believe Hillary to be the most qualified and able to run this country. Her speeches are not as wonderful and exciting as Mr. Obamas, but they are something his simply are not...they are real. Should Obama win against her, I have no choice but to vote for McCain.

you are so right, McCain , I hate to say will be my choice as well , and I have never voted republican , but I wuold rather se a seasoned senator in office then Obama

Increasingly, the attacks against Obama are ad hominem: immature, inauthentic, unaccomplished. And on what grounds? Rhetoric is and has always been the principle tool of political leaders and social movement leaders to compel the masses. This is because candidates largely don't know the details of executing on their visions...and to the extent they know details, they certainly cannot share them to the listening public in an hour, or 2 hours, or a day or more.

There are major holes in every candidate's proposals...and the electorate is not in a position to have PWC, KPMG, Deloitte & Touche, E&Y (independent audit firms) standing next to the candidates on the stump auditing their speech proposals.

The problem with HRC is that she wants to fight against half the country for an agenda. This is not sustainable change, and is rooted in old-style political warfare. Obama can advocate a vision for the country, and if advocated effectively enough, people may change their hearts and minds broadly, and then changes will be broad and deep and sustainable. If people in red and blue states, of many different religious persuasions, believe that truly affordable health care for all Americans is important to individual dignity and should be a right, not just a priveledge, you'll get a broad coalition of people across the country supporting the legislation and associated costs. If you just fight and act and force universal healthcare and the costs on people...you'll have half the country pissed and ready to elect the other party's candidate in the next election...because you never used rhetoric to persuade them.

Obama's appeal is who he is, and what he advocates (through his rhetoric), and that is nothing unusual or terrifying. Reagan, an effective leader (even if you disagree with his policies) was high-level and rhetorical, but nonetheless effective.

Yea we have seen what the so called experienced can do over the past 8 years. I think we should just shut our mouths sit back and see if this kid can deliver. Their will be plenty of time for bashing later if he doesn???t.

What we've seen is a true example of how the American people can be tricked (or cheated, i.e. Fla '00 & OH '04) into making a truly questionable decision. If the dem's continue down this path, I predict two possibilities, 1) the GOP will win in Nov or 2) we will get a democratic president that is not up to the task. We've just suffered through 8 years of bad decisions, let's not follow up with another one.

I think the the delusion is actually the other way around. You are saying precisely what Barack Obama has expected you to say through your conventional thinking. And he was being polite.
I remember this exact thing happening in the media both TV and Written when the Civil Rights Movement was is full swing in the 60's. To the very end there were journalist and TV personalities say don't beleive it!

It's about time someone has addressed the fact the "smoke and mirrors" surrounding Obama are finally clearing. He's an awesome speaker, but that's not what it takes to run a country. He has yet to prove himself as a senator for my state of Illinois. Maybe he should try again next time around, when he has proven himself as a leader.

Talking about rhetoric?! Your entire piece is nothing more than huff and hype. Its hard to believe that even you could believe that what you wrote was objective. It was nothing more than spin. You are clearly a closet hillary supporter. That's okay, I was a Hillary supporter too, that is until people like you began your attemps to usurp the process a' la the jedi mind trick: "change is bad; Obama is bad; etc. Going forward, it would serve you well to announce your affiliations so as to avoid looking deceptive as you do now.

Hope is not a strategy. McCain is the anti-Bush.... fought for budget restraint, fought for health care cost reduction, fought for integrating the nation's hard working immigrants that are following their dreams, and most importantly fought to fire Rumsfeld so we could actually win in Iraq rather than run away. I know Obama's followers want change, but they will scarcely get it from him; change will come from McCain.

I think obama is the right choice foe our country now. The author speaks od McCain and Hillary as if they have done so much to help our country. There records speak differenly. Neither one of them have done anything but make ou nation worse. i put them both on the Bush list. Look what he has done in seven years. They both are mre talk then action aas their records prove. Neither one of then has done much to improve our nation. It seems to me the people are smart and know what we neeb now. The time is now for a new beginning

The Clinton machine is in desperation mode and are pulling all their favors with their sychophants in the media to produce negative press on Obama. Robert Samuelson has exposed himself as a Clinton sychophant with this ridiculous column.

iteach... one thing to note is that the people who have voted for Obama are largely better educated and wealthier than those that voted for Hillary. What does this tell you?

    • Posted By: RIVASLEDESMA @ 02/20/2008 1:12:08 PM

It tells me that you are neither educated nor wealthy , which is why you porbebly voted for Obama.

  • Posted By: jtatom1942 @ 02/20/2008 1:12:01 PM

I say that if we vote Obama in we will deserve what he will give us. He said he could put 210 billion over ten years into the economy and it would not cost us a cent, he would take it out of what we are spending in Iraq and other places in the mid-east.....Where is the money coming from that is going into Iraq????It is costing the tax payer. He cannot spend what is not there without taxing the American public...

Simon, I mean Mr. Samulson, Finalyy someone who see's what Obama is all about. I like Hope and Change but not from someone who has not one ounce of proof that he is capable of accomplishing that. The reason HRC health plan failed is because the drug Compainies fought against it with massive amounts of money, if you can't understand why, you should not vote.
She has had many accomplishments in her lifetime, look into her life, don't blame her for Bill's failures, like NAFTA, she was never totally sold on the idea. She has been a huge part of helping blacks to be educated in Universities during the 60's, migrant farm workers benefits, civil rights for all, she is an inspiration to so many. It is sad that so many more don't know all of her accomplishements and they only remember Bill's failures. Remember the Clinton's are not running Hillary Rodham Clinton is. She is her own person, she always has been and always will be.
